Kaiden Lachlan and Alexander Brennan (along with the Smith Clan)

Alex laughed and nodded. “She’d love to meet you.” He replied before looking at Ezekiel. He turned up the intensity of the puppy dog eyes. “At least let him check..” He said, his voice soft. Kaiden looked at him and saw him looking back, with that raised brow of question. He simply nodded with a smirk on his face. He would do it. Alex waited to see if Ezekiel would give in and allow Theo to treat him.

He probably just should have done it, but Ezekiel was feeling stubborn. Or at least he was earlier, and now he had this reputation of his own making that he had to keep up. He almost laughed at the more intense puppy dog eyes, because Alex was so cute. He determined it would be easier to let it happen, and then he looked at Kaiden who nodded. Smirked. He really would do it, wouldn’t he? His hands trapped Ezekiel’s arm and torso somehow. Bound to him. Close. The idea made him… uneasy. He wasn’t sure that he liked the thought of being held back by him. His breath on the back of Ezekiel’s neck if he held him from behind. Legs capturing legs if from the front. “Fine.” He still stared at Kaiden until he couldn’t anymore. The uneasy feeling gripped at his insides, and he attributed this to his dislike of the man. Of course he wouldn’t want him holding him down. They weren’t exactly friendly. There was no telling what he would do. How he could use it against him. So he looked at Alex and nodded. “He can-“ Theo was already there, wiping away the blood. “Do… whatever.” Theo laughed. “I knew Alex would work on you.”

Kaiden didn’t exactly find the thought of holding him down great, but it was less of the idea of them being close and more the idea of him holding him down. It was weird and uncomfortable thought. And at the same time it pricked somewhere deep down that he didn’t want pricked. He held Ezekiel’s gaze until he looked away and Alex grinned happily. He was glad that Ezekiel had agreed to let Theo treat him. Both Alex and Kaiden watched as Theo started wiping the blood away.

Ezekiel did not look towards Kaiden as Theo cleaned him away. It made him uncomfortable. Everything about this made him uncomfortable, though he wondered if he would be so guarded if it were just the other two with him. Theo tossed his now bloodied rag and clicked his tongue. “You, sir, are either a liar or terrible at telling what’s wrong with yourself. This is nasty.” He really must have done more than jab it like he thought. Did he get caught as he was moving? Possibly. He couldn’t remember that well anymore. “Be still for me,” Theo demanded as he pulled out the sewing kit. “You need like two of these. And you were going to let it hang out there?” He looked at Alex. “Your bro here should not be allowed to care for himself.”

Alex saw the bloodied rag and heard Theo’s words. He didn’t like hearing that at all, and he looked away. Kaiden was both surprised and a little upset for some odd reason. Not even he’d let something that bad sit like that. Alex turned his head and ducked it into Kaiden’s side, not wanting to watch. He didn’t mind watching his sister see up others but this was his brother and he didn’t want to watch it. Would it be the last time someone he was close to and cared for get hurt and sewed up? Not a chance but he was still learning that. Kaiden wrapped an arm around Alex gently so he didn’t have to look, though he couldn’t look away and that made him upset because he shouldn’t be so invested in watching this.

“I…” Ezekiel didn’t know how to answer Theo’s words. He did not know how to explain himself. As he watched Alex turn away, a pang of guilt razed his insides. Everything churned. Theo put in the first stitch, and he did not even react, because he was focused on how Alex turned away from Ezekiel and to Kaiden. Kaiden who was watching. Kaiden who put an arm around Alex like he could keep him safe. There was a large part of him that wanted to tell him to let go of his brother. Don’t touch him and do whatever awful thing he was inevitably going to do. Another part of him was almost thankful. Someone needed to care for Alex when he could not. “I didn’t know it was that bad.” His words were quieter. Weaker as the truth settled between them. That was true. He didn’t know. He also didn’t check. He was too trying to be the bigger man than Kaiden. Trying to save Alex. He locked eyes with Kai for just a moment. Just one. Then he looked away. “Yeah, well, you were wrong, and we were right.” Theo put the second stitch in. “Maybe you should listen to your friends?” Ezekiel bit his lip. Maybe.

Kaiden wasn't expecting to be holding Alex, but he also understood that he was only sixteen. This was all relatively new to him, and Ezekiel was clearly someone he considered a brother. He locked eyes with Ezekiel for a moment before he saw him turn away. This wasn't something Kaiden ever expected to happen, but he just kept Alex close, hearing Theo talk to Ezekiel about listening to his friends, friends? Were they friends? Kai didn't know exactly, but they certainly weren't hardened enemies either. Even though Ezekiel drove him crazy so far.

When he finished, Theo shoved Ezekiel towards the other two. “And we’re done here. Don’t tear your arm open again, ‘kay? It’s bringing down the vibe.” Ezekiel did not even look at it. He was worried about Alex. This was a lot for him to deal with when he was so young and so new to all of this. He leaned closer to him, closer to Kaiden, and gently touched his leg. “Alex. It’s better now. I’m sorry we didn’t look at it earlier.” He bit the inside of his cheek. “I was worried about you. But it’s okay now. We’re both okay. Right?” Without meaning to, his eyes slid to the man who held him. They were closer than he expected. His brows furrowed, and he leaned back. Away.

Kaiden chuckled softly, hearing Theo's words. That sounded exactly like something his brother would say. He also noticed that Ezekiel leaned closer to Alex, and him. Kai shifted as Alex did, moving his head out from where he'd tucked it against Kaiden's side and turned. Kaiden noticed how close they'd gotten and he also noticed Ezekiel lean back and away. Huh. Alex moved away from Kaiden's side and sat back up. "We're both okay." Alex agreed with a nod of his head. He placed a hand on Ezekiel's leg and smiled at him.

Ezekiel moved his hand so that it was over Alex’s and he squeezed gently. He smiled. It was that softer, gentler smile that he had when they were on the island. When their lives were simple and easy. It was the smile of thinking only about Alex and not anything else. Theo, though touched by this adorable moment of brotherly love, fell back again so that he was staring at the sad looking ceiling of this building that really did look like it could fall apart at any moment. He knew that it would not. These buildings never did. They were kind of amazing like that. He wiggled a moment before settling into a place he could probably be in for the next several minutes without needing to get up and move.

Alex smiled at the gentle squeeze from his brother's hand as he nodded. Kaiden's eyes flicked over at them and saw that smile on Ezekiel's face and for a moment... just a moment, his world stopped. That place deep down inside that didn't want to be pricked got pricked again, harder. He had to almost force himself to look away and he did, finally. Kaiden laid down on his back beside Theo, looking at the ceiling. "These buildings are pretty neat." He commented, rolling his head to look at his brother. Alex looked at them, and if it didn't hurt to lay on his back, he'd probably try and copy them. But right it just felt nice to not move and allow himself a chance to rest and recover. "Ezekiel? What if.. what if I'm not able to get back home?"

Lost in his own thoughts about the past several days, Alex’s voice brought Ezekiel back to the present. He still smiled at him as he spoke. “We’re going to make it back. Don’t worry about that. I will carry you back home if I have to.” He grinned and side glanced his arms. “Why else do you think that I swing this hammer the way I do?” He chuckled quietly. Theo, on the floor, whispered, “Yeah. I like it out here way more than in the stadium. Even if it’s super dangerous, and we don’t have any backup.” He flicked his eyes to the others. “Or maybe we do?” This was going so nicely. No arguments or anything in so long! “We’ve got master a master archer who could probably shoot anything from miles away,” it did not matter that Theo actually had no idea how good Alex was or was not at the bow, “and one of those big dudes with the giant hammer. I don’t know which would be scarier if they weren’t on our side.”

Alex looked at Ezekiel, hearing him and nodded, a smile on his face as he laughed softly. "But what about your injury? You can't carry me back with that arm." Alex said, his tone of voice betraying his worry. He didn't want Ezekiel to strain himself any more than he had too. Kaiden heard Theo's whisper and saw him flick his eyes to look at the other two. He looked at Alex for a moment, then a longer look at Ezekiel. Hm. "I'm not sure how long we'll have the backup. They'll probably leave once Alex is healed up, and we need to find another place to spend the night."

Theo shrugged sort of. “Good point. I think I saw a couple of buildings not too far from here that we could check out. Maybe one of them has a good spot to stop for the night?” Ezekiel frowned just slightly. He was going to be a whole lot less capable with only one arm. Once, years ago, when they were fighting wolves, one of them called him a brute. A brute. Ezekiel did not see himself as a brute. Sometimes, he got angry. Sometimes he could be aggressive. Clearly. But a brute? It seemed a bit much. He did not like being that kind of person. “Well, maybe we will wait here a little longer then? If we are late, we can become an untrustworthy duo.” He gestured to the other two. “We can ask them for tips on how that works.”

Kaiden looked at Theo and thought about it for a moment. "I'm sure one of them will have a place for us." He replied before he sat up again, snagging his pack. "You know something Theo? I never.. I never got the chance to give this to Dad. I just realized that earlier when I was searching. I doubt he'll want it now." He said, reaching in and pulling the books they'd found earlier in the week out. "I really messed up didn't I?" Kaiden's voice was soft. He did not think about the other two with them, his mind was running a different scene, all derived from when he'd seen the book earlier. Alex nodded then chuckled at that. "I don't think we need tips on how it works. We seem to be doing a pretty good job on our own."

Theo was running through the buildings in the area from his memory when they were jumping across rocks. Maybe he could go scout it out and see? His eyes followed Kai as he sat up. He watched a moment and then joined him as he realized what Kai was talking about. He touched one of the books as he readjusted it to see its cover. The most science nerdy things he had ever seen. They were perfect for Kai’s dad. He wrapped an arm around Kai’s shoulder. “Don’t say that. He isn’t the kind of mad that means he is going to hate you and your gifts.” Theo picked one of them up. “How can he say no to this? It’s soooo him.” Ezekiel was drawn to the sudden change in the mood. The atmosphere felt far more choking than it had just a moment before. He watched as this happened, eyes looking at the books. They drifted to hands holding them. Up arms. Across shoulder. A pained face. What quiet words he had. His grip on Alex’s hand loosened as he watched. Pondered. He had questions that he did not ask.

Kaiden noticed Theo sit up and felt the arm wrapped around his shoulder. His eyes drew to look at his brother and swallowed hard. "He seemed pretty mad.." Kai muttered, his hands trembled slightly as he heard him mention that one of the books was so Hayden. He never realized how much he hated this. Sure they'd gotten in trouble plenty of times over the years, but.. he'd never seen his dad mad like this before. Alex felt the grip on his hand loosen and he looked at Ezekiel, only to notice that his dad was looking at Kaiden instead. Alex turned to look, and saw that pained face. Something was wrong but he didn't know what.

“Everyone gets mad,” Theo countered. Yes, Hayden seemed pretty angry. More than pretty. He was so quiet, and that was terrifying. He was so stern. He said things that hurt Kai more than Theo had ever seen happen before. They were joking about how they were going to be locked up forever and could never leave again, but that joke was coming out of real things that were really happening. So Hayden was definitely more than pretty mad. “And when people get mad, they need to cool off. That’s why we are out here. We are cooling off, and so is he. When we go back, he’s going to be so happy to see you. And we’re bribing him with gifts. It’s going to be okay.” Ezekiel stiffened as Theo spoke. He had really started to feel bad for them. Worried maybe? They were clearly upset. Kaiden was clearly upset. That face did something to him that he couldn’t understand, and he did not have time to even think about it before he went rigid. “You’re going back?” He had not expected that. When he heard that these men ran away, he assumed it was because they were leaving the wolves. If they were going back, then they were taking back the knowledge of him and Alex. He had not been part of the planning with Theo and Alex. It never occurred to him that this was supposed to become a real partnership between people who were still part of the WLF. Of course they would go back. Of course they would run back to where they could live their perfect pampered lives. He didn't know why it bothered him so much.

Kai looked at Theo, hearing his words and nodded. Yes, everyone does get mad. That is true. Cooling off, right. They were cooling off, and then before he could reply, he heard Ezekiel's question. His brown eyes turned to look at him, swallowing back the fear and sadness to remain neutral. "Yes. We.. we have to. That's our family. And before you even ask, because I can tell it's on your mind. We won't be telling them about you." He said, his eyes searching the other man. He did not want another fight, he was too emotionally exhausted, but he would if it happened. He was too.. impulsive that way to not. Alex looked at them, then at Ezekiel. He did not know what was going on inside his brother, but he just hoped they didn't fight.. again.

“Have to.” Ezekiel really did not know why it upset him. It did not make any sense for this to be the thing that dug at him off everything that they talked about. He and Alex were going back to the island when Alex felt better. When Kaiden felt better, they were going back to the stadium. It was the same. Their families were back at their respective homes. He clenched his jaw. Leaned back. Away again. Have to. Theo was not sure what was happening, and he was not liking where he was assuming that it was likely to go. “We didn’t tell them the other times, either. You know, he even kept you a secret from me?” Which was true. For a while. There was no point in him being a secret once Theo met him too, “We’re friends now. We wouldn’t do something to deliberately harm each other like that.”

The repeated words. ‘Have to’ echoed around his head. What did that mean? Did Ezekiel think they’d run away completely, never to return to their families? No, they had to return to their families. It was just how it was. Kaiden was a wolf and so was Theo, he’d been a citizen of Seattle, then of FEDRA and then part of the WLF. This was who he was. He watched Ezekiel lean back and huffed out a puff of air. Right. Don’t forget what he is, his people and what he’s done to yours. Alex looked between the two, and set a hand on Ezekiel’s knee. “Remember what you promised.” He whispered, loud enough for his brother to hear.

Secret. How did Ezekiel feel about being a secret? He didn’t know. He was not sure about any of it. Kaiden’s secret. From Theo. From the rest of the family including an overbearing dad and a soldier papa. A medic uncle. A whole family. He knew what it was like to have a family. He had such a large one. His eyes and ears drifted to that puff of air. What was he thinking? Why did Ezekiel want to know so badly? It didn’t matter. They were wolves. What were they going to do? Run back to their pack and rally the troops? This was not their territory. They were not those kinds of animals. He kept his mouth shut as he heard Alex. He could do this for Alex. No fights. Sitting without fights. He closed his eyes, breathed in too deeply. Control that anger you never knew you had. He was not the brute everyone said that he was. Theo watched carefully. And then nothing happened. Did the tension leave? Not quite, but it was not exploding on them. Not right now anyway. He smiled. “And just because we’re going back doesn’t mean we have to stop being friends. That’s what Alex and I were trying to figure out. How can we do this more often without our whole squad trying to kill everyone?”

Kaiden looked at Theo and nodded, hearing his words. “I.. apologize for putting that paper where I did. We truly did just want to get a message to you.” Kaiden’s voice was quiet, and he spoke before he thought. He didn’t apologize usually, mostly because he tried to do things right the first time. Did that always work? No. Clearly. “What have you two discussed as far as meeting places?” Kai asked, looking between Alex and Theo. Alex, who noticed Ezekiel’s deep breath, looked over to Kai. “We started tossing around the idea of the park near the hospital, finding somewhere close to that we could all meet up.” Alex replied.

Apologize? Ezekiel opened his eyes and looked at Kaiden. He did not expect an apology. Wasn’t he too high and fancy to stoop so low as to apologize over something so menial when they had such an important and good agenda? That made Ezekiel’s assumption wrong, unless this was some sort of plan that he did not see. Unexpected. Thankfully, he did not have to say anything to that. He did not know how he could possibly respond. He was feeling so many things that he couldn’t quantify. Theo jumped in with Alex. “I know the park normally has the sc- Seraphites, so maybe somewhere in between that and the hospital? Somewhere that both of our people don’t ever go. Alex said maybe we can scout it out in our coming patrols?” He smiled at the younger friend. “He’s a little genius. I think I want to keep him.” He eyed Ezekiel who said nothing. He was trying to be a good boy and not say what he was thinking.

Kai noticed Ezekiel open his eyes and look at him when he apologized. He felt his cheeks flush in embarrassment and he turned away, focusing on Theo and Alex instead. “That sounds like a good idea. That is.. if we ever get to patrol again.” Kaiden said with a laugh. “I bet you we’ll be grounded for life when we get back.” He added as Alex tilted his head. He’d never been in enough trouble to get grounded so this must’ve been a very serious issue. “So if you do get a chance to patrol, how do we communicate that we’ve found a spot?” Alex asked, thinking about where one could possibly set could leave a note to the other set.
