Carlos Da Silva and Asher McCoy
Aspiring Artist and Former Hunter | 23, 29 | Current location ;; New Mexico

“I love me some beans,” Carlos mused as he sleepily crawled himself over to the rest of them. He plopped himself down beside Kaleb, or rather partially on Kaleb with how little he could tell where he was so far, and happily took the utensil. Wait, it wasn’t eating time yet. His finger hooked under Kaleb’s chin and guided him to line up with him so that he could plant a gentle but meaningful kiss. “Good morning my love.” He moved to Asher next and crooked his finger. Asher raised a brow. Carlos took that as not a hard no and gave him a kiss too. “Good morning my love’s beau.” Then he moved to Jordan and may or may not have had a spicier kiss. “Good morning my fiery phoenix.” He winked and moved back to Kaleb. “Alright, we can eat now.” So he did. Asher rolled his eyes, smiled, and also began eating.

Kaleb smiled at Carlos when he plopped himself all but on him. He smiled into the kiss and chuckled as he watched him kiss Asher. Jordan smiled and kissed Carlos back the same way. “Good morning beautiful.” Jordan replied, also taking the time to start eating as did Kaleb. It was a calm moment, a quiet lull before they parted. Before the sadness of the moment after set in. Jordan ate slowly, as did Kaleb almost as if to savor the time together. Today was the day.

Carlos might not have pushed the Asher kiss if they weren’t parting. Asher may or may not have said yes if they weren’t parting. The mood would not have been so somber. It was hard to think that they were making this decision when it was clear that none of them wanted their time together to end. It had to though, at least for now. They weren’t ready for the compromise. Asher ate quietly. Carlos wanted to say something but was not sure what to say, so he didn’t. He also ate. Until he had a very important question. “Jackson, right? In case we want to make sure you’re doing okay without us there to keep you going.” Asher nodded. “Jackson, Wyoming. Don’t know if that’s where we will stay. It’s the last place we heard Joel was.” He placed a reassuring hand on Jordan’s leg. “We’re going to find him, lovebug. I know it.”

Kaleb flicked his gaze to Asher when Carlos spoke, and he bit his lip. He looked down and away. There was so much.. turmoil inside him. He didn’t want to leave his friends, his family. Because in such a short time that was what happened. They went from friends to family. It was how apocalyptic life was. Jackson. That was a place they would keep in mind for when they decided to stop traveling. Jordan felt the hand on his leg and he moved his gaze to Asher. A warm smile as he finished his food. “I know we are gorgeous, thank you.” He said softly as Kaleb too finished his food and sighed. They couldn’t delay the inevitable much longer.

This was the end, and they could not waste it. Asher turned his attention to Kaleb, and all the resolve he had disappeared. How could he be so afraid? Why was it all so confusing? He took Kaleb’s hand as he finished eating. “When you get tired of roaming and exploring, you come find me, okay?” That was all he could do, because he wasn’t ready for anything else. Not yet. He would need the years to pass through to realize how much he should have done. Carlos also finished and gathered the utensils to clean off and put away. He was feeling equally as forlorn, though he would not show it. Not when Kaleb needed him. So he smiled as he worked. He smiled and occasionally made suggestive faces as Jordan for fun.

Kaleb had handed his utensil to Carlos when he felt the hand take his own. A soft smile on his face as he looked at him. “Of course. Once I’m done, we’ll be there to find you.” Kaleb said, nodding his head. He squeezed the hand that held his and leaned forward. Kaleb gave Asher a gentle kiss and then pulled back. “Remember this is not good bye. This is see you soon.” Kaleb said smiling. Jordan stood up and began collected blankets and packing up. He was trying to avoid saying goodbye, because he didn’t want to leave his family. But he knew that he’d see them soon, deep down.

Asher would remember that kiss. It was seared on his lips like a tattoo they could not remove. Since he had Kaleb there, he used him to stand up again. He might as well use the resources that he had until he couldn’t anymore. No reason not to. He wished he could say something to that. To agree. Not goodbye. It felt like goodbye. It felt like they may never see each other again. They were determined, though. If anyone could find each other in this world, it would be them. Kaleb and Carlos were new to travel. They weren’t hunters. They couldn’t track him down like he could them. Despite that, he still had faith. Carlos packed up their blankets and shoved them into the packs as well as the utensils. He moved to Jordan and gently touched his cheek. Then his chin. “Hey you. I require some things before we go.”

Kaleb smiled as Asher used him to stand up. And once he was standing, Kaleb wrapped his arms around him carefully. “Thank you. For everything.” Kaleb whispered in his ear before he pulled away. He turned to look at Carlos and Jordan. Jordan who was still trying to pack, still avoiding this. Until he felt the touch to his cheek, his chin. He looked up at Carlos and swallowed hard. A sad yet cocky grin crossed his face. “Is that so beautiful? What do you require?” He asked, not allowing his voice to waver.

There seemed no need for thanks in this situation, though perhaps Asher could thank Kaleb as well. Thank him for being so patient. For being exactly who he needed. He hoped that they did help Kaleb and Carlos somehow. They could help open their eyes like meeting the two a year ago helped Asher understand not only himself but Jordan as well. That was why they had companions even temporary ones. “Take care of that big galumph. He needs someone to ground him to earth.” He gestured to Jordan. “Like that one.” He looked at the two as well. Carlos brought both of his hands to Jordan’s cheeks. “Luck.” He captured Jordan’s lips with his own for the first kiss. “Memory.” The second, a little deeper. “Promise.” The third, even deeper and longer. “And.” He kissed Jordan like they weren’t being watched by their partners. Like this kiss was about to go somewhere else. Hands in hair, the back of his neck, on his chest, down his arms. It was almost feverish how intense it got so quickly. And then Carlos tore away in the middle of it. No lingering. No lead up to the end. Literally in the middle of a kiss that took his breath away. “A cliffhanger. Now we know we have to finish that.”

Kaleb smiled as he looked back at Carlos and Jordan. “Yes. I’ll take care of mine and ground him if you do the same.” Kaleb said, seeing the two saying their own form of goodbye, no not goodbye. See you soon. Jordan looked at Carlos, feeling those hands on his cheeks, he kissed him back, his skin sparking from the contact. He kissed him each time, but the last one literally took his breath away. He could feel the touch down his arms, his chest, neck, and he wanted to continue this but he didn’t. “We definitely have to finish that.” Jordan agreed, before he pulled free from Carlos. He took his hat off his head and set it on Carlos’ with a smile. “Something to remember me by beautiful.” Jordan said, taking a step back and swinging his pack on his back. A hand out to Asher. “You ready gorgeous?” He asked, as Kaleb moved over to Carlos’ side. This was it.

Carlos ran his fingers across the brim of his new hat and tipped it down. “I’ve been wanting a hat like this.” He took it off and held it between the two pairs. He winked at Kaleb, sliding his free arm around his waist, and kissed him like he was the only thing in the world that mattered. And that was true. He slipped the hat back on just in time to see Asher, who had taken a moment to grab his pack without help, and was taking Jordan’s hand. The way he looked at Jordan was exactly how he felt about the man he held. Asher was the first to step away, because he never was one for lingering moments. “Mmhmm. I am most certainly ready.” To find a place to stay. To reunite Jordan with his father figure. To build a real life that they could keep. Yeah, he was ready.

Kaleb smiled at Carlos and shook his head. “You look very handsome in that.” Kaleb said as he watched the other two. He smiled at the kiss and rested his head on his shoulder. “Let’s go then gorgeous.” Jordan said, winking at the two and turned around, leading Asher towards Wyoming. Towards Jackson. And hopefully towards Joel. He looked back once to see Kaleb waving at them before he looked at Carlos and smiled. “Come on love.” Kaleb said, turning them away in the opposite direction to explore some more.

Asher had the remnants of a smile that shadowed his face as they walked through the trees. A smile that he thought might stay for a little while longer and then might stay at the back of his mind for times when he needed something to remember. Or when it was better to be a little happy than sad. Or perhaps when it was better to be a little sad than happy. He could hear Carlos’ voice from behind them. He had never been very quiet, had he? “You know where I think it would be so cool to go? Ireland. I was looking in this book of photographs…” But his voice soon drained away as the two sets walked further apart. Asher was going to miss them, and that was an interesting feeling. They had run into other people before. People Asher did not like, and often killed, and people he did like, and did not kill. No one he wished would stay. Not even that first couple. He didn’t mind them so much. They weren’t home though. It was time to find home.

Jordan knew many people in his life. Many he wanted to see again, many he didn’t want to ever meet again and a few that left an impression on him. Carlos and Kaleb were a pair that left an impression on him. He heard Carlos’ voice fade away and did not hear Kaleb’s response. He squeezed Asher’s hand gently as they walked away. It was time to find home. “They were something else weren’t they gorgeous. I will miss them. I hope you aren’t upset I gave him the hat.” He said, wanting to break the silence that had settled on them.

Asher looked at him confused for a moment then shook his head. “Nah, I’m not upset. I think it’s cute that you gave it to him. You’re this sweet romantic, and I have always loved that about you.” He grinned as he looked away. “He better be wearing it when we see them again, or he better have a good reason not to be.” He shrugged. It did not really matter, but it was nice to think that they were going to have a conversation later. It was a planned one. An official one that was going to happen. That made the situation feel a lot less sad.

Jordan felt a blush on his face as he looked at Asher, hearing that. “I’m glad my sweet romantic side is something you love.” He said with a chuckle as he walked then smiled. “He better be or I’m going to be very upset and no one wants that to happen.” Jordan said with a shake of his head. “I’m going to miss them but I’m not going to miss traveling. Speaking of, did you want to avoid big cities on our way? It’ll add a day or two to the trip but I don’t mind.” Jordan said, glancing at Asher.

“Lovebug,” Asher began, his voice filled with a kind of judgement reserved only for teasing his favorite person, “I was literally stuck in a mob of infected who tore at me like hungry wolves at their pray. I do not need to gather any more supplies than what we already have. I’m honestly pretty full.” He slowed them slightly so that he could slip behind and push his cheek to Jordan’s. He loved to feel the warmth of it when he blushed. “Besides, I have everything right here to protect me. You did save me after all. Again. Like you always do.”

Jordan heard that voice filled with judgement and teasing. “Right. Of course gorgeous. How could I ever forget?” He asked, chuckling as he walked. “So big cities are out, forests are much better anyway.” He said, noticing Asher slow them slightly and slip behind him, feeling the cheek push to his own. The blush only worsened, the warmth creeping in more, cheeks turning red. “I wasn’t about to let my love become infected food. I’ll always save you from anything.” He said as they moved. Where sadness once sat in his bones, anticipation filled it back up. He was looking forward to one last trek, one last travel and then home, rest, and if rumors were right, finding Joel.

The rush of additional warmth made Asher smile even wider. This was good. This was great even. Those they parted with brought him a renewed hope that he may not have had otherwise. They may have been wandering still and taken longer to decide where to go. They may never have gotten to Joel. That’s where they were going. He kissed Jordan’s cheek and took his spot beside him, lacing his fingers through Jordan’s, and sighed contentedly. “I love you. Even if you love everyone else too.” He laughed to himself as they walked. “You’re lucky I find that endearing. Mm, okay.” Suddenly, it was like he was rejuvenated. “I think when we get to Jackson and we find Joel, I’d like to tell him all the troubles he has caused me personally.”

Jordan hummed at the kiss to his cheek and glanced at Asher when he came up beside him. He felt their fingers lace together and then he heard his words. “I love you too gorgeous. And I’m happy you find that endearing. Makes everything so much better. Because I have you no matter what.” Jordan said, squeezing his hand gently. His eyes narrowed at those last words and he shook his head with a grin. “Oh? You’re going to tell on me? Because let’s be fair here, I’m your biggest trouble and you love me for it. Though, I would suggest not starting off with where you use to live. If he asks, say literally anywhere else. Especially since he.. probably wouldn’t be happy to know you were part of the hunters in Pittsburgh.”

Asher was in a strangely good mood. “You can’t save yourself from this, lovebug. When we find him, I’m going to tell him exactly what I’ve had to put up with.” He paused. “In moderation.” Jordan was probably right. Saying that he was one of the men who tried to kill Joel and Ellie was not likely to work out in his favor. “I’m going to tell him that you infiltrated my home, manipulated me into helping you despite you being against all of my people, got yourself into a situation that required me to lie to everyone I’d ever known, made me risk my life countless numbers of times, murdered my student, and that was all just in the first day or so.” He squeezed the hand he held. “I’ll tell him that this was all his fault. That he raised this constant plague of mine.” He paused for dramatic effect. “And that I love every part of that. I guess I could tell him that too.”

Jordan groaned playfully, glancing at Asher with the saddest eyes he could manage. “You’re going to tell my dad all the problems I caused you and then you’ll tell him you loved every part? I’m pretty sure there were parts in the beginning you didn’t love me if memory serves right gorgeous.” Jordan said, his sad face turning into one with a smirk. “Then again, he might be proud of what I did. I saved you from people who were not good for you. I helped you.” Jordan replied as he sighed happily. “Is it weird that I kinda can’t wait for you to meet him?”

Asher rolled his eyes. “You don’t want me to tell him how I actually felt about you in the beginning. He will not love that version of me for many reasons. For that. For being a hunter. For what I did before that.” There were so many reasons that Asher knew he would never be that good person that he was trying so hard to become. He was not really sure what he was going to do when they found Joel again, but he was sure it was not going to be all roses. Unless Asher wanted to lie. He could. But was that what he should do? “It means I’ve made a very good impression on you. Which is shocking but also very sweet. You’re full of sweet today.”

Jordan snorted a laugh as he flicked his gaze towards Asher. “Mm. You mean the part where you aimed a gun at my face? Or when you ‘killed’ me? Or how about when you led me out of that city only to get stabbed because of it?” Jordan asked as he walked. “We all have pasts and Joel’s isn’t any better. I heard stories of his time before Boston. And there’s a reason he made it through your old city.” Jordan added as he looked at Asher again. “And what can I say? It must be because I just love you. And want you to know that. And you saved me gorgeous, what’s a better impression than that?”

Everything Jordan said was correct. Asher knew more heinous of crimes. “I mean the parts where I considered leaving you in those tunnels with the infected. Or leaving you in chains with Diego. Or giving up my hidden bank vault to give them back to you. Or losing you in one of those many rooms and halls and let Darling take you back.” There were so many times he questioned everything. “Actually shooting you at the beginning. Shooting you later as we made it through the city. Sending you into one of the many traps. Killing you where you hung.” They had a lot of moments where he did not kill Jordan like he thought he should have. He was so glad he had not. “So maybe you made an impression me, because instead of killing you, I fell in love with you. Maybe we can tell him that story.”
