Theo helped Alex up slowly. He was feeling the music in his heart with this change in luck. “How good is your balance?” he asked Alex. “And also the rest of you? Because walking is hard, and I don’t want this thing moving.” He pointed to Kai. “Had a thought. Alex sandwich. What if someone is in front of us and someone is behind so if anything goes wrong, we have more hands make it right?” Ezekiel stood on the other side, arms crossed over his chest, ignoring the wound. “I’m on this side.” Theo shrugged. “Cool, Kai? Wanna be my backup over here?

Alex looked at Theo and heard his question, before he looked at the ladder, getting to his feet with Theo's help. "Normally I have great balance, though my legs are sore and I'm not sure how it affected my balance." Alex admitted, as he saw him point to Kai. Kaiden saw Ezekiel with his arms crossed over his chest and clearly ignoring his wound. He rolled his eyes and turned back to Theo. "I'm coming." He said, walking the ladder over carefully. "I'll walk in front, you walk behind him. Alex, hold my shoulder. Theo keep your hands on his sides." Kai suggested. "Ezekiel, put both feet on the ladder on your side to keep it from shifting." He said as he made it to the other side and turned around.​

This was his brother. Ezekiel had other siblings. He would do a lot for them, but Alex, despite not being of blood relation, was somehow his favorite sibling. He should have been right there helping him. He should have been more careful. He should have been a lot of things for Alex, and yet, somehow, he kept doing the wrong thing. He ruined the rest of Alex’s experience at Marty’s Gate. He wanted to have a conversation when they saw the wolves. He ran off and left him behind. There were a lot of things he did wrong, and he knew that he wasn’t to blame. That was Kaiden. So he stood there on the other side, watching as these two wolves helped his brother to safety instead of doing anything to help. Or hinder. He did as was asked of him, holding down the other side so that it stayed still. He stood there as Theo and Kaiden moved him across the ladder. This should have been easy for Alex. This should have been something that they did without issue. A ladder gave more footing than parts of the sky bridge. He waited until they made it to the other side, and then he dropped his arms from his chest. Dropped that wall but only for one of them. “Alex? Are you okay?” No more hardness. Only genuine worry.

Kaiden helped Theo get Alex across the ladder, noticing that when they did make it over, Ezekiel had dropped his arms from his chest. Alex noticed the blood this time and narrowed his eyes. "I'm fine. But.. Ezekiel.. your arm." He whispered, pointing to it. "T- Theo! Can.. can you patch him up?" Alex asked, looking at the younger wolf. Kaiden watched for a moment before he shook his head and turned to walk further in. He pulled out his own blanket and laid it on the cold cement. Alex could sit on the blanket once he was in warm clothes so that the cement floor wasn't too cold on his already chilled legs.​

Having seen the injuries on his back and the way that his body shook from the cold, Ezekiel did not believe Alex at all. That was the kind of fine that he might say, which was commendable but unacceptable when it came from someone who was not him. At Alex’s worry, he looked at his arm again. It did not look pretty, so he would give them that. “Alex,” he said, his voice lower now. Calmer. Calmer for Alex. “It’s not that bad. We can deal with it later.” He stepped over and wrapped his arms around Alex, not paying much attention to where the bloody part of his arm touched since it was his own jacket. “I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I should have been better for you.” He pulled away and looked at Theo. “Help me get him inside?” Theo nodded. “Can do. And I’ve got clothes for him to change into so he doesn’t lose all those limbs to hypothermia.” Ezekiel glared but Theo ignored it.

Alex bit his lip as he heard that lower voice, the calmer one. He groaned at the words, and stiffened when Ezekiel wrapped his arms around him. He heard the whisper and shook his head. "It's fine." He said softly, as he watched Ezekiel pull away. Alex looked at Theo and moved with them into the building, and Kai looked up at them. "Theo, the first room down the hall is clear and empty. He can change in there." Kaiden said, having heard him. Alex looked at Ezekiel, this one was more of a hard stare and a pointed look at his arm and shook his head. He looked to Theo so he could change into dry clothes.​

Theo helped him forward and through to the room that Kaiden found for them. Ezekiel walked along until they were there and then he stopped and put his hands out to Theo. Theo, unsure what that meant, just stared at him. “Clothes.” Theo blinked. Then he got it. “Oh! Right. I have those. He moved away from Alex and pulled the clothes out. He held them, and Ezekiel gestured again. Theo sighed and turned to Alex. “Do you think you need help? It won’t be weird or anything if I-“ “If he needs help,” Ezekiel interrupted, “I will help him. Clothes.” No amount of Alex staring at the arm, which he was no longer looking at in case it really did look as bad as it felt, was going to make him even consider dealing with that until Alex was better.

Alex stopped when Theo did and heard Ezekiel ask for the clothes. He wanted to cross his arms, and childishly, stomp his foot and refuse to move until he got that arm checked out. But somehow, Alex had a feeling that wouldn't work. He pushed out a heavy sigh and moved towards Ezekiel. "Let's go so I can get changed." Alex said, looking at him. Meanwhile Kaiden was watching the interaction between Theo and Ezekiel carefully, he didn't want anyone else getting hurt today.​

If he had to, Ezekiel would take those clothes from him. He, hard as stone, did not move. Theo threw back his head and sighed as dramatically as he could, because working with Ezekiel was like trying to convince the dogs that the dead bird was not a snack. He held the clothes out, and Ezekiel took them. Theo put his hands up and back away. “You need any help, ju-“ “We will be fine.” Theo sucked in that deep breath and nodded, twisting around so that he could walked back to Kai. When he was no longer facing them, his eyes widened almost cartoonishly. Ezekiel looked at Alex. “Okay.” He was only there if Alex needed the help.

Alex couldn't help it as a chuckle slipped out at Theo's dramatic sigh, a smile on his face as he felt a soft smile on his face. He turned to move with Ezekiel a little bit away from the others and brought both arms to his shirt. He sucked in a deep breath and pulled his shirt off in one swift movement. Any pain response he might've had, he silenced. His hand reached out to grab the shirt and slipped it on. Then he did the same with the pants, though this was a little more difficult as he went to pull them off and the fabric caught on his ankle and he tripped over it, heading for the ground as he fell. Kaiden snorted a laugh as he saw those eyes and patted the blanket beside him for Theo to come join him. ​

Ezekiel was not about to let any of them have the satisfaction of a laugh. He was too busy trying to be whoever it was that he was trying to be. If they were back on the island with a group of their own people, he probably would have laughed. He would have smiled. He would have an entirely different stance in that moment. He had literally never been like this with anyone before. He stood to the side as Alex worked on getting the clothes on. He wanted to help, but he also did not want to overstep. He did not want to take that from Alex. When he tripped though, Ezekiel was on the ground to catch him. “Careful. I don’t want you getting anymore hurt than you already are.” Theo happily made his way over and plopped down beside Kai. He fell back like he was exhausted, and he was. “You sure can pick, ‘em, man. At least it’s been an adventure, huh?”

Alex narrowed his eyes as he was caught, those words hitting him as he rolled his eyes. "Says you who won't get that arm looked at." He said in a rough voice. When Alex cared, he cared a lot. It was a flaw he would carry for life. Alex rightened himself and finished pulling on the pants without any further issues. He took his wet clothes and laid them out on a busted table to dry. "Can we go sit without another fight starting.." Alex asked. Kaiden looked at Theo when he plopped down and saw him fall back like he exhausted and chuckled. "Told you it'd be a fun time outside the stadium." He said with a grin on his face.​

Ezekiel too rolled his eyes, and he also smiled. He was the Ezekiel he usually was. He even laughed a little. “I will. You were more important. I have had much worse done to me before.” He frowned at the request. “It is not that I want to fight…” He diverted his eyes. Was this shame? Yes, a little. “He speaks, and I get so angry. I can’t help it. I have tried not to be so bothered, but everything he says makes me so furious.” He looked back at Alex and smiled weakly. “I can try to be civil. I am normally so good at that.” Theo laughed more at that. “Oh, for sure you did. And when we go back, we can tell them that we successfully ran away from a bunch of infected, saved a Seraphite from imminent death via rapids, and then also teamed up to have a picnic with them.” He pointed to Kai. “Our parents would be so proud of us.”

Alex saw the smile, heard that little laugh and smiled happily. "As long as you have it looked at, I'm okay." He admitted then he heard him, and saw that frown. He saw Ezekiel divert his eyes. "Perhaps you both feed off each other." Alex said quietly before he saw that weak smile. "Try for me." He said with a nod, turning so he could be helped back to the blanket. Kaiden grinned and laughed shaking his head. "Yeah, I'm sure dad and papa would so proud of us for helping them. But then again, they might not know that scars are Seraphites, we could say just that and they'd be like, oh good job."​

This is why he liked having Alex around. He made everything so much clearer. It was nice to have someone who seemed to see the world in the same way that he did. Ezekiel smiled again as he walked over to support Alex. “Perhaps.” It was an interesting thought. “I will try for you. But only for you. I will not try for him.” Even as he said it, because he was only with Alex, he let a little chuckle slip through those words as they moved. Theo meanwhile was still laughing with Kai. “Oh, you’re so right. They could be like ‘What are Seraphites?’ and then we can be like ‘You know, just people who are out… and need help?’” This was devolving quickly, and his laughs just got more and more as he talked. “I am sure this would totally work on all of them, especially your dad. He wouldn’t freak out at all that we were hanging out with random people he doesn’t know about.”

Alex smiled as he heard that and nodded. "Thank you." He replied, hearing that little chuckle slipping out. He shook his head, having a feeling that there was a reason they both reacted this way, but he wasn't sure. He heard Theo laughing as they headed towards them and he couldn't help the smile growing on his face. "I can imagine Dad's face. 'You are such a selfless adult helping these people.' and he absolutely wouldn't freak out knowing that." He replied, laughing as he thought about his dad. The literal definition of helicopter parent even though Kaiden was twenty three. Part of why they left in the first place.​

This was a promise that he intended on keeping. Ezekiel would try for Alex. He knew that it would not be easy. He was certain that it would be devastatingly hard. Hearing them in there put him on edge again. Hearing that voice pushed him instantly to his limit, and he used to think that was so much more than it was now. As they approached, still with that slight smile on his face, he asked, “Having fun in here?” Theo, from the floor, looked at them and tried to nod, which went poorly. “Absolutely! Come join us!” He sat up and scooched so that there was more room on the blanket. “It will be like a party. Only like not a rager since that’s how we call all the infected to us, and we did that once, and it sucked. You remember that, friends? Yeah, those were the days.”

Alex was thankful that Ezekiel was going to try anyway. He heard both Theo and Kaiden laughing now and as they entered the room, Alex grinned and like the laughter was infections, he chuckled. "No ragers, but the blanket does look comfortable." Alex said as he smiled at the two, moving so he could try and sit down beside Kaiden. He was hoping that by sitting there, it could help with a buffer zone. Kaiden sat that slight smile on Ezekiel's face when he came in and his grin never faded. "Yeah, no ragers but it's still pretty nice." He said, looking at Alex as he managed to sit down. "How're you feeling?" Kai asked as Alex smiled. He was still chilled but the dry clothes helped. "I'm okay, little sore, back hurts a good amount still, but the dry clothes are helping with the chill. Thank you Theo." He said, before he looked at Ezekiel and his arm, clearing his throat slightly as he did. He wasn't going to let up until it was checked out.​

Ezekiel sat after Alex sat, making sure that he could get down okay. Once settled, he leaned back so that his upper body was held up by his hands behind him. He would watch for now. Watch and listen. Theo grinned and leaned in to put a hand on Alex’s knee. “I am glad it’s helping.” He moved back to sitting up. “So, do you guys party or what? Actually, no, let’s back that up. Broader question. What do you guys do when you’re not out like looking for us to kill.” Ezekiel’s face hardened. Theo tried again. “I mean, that’s kind of what we both do, so it’s only fair that we’re honest about it. When we aren’t on patrol, um, well actually we do things like sneak out to explore some more so that’s a bad example. Oh! Uncle Jay and Uncle Soren are always reading when they’re together.” He stopped, smiled ear to ear, and stifled a chuckle. “Okay, that’s what they’re doing when they’re not like… all over each other. Anyway, they read. And when Brian isn’t patrolling, he’s always writing something on that notebook of his. I bet it’s poetry. And oh! Some people like to hang with the animals. What do you guys do?”

Alex listened to Theo ask what they do when they aren't patrolling, and he noticed that Ezekiel's face hardened and heard Theo's second try. Reading? Oh and animals? Alex tilted his head slightly as Kaiden coughed a little. "I like to sit out on the balcony of my room and watched the sun rise and set." He admitted, and usually it was just him watching it, because Owen was either asleep or out. Alex thought for a moment. "Well. I like to climb trees, and hang out in the stable with the horses. There's one there, a black one that I love to take care of and I even get to ride her sometimes. Her name's Midnight." Alex said as he talked about her, smiling happily. ​

That was an unexpected answer. Ezekiel would never have guessed that troublemaker Kaiden who was always running off would like to sit and watch the sun move. That was such a melancholic thing to do. He watched at Kaiden spoke to see how he said it. Was this true. “Do you really?” he asked without thinking. He stayed where he was though he was intrigued. He just that morning was doing the same thing though not from a balcony. Sometimes, though he would sit at the window in his loft and let his legs dangle as he watched the same thing. He wondered if they did that at the same time. Theo answered for him. “Sure he does. It’s kinda boring to be honest. Which is why that’s a him thing and not an us thing. But horses? That’s so cool. I want to right a horse so bad. We’ve got the trucks, and they’re cool or whatever but not like horses.”
