Ezekiel Finch and Theophilus Sharpe (and also the Smith Clan)
Seraphite Warrior, WLF Member | 26, 22 | Current location ;; Washington

“Aren’t you a little old to be grounded?” Ezekiel had not meant to ask it out loud, but the damage was done. He could not take it back once he said it. He was thinking it so hard that it slipped from his mind and sprung off his tongue before he even noticed that it was the question that plagued his thoughts. Theo shrugged, his cheeks tinged with the lightest shade of pink. “I guess you’re never too old when you’ve got a dad who loves you more than anything else in the whole world.” He smiled at Kai hoping that it would make him feel better if he remembered that. “Sorry, Josh. Kai’s cooler. It’s true though. Anyway, okay um for meeting, maybe… us getting somewhere is going to be hard after this. Can you guys maybe sneak over to the hospital? We could leave a note there. And we know when people aren’t there?”

Kaiden blinked as he heard the question, and then looked at Theo, seeing the pink tinge on his cheeks. “That is the entire reason we’re out here now. To prove we’re old enough. And.. to answer your question. Not with my dad.” He admitted. “And thanks, but my papas pretty cool.” He added with a smile. Alex thought about Theo’s suggestion and nodded. “That could work. Maybe tell us where at the hospital you’ll plan on leaving it?” He asked. “Because leaving the note there would probably be a lot safer for both of us.” Alex added as he looked between the two wolves.

This dad did seem like he was a lot. He expected much and protected much. That was far more involved than Ezekiel’s own father ever was. He was a good man, but it was not an involved man. Ezekiel thought that was normal. Theo tried to imagine the hospital. “I mean, it’s a pretty big area, but honestly we don’t go too often over there. Maybe in one of the medical tents out the front?” He looked at Kai as he thought about this. “If anyone else saw it, they’d probably assume it was something left over from FEDRA when they were out there. Maybe we leave it there which would be more obvious, but we can always be super vague.” He wasn’t sure where else they could go. “If you leave a note, we can leave something in return so that you know we got it.” Theo was shocked by Ezekiel’s contribution to the conversation. “Um like what?” Ezekiel narrowed his eyes in thought. “A symbol. Marking. Something more permanent but nothing too obvious.”

Kaiden looked at Theo as he spoke before he nodded. “We can hang it near the ground of the medical tent closest to the park. And maybe write something like a survivor would’ve wrote? Um. Like. ‘Found a supply stash in this place..’ and then we’d write the meet up spot and sign it with a KT?” Kai suggested, shrugging his shoulders. His eyes widened as he looked at Ezekiel before he nodded. “Maybe cut the initials EA in the tent or something?” He said, as Alex nodded. “That’s not a horrible idea honestly.”

Theo nodded and nodded some more and then patted his leg. “I think we have something worthy of this crazy adventurous outing after all.” He placed his hands on the blanket in front of him. “We leave the note, you leave your initials, and then we start this whole beautiful cycle. What do you guys think?” Ezekiel let one side of his lips curl upwards. “If you’re ever… ungrounded?” Theo laughed and then sighed as he ran a hand through his hair. “Yeah… yeah that will probably be a while. So don’t get too sad when we don’t have that ready for you soon.” Ezekiel was not sure when it happened, but he had relaxed as he sat there. He did not notice this. He also never actually responded to the question.

Kaiden nodded, this wasn’t how he thought this outing would go, but it seemed to be working out. Now. How long before something was said and they were fighting again. Kai looked over at Ezekiel and saw that one side of his lip curl upwards. He snorted a laugh himself at the comment. “Yeah. I’d say probably a month or more if dad has his way. Though papa might be able to temper that to a month.” He said with a chuckle. Alex smiled. “I think this is a great start to something wonderful.” He said. He was trained as a warrior, and that was what he was, but that didn’t mean he enjoyed the fight between their groups.

Ezekiel leaned just a little into Alex. Not enough to hurt him but enough to be there with him. Present in the moment and not stuck wherever it was he was always getting stuck when they were around these wolves. “How is this for your third day allowed off the island? All the adventure you wanted?” His eyes flicked for a second to Kaiden, and his stomach churned. Adventure. He brought them back to Alex. Theo’s jaw dropped. “Third day? Kai! We get to be like a training exercise! Only we taught you how to, you know, go against everything you’ve learned.” He shook his head. “Man, we really are trouble, aren’t we?”

Alex felt Ezekiel lean a little into him and he felt a smile cross his face. “It’s pretty crazy honestly but I love the adventure..” Alex admitted as Kaiden looked at them, before hearing Theo. “I am only trouble when I’m with you. But I guess.. in this case, yes. You’re right. We’re trouble.” Kaiden said as he leaned back on his hands, letting out a low sigh of contentment. He had managed to relax a little bit and so far everything was going better than he could’ve imagined it to.

“Only trouble with me?” Theo asked with a laugh threatening to bubble over. “You remember how you got lost and needed this dude to save your butt? That was you being trouble all on your own. I’m not part of your patrol.” Ezekiel almost wanted to laugh as well. The idea of these two men not being trouble was too difficult for him to imagine. He had only seen them as trouble to this point. He was amused by how much he could learn just by sitting. He drew the attention. “I second that. I was there for said trouble without Theo.”

Kaiden looked at Theo, hearing his words and a flush covered his face. How could he possibly forget that he’d gotten in trouble all on his own. Kaiden’s gaze shifted when Ezekiel spoke, his lips twitched up in a small smile as he sighed dramatically and flopped onto his back. “What is this? Pick on Kaiden day?” He asked, covering his eyes with an arm and sighing again. He uncovered his eyes and looked up and over at Alex. “Are you going to agree too?” He asked with a small grin. “Me? No. I’ve only ever seen you be trouble with Theo.” Alex said with a laugh. “See! I like him.” Kaiden replied, not moving from where he was still flopped over.

Ezekiel hummed low as he listened to Kaiden. Despite how he felt earlier, the room atmosphere had changed. Kaiden felt less like a child whining and playing and more like an adult willing to play as well. That was a nice change. He was not sure when that changed. Even when he was almost angry again, it was a little different. But then again, when they first met, he was an adult then too. “You can’t have my Alex,” he warned, and though there was a hardness in his voice, it was softer than it had been. “He isn’t for the taking. I need him to keep me balanced.” He did not know that was how it worked until he said it out loud, but then nothing felt as true. Theo flopped down beside Kai. “Don’t worry, buddy. I still love you even if you’re trouble always.” He leaned his head against Kai’s shoulder. “Because that’s what friends and brothers are for. To always be on your side no matter what kind of nonsense you get yourself into.”

Kaiden flicked his gaze to Ezekiel when he heard that warning, there was a hardness in his voice but it wasn’t as hard. Hm. “Fine. At least I have you.” Kai said, glancing at Theo. He felt the head on his shoulder and laughed softly. “Thanks man. I’m glad I have my friends and brothers on my side.” He said, turning his head to rest it on Theo. Alex heard Ezekiel’s words and blinked as he did. What? He kept him balanced? He looked at Ezekiel and smiled as he patted his shoulder gently. “I’m glad I’m so helpful for you.”

Never had anyone ever been so necessary in his life. So helpful. Ezekiel never realized how much he floated without someone to ground him. It was nice to have Alex there to do that. He so appreciated him. “This is why he can’t have you, even if you are going to agree with his attempt at pushing the blame off onto the partnership of theirs.” Theo raised a hand and shook it. “Don’t knock the attempt. It was good. But also true. Kai is trouble on his own and more trouble with me. I feel like we’re both trouble, which is why we tend to always be in trouble.”

Alex simply laughed softly, hearing Ezekiel's words and shaking his head. "Don't worry, he won't have me." Alex said with a grin on his face while Kaiden huffed and rolled his eyes. "Okay, so I might be trouble on my own, but Theo. You are more like my partner in crime, we get in more trouble together." Kai agreed as he looked at the other two. "And I guess you can keep Alex, I've got more than enough grounding with my troublemaking brother." Kaiden added, looking at Theo.

“Would that be because the two of you are going to be grounded when you return home?” Now that Ezekiel was not baseline simmering in fury, he was almost finding the conversation pleasant. The play on the words was entertaining if not amusing. “Alex, we have the far better deal, I believe.” At least when they returned, they would not be regarded as children. Though, if they were to return late once more with injuries that they could not explain well, their superiors may begin to look at them the same way as their wolf friends’ superiors did to them. Theo shrugged. “Meh.” Not dignifying it with an answer meant that he did not have to confirm or deny what they already knew.

Kaiden looked at Ezekiel when he asked that and he simply smirked. Not a true answer but close enough in his mind. Alex simply shook his head as he thought about it for a moment. "We might have a better deal, though I know I'm going to get questioned when I get home." Alex said, knowing both his mother and Juliet would be asking about the cuts on his arms, legs and back. Kaiden thought about those words. Going back home. When should they return home? It wasn't going to be pretty no matter what but he wasn't sure if taking longer to go back was better or worse.

This was true. Alex did get pretty hurt while they were out there. How were they supposed to explain that to his family? They could tell them the truth about exploring where the waters ran on the mainland, and that would likely worry everyone. Why did they go alone? Why did they not tell anyone where they were going? How were they able to get him back. “Don’t worry. You are very strong. No one can deny that of you.” He sighed as he sat there. Unsure. Again. He spent so much time unsure. “Speaking of which, what are we doing now? Do you want to sit here with the mongrels a little bit longer?” He eyed the other two with interest. How would they react. Theo mostly did not notice.

Alex looked at him, wondering what his idea would be. The truth would have them questioned but how else do they explain such an injury? He wasn't sure but his brother's words made him smile. Reassured for now, he nodded his head. "Thank you." He said, before he heard his question. "We can stay here a little longer, though it is getting dark out." Alex said as he looked outside. Kaiden huffed at the word use and shook his head, crossing his arms. Mongrel was no better than mutt, but it was more tolerable. "We need to get moving soon Theo or we'll end up staying here tonight." Kai said with a sigh.

“Do we have to?” Theo asked. “I kinda like it here. It’s peaceful and quiet. Well, when you two get along.” He smiled at Kai and then at Ezekiel who was giving him the kind of side eye that felt a little closer to not getting along than doing so. He wondered how much of this niceness was for Alex. Ezekiel raised one brow as he considered the words that came from each of his companions. “Maybe we should be going then. Traveling in the dark is not exactly ideal, especially when you are injured. If you are able.” “Ah, come on. Don’t ruin the party. It’s so gooood.” Theo sat up but only enough to see everyone better.

Kaiden looked at Theo and shook his head. "We don't have to move from this place, it's safe enough for tonight." Kai relented, seeing that smile from his brother. His attention turned to the other two, and Alex's injuries. "Would it be wise to travel so soon though? Would that make his injuries worse?" Kai mentioned, seeing Alex wince a little as he moved. The young Seraphite looked over at his clothes. "My clothes are not dry yet either. And I cannot walk back in this. No offense Theo." Alex said, looking at Ezekiel once more.

Ezekiel did not want to admit that Kaiden was right, but he was. He already knew that Alex should not be moving. This kind of injury was not one that was better from a wolf’s medical kit and sitting on a blanket for a while. “None taken,” Theo replied as he nodded. “Though my clothes are better. Sorry, man. Also no offense.” Ezekiel sighed. “I concur. We can stay here a while. Perhaps the night or much of it. We can leave in the morning while it is still dark so that we can return to the island before the majority are awake. Then we will only have your family to answer to. Much easier than the group who will be expecting us.” He did not love this idea, but it was better than anything else he could think of in that moment. He turned his attention to the wolves who were the reason they were still there. The reason they were in this predicament. He frowned. They may have been cordial, but was that enough to trust them? Ezekiel stood. He felt staying put any longer might be a problem. He felt almost like he was suffocating. He put a hand on Alex’s shoulder. “Rest.” And he moved away from the rest of them. Walking down another hall. Theo threw up both hands. “Didn’t I just say don’t ruin the party? What a party pooper.”

Alex heard Theo and smiled, and then he chuckled. "Don't worry, none taken. Your clothes are quite comfortable." He said before his attention turned to Ezekiel. "Okay, that would be a good idea, and easier." He agreed with him as he slowly, and carefully adjusted and laid down. He was tired from the day's rather hectic events. Kaiden was surprised to hear Ezekiel agree that they should stay the night. He also watched him stand up and walk down another hall. He heard Theo's words but Kai just sighed. He stood up and shook his head. "If this goes wrong, I'm sorry in advance." He muttered to Theo, and followed after him. Down the hall. "Ezekiel?" Kaiden called, looking for him.

Theo looked up at Kai and sighed. “No man don’t do it.” He sighed and waved a hand towards him before finally conceding with, “If I hear yelling, I will come after you.” He watched Kai disappear down the hall after the guy who drove him crazy, and they weren’t about to have Theo or Alex to hold them back. Ezekiel wandered through one hall after another until he thought that he might finally be alone. Or, perhaps, as alone as he would allow himself to be when he needed to get back to Alex sooner rather than later. He needed a moment away. He was having a hard time remembering who he was. He found himself in a room that was crumbling like so many others. He leaned against a still standing shelf full of things from the old world and stared out a window into the impending darkness cast around them.

Kaiden heard the comment about not to do it, but he also couldn’t leave things alone. It was one of his flaws. And one that would probably start a fight if he wasn’t careful. Kaiden walked down the halls, listening for footsteps. He looked into one room and noticed Ezekiel leaning against a shelf of old world items and staring out the window. Look at him, the moonlight glowing into the window as it rose, he seemed almost like them. Almost normal. Almost.. attractive. Kaiden shook his head and cleared his throat. “Hey.”

Alex sighed, watching Kaiden walk off. “He doesn’t let things go does he?” Alex asked as he laid on his side, the most comfortable way he could lay with his back injury.

This was not at all the kind of day that he thought they were going to have when it started off. How did it start? By watching the sunrise on the back of a cart. Watching the sun rise. Was that really something they had in common? That did not even feel like it could be right. This man was far too different to him. Right? He frowned as he looked out the window. He watched the shadows grow longer, washing away the buildings and the rest of the world. He could still hear the water even though he could not see them. He would have to wait for the moon to shine down on it better to see the glint of the moving rapids. The sound of someone behind him startled him, and he turned to look back. Oh. Kaiden. He followed him? His arms crossed in front of his chest, and his eyes averted to the floor. “Hey.” His voice was rougher, almost like he had not spoken in a while. Sunrise and sunset.

Theo joined Alex on the floor, laying on his side and facing his new friend so that they could be on the same level. “No, he really doesn’t. That’s another reason we get in trouble all the time. So, I have this horrible roommate. His name is Brian. Sometimes, when he’s being particularly awful, Kai goes off on him. He never lets Brian have the last word.” And Brian loved to try to have the last word. He was that kind of guy. “What about Zeke?” Really, if he wasn’t there to stop him, Theo could say whatever he wanted. “Does he let things go?”
