Theo was not sure if he was going to be able to get to Alex with the cranky king in his way. Ezekiel gave him what might have been the most threatening glare he had ever seen in his entire life, and he had dealt with Hayden on more than one occasion, and then Ezekiel shifted out of the way to give Theo more room. Theo immediately started cleaning him up and patching. “You’re gonna be okay, buddy. Boy did you hold on forever. Kai, you think you coulda held on that long? I don’t think anyone is that strong.” He winked at Kai as he worked on Alex’s back. Ezekiel said nothing as he observed. He watched every movement on them both like he was searching for the first wrong move. He was. He was entirely wary.

Alex hissed in pain as he felt Theo begin to clean and patch him up. He squirmed in place, and looked at Ezekiel. Kaiden looked at Theo and nodded. “I definitely couldn’t hang on that long. You are quite the strong one.” He replied, seeing the wink from Theo. Kai also saw him squirming in place and set a hand on his leg. “Be still. It’ll hurt a lot less if you are. Trust me. I’ve been injured more times than I can count. Here. Look at this one.” Kai shifted and brought his shirt up to show a long scar across his side and stomach. “Knife caught me during training. It took so many stitches. I thought my dad was going to go crazy because it looked so bad. My papa was the one who did it too, completely on accident.” Kai said as Alex stared at the scar then at Kaiden, his body relaxing as he did. “Remember that day Theo? I swear uncle used so much thread to stitch me up.” Kaiden asked, looking at Theo.​

Ezekiel’s gaze slid from Alex to Kaiden’s scar. That was long. And his own father did that? Interesting. Ezekiel knew what that was like. Perhaps not his own father injuring him but being caught in a training by friendly fire. He said nothing as he watched. Intrigued. Theo, still working, nodded. “Oh yeah, do I remember that. His papa gets him good, and we have to get him to Jacob before his dad noticed, which you would think we be easy since he doesn’t actually do any of the training or anything with us, but he’s got eyes and ears everywhere. He knows before we even get there, and somehow they’ve gotten his crippled butt to the medical tent first. Ooh was that a storm. And then the stitches started, and Kai was a champion, ‘cause, you know, he gets hurt all the time.” He laughed at the jab to his brother. “But there were so many. You, my friend, are clearly far stronger than this guy.” Ezekiel narrowed his eyes as Theo finished covering the wounds. Stitches. Was that something that would be necessary in the future? He was not sure he trusted these two, though he did appreciate their attempts at trying to put Alex at ease.

Kaiden nodded chuckling as Alex’s eyes widened, hearing that. “Yeah, my papa carried me as quick as he could to the medical tent but dad beat us all. I don’t think papa heard the end of it until they went to bed.” He said with a grin, remembering that day. It had been about a year since he’d started training when it happened. “The stitches.. those were not fun.” He said, shuddering. Alex was much calmer and a little more at ease. As he listened to the story, he realized that it really didn’t hurt as much when he stayed still. “Oh. Then there’s this one” Kai said, pulling off his jacket and showing the one he’d gotten one day. It went down from his elbow up to his wrist. “Wire fencing. This one was during a patrol, I jumped a fence and ripped it open. Uncle Jacob was not happy when he had to stitch this one.” Kaiden said with a grin.​

Theo was shaking his head along with the story. He looked over to see which scar Kai was showing now and then laughed. “It’s funny now that it’s over. You wanna guess how his dad responded to that?” he asked Alex though he didn’t really wait for an answer. In an imitation of someone that Ezekiel obviously did not know, he exploded his words. “‘Kaiden! What did you do this time?! JOSHUA?! Why do I let you take him out there? This is too dangerous!’” Theo shoved his hands on his hips and wiggled in place which was his imitation of the angry wobbling of Hayden. He didn’t always wobble, but he did when he was moving quickly. “‘This is why we left FEDRA!’” He had to stop then so that he did not keel over with the laughter that was bubbling over. “Joshua would be Papa for all those confused. He only gets his full name when he’s in trouble, and it’s always with his husband.” Husband. That was intriguing for Ezekiel. They did not all husbands for husbands on the island. But the wolves did that?

Alex looked as best he could at Theo after he’d looked at the scar. He was about to say that he did want to know when Theo all but exploded his words. He caught sight of the wobbling impression and laughed, loudly. Kaiden snorted too, his eyes lighting up in laughter at the imitation of his dad. “Yeah.. dad really went off on Papa that time, though you should’ve seen how angry he was when I strayed away during patrol the other day. He was so mad. Though not as mad as he was after we snuck out.. again.” Kai said, as he looked at Alex who was still thinking over the words. Husband and Husband. It pulled at something inside him that he’d never known before. Hm.​

Ezekiel, intrigued by these stories as well, thought he might have made a connection somewhere. They knew that the wolves had their massive armies, and when they were last together, that army all came. This father of Kaiden’s certainly sounded like the type. “When you say when you strayed away the other day…” He was not sure if he should ask, but he did it anyway. He was too curious not to. “Do you mean when you were surrounded by demons and it was I who saved you?” Theo shoved a hand over his mouth to stop the gasping laugh. “And when you snuck out again? Would this mean that we are currently with you yet again because you… snuck out?” He could not help but be moderately amused. Theo threw up his hands. “I go where he goes. He is the ring leader of this fearless organization.” Ezekiel smirked. “I see.”

Kaiden heard Ezekiel and looked over at him, his brown eyes watching the man curiously. Then his face turned red as he heard Theo’s gasp laugh. “Um. Yes. I.. got distracted by something and I went to investigate. Then I found myself surrounded and you saved me.” He admitted, and then he heard the other comment and nodded once more. “Okay, so the last time we were going exploring.. and didn’t say where we were going. I wouldn’t call that sneaking out. Then we did sneak out and my dad got mad. Like.. really really mad. He was going to keep us locked up in the stadium for who knows how long. So we.. ran away. And here we are.” Kai said, looking at Ezekiel the entire time. He heard Theo’s comment and snorted a laugh, a smirk settling on his own face. “Someone’s gotta be the trouble maker, and someone has to be the accomplice.” He said with a shrug. Alex listened, highly amused by this new information.​

Runaways. They were runaways. Alex and Ezekiel were in the company of men, though that was honestly as questionable as the rest of the situation, who got in trouble for sneaking off and decided to run away. Specifically because his father seemed to be… much. Interesting. He looked from one wolf to the other, seeing them as these strange people they were turning out to be. “How fortuitous for us.” He shrugged off his outer jacket and gently laid it beside Alex. “You are likely cold from that water. Take this.” Below, he revealed his simple tunic that he had rolled up to his biceps. He looked to the other two. “Despite your… troubles, I appreciate what you have done for him.” He bit back the shame of knowing he would have been too late. Of course, this would not have been the case if he had not been so angry about the note. Ah, yes. The note. “Alex, does this not feel an appropriate time to thank Her as well? She guides us.” He eyed the others. “She guides us to lost souls such as our dead friends Kai and T?” The question at the end was clipped. He could not hide the anger now that he remembered.

Kaiden never took his eyes off Ezekiel, and then they landed on his arms. Nope. Stop that. Look anywhere but there. So he focused on the water. Alex accepted the offered jacket and wrapped it around him. His clothes were soaked and he’d begun to feel the chill of the water in his bones. “You’re welcome.” Kai said, still looking away. He was not about to think of this man more than he already was. Kai’s eyes widened as his head shot up to look at Ezekiel. “You found our note?” He asked, his voice low as he heard the clipped tone from the other man.​

Note. This was the point of following them over here, correct? To talk about the note that they left. “Perhaps we should call it a prayer?” Ezekiel folded his arms over his chest. He did not hide the frown that tugged at his lips. The slight twinge that itched at his nostril. “A prayer for what exactly is the question. And to whom?” This was already devolving. He should have gone in with more of a plan than ‘let’s communicate.’ His fingers gripped his arms tightly as he looked at Kaiden. Only him. “A prayer to our Prophet in the place where we feel her presence the most despite it being the place where she was murdered.” So he was not going to tread lightly. Everything they were when it was just him and Alex talking about their strange new acquaintances was gone. It dissolved under the weight of his unbridled anger. Passion. “Yes. We found your note.” Theo was mostly aware of how well this was not going so far.

Kaiden heard the words, saw the frown and refused to look at the arms folded over his chest. Stop that Kai! He shook himself and narrowed his eyes at him. “Okay. So you got our prayer..” Kai’s words were clipped now. “We were considering talking more civilly but it seems that has gone out the window.” He said before he winced slightly. “So maybe we shouldn’t have put it there, but in reality, where else could we put it? That was our.. most logical choice.” He said, watching Ezekiel carefully. Alex looked between the two and then at Theo. He shifted slightly, just so he wasn’t in the middle of whatever this could become. He moved so he was closer to Theo on.. purpose he realized when he thought about it.​

Theo did not mind Alex getting closer because honestly he didn’t want to be in the middle of this nonsense either. He thought when they were talking about this earlier that it was a good idea. Apparently Ezekiel had other opinions. He was just so aggressive. He wanted to know why he was so cranky all the time. Sure, this was a serious thing, and yeah not the best place but Kai was right. What else could they do? Ezekiel was in fact having other thoughts. “Civilly?” he sneered. “You want to talk civilly?” He coughed out a laugh. “You and your army because you’ve run off again? How are we supposed to talk civilly when at any moment your dad could send the entire army to get you?” It felt like this was a reasonable thing to fear. “Or when you’ve defiled the Martyr’s Gate for some childish game you think you’re playing?” The anger was definitely taking over.” Because that’s what this is. I appreciate you taking the time to be an adult to save my brother. It becomes you.”

Kaiden crossed his arms over his chest and narrowed his eyes at the sneer. “My dad does not know where we are. You should know that we don’t come out here normally.” He stated before his eyes flashed. “So how do you propose we talk then if the only place we know you visit is there. Also. I am not a child.” He snipped, his glare bearing down on Ezekiel. This whole trip was literally to prove that he was an adult and could handle himself. Alex could feel the anger and tension. “Guys..” He whispered, not liking this one bit.​

Theo thought maybe they could still diffuse this. “I think maybe-“ “So the great and powerful wolves are not omnipotent as they would have us believe.” Ezekiel no longer even noticed Theo. His entire world was just him being angry with Kaiden. “I believe when they have to send an entire army after you to give you a slap on the wrist, that would be the definition of a child.” He readjusted himself to glare better. “Well, child, you now know we come here. Perhaps we can find a better place for communication since you are so keen.” He did not know why this was something they even wanted to do. He didn’t understand why they were doing any of this. This man plagued his thoughts and his dreams far too much as it was. Additional communication could do nothing but make them angrier.

Kaiden adjusted himself, and actually ended up shifting closer to Ezekiel. His world was blinded as he glared at him. “Call me a child again and I’ll show you that I’m not one.” He snapped, his eyes narrowed in anger. “And maybe we can. Though there must be a way for you to talk with us if you so wished to talk to those who are below you.” He said, his voice still hard and clipped. Alex looked at Theo with a sigh, almost like he’d given up trying to break this apart. ​

Ezekiel leaned in a little closer, breathing now rapid and heavy. His lip quivered in the rage. “And what exactly would you do that proves that you are more than some little boy? Because if you do something to me in your anger, that would be a very young person thing to do.” He was pushing buttons in a way he never thought that he could. Or would. Or should. He was just so furious about everything. Theo shook his head. “Guys, this is not necessary. We were just bonding. What happened?” He looked at Alex like maybe he could explain what he missed in the conversation. “We wrote the note because we wanted to be friends not fight.”
