“You would most definitely come to get me!” Theo argued as he chuckled. “You would come swim after me like the hero that you are. You can’t help it. You get it from your papa.” He made his way over to Kai and the building. “And besides, I wouldn’t fall. I’m a pro-fessional.” He glanced at the building like he was sizing it up. “Yes. I think we absolutely should. Lead the way my fearless leader.”

Ezekiel kicked his legs gently like they were part of the wind that wasn’t there any more. There had been a nice breeze earlier. He wondered if it would return. “Ah, as you do deserve. We had quite the adventures.” He looked out into the trees and the cabins. It was such a beautiful day. “I have had a splendid morning. After a night of almost peaceful rest,” almost because he was plagued by thoughts of far too many things, “I walked the whole of our village and have been here for quite some time.” He smiled at Alex and patted the spot beside him. “Come to join me in my contemplation or do you have plans for the rest of your day?”

Kaiden crossed his arms over his chest as he heard that from Theo. “Hmm. Maybe. Or maybe I’ll let you drown.” Kai said as he chuckled. “My life would be much less dramatic without you in it.” He teased as he looked at the building. It was half destroyed and only looked like it had three stories. “Come on you.” Kai said as he led the way into the building. He moved slowly and quietly and looked around. It was clear so far.

Alex nodded as he heard that. “We certainly have.” He said with a smile on his face. “I’m glad you got some kind of rest. And I was actually wondering if you were busy today. I was kind of hoping maybe you could show me some of those places on our territory on the main land?” Alex asked quietly, looking at Ezekiel with what looked like a hopeful expression.

Theo considered saying more to that, but he didn’t as much as he wanted to. He didn’t want to be the reason that they walked into this dilapidated building and found themselves covered in infected. Again. Though, to be fair, that was because he dropped something and not because he was talking. He slipped inside the building behind Kai, scanning the area around them. He felt bad for the buildings that were falling apart like this.

Busy? Ezekiel listened, intrigued. What an interesting desire. “You long for the main land once more. I like your sense of adventure.” It sparked his own sense of adventure that he felt himself losing the older he got. He was becoming more and more complacent, and that really was not going well for him. “No, as it happens, I am not busy at all.” He hopped off the wagon and took the several steps to be by Alex’s side. “What a splendid idea you had. Exploration is the key to a fulfilled life. Someone once told me that many years ago. Would you like to go now? There is no time like the present.”

So far Kai didn’t see anything in this abandoned building. It was quiet, still and surprisingly empty. Perhaps they were close enough to the Seraphite territory and they cleared it out? Kai didn’t know so he moved like there was infected nearby. Not much supplies were around though so he tried to find the stairs to check the next floor.

Alex nodded as he listened to Ezekiel. “Oh? Oh good!” Alex said with a happy smile. He watched Ezekiel hop down from the wagon and smiled as he watched him draw closer. “I would love to go now. I’m following you since I don’t know exactly where I’m going.” Alex said with a small laugh.

Theo was pretty sure that a bunch of the buildings in this area were like this. Mostly destroyed, lacking in supplies, and possibly lacking in infected. That did not make it any less desirable to explore. He bounded over debris and nature growth until finally he found not stairs but a hole in the ceiling. That was promising. Where there were holes, there were always parts that fell and therefore things to climb up.

Alex’s mood was infectious, and Ezekiel found himself smiling just as much. “Then let’s go. Though, we may want to take some weaponry as a precaution. We are staying in Seraphite territory, but you never know what we will find. Demons and wolves alike have no ability to understand boundaries.” He walked them over to where they could retrieve their safety precautions before they headed out.

Kai followed Theo as he bounded over debris and nature. There he saw the hole in the ceiling. Hmm. He looked around to find something they could climb on to get up there. Ah! “Theo!” He hissed quietly and pointed to some crates. If they could move them to under the hole, they could climb up on them and get up there.

Alex nodded with a smile. “Okay. That makes sense.” Alex said as he followed Ezekiel to get a bow and some arrows. He didn’t need anything else. Alex waited and followed Ezekiel once he was ready and headed towards the mainland. “So.. could we make a stop at Martyrs Gate?” Alex asked, he’d never been there before and it was something he wanted to see.

Theo was studying the fallen in parts of the ceiling and attempting to determine if they were in fact something that would be safe enough to climb when Kai called for his attention. “Crates. That is far better than what I was thinking.” He walked over to them and tested their weight. “Give me a hand with this? We can move it faster together.”

“You haven’t been to Martyrs Gate?” Ezekiel asked, a little surprised. Everyone had been there. “Ah, no, I guess you wouldn’t have. That was silly of me to ask. Sometimes I forget that not everyone is at the same stage of their life. Of course we can see Martyrs Gate. In fact, if I had thought about it, I would have suggested we go there earlier.” It was a place that all should see. With their weapons ready, he moved them along the island to travel to the mainland.

Kaiden nodded as he walked over to the crates with Theo. “Of course.” He said, working with Theo to move the crates relatively quickly and they were able to make a staircase up to the next floor with the crates. “Good job.” Kaiden said as he moved to climb up the crates and stopped at the hole, looking around. “Clear.” He said, climbing onto the second floor.

Alex ducked his head as he heard that. No he hadn’t. Then before he could say anything, Ezekiel said that of course he hadn’t. “Thank you.” He replied. “I’d been wanting to go there once I turned sixteen and could leave but my mom doesn’t want to go and neither did my dad.” Alex explained as they headed along the island to travel to the mainland.

Theo climbed up after Kaiden, waiting as he checked to make sure everything was clear, and then moved onto the second floor as well. He swooped his body around, very much having to rely on his flashlight for visuals in this dark area. Where were the windows? He stepped away from the hole and moved towards what he assumed was the outside of the building. He slipped into one room and nodded. Ah, there were the windows. This place just had horrible lighting in the middle. He stepped to the window to look out at the city. “You know,” he started quietly, “when we aren’t almost dying, the city is pretty cool.”

This did not shock Ezekiel. Many did not wish to travel off the island, even for something so great as the Martyrs Gate, because of the threat that came from the wolves. “My own parents have never seen it. Would you believe that? They told me that She is alive in their hearts and that is enough for them. I think that they are afraid, which is a valid way to view this. It is just an amazing opportunity that is hard not to take.”

Once they got up onto the second floor, Kai clicked on his flashlight and looked around. Hmm. He followed Theo into the room with the windows and stood beside him. He tilted his head slightly to one side and nodded. “It is pretty cool. Makes you wonder what it was like before the world changed.” Kaiden said, looking around. His attention was drawn when he heard skittering. “Theo..? Did you hear that too?” He asked quietly, turning to look at an open door on the other side of the room. He could’ve sworn he saw something peek it’s head out.

Alex looked surprised as he heard that. But then again, his parents didn’t wanna go either. “I agree that the fear is valid, especially after what has happened to us the last few days with demons and wolves.” Alex said as he walked. “But I’ve been wanting to see it for a while now. I just had to be of age first.”

The city was a powerful sight. Sometimes, when his patrol group was up high in some of the buildings, he could see so much of it. He was busy staring and being in awe as he thought about how people had to make these buildings once upon a time, that he did not hear whatever it was that Kai heard. He turned around and stared out into the darkness of the hall. “No…” He kept his voice quiet. Low. “But I believe you. What... did you hear?” He slowly walked to the doorway and peered out into the dark. He didn’t see anything. The darkness was eerie though.

“I used to think that the Elders were too harsh when it came to being of age before doing certain things. When I was fourteen, I wanted to travel. I wanted to explore the mainland. I wanted to be useful, or at least that was what I said. What I really wanted was to explore.” They were close to where they needed to be to move off the island. “If they had let me then, I would never have been safe enough. It is dangerous, and everyone needs to be prepared for that. So, as much as waiting is infuriating, it is important.” He smiled and spoke quieter, conspiratorially. “Though that doesn’t mean I didn’t sneak out and cause trouble anyway.” He shrugged. “But now that we are old enough, it’s no longer trouble. It’s highly regarded behavior.”

Kai looked at Theo as he followed him closer to the doorway. As he joined Theo, Kaiden paused. "Skittering." He whispered as he flicked on his light. Ahead of them two stalkers hissed and dashed into the shadows. "Oh boy.." Kai groaned, knowing that this was not going to be fun. "Should we go after them or should we head back down?" Kaiden asked, they could probably handle two stalkers, as long as there weren't more.

Alex listened to Ezekiel and nodded as he did. "I wanted to explore as soon as I turned twelve. I heard all the tales from the warriors coming back." Alex said as he nodded. He heard the quieter words, almost conspiratorially. "I didn't do that, I never left the island. I got close once though, I had followed a patrol until they crossed over, and I was tempted to follow them onto the mainland." Alex admitted as they walked. "But now I can go over to the mainland and it would be okay." He said as they headed off the island and towards the mainland.

Skittering? Theo stared out into the darkness, the quick movement drew his attention, and Theo understood. Stalkers. Great. Should they leave? It would make sense to leave. They don’t even need to be there. Would they be good at what they did if they left these guys, though? Would other people die if they left? “We can take them,” Theo whispered as he crouched down and swept the area with his flashlight. He needed to learn the area and then they could do it.

Ezekiel nodded, because he certainly understood that. “You have a restless spirit. Or possibly an adventurous one. It will be hard to keep you here as you grow older.” He looked out at the changing scenery as they neared the mainland. “I would know. There is a reason you never find me at home. No one ever does. I am always somewhere. And I am significantly older than you. I have had much time to wander away from anyone else.” He grinned at his next words. “My old group used to be so angry with me for wandering off. I feel for this one when they now have us both.”

Kaiden looked around the darkness, seeing the movement as he flicked on his flashlight. They ducked behind crates as he pulled out his pistol. "Yeah we can." Kaiden agreed, searching through his pack and found a silencer. He screwed it on his pistol and then moved along the left wall. "Go down the right side, maybe we can ambush them." Kai suggested quietly.

Alex looked at Ezekiel and tilted his head slightly as he heard his words. "Where else would I go?" Alex asked quietly, not thinking he'd ever leave the island. He listened to further to Ezekiel and thought about what he said. "Oh. I see. Wandering around. Yeah, that would be me." Alex agreed before he chuckled softly. "I'm sure they won't be angry if we wander off, I hope." Alex said as they drew closer to the mainland.

Ah, silencer. Kaiden and his bright ideas were going to be the reason that they could win this. Theo also grabbed his silencer and screwed it on. With these things, silencers were definitely the way to go. Not tipping the creeps off was key. Theo nodded and silently moved down the right side, quickly moving from one point to another. He paused only when he had cover, swept the area, and kept moving. When he reached the end of the hall, he scanned again. And… there! He waved a hand to grab Kai’s attention and pointed off to the side. That was the top of the head of certain stalker. It clearly had not seen him yet, which was good.

Ezekiel laughed. “I am sure that they won’t even notice if we make it back before we must be together once more. However, if we get lost in there again, they may start to question us.” He paused their conversation as they officially crossed over and were now on Seattle proper. “Here we are. Our first stop is not too far. Martys Gate is a popular destination.”

Kaiden wanted to use the silencer for more than one reason. One so they didn’t tip off the stalkers and two so they didn’t attract anyone else around. Infected or scars.. Seraphites. Kai had to remember they weren’t just scars. The memory of Ezekiel telling him that was still fresh in his mind. Kai caught Theo waving at him and he saw the stalker’s head. Got it. Kai aimed and fired, dropping that one easily. He saw the other by the far door and pointed at it.

“They probably won’t notice unless we do get lost which I hope we don’t.” Alex said as he chuckled. He looked around as they finally made it to the mainland. “Okay. Cool!” Alex’s voice was full of eager excitement as he followed Ezekiel. The joy of finally seeing Martyrs Gate was high. Though he kept looking around to keep an eye out for demons and wolves. He didn’t trust demons at all and he wasn’t unsure about wolves.

There was no better team than the two of them. When Kai and Theo were not in the same group, it made him a little sad. He always wanted to be around his best friend. They had been together forever, and that was probably the problem. Josh and Soren had to keep Kai around, and Theo did nothing but cause more problems when he was with Kai. So, since they were the troublemakers it appeared, he could see why they were not in the same group. He got it. But look at them go now. Who was as good as this? He followed the aim of Kai’s arm, slipping deeper into the room and disappearing into the shadows. Ah, there it was. That would have been a good hiding spot if there weren’t two sets of eyes. Theo pulled out his gun and silently shot its head. It dropped. There was no better team. He scanned the area to see if there were any more of them. So far, it seemed clear.

Ezekiel felt himself mimicking Alex’s excitement as though this were his first time as well. He never knew that having someone like this around would be so beneficial in so many ways. He did not deny it. He rejoiced in the affirmation of this great thing that they were doing. Everyone made a journey to this great place eventually. He was glad to be part of Alex’s. “It’s not far. I will not say anything else about it before we get there, because I want you to take it in as you are meant to feel it. So many people make that mistake. I do not want to color your thoughts with my own. However it makes you feel, it is right. She guides us, Alex, and it is beautiful.”

Kai and Theo were an great team, the two of them had been together for twenty one years after all. Ever since Theo was around one and Kai was around two. They learned how to work together to cause trouble, but that bond never faltered. Kai watched as Theo slipped into the room and found the other stalker. Good. Kai ventured forward, looking around and he didn't see anything else. It wasn't a huge building so there wasn't much else to search. Once they finished looking, he let out a breath of relief. "Good job." Kai said with a grin.

Alex followed Ezekiel as they headed towards Martyrs Gate. He couldn't keep the excitement off his face or out of his footsteps. "Is that so? I haven't heard much about it, so I guess that's a good thing." He said happily as he nodded. "Thank you, for bringing me. It is beautiful how She guides us." Alex agreed, looking ahead for any sign of them getting close, not that he knew where it was.

Theo stood up with hands on his hips as he stood there triumphantly. “Heh, I knew we could do it. There’s nothing we can’t do when we are together.” He more than believed that. “Alright, fearless leader. Where to now? I think we got them all, like we always do. Where do you want to explore in this place?”

Ezekiel was excited on Alex’s behalf. He deserved this. He loved it for him. “It’s kind of hidden. We’re going to walk through this alley up here, and see that cement barrier? We’re going to jump over that, and then I want you to just explore. You’ll know when you find it.” He smiled. He could feel how powerful this area was. It was one of the most powerful places he had ever been.

Kai looked at Theo and chuckled, hearing him. "Of course. We're quite the dynamic duo." Kaiden agreed as he looked around. "Perhaps we move further in?" He suggested, looking around, and then he walked forward. He stepped through the far door and looked around. Ooh. He checked the desk inside and found some bullets. "Sweet. Theo, wanna split these?" He asked, holding half of the stash in one hand and the other had stuffed the rest in his pack.

Alex looked at Ezekiel and nodded, following him through the alley. He saw the cement barrier up ahead and walked over to it. "Okay." He said, feeling the powerful energy. He vaulted over the cement barrier and paused, looking around. He felt the energy getting stronger up ahead. Alex walked forward, and then he slipped past a gate and stopped. He could feel it, Her, and his smile grew. He took a few steps closer, looking at the truck covered in prayer papers, and the white flowers around. Alex breathed out slowly. "Wow.."

Theo was already nodding or possibly dancing as Kaiden suggested continuing through this building. If they already got rid of the stalkers, there was no reason not to. He was checking through a drawer as Kai found the bullets. “Bro, that’s good stuff.” He slipped beside him and slid the bullets into his own hand before stuffing them away. Then he glided back to where he left off, going through some of the other desks and drawers. “Sometimes, I wonder why people even had these things.” He lifted up one of those magazines with the provocative pictures of women. “Like I get that these are beautiful ladies, but why did they decide to make these in the first place? To look at beautiful people? Turn around doofuses. They’re all over.”

Ezekiel kept his distance now that they had arrived at the monument. It was really the most beautiful place – the most powerful place that he had ever been. It was true that this had not always been here. It was still relatively new in the eyes of many including himself, but that did not matter. Sometimes, that which is holy is found in unsuspecting times and unsuspecting places. He slowly followed as Alex made his way to the truck. “You may touch. Read. Explore. Open the truck.” Ezekiel knew that he promised not to impede with this, but he did not want Alex to miss a single part of it. It was too good not to experience it all.

Kaiden saw Theo nodding, and all but dancing and laughed. He handed the bullets to Theo before he watched his best friend slip off to where he had been before. Kai's eyes drew to look at Theo and the magazine before he shrugged. "I don't know, people back then were weird." He said shaking his head as he turned around to search further into the building. There wasn't much in the way of supplies that were worth it, but it was interesting to see the area.

Alex looked at the truck, mouth half open in awe as he felt Her around them. His gaze flicked over to Ezekiel when he heard his words and he turned back to the truck. Alex opened the truck's doors and his breath caught at all the prayers inside. He read a few, before one caught his eye. It wasn't like the other prayer notes and he took it into his hands and read it.

‘May She guide us to finding ways to get rid of the demons, and the wolves. Including the lost souls of Kai and T, friends to Ezekiel and Alex’
Alex stepped out of the truck and turned to Ezekiel. "Um. I think you should read this." He said, holding the paper out.

What Theo loved most about these kinds of places was that you could really learn about the people who were there before the outbreak. Things like that magazine told you that these were people who liked magazines like that. In that previous area, they learned about the people who also like magazine but liked science instead. It was just fascinating to see the stories of lives lost. “Come on man! There’s more to see! Probably.”

Ezekiel waited further back so that Alex could have the full experience without Ezekiel influencing it too much. He smiled as he watched his younger brother move through the truck. The prayer notes danced in the wind that sang Her praises. He narrowed his brows as Alex called for his attention. Read it? “Some are moving occasionally.” He stepped forward to read the note. He thought this was going to be like the rest, and Alex simply had not yet gotten used to the power of it. And then he read it. The power of that moment slipped away. “What is this?” he asked, a hardness rising inside him. He knew who it was from. They flat out said it on the paper. “They thought they could desecrate something sacred like this?” These wolves had such nerve.

Kaiden looked at Theo, hearing him and chuckled softly, following him. "More? It's not that big of a building. Perhaps we should move onto the next one?" He asked, watching him with a smile on his face. Kaiden looked around the room and sighed, his mind wandering back to the stadium but he knew this was the right thing to do. Something had to change and while he wasn't quite sure what, he knew something needed to.

Alex watched Ezekiel as he read the paper and heard his words. "Well.. maybe they were just trying to speak to us? Weren't we just thinking of maybe.. possibly communicating with them anyway?" Alex asked softly, slipping out of the truck. He agreed that they shouldn't have picked this place to do it though. He took the paper and slipped it in his pocket, knowing now it wasn't a prayer and didn't belong there. "Okay, change of subject. Could you.. maybe show me the sky bridge?"

Theo shrugged and skipped ahead. “More to see can be another building. This area is crazy! Can you hear the water?” He ran through rooms until he was back to one with a window that overlooked the rushing water. “That’s so cool.” He peered out, leaning just a little. “Mmkay so we can go back out that way, like we came in, and duck into that building. Or we can maybe move track through this one and find a way to jump to the next one over?” He grinned and looked at Kaiden. “We can always find some rickety old stairs.”

Despite Alex’s commendable job of attempting to lighten the mood by reminding him of conversations they recently had and also change the subject, Ezekiel was far too preoccupied being strangely furious. “How could they think this was a good idea? Communication or not, this is a sacred place. Do they wish to mock what it’s important to us?” He nearly growled the last words. “How would they feel if we killed their leader and then mocked their pain and their sorrow and their hope?” He turned and stomped away. “This was his idea. I can tell. He would be so brash.” Ezekiel could not even think about the sky bridge. All he could see was that wolf’s smug face thinking he could do whatever he wanted.
