Kaiden followed Theo, hearing him and shook his head in laughter at the skipping. “Okay, how about we not find stairs that can fall apart but perhaps there is a way to cross to another building.” He said, coming up to stand beside Theo. “And yes, I hear the running water.” He added as he turned to find a way through this building.

Alex sighed softly, hearing his words. “But how else would they know how to reach us? We don’t exactly have a way of talking to them.” Alex said. He turned and followed Ezekiel when he stomped off. “Who? Kaiden?” Alex asked, watching his older brother. “Look. I know it’s horrible what they did but this is supposed to be a day to show me our territory. Can we.. move on? And deal with them.. another day?”

Theo shook his head. “Don’t kill the vibe with your smart talk, Lachlan.” He nudged his best friend’s shoulder as he turned away from him. “We are on our second trip meant for doing something stupid like running away. This is us living our lives!” He jogged through the building to the other side in the hopes to find a window facing the other building. “Though, you’re not wrong. We probably shouldn’t be that kind of stupid or we might not have lives. We don’t have saviors here.” He paused and looked around. “They do just show up when we need them so maybe…?”

“Of course it was Kaiden.” Every ounce of venom that Ezekiel could muster, which was significantly more than he ever knew he was capable of having, slathered his words. He was blindly moving away from the truck and the prayer notes. With this one action, the whole place felt wrong now. He did not want to be there anymore. He was not able to consider how this made Alex feel. Not yet. He was so wrapped up in his anger to notice anything else. He hopped back over that barrier and moved quickly away. “Well, he seems to always be around, so I am sure that it would be easier to communicate simply by talking. I would love to talk if he wanted to show his face now.” He was so furious that his hand shook. He looked at Alex. “This is our territory. What gives them the right to come traipsing in like they own every place? Because they can have all of their forces with them wherever they go? Like royalty of the old world?” He sucked in a deep breath, eyes closing as he tried to calm himself. “Yes, this is not about him as much as he seems to think that it is. This is about you.” He opened his eyes and smiled, though it did not reach his eyes. “Skybridge? Of course. It’s beautiful, though nothing like this.”

Kaiden rolled his eyes with a snort of laughter. “I’ll try not to kill the vibe then.” He said as he followed Theo, albeit a little slower than his friend. “No. We are not going to make a mess. Or risk our lives. This running away was not intended to be risky, but to prove a point.” Kai said as he walked. “And I hope we don’t run into them.”

Alex’s eyes widened as he heard his brothers tone. The venom in his words was unnatural. Alex scurried after Ezekiel, vaulting the barrier and running after him. Alex heard his words and raised his eyebrows, seeing his hand shake. He placed a hand on Ezekiel’s shoulder with a soft sigh. “Okay. So we’re going to not think of them, and how they come into our territory.” He replied, and though he hated the wolves, fighting them and everything else, he still saw them as people. Maybe it was Alex who was weird, but he felt that this war between them was stupid. He saw the smile that did not reach his eyes and sighed once more, softer. “Lead the way to it. I can’t wait to see it.”

Theo paused as he reached a window and peered out. They could not get out that way, but there looked like a walkway around the building if they moved further down. He popped out of the room and down the hall. “I feel that we are doing an amazing job providing the point of we can’t be held back by rules made for eleven year olds.” He passed one room and then entered another. “Yeah! Hey, Kai, come look at this. We go through this window to pop onto this thing and maybe… down there we can hop over?”

It was so much worse now that he knew some of the wolves. Two in fact. They became people in his mind, as they already were, and now it was so much harder to think about them the same way that he thought about that horrid congregation. It made him angrier instead of how one might think that he would become more vulnerable to them. They were not suddenly friends as this note seemed to suggest. And what exactly did they mean? Was this meant to portray a certain message or were they just this stupid? He really did think he could do anything, this Kaiden. Once this what Ezekiel got for sparing his life? For helping him instead of senselessly slaughtering? It was infuriating. He tried to push that aside so that he could be there in the present with Alex. This mangy mutt did not get to ruin this day for his brother. “Do you know why we built the skybridge?” he asked as they traveled through their thankfully empty territory.

Kaiden followed Theo as he looked around. “I agree. We are definitely doing well to prove our point. We haven’t died or gotten bit.” Kaiden said with a grin as he made it to the window. “That looks sturdy enough. Better than those rickety old fire stairs.” He said, crawling through the window and tested it. “Come on!” Kai called, walking forward.

Alex didn’t know what to think anymore. After having met Theo and Kaiden, he was torn for the first time. Were their people justified in their pursuit of the wolves? Were the wolves really the enemy? His mind whirled as he thought. Alex blinked as he looked at Ezekiel. “Not really. I’m not entirely sure no.” He admitted as he looked at Ezekiel while they walked.

Theo watched Kai crawl out and then joined him as well. “You’re not wrong. I don’t at all feel like we are going to fall and die at any moment. That is certainly better than those stairs.” He walked forward, putting different pressure of footfalls down until he finally felt that they were safe enough. He moved alongside Kai until he finally decided to move around him to peer over the edge of the railing. “Do you think the water is what made it fall apart like this?” He shook his head in wonder.

A history lesson might distract him from his anger. “The biggest advantage that we have over the wolves is that they do not love the world around them as we do. We know that the world in its entirety is a sacred and beautiful place. They take it for granted. They are filled with fear when nature has overtaken what men made long ago.” He moved them swiftly through the buildings, now moderately wary of wolf presence since it was clear that they had been there. “You know what they never do?” He smiled at this next question. He all but jogged down the street.

Kaiden looked back at Theo and nodded as he also watched how the different pressures of footfalls worked on the thing. He did not want to fall off this one as well. Mostly because they were so close to sc- no Seraphite territory that he didn't want to draw attention to either of them. "It would make sense if the water did that. I was told that water is very powerful, and it could carve paths through stone if given time." Kaiden said, looking around at the edge of the railing.

Alex listened to Ezekiel, he knew that was what they were told, but there was an inkling of doubt forming that what if not all of them felt that way? What if some of them did love the world around them? Alex shook that little doubt away and focused. "What do they never do?" Alex asked as he followed just as swiftly through the buildings around them. He kept up with Ezekiel's jog as they headed down the street.

Water was cool. Everything was so cool out here. Why did they stay in the stadium so much? Why did they stay in walls like that? It could not be just because of the infected. They were so highly equipped and capable. If they wanted, they could wipe out the infected, and they kind of already did. There were stragglers, but he knew that it was nothing compared to how it was when they were kids. It was just the scars, right? And if they could all be like him and Kai, that would be fine maybe! Interesting thoughts. “Okay, I’m jumping. It’s not reckless. It’s practical. See…” Theo twisted around to point to one open area. “It’s like it was built for us to cross. Any one of us could totally do this. So he did. He ran and leapt, landing on the other side without effort. It did wobble a little. “This is fine! I am going to find a way in.” He disappeared around the side of the building.

Ezekiel just smiled as they moved. He needed them to be in the right spot. He paused and waited for Alex to be next to him before he pointed. “They never look up.” Following his finger upwards, high in the skyline, there it was. The sky bride. Granted, not everyone knew what they were looking for. “We repurposed what was already there. That is how you show love to your home.” Unlike what some others did with their home as it seemed. It was so hard to know what to believe with what they were told and what he now knew. Either way, it was true that those wolves like to stay on the ground.

The more of the outside world Kaiden saw, the more he hated how often they stayed in the stadium. This was so much cooler than being in that large wood and metal prison. They were all so capable, so good at killing infected, that he wished they would do this more often. He looked at Theo when he pointed to the open area. "Theo, be careful." Kaiden warned as he watched him run and leap, he made it though it wobbled a little. He watched him disappear around the side of the building. "Theo?" Kai called, unsure if he should jump over. That wobble did make him second guess the integrity of the building.

Alex noticed Ezekiel paused as Alex stepped up beside him. He followed his brother's finger and looked up. Oh. Wow. Alex's eyes widened in awe as he looked at it. "It's so cool." Alex admitted, unable to pull his eyes away from it. Eventually he did and looked at Ezekiel. "So how do we get up to it?" He asked.

This was not exactly him being careful, but it was him being reasonable in that he was risking himself in testing this and not asking Kai to join him yet. Which was a smart idea. He came bolting back around the building and leapt off and onto a lower ledge of the building that Kai was still on. As he did so, the entire wobbly edge of the other building started to do more than just wobble. It didn’t fall off, but it looked like it might. “So, after scouting like a reasonable person, I have determined that the building over there seems a bit dangerous.”

“In the old world, there were these tall, huge machines. I believe they were how we built these buildings.” As he explained this, he began walking again. “When the demons plagued us, things like those giant machines were abandoned. I suspect that after the buildings lost their integrity, one of them fell.” He led Alex through the streets, knowing exactly how to get there. He had used the bridge numerous times. “To get there, we must climb up.”

Kaiden watched as Theo came bolting back around the building, and leaping off onto the lower ledge of the building. "Oh good. I'm glad you, as a reasonable person, was able to deduce that the building is a bit dangerous." He snorted as he turned around to meet Theo outside the building. He headed down the stairs and out the door, stepping out on the ledge, watching the water rushing by.

Alex listened to Ezekiel as they walked through the streets. "Really?" He asked, his voice holding that note of curiosity in it. He'd never thought about it before but as he looked up at the bridge, it made sense to use them and make them into a bridge. Alex could hear the roaring water nearby as they drew closer to the flooded section of the city. It was the easiest way to climb up to the bridge. He narrowed his eyes ahead of him and wondered if his eyes were playing tricks on him or if he saw someone up ahead.

“Yep, all in a day’s work of being a reasonable adult who does things not at all recklessly and in order to safety procure information for the welfare of fellow… um… fellow?” Theo groaned as he ran out of words to say that might sound more professional than his usual vernacular. “Yeah, bro, it’s dangerous when it wobbles like that.” He finally joined Kaiden outside the building and by the water. “But thankfully there’s a bunch of other places we can go. Like… over here!” He yet again ran and leapt across to one of those floating island of road where the water rushed by him.

Ezekiel nodded. “We found ways up through tall buildings like these and created subtle paths for us to follow to get to the bridge. It is paths like these that allow us to travel across the mainland so quickly unlike our enemies.” He paused there as he considered that word. Enemy. He led them closer to the water. He noticed Alex’s expression, and as he was going to ask what he saw, he turned his attention in the same direction. In the distance he could make out a moving shape. A shape that seemed to be quickly moving. Landing. He stopped suddenly. “Who else is here?”

Kaiden rolled his eyes as he heard him, a soft chuckle echoing out of him as he did. He looked at the rushing water and then to Theo, hearing him and watching him run and leap across to one of the floating islands. "You know, I was being serious about not saving you if you end up falling into the water!" Kai hollered as he ran and leapt onto the same piece, smirking at his brother. Then his eyes caught on two shapes. "Theo.. we aren't alone."

Alex nodded as he listened to him, thinking about the fact that they found ways to get up there without being caught by their enemies.. the wolves. "Right." He agreed before he heard Ezekiel and shook his head. "I'm not sure, should we investigate?" Alex asked, his hand reaching for his bow automatically. He didn't quite have the speed at drawing his bow at enemies quite yet.

“And I’m serious that I would never actually fall!” Theo called prior to when he knew that there were people around. He landed on the other side, having the absolute time of his life. If this could be their lives, he would be so much happier for the rest of his days. He spun the way Kai was facing to see if he too could see whoever might be out there. But when he looked, he didn’t see anyone. He quickly scanned around them for the best path away if needed. “Who do you think is out there?” he asked much quieter.

Ezekiel grabbed Alex’s arm and darted silently and swiftly away from view. He did not know who was out there, and he had this sinking feeling in his gut that they were not fellow Seraphites. He did not want to whistle in case they were wolves and therefore knew about their presence. If they were not Seraphites they had to be wolves. As they moved, Ezekiel listened. They were loud whoever was out there. Loud with familiar voices. “No…” This was starting to get ridiculous if they were who he suddenly thought they might be. “Do they sound familiar to you as well, brother?”

Kaiden looked back again and the shapes were gone. “Not any of our people.” He said softly. “Is there enough room over there for me and is there cover?” Kaiden asked, suddenly feeling very unsure and nervous in the open air. If it was Seraphites, this wasn’t going to end well. His sharp brown eyes looked around, and he reached for his pistol.

Alex felt the grab to his arm and followed him out of view. Alex listened to the people, knowing they weren’t Seraphites. Wait. He listened closer. “Yes. They sound very familiar brother.” Alex agreed, and then sighed heavily. “Should we.. leave or go towards them?” Personally Alex didn’t mind them, and he wasn’t sure if it was because he was younger and hadn’t really battled the wolves or if he was just not.. a true Seraphite. But that division in his mind, he pushed away because he didn’t want do deal with that right now.

They needed that escape plan quickly. This was what they got for being out of their own territory. This was also what they were trying to prove. That they could handle themselves. “We jump all the way across and then snake around the front of that building and tuck in between those at least for now. Then we figure out where to go.” That was the best thing he could find in that moment. Without another second wasted, he was running and jumping to do just that.

These wolves really had some nerve to be exactly where they were going to be. Again. And if they were the two wolves that they had the ill fated luck to see once again, then Ezekiel certainly could not leave like this. Perhaps if they were others. Yes, he probably would have. He would have promised to come back another day with Alex. Not today. “I think I would like to communicate,” he hissed and was running through the shadows to get closer without being seen. Not until he knew for sure.

Kaiden listened to Theo’s plan and while it wasn’t the greatest, it was better than nothing, and much better than sitting in the open. He ran and jumped after Theo, following him to the building so they could snake around it. He kept on Theo’s tail, watching for signs of whoever was around them.

Alex heard the hissed words and nodded. “Okay. After you.” He said, ducking and following Ezekiel through the shadows. Personally, this was just as much of an adventure as anything else Alex could think of so he was quite content to tag along.

Theo landed without issue on the other side and shimmied his way around the edge until he found more solid footing and ducked between the buildings. From there, they were not looking at a lot of choices. The buildings in this are had a lot more damage than some of the other areas, so there was not a lot of places for them to go. He frowned and moved back further between the two so that they could keep to the shadows as they watched.

Ezekiel leapt over water, bouncing from one small chunk of old road to the next without batting an eye. This was easy for him. They had been doing this kind of thing since he was young. He darted into one building, knowing these places well, and came out on the other side and thus avoiding much of the obstacles in their way. He paused as he searched for them again. Somewhere there would be a sign of their movements.

Kaiden landed after Theo, following him around the edge of the building and then through them. He ducked between the buildings and then noticed there weren't a lot of places they could go. He placed a hand on Theo's shoulder. "Maybe we should try and circle around them? Or go back and find a better way?" Kai asked as he looked back behind them.

Alex watched as Ezekiel leapt over the water, biting his lip as he looked around. The rushing water made him nervous, but Alex wasn't a big fan of water anyway. He never had been. While he stood near the start, he watched as Ezekiel went further ahead. Okay Alex, you've got this. Come on buddy. He steeled himself and leapt onto the first chunk of road, and gathered himself. Then he did it again, but he undershot the distance and his foot hit the road, and he slipped, with a loud yell of surprise, he slipped into the river. The cold water covered him and he tumbled over himself before his head broke the water and he was tossed and turned before slamming against a piece of road, trying to hold onto it. "Help!"

Kaiden heard the yell, the cry for help and looked at Theo. "Come on!" He said, turning and running back the way they came and as he came to the river, he saw him. Alex was struggling to hold onto a piece of road. His hands grabbing for purchase as the water kept crashing over him. Every so often his head would go under the water and he'd breach it a moment later. Kaiden didn't think, and started leaping across the pieces, heading right for Alex.

Ezekiel had not noticed Alex’s hesitation. He was too engrossed in his own mission. Own vendetta almost. He was so angry again about them leaving the note not only in the Seraphite territory but where prayers went. Prayers to the Prophet. How dare they? It was not until he made his way almost to where he thought they might have disappeared that he heard Alex’s yell. His head snapped to the side, but he couldn’t see. Ignoring shadows and stealth now, he leapt into the open for a better view. Alex had fallen into the water, barely holding on. He was so far back. He started running that way. Someone was going to beat him. There was no doubt anymore. That was Kaiden. Another person was quickly running after him. Theophilus. He should have been pleased with this revelation, both in that his assumptions were correct and he could trust them to save his brother. Trust. Theo ran past where it seemed logical to stop to grab onto Alex, and Ezekiel did not understand what he was doing. Not until Theo leapt across to another piece of road and knelt down, leaning out like he was ready to catch him. Oh, in case Kaiden could not get Alex out. “We’ve got you!” Theo called over the roaring of the rapids. Ezekiel did not know how to feel about what was happening, but he knew that he would not be able to get there before Alex was either pulled out or forced to let go.

Alex was terrified, his fingers were scraped up from trying to hold onto the ledge, his back hurt from slamming into the concrete. He was tired, running out of energy as he tried to get up. His head looked over and saw Kaiden and Theo headed his way. Ezekiel was so far ahead, and he looked up as Kaiden landed on the piece of road he was holding onto. "Hey, we've got you." Kai said as he knelt down, grabbing onto Alex's hands. "I know you're tired, and sore." Kaiden added as he pulled. He could Alex halfway out and then another wave crashed onto his legs. Kai slipped and lost his grip. "Kai!" Alex yelled, the mixture of blood and water on his hands wasn't helping him grip him. He slipped back into the water, and was headed right for Theo. Kaiden quickly followed him after he gained his footing and leapt onto the same ledge with Theo. "Grab his hands, I'll grab his legs. We should be able to pull him out that way." Kai said, reaching down to snag Alex, who hit the ledge a moment later. Alex reached for Theo, as Kai grabbed his legs so they could pull him out.

They had all been through a lot. Each of them had their run in with infected or demons and scars or wolves alike. Each of them had braved perilous times. Occasionally, they had to deal with their people in danger, but this was a different kind of danger. This was not infected or demons coming right at them. This was the danger holding onto Alex without reproach. Ezekiel watched his group die, and he was close to all of them. They were like his family. Not like Alex though. He adored the way Alex was so curious. The natural talent and intrigue. He was such a nice, fresh perspective on the world. He agreed with some of the more… controversial opinions that Ezekiel had. Seeing him in the water like that was horrifying. He kept running, though he was not sure he could make it. As Alex slipped from Kai’s hands, Alex’s name ripped from Ezekiel’s mouth without him giving it permission. He swore that if Alex did not make it, he would be doing more than having a conversation with that mutt. Theo was ready, and as Alex came rushing through the water, he was already touching it so that his hands could block the way. He swiped at Alex’s hands, holding on as tight as he could as Kai took his legs. “Got them! See, we’ve got you. Let’s pull him out.” He hefted Alex up as Kai did as well, pulling Alex into himself so that he did not crash onto the slippery edge. Ezekiel could not even breathe. He leapt across one land piece to the other without thought until he was on the same as everyone else. He was on the ground shoving his way to Alex without care of anything else. “Alex, are you okay?”

Kaiden wasn't thinking about anything other than helping Alex out of the water. He'd do the same thing for Theo and.. as he helped pull Alex out, he realized that he would do it for Ezekiel, because it was the right thing to do. In the end, they were all people, no matter where they came from. He looked at Alex who rolled into Theo when they hefted him up and onto the rock. Alex was panting, coughing and sputtering as he laid on the rock, his eyes drew up when he heard Ezekiel's voice. "I- I'm fine.." Alex said, though the cuts and scrapes on his fingers, legs, arms and chest said otherwise. As he went to sit up, Alex cried out in pain and he twisted to locate the source which just hurt more. "Alex. Stop moving.." Kaiden said, kneeling down behind the younger Seraphite. He pushed up his shirt and grimaced. Down his back were two deep cuts and multiple forming bruises from hitting the concrete. "Theo. Grab my pack." Kaiden said, then looked at Ezekiel. "Right now, he's all that matters. I need the shirt off."

Ezekiel’s fear was so strong that he was not really able to contain any of himself. His rage. His worry. The moment Alex sounded like he was in pain, Ezekiel gave that blame to Kaiden and Theo. “Don’t touch him,” he snapped, but even he knew that he was wrong as soon as they were able to move the shirt out of the way. Theo was already moving to grab their first aid kits before Kai finished. Ezekiel did not like this. There were too many questions. Too many variables that he could not guarantee. Were they really going to help his brother? He looked at Kaiden, really looked at him, and hissed out a breath as he nodded. Fine, he could help. He pushed Kaiden out of the way, not necessarily aggressively but not gently either as he moved over Alex. “Take deep breaths.” He removed the bow first and tossed it to the side. He slipped off the arrows, did the same, and grimaced. This was not good. He was not going to be able to do this as painlessly as he would like on his own. Did he trust Kaiden? He had to for Alex. “Alex, I am going to move your arms so that Kaiden can take off your shirt. It will hurt, and I am sorry.” He gently moved Alex’s arms to make taking the shirt off easier, readjusting Alex so that he was resting on him since Theo had to move for the first aid. Theo was ready to begin on his back as soon as they got the shirt out of the way.

Kaiden heard that snap but ignored it, tensions were running high and so were emotions. He could only imagine how he'd be if Theo was hurt like this and their roles were reversed. He saw Theo moving as he saw Ezekiel looking at him, and heard that hissed out breath. He shifted the moment he was pushed out of the way, gentle or not, he understood. Alex heard Ezekiel and nodded, trying to take deeper breaths then the shallow and quick ones he was currently taking. He heard Ezekiel and nodded, though he bit his lip and cried out softly as his arms were moved, and then Kaiden slipped his shirt off and looked at Theo, nodding for him to go ahead.
