Kaiden never did quite understand how he got his father’s temper but it was a tool he tried to avoid. But that sentence made him so mad. Hate and anger coursed through his veins. And he was about to say something back when he felt that arm hit his scar. Yes, it had happened six years ago but the tissue was still sensitive. He cursed under his breath at the feeling, hissing out in discomfort. “Leave. Them. Alone.” Kai snapped, staggering to his feet and arm wrapped around his side and stomach, covering the scar. “This doesn’t involve them.”

Alex’s head turned to look at Ezekiel, confusion on his face. They were just talking. Theo was actually really nice, and he suspected that Kai was too. “Ezekiel?” He asked, confusion in his tone as he slowly tried to get to his feet, but he collapsed a moment later, his back twinging in pain.

It was like all facets of reason were gone. Every path to something logical burned from his hate, and he was running on undeveloped synapses like those of a teenager still growing. His attention easily moved back to Kaiden, because that was where it really was anyway. “I believe it does. If you insult one of us, you insult us all.” Those scars were on everyone’s faces not just his. His eyes flicked to how Kaiden held himself, and there was a hint of satisfaction in it. It was not the pain that he thought about but the fact that Kaiden had to make the connection that Ezekiel wanted to show. He was formulating a way to satisfactorily convey this when he looked back at Alex, drawn to his questioning tone. He did not like the misery that this caused him, and he would apologize later once they were free of the burden of being near them. He looked back just in time for him to fall. His eyes widened, and the fear from before shoved its way back to forefront once more. “Alex!” he cried as he rushed forward, already on his way to crouching down when he was stopped.

Theo’s hand was up, palm out to tell, not ask, Ezekiel to not continue any further. “Why don’t you back up?” Ezekiel’s eyes flashed and his mouth began to move, but Theo stopped him there too. “No. He’s hurt, and you’re the kind of reckless right now that is going to hurt him more. He needs to rest, and don’t you dare argue with me. I have nothing against you. I meant that we could be friends. But right now, you’re too out of your mind to be helpful. Let me help him.”

Kaiden clenched his teeth, his arm tucked to his side as he sucked in a breath. He blinked, hearing those words and flicked his gaze down to Alex. In all honesty, deep down, Kai didn’t think the scars were the worst. But he also knew that he could use it as an insult if he chose to. Though he held his tongue when he heard Alex hit the ground and Theo’s words of warning. “Let him help. He’s good at that.” Kai said roughly, pushing himself in between and creating a barrier. “Alex will not be able to make it home right now. And we need to get somewhere safer. Can we hold a semblance of truce for now? Find somewhere to hole up that isn’t in the middle of a river?”

Alex flicked his gaze up when he heard Ezekiel but the pain radiated through his entire body. He looked at Theo this time and heard Kaiden’s words. “That’s a good i- idea.” He said, his teeth clenched in pain. But how would they get off this? He couldn’t exactly jump right now.

Ezekiel did not like this. He did not like it at all. He did not know what it was that he did like or dislike, because everything was far beyond confusing right now, but he knew that this plan was not his favorite. He did not like the way Kai talked to him and the way his attitude exuded better than everyone else. He didn’t like how Theo thought he could make decisions about Alex. He scowled, arms crossed, and flippantly asked, “why is it every time I see you, you bring trouble?” His gaze was unmistakably towards Kai. Theo, who was trying to ease Alex into a better position, tried to interrupt the next fight. “Zeke. Can I call you Zeke?” “No-“ “Zeke. Do it for Alex. He needs you to be there for him. Don’t do it for us. Do it for him.” Ezekiel continued to fume but finally groaned and nodded. He took a step back. “Fine. Find somewhere safe for him.” Theo nodded and slowly turned his attention back to Alex. “Okay, buddy. Standing is hard. Try it again with my help?”

Kai looked at Ezekiel for a moment, hearing him. And for the first time he snorted a laugh. “Because I’m a troublemaker apparently.” He said with a shrug. His anger was tempered at the moment. But he wasn’t going to let him do anything to Theo. He heard Theo’s words and then after a long moment, he caught the groan and Ezekiel backed up a step. Kaiden nodded and moved to the edge of the road. “That office building beside us looks sturdy, though I’m not sure how we can get him over the river to it.” Kai said, looking at the building that had lost half its first floor from the erosion. Alex looked at Theo and nodded. “Okay.” He said, holding a hand out for Theo, and he’d climb to his feet with the wolf’s help.

The laugh almost made Ezekiel laugh as well. Not because he thought it was funny but because it was such an obvious answer. They had been talking about him being a troublemaker already. He looked at the office building with consideration. It did look like a good place for them to be. As Theo helped him up, he considered their options. There weren’t many. “We need to make a bridge. We can’t get him across the water without hurting him more or one of us.” He was already moving away from the rest. “Something that would allow us to walk without jumping.” He leapt across the raging river and contemplated before looking back. He didn’t trust them with Alex. Theo saw that look and frowned. “Kai. Go help him? I’ll stay with Alex.” When Ezekiel made a face, he added, “you don’t have to be partners in crime. You just need to find me something we can walk over and you’ll go faster with two of you. Plus, if you run into trouble, you’ll need help.”

Kaiden watched carefully as Ezekiel looked at the office building and then heard his words. Right. A bridge otherwise they’d hurt one or more of them worse. He saw him leap across the river and Kai hesitated as he looked back at Theo and Alex. The youngest one was leaning rather heavily on Theo, his legs and arms hurt but not like his back. He heard his brothers words and looked back over the river and saw that face. This was the last thing he wanted to do. Right. “Okay. I guess that makes sense.” He said, running and leaping over the water to land beside Ezekiel. “Let’s get searching.” He said, his voice curt as he quietly headed into the office building.

Alex watched them go and looked at Theo. “Do you think they can accomplish the task of finding something to use as a bridge?” He asked, looking back over to Kai’s disappearing form into the building.

Ezekiel did not want to leave Alex. He really disliked the idea of not being with him, especially when he was like this. But if he stayed there, they would be stuck. He could not move Alex well on his own, and he would not trust the wolves to get things for them. He could not abandon Alex and hope that he was okay. Despite it all, Theo staying with him was better than any alternatives. He disliked this, but it was okay. At least that was. Hearing Theo send Kaiden made his blood boil all over again. He did not want to have to be stuck with that man any longer than he already was. He did not respond as he entered the building on his own. He would search for something, but that did not mean he would speak to this ungrateful brat. As he moved, all he could see were the memories of their encounters. It was like how it was after their first meeting. Plagued by thoughts. Each one made him seethe.

Theo watched them retreat, and as soon as they were gone, he let out a long breath. “Can they find something? Sure. They’re both capable. Are they going to use it to kill each other first? That seems likely.” He stood there a moment, a firm grip around Alex. “sorry for making you stand up for nothing. Do you want to sit while we wait?”

Kai did not like this anymore than Ezekiel did. He hated that this man plagued his thoughts, and he could feel his anger and hate simmering below the surface. One wrong word, move, or look could bring it all rushing back like the river they were trying to get away from. He walked down the main hallway, silent. His head was tilted slightly to the side, listening. His footsteps were silent, and he had a hand on his knife for one reason. This building was unexplored, and anything could be hiding around the walls or in rooms. He walked inside the first room he saw and looked around. No bridge material, but bullets and a rag. He pulled his pack off to see what he had inside when his heart clenched painfully and a gasp ripped from his mouth. Nope. He swung his pack back on and turned to exit the room with a shake of his head. Nothing in there. Onto the next room.

Alex sighed. “I was afraid you’d say that.” He said softly before he thought for a moment. “Yeah, let’s sit down. My legs and arms are sore too.” He admitted.

The anger that plagued him was enough to cloud his judgment. He should have been moving quieter, and he was quiet but not like he would normally. The sounds of his own footfalls or him pushing past something made him jumpy. Then, when he realized that it was his own self causing the sounds, he would get angrier. He pulled out his hammer, ready for anything that came by. One room held nothing of use. In theory, he could break apart some of these desks, but he was afraid that they would take a long time, would be too fragile, and would be too noisy. They needed some sort of ladder or plank. He walked through another room and then another. The more he came up negative, the quicker and less careful he became. All the while, as he searched, his mind was drawn back to the argument they just had. Or the argument they had the other day. Kaiden’s expressions weighed on his mind and his words on his conscience.

“Okay, so let’s sit back down the same way we came back up.” Theo helped him slowly lower down as painlessly as they could manage. “I don’t think there’s a whole lot more I can do patching it up though. Uncle Jay, or well I guess Kai’s uncle rather, could do a much better job. But he’s not here, and we’re… we’re…” He let that fall away as he really for the first time thought about how they were on their own in this. “But if they can get us that bridge and we can get you out of death zone, then hopefully we can get you somewhere better to rest.”

Kaiden normally worked well as he searched an area. He was quiet, communicative when he had to and worked with whomever he was with. This? This was more like working on his own than with anyone. He grew quickly attuned to Ezekiel and his motions. It was that adaptability that made him excel in patrolling. Kaiden found some stairs and made his way up them, coming out onto the second floor. Oh! Was that? He moved closer but before he could investigate what looked like a ladder, he heard a screech, two, and a click. Oh no. His blood ran cold as he whipped around, knife in hand as two runners came running and a clicker was right behind them. He ducked as one runner swiped at his head and his hand shot out to grab them and stab the knife into their neck.

Alex nodded, looking at Theo. “Okay.” He said as he slowly moved to sit down with a rough sigh. He listened to Theo and even though he should hate this man, this wolf, he didn’t. He found a smile grace his features as he nodded. “You did a good job given the circumstances.” He said sincerely. “Yes, I’d much rather not still be where I could’ve almost died.”

Those who are below you. What exactly was that insinuating? That Ezekiel felt that he was better than the rest of them? Of course, he did not, though if he had to compare himself to a man who acted like a spoiled child, running away constantly and dragging trouble with him everywhere he went, then maybe he was better. He should have felt bad about the jab at Kaiden’s scar, and he did. He did which made him angrier. How could he feel bad for being that person when he was surrounded by- A screech. Demons. He closed his eyes for a quick prayer to Her before slipping out of the room and following the sounds. Upstairs? Yes. He ran up them two at a time, hammer brandished in his hand. At the top, the first thing he saw was Kaiden with his hands full of demon. With a growl of frustration, he slipped by the wolf and slammed his hammer into the head of the second quick-moving demon. “Troublemaker or trouble magnet?” Ezekiel asked as the demon crumpled in front of him. This was already going much better than the other combat they had the unfortunate luck to do together. He eyed the demon with the split face and the lack of space to move around and grab it. No worries. He pulled his arm back and threw the hammer straight into the last’s head as well, which did not immediately kill it, but did make it stagger back, clearly very hurt.

Theo positioned himself however it seemed that Alex naturally sat with his injuries. The least he could do for not getting to him earlier was to be his support however he needed. “Kai says I do a good job helping, but I really do like a mediocre job. A good enough job. I probably should pay more attention to when they’re trying to teach me how to do things, but I get so restless, you know?” As proof, his legs wiggled as they sat there. “And I know Zeke,” he giggled at this name that Ezekiel could not stop him from saying, “would want to help you himself, but you guys don’t carry around packs like we do, so I assume you don’t have things like med kits on you.”

Kaiden heard the growl form Ezekiel and then his question. A snort slipped out of him as he dropped the first infected. “Eh. Depends on the hour.” He said, as he watched him throw his hammer at the clicker. Right. Kai saw it didn’t kill it right away, and that gave him the chance to slip into another room and that led through to get behind the clicker. He grabbed its neck with his arm, stabbed it and as it dropped, pulled the hammer out of its head. He walked over and handed it back. “I found a ladder for us.” He said, walking over towards it.

Alex nodded. “I understand. My youngest brother was like that. But he wandered off the island.. because he was restless and ended up.. killed by your people.” He said. Alex didn’t talk about David often, if at all but he still remembered his parents finding his body. “And you’re right. We don’t have medical stuff on us at all so I still thank you for helping me.”

Ezekiel rolled his eyes at that answer. He was amused. He would never admit that, and he would deny it if anyone asked. He watched as Kaiden disappeared to finish off the last demon. Impressive. Quick and efficient if not also annoying. He waited where he stood until the hammer made it back to him. He probably should have thanked him. He did not. Instead his gaze followed to the ladder. “So you did. That will require Alex to be stable on his feet, something I am not sure he can do.” He fasted the hammer back in place. “Do you think we can get him across safely?” He was wary about this, but he also knew that they did not have a whole lot of other choices.

That was not at all where Theo thought this conversation was going. Youngest brother. As in younger than Alex. And who knew when that happened. “No, I’m so sorry. That’s not right.” He looked away shaking his head. “See, this is why I think we’ve got it all wrong. I mean, yeah, your people are aggressive and string up our people to gut them, but that’s not all of you. That’s not you. Why do we assume that everyone is like that? Why do we just kill a little kid first without asking questions?” He never really thought about how bad that made them look. How bad that really made them. Who was the bad guy in this situation? “That wasn’t me. I wouldn’t have killed him. Promise.” He really wanted Alex to believe him.

Kaiden looked at him and didn't much care that Ezekiel had not said thank you. He wasn't expecting it anyway. Kaiden looked at the ladder as he walked up to it and then towards Ezekiel. "Yes. We'll get him across safely. Theo is a very capable man and even with his energy, I know that he can get your friend across." Kaiden said, bending down and grabbing the ladder. "I can't walk the stairs with this, do you mind heading to the bottom and I can pass it down to you?"

Alex bit his lip, he had been all of eleven years old when his younger brother, at eight had been found. "It.. was probably the worst day of my life, and I agree. I don't know why they'd kill a kid, and for a few years, that was all I could see. His death. But I sense that you are right, you are not like the others. But it's hard for us to accept that when we've lost so many to your people. Though, I know our own aren't much better." He replied, before he reached a hand and patted Theo's knee. "I know you wouldn't have. You don't seem like the type."

Promises from the guy he was just arguing with and looked like he might try to punch him did not make him feel much better. Was there anything else that he could do, though? No. “He better,” Ezekiel warned after a moment and then walked to the stairs. He again was putting his trust in this man. This just kept happening to them. “Send it down and I can walk it down. We can walk into the room across from the stairs to get it all the way down. Pivot from there.” He moved about halfway down the stairs and turned so that he could move wherever he needed to go.

It meant a lot that Alex believed Theo. It really felt like he was making a difference that way. He knew that it was silly to think about it. He should be making some difference for his own people, but frankly, none of them ever listened to him. They treated him like a kid, same as Kai. It wasn’t just Kai’s parents either. Everyone else was always waiting for them to mess up. He hated that. At least Alex believed in them. It was crazy that he had to go find a sca- Seraphite in order to have that. “Of course it’s hard. Most of my own patrol would shoot you right now even though you’re talking to me. To be fair, I’ve met a lot of Seraphites, and I bet they would kill me right now too. But you guys didn’t do that. And we didn’t do that. That’s why we wrote that note.” He paused and smiled sheepishly. “I really am sorry about it being in, um, poor taste. We didn’t know where else to go… And we thought that if anyone could start the dialogue, it was us! Because Kai and Ezekiel have already met and not killed each other, surprisingly, a whole number of times! I don’t want to do that anymore, you know. I think that’s another reason we ran? Because they want us to be these carbon copy Washington Liberation Front soldiers, and we don’t want to be that. We are more than that. Like you’re more than only a warrior.”

Kaiden looked at him for a moment, and heard that warning. He didn't want to know what would happen if Alex didn't make it now. He nodded and tipped the ladder down the stairs, and slowly started sending it down the stairs. "It's headed towards you." Kai said, slowly sending the ladder towards Ezekiel. "Let me know where you need me to go from here." He added, trying to keep this cordial moment just a little longer.

Alex nodded as he listened to Theo. Both a patrol of their own people and his would not allow this to happen. "Yes, putting the note there was not the smartest idea, but it certainly caught our attention. And I understand that. When we're going through training, they aim to mold us into the perfect Seraphite warrior." Alex admitted as he thought about his training. "But you're right. Physically I'm just like the others, but I feel like there is more to this world but it's hard to overcome the training."

Ezekiel clasped the metal, cold biting into his hands as he moved down the stairs slowly. He could not afford anything to go wrong. He reached the bottom and considered how this would best work. “The ladder is too tall for the ceilings.” His words were not necessarily him telling Kaiden, though he said them loud enough for him to hear as well. He was trying to think this through. “Can you guide your end around this corner if I guide it into the other room? We may have to um…” the fact that he could not think of a word frustrated him. He moved his hands up and down and in a circle as he tried to think. His mind was too clouded to think well.

“I think you are doing a fabulous job being Alex and not just a Seraphite.” Theo grinned as he sat there with his new friend. “And you have cool clothes. Ooh, speaking of, are you okay? Your clothes were soaking. I wish we could have wrung them out for you. You must be freezing still! Maybe we can once we get you out of this spot.”

Kaiden heard Ezekiel's words, though he kept silent, that was the truth. He listened to his next words and hummed softy, seeing him move his hands up and down and in a circle. "Pivot it?" He asked cautiously. "And yes, I can guide it around the corner while you guide it into the other room." Kaiden added as he stepped down, the cold metal sinking into his hands, still cold from pulling Alex out of the water. They'd been dried, but the cold was still in his skin.

Alex smiled at Theo, hearing him. "Thank you. I needed to hear that." He admitted and when he heard Theo mention that his clothes were still wet, the chill that ran through him made his teeth chatter slightly. Ezekiel's jacket helped but his legs were shivering now. "I'm cold, maybe.. we can find a way to dry them but there is nothing around to make a fire."

Pivot. He raised a brow and shrugged. “Pivot. Juggle. Whatever gets it out.” All that mattered was getting this to Alex. If there was anything closer and easier, they would have found it already, so this was the answer. Ezekiel walked into the room behind him, matching the speed Kaiden took down the stairs. The room looked like a disaster honestly. Stepping around debris and broken things was difficult. It slowed him as he moved. In order to get the ladder far enough down, he had to move out of the way of something on the ground but jabbed his arm into a jagged end of something metal that had broken. He hissed as the pain shot through him, almost dropping the ladder. He caught it with his other hand as his hurt arm throbbed. He could not see well in the room. He had to hope it was fine. “Can you see where you need to go to move it around?” he asked, a hint of that displeasure seeping into his words.

“Oh shoot!” Theo grabbed his pack and pulled it in front of him. “I forgot that we packed for not being at home anymore, so I actually have some things. I am so sorry, Alex. I am not used to carrying some of these things around.” He unzipped it and pulled out a blanket. “This should help too. I’ve got some extra clothes too, so when we aren’t right here where we can die if anyone unsavory comes along, and also it will be easier to help, you can change into those too.” He paused a moment. “I mean, I know you don’t really wear things like we do… You can still wear them until your clothes dry?”

Kaiden kept up the speed though as he kept going, he heard a hiss from Ezekiel and frowned, also noticing the ladder almost dropped, a shift in how it was held. "I can. Are you alright?" He asked, knowing that Alex wouldn't be very happy if he got injured either. He certainly didn't care.. Kai stepped off the stairs and twisted the ladder around so they could move down the hall and towards the river.

Alex tilted his head as he saw Theo grab his pack and pulled it in front of him. "Well that's okay." He said, seeing Theo pull out a blanket. His eyes lit up as he took the blanket and placed it over his legs. It definitely helped, though he was still chilled. "I'll wear what I have to in order to avoid getting sick from being so cold thanks to wet clothes." Alex said, nodding. "I wonder if they found anything?"

Ezekiel moved the ladder as he felt Kaiden twisting it around. He tried to keep it as stable as possible as he held it with the opposite hand to what really would have been better. He did not even look at his arm as he sucked in a deep breath and then readjusted to hold the ladder with both hands. Thankfully it was not heavy. “I am fine.” His words left no room for discussion. He walked around the mess until he and the ladder were out of the room and following. He still could not see his am as he was not looking. Out of the shadows though, Kai most certainly could if he were to look. A large gash in his forearm had quite a bit of blood oozing down.

Theo smiled wide as it seemed to help Alex. That was all he wanted. He wanted them to be friends and help each other out. He would try to get him out of the wet clothes now if he was not afraid of what would happen if he did something poorly while they were so exposed. He wanted the comfort of shelter as well as having extra hands. The more people helping, the better they could make this go. “I’m sure they have. If yours is anything like mine, then they should be on their way with something perfect soon.”

Kaiden heard the words and there was no room for discussion, though he would be watching the other man. He seemed to be one who not think about his own wounds when there were things to be done. Once they got out of the shadows, he looked up ahead and saw the blood oozing down on his arm. "Ezekiel.." Kai groaned, rolling his eyes. Of course. As they made it down the hall and to the center of the demolished part of the building, he looked ahead to see Alex and Theo sitting there on the piece of road. "Theo!" He called. "Get ready to set this down." He said as they moved the ladder closer, ready to lay it down over the water.

Alex saw that wide smile and hummed softly. "I'm sure they will." He agreed, as his fingers played with the blanket over his legs. He looked up at the sound of Kaiden's voice and then looked back at Theo. "You were right." He said with a big grin on his face.

At the groan, he finally looked down at his own arm. That was fine. He had worse. “Kaiden,” he paralleled as though he did not know what that groan was about. Ezekiel found no reason to do anything about this right now. It was not an injury that needed immediate assistance. This was not like Alex’s. He would be fine. Theo shot up as he heard Kai’s voice and whooped in excitement. “What I tell you? We’ve got the best partners in crime ever! It counts as crime if you’re illegally cavorting with.. what was it? The cur?” He shrugged. “I like dogs.” He moved so that he was nearer the edge where they were coming so that he could reach for the ladder and pull it across and set it down nicely.

Kaiden huffed, hearing his name paralleled before he looked up hearing Theo's whoop of excitement. He took the ladder from Ezekiel then and set it on one end, gently guiding it forward so that Theo could reach for it and set it down nicely. "Do you need help getting him across?" Kaiden asked as Alex watched the two of them. He snorted a laugh at the comment and heard him. "The best criminal partners ever." Alex agreed as he watched them set the ladder down. He waited for Theo to help him stand up again.
