Alex and Kaleb handed their spoons off as Alex got to his feet. Kaleb braced himself against the wall and pushed himself up to his feet. He gently tested his leg and smiled. A night of rest and some massage stuff from Nate, and he felt much better. He would have a limp, and probably get tired sooner then he’d liked but he was good to go. Alex helped clean up their blankets and pulled his pack on his back. “If we head straight and don’t stop at any towns, we could reach Jackson tomorrow afternoon.” Alex guessed as he headed towards the door. “I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to stop traveling for a long while.”​

Carlos helped with picking up the blankets and and putting things away. He moved to Kaleb’s side to assess how he was feeling. He looked like he was moving so much better today. Carlos had never met anyone as genuinely strong as him. Not even those beautiful arms on Jordan could beat that. Nate was the first to answer. “I vote travel now and get there faster. We’ve still got a fair amount of supplies. The only things we are pretty low on are Carlos’ explosives and melee weapons. Does anyone have a weapon they can use if we find ourselves in a bad moment?” Because he was pretty sure the answer was no. Thank goodness there were so many of them together.

Kaleb looked at Carlos when he came over and he smiled at him. “I’m feeling much better. Medicine Man to the rescue again.” Kaleb told him with a soft chuckle. He turned to look at Alex and heard Nate. “I’m with them. Travel now. I’m ready to take it easy for a bit.” Kaleb admitted as he shifted and went to walk forward. “I have a knife but that’s it.” Kaleb said as he headed towards the door. “I’ve got my arrows I can use as a knife.” Alex commented as he unblocked the door and pulled it open to check. “Clear.” He said as he moved out into the hallway.​

Carlos shrugged. “My arms have done good enough so far, but the crowbar did help. Until I didn’t have it anymore. So back to arms! I will pick up something as we go. Medicine Man?” Nate shrugged as well. “Knife. Good enough for now.” They quieted as Alex opened the door and followed him out. Moving out was always faster than moving in, because they already took care of any potential threats. Except for that room. They were steering clear of that room. Carlos picked through his pack to make several of his favorite bombs and mines before he quickly ran out of materials. However, if they were just moving and not stopping, the likelihood of needing that was significantly less.

Alex led the way out and to the streets. He looked around but it was clear. He looked back behind him to make sure that Kaleb was okay. Kaleb was moving at a slightly slower pace but he was keeping up with the other three as they entered the street and Alex turned and led them in the direction they had to go, passing the buildings without a second thought and entering the forest again.​

Nate stayed close to Alex as was the only way that he ever felt comfortable anymore. There may be a time that this passed, but he had a feeling that it would be a while from now. Carlos stuck closer back towards Kaleb but stayed somewhere in the middle ish in case something happened. And then they were in the forest. This was where Nate was going to get even more lost than he usually was. At least in the cities, everything looked different. The forest all looked the same. As soon as they were in the comfort of the forest, Carlos fell back to Kaleb. “If you get tired, you let me know.”

Once they were in the forest, Alex felt the comfort and relief inside his chest. He was happy to have Nate close beside him. And he would glance back at the other two. “So. You mentioned that you wanted to hear more about my friends from Seattle? The star crossed lovers? We’ve got a days travel ahead of us and nothing but woods. Would you like to hear about them?” Alex asked as he slowed a little so they were all closer together. Kaleb looked at Carlos and nodded. “Of course I’ll let you know.” Kaleb told him as he looked at Alex. “I’d love to hear more another them.” Kaleb said.​

Without even thinking, Nate took Alex’s hand. He looked at the others to make suer that they were all in agreement and nodded himself. “Yeah, tell us about those star-crossed lovers.” Carlos raised his hand. “I would like this to have a happy ending. I am a sucker for a good happy ending. As beautiful as a tragic and usually sacrificial ending is, I prefer a good, romantic ending.” Nate laughed. “He already told us he didn’t know exactly what happened. Besides, real life doesn’t always work that way.”

Alex felt Nate take his hand as he looked at the other two. He chuckled a little at Carlos’ words and sighed softly. “I hope it was a happy ending.” Alex said before he thought for a moment. “So the first time I met Kaiden and Theo, I was sixteen and I’d just gotten my patrol group. My leader was Ezekiel, who’d lost his group the day before. And what I learned was that Kai and Ezekiel had met the day before too. When they saved each other and worked together against a lot of infected.” Alex began, remembering the first day. “It was actually my first patrol ever and we’d gone to investigate a loud crash only to find Kai and Theo, and a whole lot of infected drawn to the sound, and we had to decide if we could work together.” Alex said as Kaleb listened intently, his eyes wide as he did. What a story so far, and this was just the beginning?​

That certainly was quite the beginning of a story. “So wait,” Nate interrupted. “Kaiden and Theo are wolves, the people who tried to torture murder you and Kaleb, and Ezekiel, who was one of your people, chose to not once but twice work with them? Or at least the one. That is a different level of tolerance.” Carlos was already grinning like the romantic that he was. “Hush, killjoy. Let Alex tell us about this beautiful love story where two people came together despite their differences because of looooove.” He had only heard this admittedly crazy beginning and wanted to know more. “Please go on!”

Alex laughed as he heard Nate’s interruption and nodded. “Okay. So yes. Kaiden and Theo were wolves, and Ezekiel, as I came to find out, was more like me. Kaiden and Theo, were not like the other wolves who shot first and asked questions later. But back to day one. So we make it up the ladder of one building and cross a plank to the roof of another. So now we’re literally stuck together. We can’t go back, so we all go forward. Through the building and onto the street.” Alex paused for a moment as he collected his thoughts. “Wait. So not only did they save each others lives the day before, but now you’re all working together?” Kaleb asked and Alex nodded. “Yeah. But here’s where it gets interesting. Ezekiel and Kai start fighting in the middle of the street. They’re both so angry, and neither man was wrong in their anger either. Because we’ve been at war for years. We both did stuff we shouldn’t have. Anyway, so one pushes the other and Ezekiel gets pushed to the ground but a few minutes late we’re all happy and walking down the street like nothing happened.” Alex finished as Kaleb’s eyes got wide hearing that.​

It was Nate’s turn to question the story. “They were just fighting in the street?” He looked at Kaleb. “At least we didn’t fight in the street. I think my pouting for a night was better than that.” Because even if Nate had a hard time accepting that Kaleb could be one of the people that Nate thought was his enemy, he was never terribly violent. He got kind of cranky, but he never did anything more than that. Carlos did not seem to see this as much of a problem. “That’s the throes of love. The throws.” He chuckled to himself. When Nate looked at him like he lost his mind, he continued. “Well, yeah, they were definitely fighting because they didn’t understand what they were feeling even if it was just not hatred as they were raised to do.” He squeezed Kaleb’s hand. “We have some experience with less than pleasant beginnings. For some of us.” He poorly covered Kaleb’s ears with both of his hands so that he could far too loudly whisper, “That would be him.” But to finish it off, he kissed Kaleb’s cheek and slid a tight arm around his shoulders. “So then what happened?”

Alex snorted a laugh as he heard Nate. “That was not the only fight they had as well. But yes. They fought in the street.” Alex said with a smile as he nodded to Carlos. Kaleb looked at Carlos as he felt the hands poorly covering his ears and heard him anyway. He rolled his eyes and laughed at the kiss and the arm around his shoulders. “It’s a good thing I love you.” Kaleb told him as he looked over at Alex, waiting for the rest of the story. “So after that, we split ways and spent the night away form our group. Once we got up the next day, there were wolves everywhere. Come to find out, it was Kai’s father er adopted father? Anyway, who had gotten all the wolves out looking for him. Thank goodness they found them so we could get back to our group. Then about a week later, there was a prayer note left for us to meet up with them.” Alex continued as they walked.​

“It sure is,” Carlos agreed as he listened to the rest of the story. Nate, however, was struggling with some of this. He had clearly never been part of a star-crossed lovers story like some others. “Wait wait wait, they fought multiple times? And then they also left a.. A prayer note? What exactly is that, and why would they be leaving it with the people that they just fought? Or the one just fought? And also all of them were out there with you?” So Nate was learning that he was easily alarmed by these kinds of things. He took in a deep breath. Alex was clearly okay. “You lived one of those crazy books my mom used to read all the time.”

Alex looked at Nate and chuckled softly. “They fought multiple times with each other and eventually they started fighting beside each other.” Alex said and then he nodded. “A prayer note is something my group did. We have the prophet and we’d leave notes for Her at the place she was killed. And yes, they were out there with us. But we weren’t caught.” Alex told him as they walked. Surprisingly, it was past the middle of the day already. Talking as they walked was a great way to burn time. “And after three years, they had finally started accepting that they were in love with each other and that was when I left. They were trying to figure out just how to be together, considering the warring groups.”​

“That was the most beautiful story I have ever heard,” Carlos said wistfully like he was stuck in a dream somewhere. Nate rolled his eyes. “Fighting for years just to realize you’ve been fighting because of a passion that eventually turns into love or at least attraction, usually because the attraction is already there and often a factor in the fighting is not a beautiful story. It sounds miserable. I would hate to be so miserable and literally fighting with someone until we come to an understanding that we don’t hate each other.” It was an entirely different kind of story he had never experienced. No one he knew ever had that. “How did you manage to deal with that?” He asked Alex, because that must have been miserable for everyone around them as well.

“It was actually beautiful because it teaches them not to judge a book by the cover. It took three years because there was so much hatred taught into us about the other and we had to work to not get caught or anything. But myself? I became good friends with Theo. And we made sure our two boys didn’t kill each other.” Alex said as he chuckled softly. “I thought it was a beautiful sight to see.” He admitted before he looked at Nate. “And seeing them overcome their differences and get along helped me realize I didn’t belong in my group either and it encouraged me to leave. And then I found you.”​

Leave it to Alex to somehow be the optimist again. Nate was slacking on his optimism job. He felt like he hadn’t quite been all happy and up since.. well since he didn’t have to pretend anymore. Since Alex didn’t need him to be that person. Since Alex let him be him instead. But really, even Alex had nothing on Carlos who was looking like he might cry he was so moved. “So how long were you and your brief best friend wishing they would just be together? I would have been in that betting pool.” Nate was amazed at how far they’d made it walking already. This really had been the best plan.

Alex had no idea how he’d become the optimist between him and Nate. “After the first two months, we were realizing that they belonged together so basically the three years it took for them was how long we were wishing they’d figure it out.” Alex admitted as they moved. Kaleb looked up at the sky to see the sun was already more than three quarters through the sky. Wow. The anticipation was building in him the closer they got to Jackson. Especially after hearing this story. He loved the star crossed lovers idea. It made him think of him and Asher. Two people who were different and belonged to warring groups finding a bond between them.​

Two months. For Nate, that sounded crazy that two months in, their friends knew and they continued to be a pain for years after. For Carlos, he was nodding. That sounded exactly like what he thought was going to happen. “You know what that really means? Their arguments had to be some of the most serious and intense arguments in the world. Only people that passionate about each other can get under each other’s skins like that.” He reached for Nate to pull him close, ripping him away from Alex. “I knew these two once. Fought all the time on the QZ. It took us ages to convince them that maybe they fought so much because they were made for each other. They ended up together with children before we left. That was a beautiful time.” Nate shook his head but laughed. “Okay, maybe I can see the merit in the stories. It still seems miserable.”

Alex looked at Carlos and nodded as he heard him. “They got pretty heated, we had to pull them apart once or twice.” Alex agreed as he felt Nate ripped from his side. Kaleb chuckled as he heard Carlos, having a good idea of who he was talking about. They’d broken up more than once fight. Alex glanced over as he heard Carlos’ words. “Wow. And yeah, that sounds like them. And look at that, see the changing trees up ahead? All those maple trees? That’s Idaho.” He said. “We’re on track to make it into Wyoming by tomorrow afternoon.” ​

Nate followed Alex’s gaze and gawked. “How did we travel so far so fast?” He asked a bit impressed. They must have really been into this story. Or perhaps they were used to traveling together at this point. It had been a while since they started. He wrenched free of Carlos and moved back to Alex, taking his hand again. “Perhaps because it was a good story,” Carlos suggested. “Admit it Medicine Man. Star crossed lovers is the single best idea in the entire world. All the best relationships have it.” Hate raised a hand in mock shock. “Excuse you? What about ours?” He raised Alex’s hand that he held. Carlos shrugged.

Alex looked at Nate and chuckled softly. “It’s because I’m such a great storyteller, we lost track of time.” Alex said as they crossed the border. He felt Nate take his hand again and he heard Carlos’ words. “Our relationship is much better than a star crossed lovers. We were friends to lovers.” Alex told Nate as he looked ahead of them. Kaleb was getting tired now, and he looked at Carlos. “My love, I’m going to need your support. I fear my leg will not be able to support me.” Kaleb told Carlos with a tired sigh.​

Nate had to agree with that. Friends to lovers was a far better dynamic. Instant friends really. They had been friends the entire time. He wondered who else was like that. Carlos slowed with Kaleb. “Do you want me to just support or do you want me to carry you? I can do either for you.” Whatever Kaleb needed, Carlos was ready to do that. Nate looked at the trees, marveling at how well Alex could know about them when he lived so much of his life in Seattle and on an island so close to that. “So, my monkey man, are you going to treat us to a fancy dinner?”

Kaleb thought for a moment as he looked at the other two. “Just support me. Unless we’re stopping for the night?” Kaleb asked. Alex looked up, saw the sun very low in the sky and nodded. “Let’s camp here. I’ll go get us dinner and you three get things set up here?” Alex suggested, looking at them. Kaleb nodded, turning to pull his pack off and grabbing his blanket. Alex kissed Nate’s cheek before he turned away. “I’ll be back.” He said with a nod, turning and heading into the woods. He pulled his bow and walked slowly through. A twig and his head turned. Buck. Alex drew back his bow and fired. The deer dropped and he walked over to it, picking it up and making his way back to them and once there he set the buck down and started preparing it for dinner.​
