Kaleb walked with Carlos as they were closer to the door the other two had disappeared through. Alex didn’t enjoy the dark room and he didn’t find much either. A few medical supplies and some bullets for Kaleb’s pistol. When Nate returned to his side, he took the others hand and led him back out the door to check out the next room.

Carlos gave them an inquisitive look, and Nate shrugged as they moved out into the hall once more. Not much. He pulled out the small pack of explosives and tossed it lightly to Carlos who smiled and shoved that into his pack. Nate walked to the next room and paused to listen outside the door. Carlos walked him and Kaleb closer to potentially be of use if something were to happen.

When Alex came out, he showed Kaleb the bullets and Kaleb smiled with a nod as Alex shoved the bullets into Kaleb’s pack for him. Alex walked to the next room with Nate, looking at him with a curious expression, wondering if the room was clear at least from a noise perspective. Alex listened himself as well but didn’t hear anything.

Noise wise, the room seemed clear. Nate stepped into the room and began to walk it. There was so much knocked over that it was always so hard to see what was around every corner of shelving units both standing and fallen. As he slipped around one, he froze. The runner, crouched in the corner, startled him. He took in a deep breath, realizing that this was not the imminent danger that his body suddenly assumed it would be. After a moment of composure, he pulled out the hunting knife, slowly and quietly snuck up behind the poor guy and slit his throat before stabbing into the appropriate places. He eased the runner down and backed into the central area of the room.

Alex had followed Nate in but went the opposite direction, searching the shelving units there. As he came around one, he froze too. Apparently there was more than one runner. But this one was awake and looking right at him. Alex drew his bow as the runner screeched but he didn’t have the time or space to fire it. The inhuman speed of the infected had him stumbling backwards. Alex landed on his butt and back. Alex scrambled backwards, away from the runner for the moment but he wouldn’t be fast enough. He looked up as the runner came towards him. He had no room for his bow, there wasn’t enough space and he didn’t have a melee weapon on him.

As Nate moved back to the central area, a secondary runner was moving quickly towards Alex who was on the floor. No no no. Nate was too far away. He could not make it in time. Knowing this, he was still already rushing forward, but the fear of losing Alex was so much that it hurt him. But then the runner stopped as it started to shake in place just out of reach of Alex. Stunned. The sound of the shattering glass of the bottle Carlos threw from just inside the doorway finally registered in Nate’s mind. Stunned. He rushed forward to grab the runner and take him down with the hunter’s knife. He did not ease this one. He let it drop and then was immediately down by Alex. “Are you okay?” Nate asked as Carlos retreated back to Kaleb.

Alex’s eyes were wide with fear as he watched the runner come towards him. There was no way out of this, he wasn’t going to be quick enough to get away. Then the runner stopped, the sound of glass shattering in the air as he saw Nate rush forward and drop the runner. Alex was working on catching his breath as he looked at Nate, now by him. “I’m okay. Clean.” Alex said, shifting so he could stand up. Kaleb had steadied himself against the wall while Carlos helped them and once he was back, Kaleb smiled. “Good job love.” He said softly as Alex got to his feet. “Next room we find that’s suitable for resting, I say we stop.” Alex suggested, moving out of the room.

Nate had to agree. That was too close a call for his liking, and he would most definitely like to call it a day. He stayed by Alex as he stood up. “Five feet. We always get in trouble when we don’t stay close.” He thought of that very first time a runner got him from behind when he was going off on his own. That was absolutely no fun. He slipped his hand into Alex’s as they moved out into the hall once again. Carlos smiled as well as he moved back into his position as Kaleb’s support. “Just doing what I can. I’m going to need another throwing bottle. I was holding onto that one for ages.” He sighed like it actually mattered. There were plenty of throwing implements around. He would be fine. “Let’s go find somewhere a little less full of friends.”

“Five feet and no more.” Alex agreed, remembering what happened the times they were on their own. Alex squeezed his hand gently as they entered the hall again. He glanced around and made for the next door. He was ready to call it a night. So far this small town wasn’t the greatest supply stop. Kaleb heard Carlos sigh after he lost his bottle and chuckled. “I’m sure we can find you another bottle love. We can’t exactly replace Handsome.” Kaleb commented as they moved to the next room. He was ready to rest, wrapped up in Carlos’ arms and let his leg rest too.

Carlos decidedly did not laugh but tried his hardest to look serious and sad about his broken bottle. But instead he reached out and squeezed Alex’s shoulder before they made it to the next room. Nate grabbed the doorknob and paused to listen. He heard.. something? He shook his head. Not risking it. He jerked his head to the side and pointed to his ear. Next room, please. He led them further down this winding hall and to hopefully somewhere that would be a less dangerous. Carlos appreciated the decision. He may have been joking about the bottle, but that did mean he could not do that again until he had something else that he could throw.

Alex heard Kaleb’s words and smiled softly at the squeeze to his shoulder. He was right beside Nate when the other paused, hand on the doorknob. He nodded at the motion of next room. He didn’t want to risk anything especially after that. Kaleb appreciated it too, following Nate and Alex a little slower than before. He was getting tired. Alex found the next room and listened. Quiet. He opened the door and peeked his head in. Inside was pretty bare, no beds instead it looked like a conference room with boarded windows and a few knocked over chairs and a long table. He led the way inside and checked the room, no hiding spaces and no friends. “Let’s rest here tonight.” Alex suggested.

Carlos changed his pace to match Kaleb’s. Nate was also moving a little slower though not because of that kind of tired. He was still reeling a bit from Alex’s near miss. As they moved into the room he nodded towards Alex and waited for Carlos and Kaleb to come inside before he closed it. He picked up one of the sturdier looking knocked over chairs to block the door. “Looks good enough for now. I’ll sleep anywhere if that means eventually we don’t have to sleep in old, run down places like this anymore.” He moved around the long table and started pulling out his blanket. Carlos beckoned for Kaleb to tell him where he wanted to be tonight.

Alex nodded in agreement. “Couple more restful nights in places like this and then we’ll have our farmhouse in Jackson with more family.” Alex said as he moved with Nate and pulled his own blanket and laid it down. “Oh. Carlos? I found these and I was wondering if they were good to learn how to draw.” Alex asked, sitting down on the blankets and pulling out the notepad and colored pencils to show him.. Kaleb pointed to a spot near Alex and Nate but enough space apart to be their own pair tonight. Kaleb grabbed the blankets, as he rested his leg. He didn’t need to move to lay two blankets on the ground. Once the blankets were down, Kaleb used Carlos to sit down, back against the wall that he chose to lay their blankets by.

Nate sat facing the other two as they settled in as well but still close to Alex. His crossed legs just barely touched him. It was the kind of touching that he did not even notice anymore. Carlos turned to face Alex and his whole face lit up. “Well that’s just perfect! Where did you find gems in all this rough?” He grinned excitedly at the idea of sharing his favorite thing with Alex. “When are we starting those drawing lessons? Because I am always prepared to have show off and transfer all of my skills.” As soon as Kaleb was sitting, he too sat down on the side of Kaleb that was closer to the other two. How could he say no to drawing? He couldn’t. This was a fact.

Alex was happy that Nate was still close to him as he shifted so he was laying on his stomach. The notepad set in front of him with the colored pencils. “Maybe we could do a small lesson now? Relax a little after this crazy day?” Alex asked, tilting his head as he smiled. “And it’s my little secret how I found them.” He added with a wink. Kaleb rested against the wall, twisted leg straight out in front of him while the other leg was bent a little. “That sounds like a great idea. Teach him all you know love.” Kaleb said, patting Carlos’ leg with a smile.

Nate couldn’t do anything for drawing. He was, however, useful in other fields. As Carlos scooted himself closer to Alex for this impromptu drawing lesson, Nate stood up and moved over to Kaleb. He sat against the wall and pointed to his leg. “Do you think I could take a look? Mess around? Do the crazy medic thing I keep annoying everyone about?” Carlos grabbed his notebook out of his pack and opened it to a completely random page. “So fundamentals of drawing? Find what you want to draw. That’s how you get inspiration. If you don’t want to draw it, you won’t be able to. And then, when inspiration strikes, you do it.” He laughed. “But probably not that easily. It’s just a good thing to consider. Um. Beginning? Shapes. Everything is made of shapes that get blurred and run together.”

Kaleb looked up at Nate when he came over and sat beside him. “Feel free to check it out Medicine Man.” Kaleb told him with a smile, he rested his head on the wall and allowed Nate free rein to take a look at his leg. Alex looked at Carlos, and listened to him. Shapes. Inspiration. Okay. Alex took a brown pencil and started trying to sketch something simple. Brown hair, brown eyes. A simple circle for the face. Blue pencil for the glasses. Alex bit his lip as he tried to draw and then showed Carlos. “What uh, what do you think?” Alex asked softly.

Nate scooched a little forward and gently placed his hands on Kaleb’s leg. It was, after all, what he did. “You know, Alex was saying I could be a masseur. I think that would be fun. But really, I think I would be better at the physical therapy. I think he just likes the massages.” Nate smiled as he worked out some of the tension in his leg. “I’m going to move it around and probably make you a little uncomfortable. Sorry. But maybe I can figure out what you need to work it out and have a normal leg again. One day.”

Carlos watched with great enthusiasm. “I can tell what you’re doing which means it’s a great start.” He pushed over his journal as he laid on his stomach right beside Alex. “So I like to start with the eyes. They tell me where people are going to face. Sometimes, I get more sketchy like this.” He started with one curved horizontal line and then a curved vertical line crossing down like a fancy T. “The lines are showing you the face. This is your brow ridge and this is the middle of the face where the nose bridge would be. And then you can circle in here for the head and move this down for the jaw but that’s if you’re wanting a more technical body.” He moved to another section and drew one little circle and then another a little below that and off center. Then he drew a crescent like shape beside that before draw a circle that intersection all of them. “But I like to draw the eyes first.” He erased the lines in the middle of the circle and started coloring in what remained of that circle in the middle. “The pupil. These are the natural reflections of light.” He drew another circle around all of it and stole the blue colored pencil. In the bigger circle, he started drawing flicks of blue lines from the center and out.

Kaleb watched Nate, felt the hands on his leg and focused on his voice. If there was one thing he learned about injuries, it was pay attention to the speaker rather than the injury. “I- Is that so? Massages are nice. And thats okay.” Kaleb said, biting his lip as he felt the discomfort and a little pain shoot from his leg. It was normal especially being handled like it was.

Alex watched Carlos lay beside him on his stomach and he looked at him, listening to his explanation. “Okay. Okay.” Alex said quietly, rolling his eyes teasingly as Carlos stole the blue pencil. He flipped his page and grabbed the brown one again. This time he focused on the eyes, working more on details. He would glance over at Carlos occasionally as he drew, constantly checking between the two of their drawings and his eyes looked much more natural this time. “Hmm. Like this?” Alex asked as he looked beside him to Carlos.

Nate found the problem quickly. And to say it was a problem was not exactly true. This could be worked on. This was not like a break or fracture that healed incorrectly. This mostly healed like it was supposed to, but it just didn’t quite go back to normal. “I know. And what I am doing right now is not a massage, so I apologize for that as well. But, maybe later we do massages for everyone. Work out all that tension that the world being so dangerous and hard like this does to a person.” He used this moment to do some of the more unpleasant things with his leg. Quickly of course. No lingering.

Carlos almost got lost in it. He pried his eyes up and over to Alex who was copying him. “That is pretty good for this being literally your first time to have ever drawn anything. You’re a natural! But you see how it’s all just shapes? Lines and circles that all interconnect?” He pointed to his own drawing with a harsh jab. “But here’s the real kicker. Pretty details are great and all, but this could be anyway. Sure, I used blue so… I mean we all know who I like to draw the most. But if I were to say grab this green now,” he swapped the colors, “and do it all over again,” he quickly redrew and did the green, “we don’t know who that is even if I drew exactly the same thing. Because realism still doesn’t tell the story of who it is. You have to find all those little things that give us the clues. Like those glasses.” He smiled. “And you said quick lesson and I dumped a whole thing on you. I am so good at this!”

Kaleb bit down a little more on his lip but he nodded. “A group massage session. That’s quite an idea. Although I understand that this isn’t a massage.” He said as a soft gasp slipped out, he still wasn’t one for pain, even after two years of surviving in the country. “I’m g- good.”

Alex looked at Carlos and heard him. He nodded with a smile as he listened. “Right. It could be anyone. But I understand that without the details, it’s unsure who it is.” Alex agreed, as he nudged Carlos’ shoulder with his own. “You are a pretty great teacher. Maybe one day I’ll be half as good of an artist as you.” Alex said as he started sketching out the hair and glasses, and even the finer details on the face.

Nate smiled as he backed off the working through tension and started with practically massaging around the hurt area. It was the least he could do for ruining everything. “Here, let me make it marginally less uncomfortable, and then I’ll stop. Hopefully this helps you for tomorrow.”

Carlos grinned and watched, nodding and praising as he went. “Look at this individual strands of hair. Perfection! You’re going to be such a quick learner. You always have been, haven’t you? I can tell. Oh that’s beautiful.” He watched for a little longer, shoving his own notebook away. It was not as important anymore. It was not what they were working on. “How much do you want to do tonight?”

Kaleb let out a relaxed sigh at the practical massage. It felt nice and comfortable. “Thank you.” Kaleb told Nate, a smile on his face. “That feels much better.” He added as he looked over at the other two.

Alex blushed a little and nodded. “I’ve been that way with most things, except for using my bow. It took extra practice for that.” Alex replied as he worked on the hair. He hummed softly as he drew a little more before he yawned. “I think that’s good enough for tonight. I don’t know if I can keep my eyes open much longer.” Alex said with a small tired laugh, looking at Carlos. “Thanks by the way. For that drawing lesson.”

Carlos shoved an arm over Alex and squeezed with a big hug. “You are so welcome, Handsome. And when we aren’t in a place like this, we can have a whole setup with lots of mediums and things to draw with and it’s going to be great!” He grinned over at the other two who seemed to also be finishing up now. Nate slowly stopped and then stood up. “Thanks for letting me hurt you a little bit,” he laughed and walked back over to his blanket with Alex. Carlos rolled to the other blanket and reached for Kaleb’s arm which he pulled close to his chest with a sigh. “My most beautiful love, I am exhausted. Would you like to sleep away the hard day?”

Alex smiled at the arm over him and the big hug. “That sounds wonderful!” Alex said with a bigger smile, as he looked at the two finishing up. Kaleb smiled and nodded. “You’re welcome.” He said as he watched Carlos roll over to him. Kaleb felt him take his hand as he shimmied himself down so he was laying on his back. “I’m absolutely ready to sleep the day away.” Kaleb agreed as he turned into his side, arm over Carlos’ side and pulled him close. Alex looked at Nate and rolled so he was on his back, arm out in invitation. “Come join me love.” Alex said with a smile.
