Kaleb was looking around when he felt a hand take his. His eyes slid to look at Nate with a grateful smile and squeezed the hand gently. He knew the Fireflies and FEDRA both bombed zones and he’d lost his mom to a bombing. Alex picked up the pace, knowing they were close to the edge of the city. As they moved further through, they came to the checkpoint. Cells lined the right side as they came through and Alex bit his lip. “I hate this place. It’s not the first time I’ve been here.” He commented as he glared at the cages. Kaleb saw the cages and he felt a heavy sigh slipped out. He’d never seen them in use but he knew what they were for.​

Carlos was not exactly sure what these cells, these cages were for, but he could guess. He did not know a lot about FEDRA’s past, and he never really asked Kaleb to tell him. That was a part of the past he was willing to let disappear. Nate on the other hand did know. He knew too much. It made him sick to think about, because even if they said it was for the good of everyone, he hated it. He hated how they treated people like animals. Whoever they were. Whoever chose to shove people into cells instead of finding a better way to handle the question. Maybe there had not been a better way, but Nate couldn’t even imagine choosing that. “When did you come?” he asked Alex. Curious. Hoping it was not too bad.

Alex looked at Nate and then a faint smile crossed his face. “It was about three years ago. I was with another warrior, one that was a brother to me and uh.. two wolves.” Alex admitted as he looked ahead of them. “We were learning more about each other and we went for a walk around the checkpoint, and the surrounding area back there because neither of our groups patrolled around here.” Alex explained as Kaleb’s eyes widened hearing his words and tilted his head a little. “You met wolves that didn’t try and take you?” Kaleb asked as Alex shook his head. “Actually, they became like brothers to me too.” Alex replied.​

That was not at all what Nate was expecting from this conversation. He thought that he could be hearing some sad or scary horror story about these wolves and how they were awful to everyone even though they overthrew FEDRA, and Nate thought they were awful enough already. “It’s good to know there are some good people out there. What happened to them?” This question was also a toss up, but he thought he would ask. If they were good people who were like brothers, Nate wanted to know about them. Carlos too was curious about this.

Alex looked at Nate and shrugged his shoulders. “Last I knew, Kaiden and Ezekiel were getting close and I don’t know about Theo.” Alex said. He didn’t know what had happened after he left, all he knew was that it was three years of them working together and Alex was able to come to terms with his own self and he got the courage to leave. “I hope they’re okay.” Alex added as he looked at the ground before he looked ahead of them. Kaleb listened to Alex and hummed softly. ​

Nate held both Kaleb’s and Alex’s hands, swinging them gently as they walked. Carlos, who could not hold both of their hands at the same time, chose Kaleb. He leaned over and grinned. “Please please please tell me that Kaiden and Ezekiel were star-crossed lovers who learned to look past the prejudices of their families.” He sighed as he thought about it. “I sure hope they ran away to live happily ever after together.” He leaded his head on Kaleb’s shoulder which did stifle the walking a little. “Wouldn’t that be beautiful?” Nate, who was less of a romantic than Carlos, simply said, “They are probably fine if they’re anything like you.”

Kaleb and Alex felt Nate swing their hands as they walked. Alex looked over at Carlos and smiled. “That’s exactly what they are, though it took a while and more than one fight between them for either of them to really figure it out.” Alex said as he sighed. “I hope they did too.” He added as they slowed their walk a little when Kaleb felt Carlos’ head on his shoulder. “It would be a beautifully romantic love story.” Kaleb agreed as they left the checkpoint and came to the overgrown road. “This should take us to Oregon, and from there we can cross into Idaho then Wyoming is just after that.” Alex said.​

They let go of one another as they exited the checkpoint. Everyone one of them was ready to leave this area and not look back. No more Washington for any of them. Carlos sighed as he thought about this beautiful love story. “You have to tell us more about them later, Handsome. I need to know!” Nate chuckled and patted him on the shoulder. “But first, we are leaving. And Alex’s directions make it sound like Jackson is literally just that way.” He pointed ahead with the road and laughed. “So we better get moving.”

Alex and Kaleb were more than ready to leave this city and state behind. “I would gladly tell you more about them, but Nate’s right. We have a few days of travel but we should be in Wyoming soon.” Alex said as Kaleb’s face lit up. “Let’s get moving then yeah?” Kaleb said, a smile on his face at the chance to see Asher again. The chance to retire and maybe even enjoy a ball with his love made Kaleb even more happy and ready to see Jackson with his own eyes.​

Carlos sighed loudly but moved along as he should. They had places to get, and lingering would not get them anywhere now that they had a new destination, he wanted to get there a whole lot more than where they had been going. No offense Nate. It wasn’t his fault that Carlos had no investment in the place. Plus this place tried to take his Kaleb in the worst way. So. He felt justified. Nate was warring with the fact that this place caused so many issues, but it was better after the big cuddles the night before. It was going to be okay. He knew it. “Okay, then get us to Oregon beautiful.”

Alex nodded as he smiled, though he heard Carlos’ sigh. It was rather loud after all. He took Nate’s hand, then took Carlos’ as Kaleb moved to the other side of his love. They were all connected as he led them down the street. “So did they tell you anything about Jackson before you four separated?” Alex asked as he looked at Carlos, a smile on his face as he walked. He was curious and excited for this new chapter in their life.​

They were an unbreakable line. They were an unmovable wall as they journeyed forward. Nothing could stop them if they had each other like this. “Well, they didn’t know much. They were looking for Jordan’s old mentor back when he was a smuggler. They figured out enough to think he was in some community called Jackson. It’s this closely guarded secret, so they didn’t know much more than where it was.” He looked forward, imagining the same made up image he had seen since they told them about this place. “I wish I knew more, but they didn’t know a lot.”

Alex listened as he swung their hands together, both sets. “What’s a smuggler?” Alex asked after Carlos was done speaking. “And that’s okay, it makes it all the more exciting to get there.” Alex added as they walked, looking ahead of them. Kaleb heard Alex’s question and chuckled softly. “A smuggler is a man or woman who would find things that people inside the QZ’s would want. They got paid usually in guns or ration cards. Or at least that’s what I gathered from listening to Jordan.” Kaleb explained as they moved together. One family.​

Carlos thought he would add in his small bits of knowledge. “I knew a smuggler. Actually, I didn’t know the person but Salim did. He was the reason I got the spray paint. I know Salim had to work to get what we needed, and it was hard since we did not have a whole lot to trade them for. Ration cards was usually the answer though sometimes we could procure other things.” He leaned closer to Alex so that he could pretend to whisper, “I may or may not have committed some illegal acts to get what I wanted.” He grinned but bit back his chuckle. Nate rolled his eyes. “We worked with smugglers all the time,” he added. “That was how we could get the power to overtake FEDRA in some of the QZs.”

Oh. Alex was learning so much more. He looked from Kaleb to Carlos and then to Nate. He blushed a little at the whispered words from Carlos. “Yeah. It was smugglers who managed to get a lot of the stuff for the Fireflies to make their explosives in Denver.” Kaleb mentioned, no harshness or venom in his words. It was just the truth. “Oh. Wow. So people would willingly risk their lives to get things for others just for ration cards and stuff?” Alex asked. It was so bizarre to him, and he thought the wolves were weird, this was even stranger.​

“My mama and I had a brief foray into smuggling,” Nate said. “It was brief because we were bad at it. We were good at gathering intel not moving physical objects. After almost getting caught and then actually getting caught and then barely getting back to the headquarters alive, my mama decided to retire our life of smuggling and go back to our usual scouting and clearing out areas.” Their lives were all so different, and still they found similarities. Except for Alex at least when it came to smuggling.

Alex listened to Nate talk about his own experience when it came to smuggling. It was rather entertaining listening to him. “I’m glad you decided to stop smuggling, I would’ve hated to have not met you because you’d done such a bad job at it.” Alex commented as he squeezed Nate’s hand gently. Kaleb looked at Nate then Alex and then to Carlos. “I caught a smuggler once. He was just headed into the QZ with some paper and drawing supplies. I took them from him but he refused to say who hired him, so I let him go. I fear that those may have been for you my love.” Kaleb commented with a small smile.​

Carlos’ mouth dropped to the floor with an over exaggerated gasp. “You’re the reason I never got that? I just thought Salim’s guy fell through. Wow. To know that my love was the person who was actively working against me is just sad.” He turned to Alex, shaking his head. “You see how I am treated all the time? He clearly does not love me if he took away all of my drawing. Would you believe that because I never got any of that, there went several ration cards and I had to make do with the terrible pens we stole from the guards that one day.” He paused and slowly looked at Kaleb. “You know, I don’t know who Jade stole them from. Did she steal them from you? Because that would be too funny.”

Kaleb saw the over exaggerated gasp and chuckled loudly. “What can I say? I needed to make sure you didn’t use all your creativity before you could design your mural.” He said while Alex shook his head. “That’s horrible. How dare he treat you like that, having to make use of terrible pens.” Alex said with a snort of laughter. When Kaleb heard Carlos’ words and it was his turn for the over exaggerated gasp. “That’s where those pens went. I was wondering why all my pens were gone. And they weren’t that terrible.” Kaleb said as he put his free hand do his chest like he was insulted though the smile said otherwise.​

“I would like you to know,” Carlos began his declaration, “that I was almost never the one to commit the thefts that we as a whole may or may not have committed. Like those pens? That was Jade not me. And the radio that Salim used all the time. That was Basira and also Jade and still not me.” He stood up straighter and looked away from everyone. “I am a perfect angel child unlike apparently Jade. I swear, she was the actual criminal mastermind. I don’t know why everyone decided that I was the lead troublemaker.” Nate raised his hand and added, “Is it because you were?”

Kaleb arched an eyebrow as he listened to Carlos, he waited to hear what he had to say and snorted a laugh at Nate’s additional words. “You were the leader because they listened to you. And because you have used them to get what you wanted without getting it yourself. Like the paper, drawing supplies, pens, oh and spray paint.” Kaleb said, looking at Carlos with a grin on his face. Alex looked between the two and couldn’t help but smile as he listened to them. “So it’s really your fault. But also it’s not your fault?” Alex asked.​

It was Carlos’ time to laugh, because even he could not argue with that logic. Carlos got away with things, because he didn’t actually do them. He did a lot, true, but he didn’t do what the girls did. Or what Salim did. And they didn’t get in as much trouble because everyone knew it was really Carlos. “You know why this adorable once was an officer is going to marry me?” He asked both Alex and Nate. “Because he likes that I’ve always been trouble. Even he is not immune to a bad boy.” Carlos lowered his voice to a whisper that again Kaleb too could hear. “That’s why he likes Asher so much. You want to talk about a bad boy?” Nate chuckled lightly, trying not to be too loud or outrageous. He loved the way Carlos and Kaleb were together. As they walked in this silly line of beautiful, he was so glad that they had the two of them too.

Kaleb heard Carlos and so did Alex. Alex smiled and laughed softly as he took in his words while Kaleb blushed and looked away. His blush got worse when Asher was brought up. “Look.. I was always the perfect soldier, the General’s good son. So I was naturally drawn to trouble makers like you and bad boys like Asher. I can’t help it.” Kaleb said, trying to defend himself although the smile on his face was big and his face was pink from the blush. Alex listened and heard the light chuckle from Nate and smiled softly. He was happy that they were together and he looked up ahead. “Guys. Look there.” Alex said. Up ahead in the distance was a small town.​

“Carlos,” Nate stage whispered as they neared this small town coming up. “You don’t get to be the trouble making bad boy who brings all the infected to us in the streets, m’kay?” He laughed at the memory of the story as he reached behind Alex to pat the big guy’s back. Carlos sighed and shrugged. “I do that one time and no one, even the people who weren’t there, lets me live it down. That is entirely unfair.” He let go of Alex and pulled Kaleb to his side to plant a big, sloppy kiss on his cheek. “See, the kind of trouble you like.” He let him go and bounded forward towards the small town.

Kaleb chuckled as he heard Nate’s stage whisper and remembered the first town they’d ever come to. “It’s unfair that you did it at all. Though I suppose it was partly my fault because I was being a little bit more of an officer than a person.” Kaleb admitted as he felt Carlos pull him to his side and he smiled at the big and sloppy kiss to his cheek. “Yeah. You’re right.” He admitted as Carlos let him go. “We should keep up with him. Or he will start trouble.” Kaleb said as he moved faster, Alex glanced at Nate and chuckled, following the two men. As they got to the town, Alex looked at one of the signs. “Calliope Oregon. Thank goodness we’re out of Washington.” Alex commented as he looked around the town, before he moved to the first building. “Join me in searching this one?” Alex whispered to Nate.​
