Fantasy The Core of Power

@rosamortelle

''You're welcome. I am Byron but when I wear my mask please call me Chain Snake'' said Byron coming near Ella and revealing his red eyes with slit-shaped pupils . ''I made some egg drop soup, italian style; you should eat'' he continued. After that he distanced himself from the female and started his punching and kicking practice. Both his punches and kicks were very fast but still human, nothing unnatural about it. Altough there were probably very few people who had that kind of punching speed.

Byron practiced silently, sometimes he stopped to note down a a few things on his notebook then he'd start training again.

Sentinel let most of the metal disintegrate, but kept the mask on. "It's simple, really," he said without even bothering to turn around. "He was laying on the ground bleeding out and asking me for help. I knew I had to help him and I knew I could get out unharmed, so I did. Now I just need to get him to someone who can do more than basic first aid. I don't think he will die anymore unless he contracts some infection, and we are in the sewer, but he still needs someone who can stitch his wounds. Why do you even care?" The last statement came out more cynical than he intended, but that's the way he felt about a lot of things these days.

When the metal disintegrated, Valerie felt as if she could suddenly breathe with more ease. The feeling of being close to steel was fading, but there was still a clear sensation of steel about that reminded her not to relax.

"Maybe I am curious? After all, this here man showered the police with bullets, not the sort of guy I'd go to prom with if you know what I am saying." She paused briefely before continuing: "I suppose you're partners of sorts? Mutants fighting the system perhaps?"

Valerie knew she was in trouble if these people turned out to be part of some crazy organisation. In fact, that was most certainly the case. But the excitement of the moment clouded her mind, so that thought never quite struck her as relevant.

"I mean, you didn't just happen to walk the street and decide to jump into an armed conflict, now did you?" She realised that she wasn't making a good point. Isn't that pretty much -exactly- what I just did?

Conner ignored Erin's first question, not really caring anymore. He watched, amused, as she peeked her head out of the sewer cautiously, almost as if she were afraid to get caught. He remembered that he was still trying to be his mom in terms of intimidation, and remembering how scary her smiling had been, quickly dropped that intimidation, allowing his shoulders to relax and himself to come back down to his level.

When she asked about finishing the sleepover, his grin got bigger, "Yes, if you'll still have me." His smile faltered, however, when he noticed that Vittra wasn't there.

Brows furrowing, he asked, "Where's Vittra?"

Sentinel sighed, stood up, and turned to talk directly to the voice. He was surprised to see no one was there, but he supposed he shouldn't be. "No. This is the first time I have ever seen him. My partner caused a suitable distraction so the rest of our team could get some supplies, mainly food, for the rest of us. Truth be told, he is more of a complication than anything. Look at it this way. If you could save a man from dying, but didn't, doesn't that make you just as responsible for his death than the person who pulled the trigger? I know what he did, but that does not make it right to just leave him to die. So yes, I did "just happen to walk the street and decide to jump into an armed conflict" as you put it."

"Vittra?" Erin asked, looking around. "She was just there! Or well... I don't remember seeing her come up the ladder." Erin noted.

"Also, for now, your staying at my place is fine. I'm not interested in it becoming a permanent fixture but I don't mind helping another mutant out." Erin added, giving Conner a kind smile but thinking about how having a government friend might come in handy. "Do you think Vittra is still down in the sewer?" She added, sticking her head back down in the manhole though she couldn't actually see anything.

"Vittra!" She called.

"Sometimes people get what they diserve. This guy put bullets in several policemen. And the way I see it, the policemen arrived at the scene because of actions taken by your party. Now, am I wrong to say that the blood spilled tonight is all over your hands?" Valerie had let her Vittra personae take over. When she did, she tended to sound dramatic as if she was in a play or something. For some reason she found joy in acting like this, placing blame on someone she didn't even know. She was smirking as she awaited the answer from Sentinel.

"Vittra!" It was Erin's voice. It sort of snapped Valerie out of her personae and she became weary again. She didn't respond though. Instead she continued: "So, what is your plan from here on out? Leave him?" She instead shifted position so that Sentinel wouldn't know exactly where she was based on the direction of her voice.

It took a moment for Barry to realize what the invisible girl had just said. "Hey," he choked out. He indicated for her to come a little closer so that he could be heard.

"Those cops deserved to be shot. They all deserved to be shot. All I am doing is repaying them for all the injustice, all the pain that the government has caused us. Those cops were the tools of the government that were meant to take us away and to turn us into mindless weapons. Don't I represent the anger in all of us? You heard the people in the streets calling for us to be killed, exterminated, or taken away. No one ever gave us a chance to live our lives. Would you stand by and watch them take us away one by one? Or take action and stop them?" Barry finished his speech. That took a lot out of him, but he felt it needed to be said. He waited for the responses from both mutants.

Valerie carefully stepped forward to hear what the injured man was saying, she kept close to the wall still keeping an eye at Sentinel. "You know they say, never argue with an idiot; they'll drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience." She paused "I think that pretty much sums up your little show up there. Like... Do you think it helps?! Do you think they'll be less angry, less hatefull? And if it comes to that, who the fuck do you think will exterminate the other first? Us or the guys with guns, airplanes, tanks, and -trained- mutants?" She shook her head in denyal - not that anyone could see it.

Barry didn't change his expression. He stared at nothing. Hate us less? No...they hate us enough, he thought. Whoever this girl was, she was blind to the truth of the government. She was never held captive by the government. She has no idea... he thought, grimly. He looked at her, or at least where he thought she was, his eyes sunken and tired. "If I know anything about how mankind is like, it's that hate never goes away. Acting innocent won't stop them from hating mutants. Where do you think all those weapons are pointed at? You, me, all of us. They're coming after us whether you like it or not. Are you telling me you're going to lie down and wait for them to pull the trigger?" Barry said. After that, he remained silent and disgruntled. He wasn't going to say anymore than that. He really just wanted to rest, but he couldn't close his eyes. Barry was as awake as he could ever be and it hurt. His head throbbed and pain sprang like needles in his gunshot wounds. Then he realized... Where are we going to go anyway? he tossed that thought around his mind for a while. The other two are still by the entrance, Barry noticed. Should we leave with them?

Sentinel closed his eyes and chose his words carefully while listening to Berry's speach. "The way you see it is wrong and invalid. Should they have come because of my group he still killed them. Me saving him would not have changed that. However, they showed up because of him. The police will black certain streets if they predict a group of mutants will show up. This means they were prepared to deal with us. Hey clearly has an ability they were not prepared to deal with and called in some artillery. Do I agree with what he did? Certainly not! Is he still better than you? Most definitely! His reasons and morals are all skewed, but at least he is doing something he believes will help. We both know it won't, but it is still better than you. What do you do all day? Scrounge for spare change all day hoping you will be fine and not worrying about anyone else? From the start even I had a group. We worked to get her well and protected each other and now wee will do the same with our new friends. What will you do in the mean time?" He turned around and looked at Barry. "Yes they are aiming at us, but killing cops won't help change that. It's like you said; they are just tools. To stop it you stop the person with the tool. Anyway, can you stand up?"

Barry listened to what the metal mutant had said, finally speaking up. Killing the tools...won't stop them, Barry thought long and hard about that. He slowly came to a conclusion. He was going for the wrong people. Barry wasn't helping unless he attacked the source. It still made him feel better, killing those cops, but what this mutant said was true... The mutant asked if he could get up. "If I had a crutch of some sort, I think so." He sat up, slowly so as to not agitate his wounds. He couldn't get the metal mutants words out of his head though. Perhaps some of his killings were uncalled for. But that doesn't take into account all the times he had to get away from the cops. He had no choice. It was kill or be killed, he told himself. But it is true...if I really wanted to get back at the government for all that they've done to me, I should go for the source. That would end everything. Barry then focused on trying to get his feet under him. He struggled. With one leg completely out of commission, he would need that crutch to stand.

Conner sighed, realizing that Erin's suggestion was completely possible. Looks like we're going back down, he thought to himself, desire to sleep settling back in as he lowered back into the sewer. He looked around, Vittra nowhere in sight. Confused, he asked, "Vittra?" He still didn't know her ability, and it could be that she could teleport or something else resulting in not seeing her.

He guessed she might just want to be alone or something, and though he was a bit worried about where she might be, he was set to go back up until he heard the light murmur of voices around the bend. Quietly, he moved in the direction of the voices, hearing three distinctly as he reached the end of the visible tunnels. He peeked around the corner, and, to his surprise, saw only two people- the metal mutant and the person he had picked up. They were talking to someone, and he finally figured out that the voice he was hearing was Vittra's.

The one that killed the police- at least, he thought that was who they were- started talking about why he thought the police deserved death. So I was right.. he thought, uncomfortable with all the talk of killing members of the government. He decided Vittra's business didn't concern him, and quickly left, disquieted by the topic she had been discussing.

He climbed back up, white as a sheet, and turned to Erin, whispering, "I'm sure she's fine."

Ella picked up the meal that the boy had set for her. She realized now that they really did mean no harm. Famished from the recent events, Ella quickly ate her meal. Wiping her mouth with her arm, Ella heard a slight beeping sound resonating by her ear. Remembering that she was still wearing her computer glass, which somehow didn't break, Ella assumed that The rest of the raid group was contacting her. Lifting the earpiece and mic towards her Ella answered the beeps.

"Hey Ella, it's Maddie. The rest of the group is already back home and we got a crap ton of food. We should be set for at least 3 months." Maddie said.

"That's great Maddie, im glad the mission was successful." Ella responded.

"Has it ever failed? Oh, wait sorry don't...don't answer that. Anyways Ella where are you?"

"I'm underground I think. I will be back soon, so just give the food to the correct places and hang tight."

"Alright Ella just don't do anymore stupid stunts. We don't want to lose another leader."

Ella heard Maddie hang up on the other end. Ella sighed, she still had no idea how she was going to her back to the Caverns from where she was, and she still needed to find Sentinel. So Ella struggled to a standing position and looked at the boy practicing. "Hey I know this is on short notice but, that boy I was with? Yeah I need to find him. Could you help me get to the surface? Or possibly wherever he went?"

Sentinel saw how much trouble Barry was having standing. He reached down and pulled Barry's arm over his shoulder, acting as a crutch. "There is only one place I can think of that might help you out, at least temporarily. It will take some time, but you will be out of the streets, at least. What's your name anyway? I'm known as Sentinel."

(Dialogue will be RED to distinguish from all else.)

Damion roamed around New York as usual. He had no reason not to and no qualms with doing so; he figured he would find something interesting if he kept going, but nothing had caught his eye recently. He had nothing fascinating to do since his apartment building was burned down and lived in a drifting boredom ever since. It was a pitiful existence, yes, but it was all he could manage if he wanted to avoid human animosity. He continued to drift through the air, a large conglomeration of paper in a typhoon through the sky near the skyscrapers of the city. There was not a care in the world... not anymore, at least.

He kept going awhile until he began to hear police sirens in the distance. He thought perhaps that this would be interesting, but kept his hopes low as not to be disappointed, should it be contrary to his expectations. When he neared the sirens, he was washed over by a flood of red and blue light; he wondered why such a large portion of the LAPD, and a scarcity of military mutant units, were focused in once central point of the city, which had little significance otherwise. He caught sight of a small group of people, most likely mutants from their appearance, and figured they were in distress, considering the situation before them. They were standing around a manhole, and the sewer stench rose up to him as they opened it. They must be quite resourceful to be using such means of transportation. The sewer system ran through the entire city, and if you knew where you were going, they were an invaluable tool of safety.

Damion craved to approach them, but would have attracted the undue attention of the government's lapdogs, so he swiftly went around, moving more conspicuously, but not wanting the little squad of mutants to get away before he involved himself. He checked his attire while he moved, and figured he might need a little extra padding if he was going up against mutants like him. One of them seemed to be able to control metal, another in control of and another was able to disappear entirely; he speculated that this was not actually the case, but refrained from ruling out the possibility. As he approached, he noticed they were conversing about the police and how one of them was killing them, and another explaining to him the futility in doing so. Damion cared little for such antics as they were usually equally futile to speak about. He had no issues with killing the scum of the earth who blindly follow the orders of their superiors, in fact, he enjoyed it to an extent. He supposed these thoughts were simply his dislike to the government who took his last and only little sister from him. Indirectly as it was, they were still the cause of it. However, Damion had moved beyond such loathing and resentment.

He slowed down to regain his stealth factor and hovered to a platform nearby to the mutants, where he landed and reformed the paper used for flight back to his clothing to strengthen it accordingly should a battle initiate. They seemed to not notice him, so he decided he would speak first. He heard a familiar name from the man with metal powers, Sentinel, was it? He had heard the name many times before, mostly among young mutants who romanticized the feats of this person. And another, Vittra, someone he had seen in action once before, but never truly cared to strongly remember. So the power he saw was Mist Walker, the ability to travel through the debris in the air.

"Sentinel. I've heard that name before. The metal user, correct?" Damion suddenly announced to them. He was crouched on the platform above them, unconsciously amplifying his appearance as an Assassin or Ninja. It was never an intention of his to display himself in such a manner, it was just natural for him considering his solemn and cold personality. Even his clothing was simply fashioned in the attempt of self-comfort and combat efficiency, as it was incredibly protective in battles of any kind, aside from Katie's old scarf which did little to protect him physically, but the emotional value in it aided to preserve his mental stability.

When Barry had managed to look straight at her, Valerie snuck as quietly as she possibly could to the side. Somehow she felt very uncomfortable in the middle of his gaze. She didn't speak for a few moments, but listened intently to the two as the debated over what was right or wrong. They had, of course, shot down her arguments. Perhaps they were right? She wasn't really in any trouble despite being a mutant, and neither did she help their cause very much by doing petty crime. She felt awkwardly ashamed, but was still adamant in her conviction that a more civilized method than killing would be better if mutants would ever be anything but second class citizens.

As she stood there she noticed movement out of the corner of her eye – it was Conner! So you're back huh? She was about to say it out loud, but didn't, as it might endanger him. For some reason she still saw Conner as her ally, and had a harder time trusting the two others. Therefore, when Conner turned back Valerie decided to follow him. But not instantly, first she had to make some sort of closure in the debate with Sentinel and Barry.

Valerie was just about to speak up again, but the first breath of her planned words didn't even carry past her lips before she was interrupted by a voice from somewhere above. "Sentinel. I've heard that before. The metal user, correct?" said the voice. Valerie came to a halt, looking up in an attempt to identify the source of the new voice.

@Shog @mikaluvkitties @Jabrark @rapjack123

Barry looked at Sentinal as he told him his name. "Mine's Barry...but I prefer the name Outbreak," he responded. Barry never liked being called by his original name. It brought him, painfully, the memories from before the Core hit. He felt those were dull days where he never really had a life to live. After being held by the government, they code named him Outbreak because of his ability to control disease. When he broke out, Barry set out for a new life. One that he felt would bring justice for all the mutants that were taken by the government and used as weapons of war and other things similar. Barry despised the government so much he seethed with hatred for them. He didn't care if it showed either. Barry snapped out of it once he stood, letting a fair amount of wait on Sentinel but doing his best not to burden him. He looked at him and asked, "Where are we headed?"

He then heard the girl he was debating with look over at someone else. He was intrigued. Then he remembered. He might be the guy Sentinel was talking with earlier. The one that was involved with the government. Barry tensed up immediately. He held an aura of deadly caution, like one a cornered animal. Then he heard another voice, from above this time. He looked up and saw a man watching them. He mentioned Sentinel. Does he know him? What if he's part of the government too? No...if that was true then he would've been more worried about me. The rep I have in the military is among the most notorious of all the mutants. He would've been more at tentative to me...so I'm good. But I still don't want to be caught off guard by that other guy. He thought. Barry soon shifted his back to where the girl might be standing, carefully watching to see if anyone would come around from the corner. He was waiting for that government guy to show himself.

"I suppose there's no other Sentinel among mutants in the area; it was a foolish question," Damion elaborated, "So what's a rag-tag group of mutants like yourselves doing in a place surrounded by officers of the law? You're not doing anything illegal, are you?" Damion always had a twisted sense of humor after Rachael's death, but he kept it hidden from others to avoid disturbing his daily relationships. After Katie's death, he found himself able to release it to his heart's content. Even now, in such a dangerous situation, he joked around sadistically like nothing was going on.

He recognized the head of one of the mutants in the group, being hoisted up by Sentinel, a young man with rascally blonde hair and a ragged dark green hoodie. He had seen him before, but where? Once seeing his face as he turned around, he recalled seeing it at the government center where he was detained for cataloging. His photo was among their most wanted list, he remembered seeing the name "Outbreak" which was somewhere near the top of the list, if Damion remembered correctly.

"Spare me the dirty looks, I'm not a part of those bureaucratic dogs, I'm what most would call a... drifter. But I do try to help people when necessary," Damion corrected. He noted that Outbreak looked particularly frightened by his sudden appearance, most likely under the suspicion he, himself just alleviated. Damion had little to fear from this group of mutants, and they had nothing to fear from him, unless they attacked him. He noticed the Government crest on the one who came back through the manhole, and noticed that the Mist Walker was comfortable with him. Damion had little use for the cataloged names of mutants, so simply used the names of their abilities, or if available, some sort of substitute. Whatever they wished to be called, he was obliged to call them, but if they left it to his discretion, he would fall back on their ability name. Most of the time, they fit better than their cataloged names.

Damion completely forgot about his cataloged name, and was never called it again, not even by the men who assigned it to him. It was as if it had been erased from their database as soon as they forged it. He was somewhat regretful of this, but cared little for it either way. He focused his attention to the group before him, peering deeply into them through his paper mask.

@Shog @mikaluvkitties @Wavebird @rapjack123

Sentinel sighed and looked at the paper mask with his metal one. "I at least tried to stay low key. I suppose that didn't work out very well. Anyway, I didn't do anything wrong. Unless you ask random voice, that is. Nice mask, by the way. I like mine better, but it's not a competition." He helped Outbreak down the tunnel, walking away from the others. "Oh, and tell military person I said hi and to work on his stealth." He called back. "So, Outbreak. That's an interesting name. I can't tell you where we are going, but you will see soon enough." he left it at that and thought about the rest of the group in the supply run. 'I wonder where Ella is now?'

@mikaluvkitties @Wavebird @rapjack123 (I do not believe Valerie ever actually said Connor's name) @Jabrark

(@Shog I'd already taken note of that. I never mentioned his name to begin with. (.____.) I never even mentioned Barry's code name either for that matter.) (By the way, what does your mask look like?)

"If it's all the same to you, I think I'll tag along for now. I've got nothing better to do, and my exit strategy has proven itself unusable, considering the surrounding area is still swarming with red and blue lights," Damion offered, jumping smoothly down nearby, speaking after reaching the innards of the sewers. He refrained from revealing his power to them, in case any of them had a power which could ably counter his own. He made sure he kept his power under wraps, having almost a hundred paper shuriken ready, folded over an infinite amount of times concealing them over his arms, and a similiarly prepared ninjatō along his back in a sheath and a carefully attached kusarigama on his right thigh, all made entirely of reinforced paper. He was self-trained in their use after Katie's death, and used them frequently.

Despite being notably deadly and combat efficient, they were remarkably fragile, shattering after a single battle, sometimes single use, needing to be remade, and forcing him to prepare them in bulk before battle. They were paper, after all. His weapons were always like that, but they suited his immediate purposes and were easy, if not tedious, to make. Damion prepared his weapons well in advance should situations such as this arise, all in the attempt to hide his power from others, especially military forces. Come to think of it, there was still the soldier mutant among them, and Damion's curiosity got the better of him.

"I don't think I've ever worked with a mutant soldier from the military before. They're usually chasing or attacking me, usually both. I wonder, what could you have possibly been through for you to associate with the sh*t of the earth, ruling over common infantry units like mere throwing knives? Even some infantry units are scum of equal worth to your rock bottom superiors; those who follow orders blindly, imprisoning their fellow mutants like they were tools, equally as machine as their own generals make their subordinates out to be," Damion explained to the soldier, rather heartlessly. He cared little for the feelings of the soldier and held little consideration for his emotions because anyone associated with the military was undeserving of such a luxury.

Damion had a deep disdain for the military for their methods of quarantine against mutants and contenders alike, forcing those yearning for freedom to live like cockroaches, feeding off of their own despair and living in the excrement of humanity as so many were forced to do. They took everything away from Katie and Damion, leaving them for dead in a world filled with hate, while they struggled to survive everyday because of the military's campaigns to contain and enslave their kind. They kept taking and taking from them until there was nothing left to take, except their lives, claiming Katie's in the process, along with Damion's soul. Katie was all he had in the world, all he cared about in the world, all he loved in the world, and they stole her from him. Katie held his soul and mind in the palm of her hand, and it was all taken with her. Now Damion had nothing left besides an eternal chasm in his heart where he has fallen into despair and grown a craving for something to fill it. Even now, he seeks a plug for this hole in his heart, but even he himself realizes its crushing futility.

''Oh you mean the wierd guy who first told me to help you then ran somewhere else to do who knows what? Yeah I can take you to him'' said Byron on an ironic tone, although he was actually serious about it. ''Follow me, then'' he continued , as he opened a door which led to a few tunnels underground, then he went through the central tunnel. '' We should get to the position your friend was if we go through this tunnel until we get to the surface'' he added.

To be more cautious , Byron put on his mask and the rest of his so-called costume. Now he was in his Chain Snake persona. ''This is just for safety measures, but for the moment call me Chain Snake'' said Byron as he started walking through the tunnel. He considered Ella was just a victim of human simplicity and ignorance, therefore he had no problem helping her.

At Conner's words that Vittra would be ok, she arched a brow. She didn't see Vittra with him anywhere... so... was she actually okay? Erin never really got the chance to check as another person headed into the sewers, effectively distracting her from what she had meant to be doing. Sighing, she decided this was getting over her head... There was a guy down there who, now that Erin thought about it, had murdered some cops... Of course, they had been aiming guns at him first but it was probably for good reason... there was more than one reason that.

"Conner, I'm going home. Vittra will hopefully remember where I live if she wants to come back with me. Otherwise, I'm sure she'll be fine on her own... she's pretty good at taking care of herself. And your invitation is still open as well, for now." Erin added, giving Conner a small msile before waving. "Sorry but I've got a massive job tomorrow and I need to get some sleep before the sun comes up." She said in way of explanation before turning and heading away from the scene.

Seeing so many people with masks had Erin realizing it was actually a very bad idea to keep running around without one, herself. Before she had always hidden so easily from the people she was stalking it was never something she had needed... but now she was realizing that it was much better safe than sorry. Part of her job for tomorrow would definitely be to figure out a way to hide her identity. With that Erin turned and began walking back to her apartment (she would have ran but she didn't want to cause more of a scene).

Something said to Valerie that she couldn't trust neither of these people. The newcomer had jumped down from his platform and it would seem that he was armed, in addition to that he didn't seem to bothered by the mutant that called himself Outbreak, who was a cop-killer, a maniac if you asked Valerie. But the one that really sounded the alarms was Sentinel, for he was the one that seemed to be able to create metal from thin air – a metal that gave off a similar 'scent' as steel. That was enough for him to be the most scary of them in Valeries eyes, even if he otherwise seemed like a decent enough person, really.

When the trio started making their way deeper into the sewers Valerie had an urge to follow, she wanted to see where they were headed. But at the same time, seeing that Conner had again left for the street above ground, she felt a bit scared and lonely. In fact, being colourless often had that effect – inflicting a feeling of loneliness. In the end, she had to gave in and made way towards the man-hole instead, hoping to find Erin and Conner still on the street.

Damion followed the group down the manhole, not completely understanding what was going on, but continuing on anyway. He noticed the Mist Walker glaring oddly, but subtly at Sentinel with little knowledge as to why, but he did not care to pry; there must have been some personal reason why she looked disdainfully, perhaps even fearfully at him. Damion was more concerned with the state Outbreak was brought to. He kept moving along with them in silence, patiently waiting for someone to make conversation, or even discussion, anything to fill him in even partially.
