Fantasy The Pack

Landon had never seen Nate as ferocious as in this moment. The eyes full of anger, his leader turned around to him.

"Allie is not for you to speak of."

He had always called Nate a friend, ever since they had escaped the governments grasp. At this moment though, he was not sure that this was true any longer. The hot breath on his fur, the bared teeth - he couldnt tell if it was just a warning, or if the black wolf was actually fine going further. Against any other one in the pack, he would have answered in the same language. Instead, Landon gave in, submitting and backing up as soon as the leader turned around to Garrett. A late, warning growl was all he granted himself when he was out of reach.

Feeling the urge to not let things end with that, he wanted to add something, just to get things right. But it was Garrett who spoke first.

"Allie... is gone?

It sounded real. Not as if he tried to let it sound like that. Had Landon been wrong? Had it just been a stupid coincidence that they had arrived just after the storm? Had his anger, his pugnacity and his fail made him decide even worse? No. He was a guard after all, it was his role to be ensure that nothing bad happened. But he had failed once, right? He gave both Ty and Garrett a thoughtful look, then turned away before they could see the insecurity in his eyes. Without saying another word, he began moving, catching up to the rest of the pack. Slowly, as if he was unsure he ever wanted to reach them at all.

Tension and despair, those two we're the best words Tyson could describe the air around the four of them. The teen felt out of place a bit, and took that moment after Nate spoke of the burials and Landon had made his exit to walk quickly back to where he'd left Garrett's knapsack when he'd been knocked down and shifted earlier. Scooping it up by the straps with his mouth he returned to Garrett and Nate but didn't stop, merely slowed as he passed them by. Following after Landon he headed towards the rest of the pack, his hope being that he saw more living than dead when he arrived.

It wasn't what he'd expected, his return that is. Ty wasn't a fool, he didn't think they'd be free and happy in the least, but to return to corpses? There was a moment where he wondered if he'd been safer out wandering alone, but snorted the thought away unhappily. Keeping Landon in view but far enough back to be alone as he moved through the snowy forest, occasionally looking back to see if Nate and Garrett we're catching up.

They murdered Allie… we are bringing her, and others for the night. Burial for those worthy will assume in the morning. “

Allie is gone?

Somehow it didn’t register no matter how many times he heard it.
Garrett hoped that Nate might be joking somehow, but when his eyes met those of the grieving alpha he knew it was real. Allie was truly gone …

And my last words to her … my very last words …

He shook his head violently to clear it, but it did little to destroy the lump forming in the back of his throat. All he could think about was that last night before he left. That moment when he had laughed at her worries about him setting off on his own. She had asked him not to go … and he had laughed and waved her off.

I was so stupid …

Bitterness and regret welled up inside of him. The others were walking off to rejoin the pack, but he walked a little ways behind with his eyes focused mainly on the ground. Though he had raged at Landon when the latter insinuated that the incident was his fault, he now felt keenly that the other had not been very far from the mark. He'd hated the cabin for how insecure and open it was, yet he didn't do his part to make it more secure for the others. He'd selfishly gone off on his own with the idea that he was more useful there than with the others. And now ... now he was paying for it with the lives of those who were lost.

Aaymi only nodded as the white wolf spoke to her. She thought that her wolf was the only blessing that the government had given her but if she were going to die she didn't want to die they way they had made her but rather as herself. And like the white wolf had said she could make her own decisions but the government had twisted everything up. Now it was hard to tell what was real and what wasn't.

To her the pack was at fault, because they had left making everything worse for the others that had been left behind or were to become the governments property. But were they really at fault or was the government just making them look bad so everyone there now would hate them? Aaymi shook her head trying to stay focused. After staying there for a bit by herself, she decided that she wasn't ready to die no matter what the government had told her.

Slowly she crawled in the snow, leaving behind a line of blood as she continued to bleed. Every move she made she winced at the pain but urged herself to move forward. The government had trusted her to go on her own but now was she really free? Or would the thinking of killing the pack come back into play. Quickly she pushed the thoughts away as she focused more on getting to that building.

Nate shifted back into his human form, which held quite a bit of wounds. Including his right wrist that was slightly swollen and bruised. He slowly approaches the front of the pack, eyes of his subordinates were on him. He carefully kneels beside Allie's corpse. Scooping her up into his arms, before he carefully continues forward. The pack follows behind Nate willingly, glad to be back on the move. Farther away from three battle ground.

Nate took the lead once again, the others following quite close behind. Landon made sure to pass most of them. As he had predicted, other scouts had joined them while he had been at the back. Every single one a danger – however, the leader had made a decision, and he didn’t seem to be in the mood to take advice. Instead of pushing his luck too far once more, he simply took his place at the right forefront of the pack, grumbling quietly without an obvious reason. Nate had ordered Landon to be at the front, and it was not on him to disobey his instructions. He avoided the look of the leader, though, instead starring into the wilderness ahead.

Landon almost hoped that someone or something would appear right there, preferably someone who was clearly a foe. The guard certainly felt the urge to just do his work and rip an enemy apart, without all these thoughts, suspicions or disputes. Things had been easier when they seemingly had been secure. Well, it had been on him to preserve exactly that simplicity, and surely he had failed quite hard at it. The corpse on his leader’s shoulders was more proof of that than anything else. His grumble became louder, right until he jumped off forwards to run ahead. The earlier he found something to kill, the better.

Tyson took his spot at the back of the pack as ordered, his curly tail limp and low as they moved through the area. The canine was trying to focus on his position, being at the flank meant they would most likely be the first to hear, smell, or see anything coming up from the direction of the cabin. It also meant they'd be the first ones hit, and he knew he couldn't let his guard down. But his mind was restless after what had gone down at the quarry, and knowledge of what the pack's status was now.

Glancing in Garrett's direction he huffed before slowly changing course so that the two would be alongside each other. Speaking soft and low, "Sorry if my big mouth made things more difficult and....sorry." In general. The look on the wolf's face as he stared blankly at the ground said a lot and momentarily Ty felt that apologizing now wasn't necessary.

"Uh, I'm the one I should be sorry. It's kinda ... my own fault. I got antsy and walked out when I shoulda just toughed it out. Though half of me wants to shut Landon up, I can't help but acknowledge some truth to his words."

There was another brief pause before the man shook his head.

"
I'll be fine. Let's just stick to watching the rear."

His hand came up and lightly touched Ty's shoulder before moving on. His body carried him forward with a loping grace until the surviving pack members and Nate came into view. The dark eyes scanned them all before looking behind them at the now desolate looking woods.

Things are going to get a whole lot more difficult from now on.

As Nate began to lead the pack off, Garrett remained a bit behind. He wanted to make sure they were not being followed and that everyone was present and accounted for. Sending Ty ahead, he walked back down the trail a ways before coming to a halt. The snow was coming down harder now and making things a bit more difficult to see. Kneeling down, he studied the tracks and noted with some satisfaction that they were filling in nicely. But there was something bothering him ... Though it was faint, there was a smell in the air of blood ...

@Cyber Wolf @Xx-Katherine-xX @Shirayuri [And I've forgotten everyone else. Sorry if you're still in and I missed you.]

(Small time skip)

The pack walked until nearly midnight, the moon dazzled high into the sky. He slowed to a halt. "We will sleep here tonight." He called to the pack, a large cave that was sheltered from the snow with massive veins and leaves.

Nate carefully pushed himself inside, it was better than being out in the snow. Slightly warmer, no snow inside. The ground was quite dry, and didn't smell of any animals. He slowly set Allie down in the deepest, darkest corner of the cave. Before he looks at the rest of the pack as they begin to come inside. He shakes out the snow from his black hair, and looks toward Ty, and Garrett. The guard seemed to be mourning over Aliee, and a sad sigh escaped him.

As he had been instructed to, Laikas joined the back of the pack, glancing behind himself occasionally to see if they were being followed. He'd spotted no one. He shook off his fur and glanced back at the rest of his pack, everyone seemed to be gloomy and deathly silent. Laikas had obviously missed something very important but he honestly didn't care; he had purposefully distanced himself from the other wolves to avoid feeling like they felt to make it easier for him if they'd died.

He had stayed in his wolf form, carrying the bag in his mouth, padding along quietly and generally avoiding conversation. Night fell quickly, and the moon rose to take the sun's place. The white-furred wolf would have grinned if he had been in his human form, he appreciated the moon so much more since the government had gifted him with this form. Once midnight came Nate spotted a cave, and Laikas followed the pack to the mouth of it. He glanced at all of them, not exactly feeling tired and lead down in front of the cave's mouth. He glanced back at all of them, he wasn't without sympathy but they should not have mourned the dead so soon in his opinion.

Lowering his head, he glanced back out to the wilderness and let out a sigh, hoping that Aaymi would find the strength to live through the injuries Nate had given her. Had he been a bit excessive in his defense? Maybe. Laikas was torn at this point.

The day passed in a blur. The ashen-grey clouds grew darker and darker until finally around sunset the winds picked up and pushed them from view. Shortly thereafter, the moon rose and bathed all of them in a gentle light. But the pack had no time to marvel in its beauty as they continued to push themselves over the rugged terrain. Finally, sometime around midnight, Nate finally called a halt so that they could rest. Garrett trudged inside along with the others, but he had no intention of sleeping. Instead, he settled himself down in the entrance and unslung the gun from his back. Without a word, he proceeded to disassemble it to check the parts to make sure everything was in order. The parts would be separated and scattered about him as he cautiously checked the instrument over and over again for spots of rust. Naturally, it wasn’t the condition of the firearm that interested him so much as it was a distraction from the world around him. Garrett had always been good with his hands; there was something familiar in it from his government days as a tracker that just made it feel right. When he finished and had nothing more to check, he slowly reassembled it and cast the weapon forlornly to one side, his dark eyes sweeping the cavern, passing the area where Nate and Allie … well, her corpse … was before looking out to the empty forest below. He had every intention of settling there on duty for the night since they were now many members short.

Pulling his knees up to his chest for warmth, he huddled over and let only his eyes move, sweeping the tree line for anything and everything that moved. He was still thinking somewhat about that scent of blood he encountered back in the forest. He’d thought of going ahead to discover what it was … before he remembered Landon’s accusations. The thought that he might be absent for anything else and receiving more finger pointing in his direction stilled his approach. Regretfully, the fighter had turned on his heels and caught up with Ty a short few minutes after. Even though he’d been preoccupied by other matters, his thoughts still kept coming back to it … as well as the thing he didn’t want to think about. After some time of silence, he muttered tonelessly to the others:

There are extra supplies in my pack if you all want them. I don’t care.

As he turned back around to the front, his eyes found those of Laikas. He'd remembered that the other had also been trailing for most of the day ... and also looked preoccupied with other thoughts.

May had followed Nate inside, before sitting against the wall of the cave. She was rather young, and quite fragile looking. She scooted closer to Garrett after awhile, half in a desire for warmth, half in the desire to feel protected. She was a hunter, and quite a good one to be exact, yet she couldn't fight. She wouldnt. She was so innocent and gentle. She looks toward Garrrett, and then to Ty. "Where did you find him?" She asks softly, her gaze still on the Akita shifter. She pale blue eyes and dark brown har framed her face perfectly, her cheeks a soft rosy color, and the splash of freckles across her nose was barely visable yet she hated them. She was short, and slender. She often gave her food to the others, to feed them instead if herself. She was simply that type of generous. @Whisker

The words were scarcely out of his mouth before he felt a weight curl in at his side. Though he didn’t stop gazing out at the forest below, the scent told him it was one of the hunters. He could feel her just touching the outer layer of the bomber jacket that he wore, but she came no closer to him than that.

Where did you find him?

His eyes flickered from the forest and briefly landed on hers so as to figure out what she meant. As he followed her gaze to the Akita, Garrett grunted thoughtfully.

About 2-3 miles south of the cabin. I had left a scent trail to find my way back from scouting. I was following it home when I heard him whine. I jumped into cover behind a snowbank and watched him pass with my gun trained on him. Then when I ascertained he wasn’t a threat to me, I talked to him. We didn’t speak for long before I heard … Nate howl.

There was a grim pause as he looked out towards the forest again. He was aware that there were a few others nearby such as the pale wolf across from him who were probably listening in. He didn't care very much though as the story was likely to get out anyways.

His name is Ty.

[About all I can get up before work. I'll see you guys later on.]

May had trained her gaze onto Garrett, her eyes were slightly mourning, yet still carried a spark of hope. She sighed softly, her breath white with condensation. Her scent was different than most, as she was one of Allie's closest friends, and often envied the beautiful female for getting to even socialize with Garrett. She smelt familiar to Allie, except she enjoyed to sleep in honeysuckle, giving her a sweet, tender scent that clung to her pale fur.

She brought her legs up, pressing them against her chest, similar to what Garrett was doing. She didn't dare speak of Allie, not with the wound of their fallen friend still fresh. It would hurt too much, and she didn't want Nate or Garrett to lash out at her, so she remained silent on that subject.

"He's so different from us." She says softly. "I have never seen his type of dog. Only our type. Wolves and foxes." Her voice was soft, and delicate, like her. @Whisker @Crono

In comparison to the morning, the rest of the day had passed rather uneventful - as if it wanted to give them all the time in the world to think about every single thing that had gone wrong. The moon had long conquered the sky when they finally stopped their escape, at least for today. Nate had found a cave that was big enough to provide the whole pack shelter over the night. However, it took Landon only a few moments to realize that he was not going to find rest between the others. Every single place to lie down smelled of death. Every spoken sentence seemed like it was only formulated to not speak about the happenings, or Allie. Nate had claimed the deepest part of the cave for Allie, and Landon did not feel the urge to settle down close to him – it was better to leave the leader alone than to risk his fury. On the other hand, Garrett had taken a place close to the entry, and probably was not too eager to have Landon nearby. In fact, he had already found the company of May and a few others that were less concerned about him then the guard himself.

On the spur of the moment, he came to a decision, slowly making his way back out of the cave without giving anyone inside a second look. A couple of steps away from the entrance, a rather ancient looking tree leaned against some kind of rock, forming a protection from at least two sides against the weather. A good place to keep guard, he decided, laying down there and putting down his head onto his paws. The cold wind bit into the wounds he had suffered, the snow under him made him as uncomfortable as the rock in his back. And over him a few stars had broken through the days clouds, glancing down at him as if nothing had happened. But at least, he felt able to take a breath without anyone else gazing at him with a look full of reproach – one blaming voice inside his head was enough.

When the pack had found the cave Tyson slid inside and found a tiny little corner halfway through the cave to huddle into with barely enough room for half of his form. The canine had been attempting to fidget in deeper when he'd heard Garrett speak of his pack and if a dog could blush he would have been, realizing he still held Garrett's pack he quickly trotted over and left it with the older man before moving back to his spot and plopping down.

Ty was utterly exhausted, and since being separated from the others for weeks he'd not had a sleep lasting more of two hours. So once he'd gotten comfortable it hadn't taken long for everything to catch up to the teen. Almost instantly passing out while curled up into a frigid ball, never having meant to fall asleep in the first place.

Sasha was in hyena form she was following the pawprints and scent left from the others, she had missed the battle but heard howling and gunshots from afar earlier but she had managed to miss the battle that happened due to her hunting. She had caught a couple of hares and during the second chase got her foot caught in a beartrap limiting her movement speed. The trap didn't draw much blood or break her foot but it was annoying to have on like a single handcuff locked onto her.

She eventually came to the cave grumbling and laughing "Anyone awake I have prey!" she looked at everyone stuffed into the cave with a lopsided grin the 2 dead hares dangling in her jaws.

May looked up at Sasha, a frown remained on her features. Sasha must not know how many lives were lost during the battle, and laughter didn't budge the sorrow within the cave even a smidgen.

May looks toward Garrett, before resting her face in her knees. She drew slightly closer to Garrett, her skin still cold and she still desired to feel safe.

@Whisker

Nate's dark gaze shifted off of the ground, and onto Sasha. He growled softly within his chest. Laughter was not what the pack needed, prey was though. Could this female not smell the pungent scent of sorrow and death that lingered in the cave like a shroud of sadness? He drags his tail so it curls around his rump softly, watching her intently. He had lost his only sibling, making him quite vicious now. He had already laid into several other pack members, another wouldn't bother the hardy brute.

Sasha dropped the dead hares in their midst knowing that the weaker and the alpha should eat first but would let them decide.Sasha cocked her head noticing the 2 frowning at her and her grin faltered."Why is everyone so gloomy it feels like I stepped into a funeral home, shouldn't you all be happy you're still alive from whatever happened back there?...might as well ask you all what I missed,oh and for someone to get the beartrap off me!" Sasha kicked her back paw outward as if that would loosen it

May sighed softly, before sitting into her knees. She carefully pushes down on the latches on either side of the beartrap, opening it, releasing her ankle. "Be more careful next time."

May bites her lip, "I'd watch what your saying, if i was you, Sasha. They killed Nate's sister..." She whispers, only loud enough for the hyena to hear.

Nate growled louder now, his dark gaze locked on Sasha. The fur between his shoulders begin to quiver, yet he doesn't look to his siblings carcass, that laid beside him.

Sasha looked at the dead wolf near Nate and then looked at May and her paw "Thank you",Sasha began counting the people in the cave and noticed they were indeed missing people she asked about the first name that popped into her mind "Hmm where's Nate at I thought he would be hard to kill...well atleast tell me whoever attacked at the time is dead." Sasha seemed to be talking to herself "I never understood why the government wants us dead so bad after all how much could we really effect them...and the nerve they have to kill the young have they no care for others?" Sasha didn't seem to notice Nate growling at her because she was too busy rambling

Nate scoffs softly. Before stepping out of the shadows.

May slinks back, and against Garrett again. As if Nate would attack anyone.

Nate watches Sasha for a moment, "They want us dead, because we betrayed them, Sasha. They see us as a threat to their empire, the empire that is so delicately held up on needles. The empire that will soon be ours." He had made his decision, and it was a dangerous one.

Murmurs of approval rose among the gathered shifters. "They want us dead, because they know, that if they don't kill us firsty, we'll kill them." He licks his maw slightly, his tail was raised in dominance.

America would be theres. @ManyFaces

Royce couldn't sleep. His past kept coming back to bite him in the butt. How he wished he could wring his uncle's neck at this very second. The man was ruling over his (Royce's) father's pack after the son of a b*tch mauled his father rather than protect him as Henson's right hand man! Royce punched a wall, tears stinging his eyes. 'Royce?' Serena picked her head up from the floor, her paws crossed over one another. 'Royce, please calm down.' She hated when he got like this. "Just leave me alone." Serena growled as he sat back down. "If I ever see that jerk again, I swear..." he didn't even look back at her.

Sasha groaned "Oh right we 'betrayed them' they betrayed us!" Sasha snarled the hair she had bristled as she remembered how little she did and how she was treated by them, she heard his second statement and began laughing "Now why would you want to rule over their kingdom that was built upon their own and others dead bodies why not start our own surely we can be better than them since hmm I don't know THEY HAVE THOUSANDS AND WE HAVE WHAT...10 OR LESS?!" Sasha couldn't see everyone

Nate glared at the female, and bared his fangs. The fur along his back bristled and he raised his tail higher in dominance. He would have no problem attacking a disobedient canine and showing then why he's the leader. "Our powers, against theirs, make them weak. That's why they are after us. They fear us!" He barks at Sasha. More murmurs of approval among the pack. "We rule over them, and show them what it was like for us. What they did to us! We make them ours." He snaps his massive jaws, showing his ivory fangs.

May pressed herself against Garrett, "Sasha, just back down." She growls under her breath.
