Psychie Another good question is, who is the team second in command? Has Deunan been bumped to 2nd Lt, and we now have a 3rd Lt under her, or just a NCO assigned as her second?

Sure. After this much time, we'll have Deunan a 1st Lt. and you can pick someone to be your second in command to be bumped up in rank to 3rd Lt. Do you want to make it Marlon so you can be naughty without being in violation of the UCMJ rules?

In a very serious bit of reflection, the promotion will go to either Gabi or Marlon. I'm just not sure which one would be better, be it a tanker as number two or diversification to have our second be one of our rotorheads.

That will be your call to make. Who do you think is going to be best in the role?

Sherwood If you are going to consider Gabriela, please keep in mind she has done everything she has done because she's basically a Green Beret with a mech. She doesn't think like a tanker nor a T.A.S.C. rotorhead. All the decisions she's made in the field since before she joined Third Heavy Recon comes from what Tac Corp Recon Patrol put into her and if you make her second-in-command, that's not likely to change. She's a different kind of leader than Deunan is.

But if you do that, no (public) dating for Marlon and Deunan. Plus, Deunan is comfortable being a tanker as is Marlon. Marlon is as trustworthy as they come and he's a good fighter for sure, creative and thoughtful. Now would Marlon want leadership? Only good ol' D. can answer that.

Sherwood I suppose I should throw in my credits too! While it doesn't matter much at this point, one of the things he has over Gabi is seniority in Third Heavy. Meaning he is more familiar with the squadmates minds and capabilities as Duenans methods. He is a pretty grounded guy, likes to approach things cautiously and methodically. He is keen on making sure the others look well and likes to make sure everyone is in good order. Is a hard worker and is happy to take on extra responsibilities. Has shown he is quick to fall in line and follow orders so can be trusted to see things out to the best of his ability. Even now one of his main goals is to make sure that things are well in the squad so Duenan wont get dumped on by the Captain, even if it means checking over Hobbes work. While he is glad to have a dedicated engineering crew for the squad, if things arent perfect, he knows where the Captain will lay the blame.

That said! Marlon isnt going to want to get Duenan in trouble, even if she doesn't like it. Especially in this more friction laced environment under the Captain. Even if they had a prior relationship, the appearance of impropriety is just as bad as impropriety itself. Marlon won't let Duenan stoop to nepotism, and will turn down the promotion if he is picked for any other reason than she feels he is the best man for the job. Even if it means he has to turn down a budding relationship or a chance at naughty. A cold shower isnt so bad, after you get used to them. Not only to keep Duenan out of trouble, but to make sure the squad doesn't have to deal with the fallout from the Captain.

As for commendations of Gabi. She has definitely gone to show she is willing to go above and beyond to help give their equipment a better edge. And while she has broken rank, it does show she has the initiative for leadership. As well, a second being a chopper, it would make it easier to split their forces as need be. And give her possible authority for air strikes.

If Deunan's gotten 2 promotions in the six month timeframe, who's to say the rest of the Third heavy couldn't make officer as well? We all have the IQ for it in modern military standards.

As for a second in command, I'll throw in the bystander's perspective. Alan doesn't have a problem with anyone on the squad, only a distrust of the upper levels of chain of command (mostly at how Anton-17 was handled). All he really cares about is getting everyone home in one piece and doing a good job. Marlon and Gabi are his friends and I expect he'd get along with them about as well as they always had.

In light of the Captain's attitude though, he'd probably have to drop a lot of the casual friendliness he'd preferred in the past, at least in front of the captain. So a lot less "Roger boss" and more "yes ma'am". Pesky recording devices would likely be plumbed for disciplinary action fodder anyway.

Though that said! I figure I might add that one wouldnt have to be an Lt to be given an officer rank to be a second to Duenan. Can still be an NCO if you want to play on military drama for a relationship. Or an Lt for another reason for the Captain to hate us :p

Also, depending in if we count as a platoon (given our status as armor), a Platoon Sgt or higher Sergeant, like First Class, could probably produce the same effect without having two LTs on the squad.

I believe rank promotions are not necessary for a military leader to choose his or her second; the second must be at least the rank of those he or she intends to lead. At least in official capacity.

Here is what I mean by that. Groups of military people who rely on each other for life and death often do what is best for the group. If that includes making someone second in command who is not of an official rank (say, a very-experienced corporal leading new sergeants into an area of operation until they are "broken in"), I can well-imagine an unorthodox platoon doing just that, and keeping the entire matter off the books.

The first place Gabriela went looking for answers was inside her own genius-level and insatiably-curious brain. What had her mother told her about other alien life? Who could this be? As an engineer, what had she learned about alien spacecraft?

Inconspicuously, Gabi moved to Neo's side. As someone else of alien blood, Neo might have insight too. "What are you thinking, amiga?"

After hearing her teammates' reply, Gabriela raised her hand to get the captain's attention. "What are our Zentraedi and Meltrandi allies saying about it, sir?" When in doubt about aliens, Gabi thought, ask other aliens!

Hmm. I suppose I should ask another way. Psychie Might any of us with Zentraedi/Meltrandi parents have passed anything on to us concerning this new threat? If so, Gabi, being an engineer, would have likely asked what other would-be enemies of Earth looked like. How about any RDF or ASC Zentraedi or Meltrandi?

We will go ahead and stick you with the NCO rank of Master Sergeant. It makes more sense to me to have only one officer in a small squad this size.
