Heya friends! Kaerri and I are in Hurricane Dorian's path at the moment and we are as prepared as we can be. In the days ahead we may go dark for a while, but we'll be back on as soon as we can. Whatever happens, we'll be together which is just where we want to be. Stay healthy and happy, everyone!

Honor and fun,
Dann =)

Chain of command notwithstanding, I vote we check out whatever those battle pods were guarding. If it's our passageway great, if not, we go hunt us some MPA goons.

Hey Rykon Rykon ? I'm having trouble with the way you used the word "notwithstanding." Like Illya's constant use of the word 'would' in conditional tense (which I've let go and stopped trying to figure it out), I am thrown off as to your meaning here.

Do you mean, "Regardless of what chain command says..." or something else?

No, I meant to convey the idea that "in spite of the fact we don't get a vote, because we are outranked, my vote is..."

Well, if you guys want I can continue to have Gabi use her drone to look ahead and see what it can tell us instead of us risking ourselves? This Captain Sykes probably doesn't even know we have one. =)

First group is Ryuko, Marlon and myself.

Somehow I see this as wise. You've got an Ajax and two Spartases, plus the two people most likely to argue right under their squad leader! Very good! =)

Psychie Psychie What kind of mech is Neo in?

Yes, but Psychie did mention some weeks ago that Neo might shift to a Myrmidon so our team wasn't overpowered?

On a separate note, if we get blown up I'm sorry lol. Marlon might need glasses soon.

When Duenans group stops for Group 2 to leapfrog past, Marlon will look around agaon. Unless Psychie Psychie wishes that roll to count as for the running and the stop.

"Maroon kept his eyes peeled in looking forward an around..."
(ellipsis mine)

"Maroon!" Oh, not only is spellchecker having a good day, it's teaming up with the RP Nation dice roller! On the other hand, the dice roller is being very nice to us in another game entirely. =)

Lol yes, such is the cost of doing everything from my phone. With a small window to work with, I tend to miss them.

Ah yes, the grace of RNGeezus is as fickle as its domain.

Wouldmt have it any other way.

Hooray! (I mean, boo for WlfSamurai not posting in some time, but hooray that Neo gets a big gun like the rest of us!)

He would peek over and take a good look at trap. To look for the trigger mechanism, which obviously appeared to be the wire. But also to see if there were any secondary triggers.

As well, one of the more important things was how to go about disarming it. To see what sort of explosives, how many, and how large. And if it would be wiser to disarm them in the destroid or on foot. Though with enough explosives to collapse the cave, being in destroid would certainly be safer... but it also meant that it would be easier to trigger the trap. And if they were zeek sized explosives, being on foot would mean it would be a little more difficult to work with things so large. Also... if this was a main entrance then the zeeks had an easy way of bypassing it. A safe spot, if you will.

He would take the approach his judgement would determine best depending on his observations, and once he lowered himself down safely. He would check around once more before disarming the explosives if everything looked in the clear.

D. Rex D. Rex I apologize for asking this, but please don't join the "would" bandwagon and just state Marlon did or did not do? As written, this odd brain of mine has honest and serious trouble figuring out what your character is actually doing. I'm not saying "please don't use the word 'would.'" I'm asking that you tell us what he did. Consider, "He peeked over..." "He took the the approach his judgment would determine..." "He checked around once more..."

It's all because of the condition-based timing of the sentence. "Would" when used that way is conditional. As an example, "I would do this if he did that." - I can understand this! There is an if/then correlation that makes sense. However, "I would throw the grenade at the oncoming Zentraedi." Okay... my mind immediately thinks did you or didn't you? And it doesn't stop there. Were you waiting for the oncoming Zentraedi to do something first like cross some line of defense? Are you waiting for a command from Sgt. Conway? Under what circumstances do you or do you not throw the damned thing? That's what this odd brain of mine goes through whenever I read sentences like those. Sorry to sound like the Grammar Police, but it's not something I can easily control.

Please? It's bad enough Illiya won't stop doing it; it's gotten to the point that when I see it in his posts (which I'm sure are otherwise good!), I just read Ryuko's spoken words and try to grasp the rest from context. But if more people in our RP group start up with this, then I... (had probably best leave that thought unfinished).

Based on the community I came from, people use language like "would" to give room for interruption, like if the ST has another surprise that derails the action. It's a natural aversion to presuming success, even in minor things like approaching the pit. I get it's a pet peeve, but there is a legitimate reason for it in some RP circles. It can also be a hard habit to break.

EDIT: On that note, I've been trying to use more active voice over passive. I understand how hard speaking/writing habits are to break.

Rykon, I wish it were just a pet peeve, buddy. Instead, it's something my neurodevelopmental disorder sometimes has serious trouble making any sense of (and has since I was born), and sometimes it sets off a chain of events of sorts in my brain. Sorry to have to even bring this up.

Would you tell me if this game is somehow becoming one of those RP circles where it's becoming legitimate?

I'll try to refrain from doing so, for you, Dannigan. But I cant make any promises it wont slip my mind.

A lot of my habit behind it comes from what Rykon brought up. And to give enough wiggle room for the GM in longer sequences of actions in case GM decided to have a zeek pop up and shoot Marlon in the face as he got closer to the pit.

I understand it bothers you, and I certainly dont wish to do that. Lol I got my own things that bother me like that. But I do have my own writing style that comes naturally to me.

I like you Dannigan, so I'll try to make it better for you. But you'll have to put up with me for a bit so I can ween myself away from doing that.

Purr Purr
I don't think it'll be a huge issue here. The place I really got started in was in a live (if small scale) video game RPG. Many of the folks there were skewed younger, very antagonistic, and PVP minded, so the 'social contract' of do's and don'ts has a very different foundation than it does here.

EDIT: Just wanted to note, those games also didn't have a ST to arbitrate the rules of gameplay. Administrators/Moderators were not well-liked either, yet their positions were coveted for vain reasons.

D. Rex D. Rex Thank you, D. Rex! All I ask is that you try. Even if you don't succeed at it, you're worth benefit of the doubt because I know you're making the attempt. That means a lot to me. I like you too; you're good people. I don't think I would have brought this up at all except that I think Hurricane Dorian here and my own sensitivities have combined to have a good time with me today and not to my benefit. I'm unusually sensitive today. I still don't entirely understand what Marlon is doing (besides disarming the explosives per Psychie's post; I never have problems reading her writing). =)

D., If there is anything in my personality or writing style that irks you, please let me know and I'll make attempts to do what I can too. =)

Rykon Rykon I'm so glad to hear that! Times like these, I kind of need someone else to spell out what everyone else seems to automatically understand. I'd like to say this will go away, but it's incurable so, though it has its good sides, I'm still stuck with it. Thanks for helping me make sense of it.

As for the video game RPG scenes, I can relate. I have bailed out of enough such places to have learned what I like and don't like. Younger players I certainly don't mind; it's attitude that matters to me. Glad you came to RP Nation!
