Ya, can't blame the shows though, blame the networks. Most gems are removed because of something called The Spongebob Effect.

If the show isn't a start at the beginning, they'll play it a bit, move schedules around, lower the budget, put it on a secondary channel, then release the last episodes online.

Ya, sadly most passion projects are forced to just be thrown away because in the eyes of companies, if it doesn't sell, it's not worth making

But there is another side to it. Animation is a expensive project, especially with stuff like anime so if the project fails, it can be quite a bargain to keep it going.

However, back to the other side.

With people like Viacom, you must sign something that states, you get nothing from merchandise. So all that stuff that should count as theirs doesn't give them a cent. And Viacom is known to rip down videos, even if the stuff is under fair use :|
