After sending the text message, David tried opening the door and found it unlocked. The keys were already in the ignition, Jess probably put it there for the sake of convenience. It would've been quite the hassle and a waste of time for him to go up again just to get the key. He then climbed in, seating himself at the passenger side of the car. David was hoping he wasn't the only one left, he didn't want to drive during night. What he said to Jess before they left, about him not driving well during the night, it was true. He had nearly gotten Cedric and himself into a car accident for driving in the evening once.
They were heading back from a 'party'. No, David wasn't inebriated while he was driving that night. Usually when he attends a party that required for him to drive to, he would take a cab or ride with someone he knows. He could bring his car but he was too lazy to go back the next day to get it. But for that day, David was already with Cedric, they were already on the way back to the university--while David lived in an apartment just outside the university grounds, Cedric lived in a dorm inside the grounds--David already had his car with him. It was all Cedric's fault, really. He suggested that they go to this rad party and David, being David, couldn't resist a party so he turned his car and followed Cedric's directions. As it turned out, the party wasn't really a party but rather a gag set up by Cedric. It was a child's birthday party... set-up for David. On the banner was written 'Happy Birthday David'. It wasn't even David's birthday, it wasn't even anywhere near David's birthday. Needless to say, the blond Frenchman was certainly pissed up at his best friend that evening. Perhaps his anger was a factor to their near accident? David wasn't certain. All he knows is that he wasn't able to see that there was a black car in front of him, not until Cedric was screaming at him to slow down otherwise he would hit the vehicle. In his defense though, the car's rear lights were broken and the lighting in the area was quite poor. Lessons learned: a) he would never let Cedric direct him to a party that he knows nothing about, and b) his bad eyesight made it hard to drive in the night.
David was shaken out of his trip down memory lane by the vibration of his phone, an indication that he had a new message. Jess, he thought as he proceeded to read the new message. He was right, it was Jess. David couldn't help but sigh upon reading through it. So he really was the only one left--well, there was Mira as well, but Jess says she was already on her way. Looks like he had no choice but to drive the thing. He clicked his tongue in annoyance but moved over to the driver's seat regardless. David was hoping he wasn't the only one left, that there was still someone else, someone who could drive instead. He heaved one last sigh before starting up the car. There was no sense in dwelling on it now. With only thirty minutes to make it the venue, David had to drive fast.
He checked the rear view mirror and adjusted it accordingly. Was he really the only one left? Maybe Jess made a mistake--he doubts it, but it was plausible nonetheless. Maybe he should wait for a few more minutes? Not that it would do him any good. After all, Jess already told him to get there quickly--within thirty minutes in fact. He frowned as began to wonder, would thirty minutes be sufficient time for him to get to the venue? David took out his phone from his pocket and checked. Apparently, it was a twenty minute drive and if he drove really fast, David would bet he could get there in fifteen minutes. He could spare a few minutes to wait, just a few minutes. After the someone who looked like they've been invited to the party shows up, then he'll leave. He turned off the car--there was no sense for him to waste its gas, even if the tank was full--and stepped out. David leaned on the side and started waiting. Just five minutes. If no one shows up, then I'll leave.
