It's treated as a singular noun by most, though, not a plural.

What would you say is better:

Mathematics is my best subject.

Or

Mathematics are my best subjects.

A lot of people, British or American, would say the first sentence sounds more natural than the second, which is why I say it's treated as a singular noun despite the 's' at the end. So math, without the 's, ' makes more sense grammatically.

Or so the argument goes.

English is practically a Google Doc shared by anyone that speaks English. Pretty inconsistent at times (to the point that it drives me crazy - especially possessive nouns that have "s" behind them), but it's gotten us thus far, so anything goes, as long as it works. Lulz.

English is what happens when you jump a bunch of other languages in a dirty back alley and steal their words/rules until you can form your own and mock the others.

All languages have a bit of that baked into them, to be fair.

By possessive nouns, you mean pronouns like his, hers, theirs, its, yours? Or, like, stuff with apostrophes like "baker's dozen"or "John's bike" or "the twins' mother?"

Good morning! Noyhing better than hanging up some clothes and putting on a wash before breakfast! :D

You better not mention the six counties more than you have already, you'll only risk Irish nationalist Larry comin' out. :O

The apostrophes. Especially names like Davis and what they own.
Singular: Davis' pen / Davis's pen
Plural (multiple Davis members): We visited the Davises place.

I was using this wrong the whole time and tend to just put more s-es and apostrophes. But plural for names ending with "s" is actually with -es.
