Fantasy A Guild of Their Own

Adelia smiled at him. She was grateful for his concern, even if it wasn't necessary. "The scream and the energy blasts are really basic techniques of my magic. They drain very little energy." She could hardly feel the difference between her at her fullest energy and with a small amount gone.

Morgan became lost in thought in an attempt to find the explanation for what happened. "Well, dragon eggs usually only hatch for the right person in the absence of their mother dragon. This means each dragon is linked to a person, and so instead of being its mother, you're the dragons partner. You are its equal."

Carlos finished his meal and let the spell finally wear off. Carlos knew that it was getting late and that Adelia had to get groceries, but he didn't want to make his leave. "So... Um.. You said earlier that you needed to get some things from the market? Would it be rude of me to ask if I could still accompany you? I could be of some use for carrying bags or something." Carlos fumbled with trying to make an excuse for staying.

Some part of Adelia was instructing her not to allow him to accompany her. Isn't it a little odd, you finding him near your home and then him accompanying you this far. Surely he must be from the guild or something. Maybe he's someone here to gain information or distract you whilst others attack. Her mind wouldn't quit spinning these thoughts, like a record that was stuck in a loop. Instead, Adelia silenced them herself. She refused to believe such a gentleman would use her that way. "Of course you may accompany me."  Adelia smiled brightly at Carlos, Truthfully, she didn't know why she trusted him. Perhaps it was to do with the way he opened up to her, or how he had paid her more attention in a day than anyone had in her 18 years of life. "The grocery shopping may take a while, is that okay?"

Carlos laughed a bit, "I'm no stranger to shopping." He stood and stretched. 'Ok. She's not freaked out, She's friendly, and doesn't think you're a magic freak. You have a new friend Carlos. So don't mess it up.'  Carlos offered his hand to help her out of her seat. "So what's the first thing on the list?"

Adelia smiled towards Carlos and accepted the hand. Running through her mental shopping list, Adelia picked out something that was closest to their current location. "Fruit and vegetables." The market stall for that wasn't far, but the quickest route was through other alleyways. She knew they'd have to be careful, especially after their earlier display. "We have to travel via the alleyways, unfortunately."

Carlos gave a uneasy grin, "The allyways?" Carlos knew that the chance of a recurrence of what happened earlier was slim but the thought was still fresh in his mind. 'I can't let fear and anger get to my mind. Bad things happen when that happens,' Carlos walked with Adelia to the inns exit and gave a fake playful smile to hide his worries, "Ok, but let's be more careful this time. Don't wanna send two men to a doctor in the same day." Carlos could have kicked hisself, 'Smooth one man. That wasn't helpful at all!'

Adelia laughed lightly. "I'll send one next time." She smiled at Carlos, as though to reassure him. Adelia knew the alleyways like the back of her hand at this point, and decided she'd take them through the ones in which it was rare to find another person. It kept up her reputation as a hermit, and protected her real identity. "Here, follow me." She started to lead the way to the market.

Carlos follow her closely. He could hear the sound of the town reverberate off the close walls of the ally. "This town sure is lively and clean," he couldn't help but notice that even the dark allies the went through was relatively clean compared to the other places he's visited in his life. "Is that because of the town's guild or something?" He kinda wanted know about the guild. It's was weird to him that the guild looked so large. He's seen other guilds but they were hunting guild or small magic guilds. Not some castle like place.

"The guild is a major thing here. I'm not sure why, it's before my time and I was never taught its history." Adelia shrugged, trying to remember any ounce of information she knew about the Phoenix Guild. "I'm pretty sure they played a huge part in the purge of dragons. They're kind of the law around these parts." She sighed, before biting her lip when she remembered she was in the company of someone who didn't know of the tamers 'guild'. They weren't exactly a guild. They were more of a community than anything. A community forced into hiding.

Carlos nearly tripped over the statement itself,"Wait. Dragon purge? As in the dragons of myth? they," Carlos pointed to the guild, "purged them?" Carlos couldn't help but think back to his book. 'And so the enteral bird extinguished the age of the mighty dragon. The man that lives until time stops stays hidden from the bird of flames. Waiting, guiding, and protecting the last of the dragons.'  'Could it be a book of non fiction?' Carlos' head started to hurt at the very thought. "That'd only be true if dragons and atleast most of the stories about them are.....," Carlos took a moment to chose his next word carefully. "Real?"

"I can't say as I'm as young as you, but my family have passed down stories. I believe dragons and those stories are very much real." Adelia was struggling to keep up the façade at this point, especially with all of Carlos' questions. She hated having to keep her true life a secret, but it was for the safety of her people and the last few remaining dragons.

Carlos felt electric at the thought, "That would be amazing! My Mother always told me about dragons. She'd always read me that book from earlier, and I'd fantasize about them." Carlos couldn't help but at like his geeky self almost bouncing around. "What kinda stories do you know? All I know is the one about the man the never dies that protects the dragons! I'd love to hear yours one day." Carlos hasn't felt this excited in years.

"One day, perhaps." Adelia smiled, loving the enthusiasm radiating off of Carlos. She hoped one day she would have a story to tell. One of the return of dragons and the beginning of a new era, one pioneered by the Tamers. "I can tell you the stories of my ancestors some time." She smiled, before turning out of the final alleyway they had to walk through. "And maybe one day you can tell me your own story."

Carlos froze, 'My Story? My past?,' thoughts began to flood his mind of his own life. A burning town, A quick thought of an unknown attacker, fear, anger, an inhuman skreik, and Carlos crying in terror and rage. 'My story....'  Carlos felt like a whole other person, smile and energy disappearing, shaking from the mere thought of it. "My... Story...," Carlos pushes the thought away. Being quick to repress them once more and trying to recover his previous mood, "My story is a hard on to tell." He gave a fake smile but he could tell that his grief showed in his eyes. "Maybe I'll tell it to you one day when I feel more... Sure.... Of it." He looked around at the market wanting to find a topic to change to. "So what kinda fruits and vegetables do we need to collect?"

Kemelia nodded in understanding. Being equals, partners, made sense. It wouldn't stop the motherly sense she'd probably get now and then, but it put much less weight on her with a title of partner than mother. She set her dragon on the table and rested her head on her arms on the table. The dragon followed and rested its head on the table to be at the same height as Kemelia, looking at her with big amber eyes. Kemelia smiled and chuckled at it's cuteness.

"All sorts." Adelia threw a smile at Carlos, understanding how difficult a past could be. She found the list she had made and handed it to him, having memorised the list at this point. It was always the same sort of thing, and it was fortunate that they all earned enough gold to sustain this way of life. It also helped that she went to merchants that would significantly lower the price for her, and most of them already had what she'd need stored away, waiting for collection. She glanced up at Carlos, trying to gauge his expression. It would be hard to understand why she needed so much food, but maybe one day things would be clearer.

Morgan smiled at Kemelia, relieved she understood that she wasn't the dragon's mother. An important part of raising a dragon was understanding that you were its equal, and the dragon would respect you if you showed it the same courtesy. He watched on as the dragon imitated Kemelia, a bright smile dancing on his features. If only the world could understand... But they don't. His thoughts were towards the day that dragons would no longer be feared, but respected. The thoughts, as always, were accompanied by a small, almost inaudible, sigh.

"You do know the egg came from the Phoenix Guild, right? You do realize what that's mean, right?"

Brutus doesn't need to remind Leopold the ugly side of being immortal. Especially if it came from The Phoenix's own fire and ashes.

"And you do realize what would happen if a Dragon that could heal itself, or return to life even if its head got cut off, fell into the wrong hands, again?"

Kemelia watched her dragon as he copied her head swaying on the table. It's hard to believe this is the kind of dragon that she read about, one that could possibly grow up to kill. Instead it looking like any other baby, besides the wings and claws. It made her wonder what had happened in the past for the sorcerers to kill them. She looked over at Morgan, thinking about asking him that, but stopped herself when she saw his smile had faltered. "Now you're looking glum."

Carlos scanned the list and was shocked at the amount of goods that Adelia needed, "Wow! Are you feeding a small army or something?" Carlos laughed at the thought but quickIy retained himself,"I mean that is a lot of food. Must be for the coming winter, right?" Carlos began to read in more detail. "So apples, barley, carrots, and rice area at the top of the list." He began to look around at the market stalls. A ball of light formed in his hand and he start to toss it up and down, while also making it flow around his forearm. He did this when he was trying to focus. Having a little bit of light around let him think although it did sometimes bring attention from people. Some good; some bad.

"Or something." Adelia breathed quietly, before she began to laugh, a grin on her face. She hummed a small tune, practically dancing around the market stalls to gather some of the things she needed. It was usual for her, a little melody made the trip so much more enjoyable. Looking over at Carlos, she noted he also had a mechanism for focusing. Different to hers, but perhaps it came with their magic.

"Sorry." Morgan shook himself out of the daze he had put himself in, a smile reappearing on his face. "Just thinking. Anyway, have you chosen a name?" He looked at the dragon, admiring its colour.

"You doubt our abilities here still, Brutus. The old council of Elders has been abolished. A new one, of people I can wholeheartedly trust, has been established. You remember the young girl, Adelia? Her parents were two members of that council. Those who managed to escape the fate of old council murdered them." Leopold had a stern look upon his face. It came across as undermining him. He knew what he was doing with the Tamer's, but Brutus had deserted them long ago.

Kemelia looked back at her dragon. A name came with a dragon's secrets. What did that even mean? Especially if it was a baby? Would she see the history of the dragons? Could it possibly be she could see what he saw even in an egg? "Eh, I think I'll leave that for another day, if it's alright." As much as she wanted to know her dragon, the possibility of seeing a type of war and not doing anything was terrifying to her. Besides, the day was overwhelming enough without that.

Carlos follow Adelia as she hummed and scurried around the market. He began collecting the items as she paid. It was strange to him. People usually made him so uneasy but he was surpizing calm. "So Adelia? How....."  Carlos stopped walking, stricken silent. He felt the blood drain from is face as a group of soliders approached, and at their front was the battered man from earlier.

"Here he is brother!" The man stared holes into Carlos. "He's the one who," the man groaned in pain and clutched his stomach. "He's the one that roughed me up!"A soilder stepped forward out of the group and  looked down at Carlos in a mixture of confusion and  disgust, "You're the one?" He looked back at the beaten man, "You let a whelp like this beat you?" He let out a belittling chuckle as he turned back to Carlos. "None the less! You beat a man in my streets and are to be punished for it."

Carlos struggled to remain calm. "Look my fair lawman," Carlos began praying that a silver  tongue was all that he needed, "I do apologize for the ruckus but your brother started the ordeal." He looked to the battered man, "and I may have went too far." Carlos bow his head slightly. "I am truly sorry," he turned his attention back to the mans brother. "I am more than willing to pay a fine and pay for your brothers injuries."

It took very little time for Adelia's ears to tune into the abrupt interruption to their collection. she recognised the voices as being soldiers of the Phoenix Guild. This is my fault... Time to go take care of this again. She swiftly paid for the groceries in her hand and retreated back to Carlos, placing the items into the bag they had.

"Is there a problem sir?" Her face fell upon seeing the man. "Kind sirs, I do apologise for the incident earlier today. This man began to attack me as I took my usual route to the Dragon's Breath Inn." She motioned towards the man who stood at the head of the group. "This kind young man protected me from this brute." Adelia spoke with such authority and clarity even with a soft voice. She often found that she could talk her way out of a large number of situations. On occasion things got violent, but she was praying that this wouldn't be one of those times. As powerful as the pair of them may be, she knew there was no possible way that the pair of them could fight their way through this. Not near the Phoenix Guild for sure.

As a protective measure, Adelia used her power on both of them, enhancing their hearing. She fine tuned it to allow for them to hear any attempt at surprise attacking them. Her hand found it's way to Carlos' wrist, gently gripping it as if to try and help him to stay calm. It was also to pull him back if he tried to attack the soldiers. Eyes were attracted to the commotion, and Adelia was wary of this. Nobody from the town knew of her powers, and she didn't want them to either. They may figure out it was her that fooled them into going a different direction when chasing Kemelia.

Carlos' began to breathe a little easier as Adelia spoke her case but not for long. The wounded man looked to his brother, "Don't take this wench and her dog's word!" He began to wag his finger in Carlos' face, "I know what you are! Some kinda warlock! Usin ya black magic to terrorize common folk!"

Carlos tightened his jaw and felt his blood boil at the insult, but he didn't allow his anger to provoke him. He simply forced a smile for the sake of Adelia. "Black magic? Sir I believe you may have been too deep into your mug of ale. I fought you, that statement is true. As for 'magic' I don't believe such things are real." Carlos sharply ended the sentence as if  he wanted the words to cut though the man.

The mans eyes lit up in anger, "You filth lier!" He turn to his brother, "He's lyin! He turned inta a giant! Then stuck me in the stomach!" The brother raised his hand to silence to man.

The soldier looked to Adelia then to Carlos. All could see the gears of his mind turning, "The fine for disorderly conduct is 10 gold or a night in a cell. As for my brothers injuries?" He looked back at his kin in disappointment, "I'd say he'll live without you payin."

The beaten man was in a frenzy of disbelief, "You can't just let them go like that! I  demand...,"

It was then that the brother finally lost his temperament, "You demand?! I will not have you make a fool of me again!" The soldier towered over the drunkard, "you're always causing trouble your drunkeness! Causing fights and whatnot! And now you want me to believe that this young man is some sort of evil warlock just to satisfy your broken pride?!" The man turned to Carlos and Adelia, "You two are free to go. I  sincerely apologize for this."

Carlos kept hold of Adelia and walked away, "Thank you, sir. Have a plesent evening." The soldiers walked away as well; drunkard in tow. Carlos remained slightly bitter as the pair continued back through the market. He turned his head to Adelia, "Hey..... Thank you.. for coming to my aid."
