Realistic or Modern We'll Get Through This Together

Nicolette looked up and dropped her jaw slightly when she saw the necklace. Taking it slowly, she put it on then looked back up at Aspen. "No it's fine. I shouldn't have said anything," she said quietly.

Aspen breathed a small sigh of relief when she accepted his present. Maybe things weren't as bad as he though. All those worries were probably completely irrational anyway. "No, I shouldn't have run away like that." He paused, then smiled shyly at her. "I'm flattered though."

Tommy watched the interaction between Nikki and Aspen, and smiled to himself. "They would make a cute couple."

He went around the corner and saw Cassie and Issac and stopped. He saw them smiling with the book. He acted like he forgot something and went back around the corner.

" it makes sense... She's smart, she'd want to be with someone smart... Not someone like us..."

Aspen watched her draw, hand gliding across the page bringing an image to life. He wasn't much of an art it himself, but he enjoyed looking at other people's work, imaging the finesse and detail involved in creating something so beautiful. He only stood for a few moments however, before heading back to where he had abandoned his food. He managed to eat much more now that the weight had been lifted off his shoulders and he finished quickly. Sitting quietly by himself feeling content, he marvelled some more at their newfound freedom.

Cassie smiled and nodded, "Yeah, that'd be great. Well, I'm going to go eat something now, so talk to you later." She smiled softly and turned away thinking happily. She found herself fitting in with the group more and more. She went back into the "main room" and set the book done by her stuff then grabbed some of the food she made and looked around. She settled on sitting by Tommy and Kira and ate quietly thinking.

"Alright. Talk to you later. But I think I might grab some food too, I'm famished." he said, his stomach rumbling for emphasis. He headed back to the "Main room", and put the book down near his stuff, before he got up and grabbed some food. He sat back down with his stuff, and thought to himself, smiling, Maybe people aren't so bad after all? He thought, glancing over at Cassie. He began eating his food, which was quite delicious.

Xavier came down from the roof after a while, making a mental map of all the fire escapes and other exits in case of an emergancy. Finding his way back to the main room they occupied actually took him a few minutes, getting lost and frustrated with how every floor had the exact same layout. After having to check every floor for the better part of half an hour, he had one thought. Not fun. He smelled food and smiled happily though, getting a small portion for himself and wandering over to where everyone else was. Sittin on the floor towards a wall, he ate slowly and watched the group, smiling when he realized that all earlier drama had died off and everyone seemed happy.

Tommy looked at Cassie as she sat down, then at her book. "What book you got there ?" He smiled a little to her. He hoped it was a book they read in high school, so he'd at least be able to try and talk about it with her.

Cassie smiled at Tommy and glanced at the book, "It's The Hobbit. Issac lent it to me." She thought for a moment and looked at Tommy, "You like to read at all?" She asked him out of curiousity.

"Oh? Is that based off those movies that are coming out?" He looked at her, "I don't read much..." He blushed a little, "I'm not very good at it." He scratched his head and looked down, embarrassed.

Cassie smiled reassuringly noting his embarrassment. "Oh I see. And yeah, it is." Cassie didn't think less of anyone who didn't read much, so she didn't want him to be embarrassed about it. "You played football right? If it makes you feel any better, I'm not very good at any sport." She looked at him, smiling softly.

He smiled a little. "Yeah, I was pretty good. Coach said I'd be on varsity. Next year." He looked at her for a moment. "What are we going to do about school... I could drop out probably, but the rest of you should go back. I'm the only dumb one." He frowned

Cassie frowned when he said that and looked away. "School...?" She hadn't thought about that. Why hadn't she thought of that!? Her stomach felt sick again and she shook her head pushing her plate away. "I didn't even think school was an option for us anymore. Except maybe college." She said defeated. She'd forgotten exactly what she was walking away from, and school was probably the only she'd miss at the orphanage. "School would cost way too much... It's not even worth it..." She knew that disappointment laced her voice, but she didn't want him to argue about it. Cassie realized the other thing he said and frowned more, "And you're not dumb! What gave you that idea!?" She looked at him, slightly angry at him for calling himself that.

He looked surprised for a moment, "Compared to you guys? I'm definitely the dullest lightbulb." He smiled, "but thanks." He looked around, "If we go to a different city, a small town we could go to school there ." He looked back to Cassie. "You guys all need to go back. I can find a job."

Cassie looked at Tommy trying to find something to say about the matter, but she couldn't. It was because she wanted to go back to school badly, but also she knew it would be difficult. She looked at everyone and spoke up, "Okay, group meeting guys...! How are we going to make this work!? Tommy thinks we should try to get back into a school, but the costs are just too much. And they'll be asking for who our parents or guardians are, and we won't be able to give them an answer... Do you guys think we should still try to get back into a school soon?" Maybe an online school...? But we don't even have access to the Internet... Cassie sighed.

Xavier looked up from his plate at Cassidy and Tommy, his eyes wide. "You're not gonna make me go to school, are you?" He asked quietly, not really sure why the idea of an education scared him. But no matter the reason, school wasn't an option for him. He put on a serious expression, looking Cassidy in the eyes since she seemed to be one of the main leaders of the group. "I won't go. Period dot end of story."

Cassie looked at Xavier stunned with how serious he was about not going. She looked him in the eye for a moment thinking then looked down. "You wouldn't have to go. Nobody would have to go! We aren't going to make anyone do anything they don't want to do. It's not like..." Cassie glanced at Tommy then looked away again, "It's not like we were trying to act like your guy's parents, so don't look at it that way, okay? Everyone has a choice. Everyone gets a say." She sighed. "I was just asking if anybody thought school was even an option for us?" She looked back at Xavier then at the others.

Aspen thought about Cassidy's words for a moment. As much as he didn't like the idea of school, especially a public school, he decided it was probably a good idea. "We should figure something out. I don't really care that much either way but," he paused. "School is probably the best thing for us. We only have a couple years left, and it would help us with finding jobs and stuff."

"It's too risky," Issac said, speaking up. "They'd want to know our parents. And then they'd realize we're the escapees. We'd end up right back where we started. I don't think school's a good idea."

Xavier instantly felt bad for his actions and seemed to shrink down into himself. "Sorry," he mumbled, then looked back up with a nutral expression. "There is a way to get enrolled in schools. Some kid I used to know did it and never got caught. Fake IDs with fake names, and not everyone goes to the same school. We'd need someone to pose as a parent, and with the right clothes I think Tommy could pull it off. As long as no one gets in trouble to where a parent needs to be called, everyone would be safe."

"What about those fake diplomas? I don't know what they are called." He looked around the rooms , "with out the diplomas we will never amount to anything, unless we join the military... And I'm thinking only a couple of us want that."

Issac ignored Thomas's comment, "You know Xavier, I think that's a really good plan. But maybe we should have Vinaya be our "Parent" instead of Tommy. Vinaya is the most "Adult like" of us anyways," he suggested.

Cassie nodded from all of their words, everyone making a good point. However, she still wasn't any closer to knowing what they really should do, and she wanted to withdraw. Cassidy didn't like not knowing, and this was frustrating her. "There is a way to get your GED without going back to high school, but I'm not exactly sure how to do it." She replied to what Tommy said. Thinking more she sighed, "Listen, guys, maybe we should just lay low while we're still here in this city, and once we make some cash," She glanced at Tommy and Aspen knowing they've got jobs already, "We can get away from here, travel to who knows where, then maybe look back into the school subject." She hesitated momentarily, "Agreed..?" Biting her lip she looked at all of them.

The thought of homeschooling crossed Aspen's mind, but he didn't know if there were any requirements for it so he didn't bring it up. Besides, Cassie's idea seemed good. Lying low for awhile would be safest anyway. "Waiting sounds like a good idea," he agreed. "Our escape is too recent to try to go back out there anyway. We'd just get caught and sent back."
