The Great Magi's Misadventures

Tayleen nodded. An idea came to mind. "Would you mind if I wondered through the town? I would appreciate being able to talk to people and would be less of an annoyance to you"

She smiled in gratitude. "Thank you" she said. She really appreciated it. She wanted to hug him, but wasn't sure of how he would react.

Finnas nodded as he took out some meat from his infinity bag and, cutting it in half, put it on a roasting spit over the fire. He then pulled out a magical dagger out of his bag and gave it Tayleen. "I don't expect you to use this. Only use it if you have to."

Tayleen took the dagger out and nodded. "In th st case, let us hope that I will not have to use it"

"It won't kill anyone. But it will paralyze them. One good slice from that dagger will shut down motor functions for a good half an hour," Finnas said, giving Tayleen the sheath for the dagger. "Consider it a present."

She took the sheath and stared at it for a moment. The last present she had gotten came to mind and she couldn't hold back the tears that fell down her cheeks. She was grateful, but reminded of something she preferred not to remember. "Thank you..." she mumbled. She put the dagger in the sheath and turned away from him.

Finnas shrugged and took one of the spits out of the fire and gave the cooked meat to Tayleen. "I'm friends with the owner of the magic shop we're going to in Ivalice. She should be able to get us the things we need."

Tayleen took the spit. She nodded and picked at the meat. She picked off the meat and stuffed it into her mouth.

"You don't have to stick around if you don't want to. She can get a bit...obnoxious around me at times," Finnas said as he grabbed the other spit, rubbing the back of his head.

"We should get some rest now. It's gonna be a long day for traveling, tomorrow," Finnas said, finishing the meat on the spit.

Tayleen looked around and nodded. She yawned and stood. She walked to the tent and looked inside once more.

"There are two full rooms inside," Finnas said, calling out to Tayleen. "Go ahead and pick one of them. The room will adjust itself to please the one using it."

Tayleen froze as she listened. She walked into the tent and chose one of the two rooms. When she walked in ,the room changed to a simple room with only a cot and a blanket. She smiled and sat on the ground.

Finnas looked around, checking if anyone else was nearby before going into the tent. He sighed and took off his cloak, folding it neatly before putting it on the ground next to him. Strange symbols could barely be seen on the back of his shoulders. Taking an extended exhale, he released excess magical energy contained in him, creating spectral wings which sprouted from his back in the design of the symbols on his shoulders. He then inhaled, causing the wings to disappear.

Tayleen looked at her hands for a moment. She sighed and layed down on the cot. She stared upwards for a while before she finally drifted into sleep.

After a few minutes of stargazing, Finnas headed into his room, which contained a nice bed along with a night stand, book case, and alchemy table.

As Tayleen slept she dreamed of many things, but one stood out from the rest. This dream was more of a nightmare and a memory. She dreamed of a group of bandits similar to the group that had sacked her village not too long ago. The difference though was not the group, but the location and the people. A group of three walked down a path, a mother, a father and a young girl. As they walked along the father brought a small black stone from his pocket and kneeled. He looked into his daughter's eyes and pressed the stone into her hand. "Protect this with your life. Never let anyone see it. If something is to happen to your mother and I, I want you to find a magi and have them train you," he said. The girl nodded and buried the stone in her pocket. The father nodded gravely and stood. As the family walked, they were unaware of the bandits that watched them. Then they jumped out of the bushes behind the parents and grabbed the girl's mother. One placed a knife at her mother's throat. "NO!" Tayleen screamed. She jerked up from the cot. The blanket seemed to tangle around her. She couldn't breathe. She frantically threw the blanket off and ran outside. She felt the tears she held back flow down her cheeks. Her breathing heavy. She trembled. 'That girl...she was me' she thought.

*The next morning*

Finnas stretched as he got out of bed, yawning as he did so. He changed into his traveling clothes as he brushed his hair to make it neat. He woke in the middle of the night to noise coming from the next room. "Nightmare, probably," he said to himself, putting on his cloak to hide the markings on his back. He grabbed his staff and walked outside, pulling some food out of his infinity pack and cooked it over the fire. Finnas thought about many things in his mind, such as what and how he was going to teach Tayleen. He never really taught anyone long-term before. Another thing on his mind was his own training on attaining the mastery of one of the ultimate spells in the world, Warlock Form, in which the caster creates markings on his/her body which show similar aspects of an animal of his/her choice. Third thing, Cassandra, the owner of the magic shop. Finnas hoped that she wouldn't be clingy around him when he visited to buy supplies.

Tayleen Sat outside, already dressed and ready. Well, except for the fact that she was huddled in a fetal position on the ground and still crying. In her hands she held her traveling bag close to her body. She couldn't and wouldn't move, not until she knew how the dream ended. In all truth, she knew how it ended, she just didn't want to accept it. She shuddered and stood.

Tayleen looked at him. She rolled her eyes and sat up. "like you care," she mumbled. She shrugged and watched him silently.

"Well, if it's none of my business, then I'll stay out of it, then," Finnas said, finishing up with cooking the food. He put some food onto a wooden plate and gave it to Tayleen. "Eat up. It'll take at least three hours to get to Ivalice."

Tayleen picked at the food, but didn't eat. She was too upset and didn't feel like it. She looked at their surroundings.
