The Great Magi's Misadventures

"By the way, that's a basic trick you'll have to learn," Finnas said, clenching and relaxing his hand. "Magic Pulse, that's what it's called. It's your basic form of self-defense if you can't cast a spell in time."

Tayleen nodded. " Ok, " she said softly. She looked down at her clenched hand, could she trust anyone anymore? She didn't know, but she felt that she must in order to be able to learn. She loosened her grip around the stone. It was barely visible in between her slender fingers.

Tayleen looked at Finnas. She studied him for a minute. She looked down and bit her lip. She held the hand holding the stone out and opened her hand, revealing the black stone.

Finnas' eyes widened. "Where did you get that?" he said in a serious tone, suddenly looking around for more of those beasts.

Tayleen looked at him. She closed her hand around the stone again. " I've had it, my whole life, " she said. "Well, as far back as I can remember"

Finnas looks around more, noticing more shadows leaping between the surrounding trees. "That...can't be good. C'mon, we have to move!" Finnas swept Tayleen off her feet, letting his staff hover parallel to the ground. Stepping on his staff, he leaned forward, causing the staff to move in that direction. He put on his goggles to keep the wind and falling leaves out of his eyes.

Tayleen looked around. 'Did he....?' she thought. She tightened her grip on the rock. She was slightly frightened now and shut her eyes tight.

Finnas dodged between trees and leaps of beasts similar to the first one he and Tayleen encountered earlier. He had a little trouble maneuvering since he was carrying Tayleen, but it wasn't enough to slow him down. They eventually broke through the treeline on the other side of the forest, out in an open field, with the beasts still giving chase. Finnas leaped off his staff, making it fly forward as he gently put down Tayleen. He then faced the charging monsters as he extended his hand, with his staff returning to it, and began to cast a spell. Finnas drew a magic sigil in the air which glowed a cyan color, with a glowing white orb glowing in the center. As the spell began to charge, the beasts were getting even closer and closer. Finally, Finnas released the energy from the sigil, causing the orb to fire out from the center and split into several beams of magic energy, banishing the beasts from the current plain of existence and returning them to their own. Finnas collapsed onto his knees as the sigil began to dissolve into mist, exhausted from using up a lot of magical energy.

Tayleen felt Finnas set her down, but didn't dare to open her eyes. Her hand turned red from how tightly she was holding the stone. Suddenly she felt her full attention focus on the stone. She curled up around the stone. All that mattered to her was the stone.

Finnas limped over to Tayleen, falling into a sitting position. "Hey, lemme see that stone real quick," he said, holding out his hand.

Tayleen opened her eyes and looked at Finnas. She opened her hand and gave him the stone reluctantly.

Finnas closely examined the black stone, looking at it from all angles. "Interesting, I never thought I'd ever see one of these before."

Tayleen looked at the ground. She shook her head. "I would imagine not," she said. She sighed and stood.

"I've seen Aether Crystals before, but never a black variant." Finnas handed the stone back to Tayleen as he laid on his back. "Those are considered powerful enough that they have the ability to banish demons and other-worldly monsters back to where they came from when infused with a weapon. No wonder those things were after us, so they could destroy it."

Tayleen sighed and wrapped her hand tightly around the stone. " That's why I hide it," she said. She shook her head and looked up. " I'm supposed to protect it, but I haven't done that well enough. My father would be disappointed if he were alive, " she said with a sigh.

Finnas put down his infinity bag, which was about the size of a regular day-pack, and pulled out a tent (bigger on the inside, of course) and set it up. As soon as he was finished, he set up a fire by using a fire spell.

Tayleen looked at the tent, confused. ' What..how?' she thought. She walked around the tent. It was odd to see it. She peaked inside the tent, her eyes widened. "Wow.." she said.

"Compression magic. Normally used when you wanna carry something around." Finnas said from outside, warming his hands on the fire. He then got up and used his staff to draw a barrier around the campsite. "There should be a spare room somewhere in there."

Tayleen looked at him curiously. She walked over to him. "Ah, I see. How does it work?" she asked. She watched him make the barrier.

"Giant alchemical symbols," Finnas said, finishing up the sigil for the barrier. "It's very complicated and highly difficult. Not for me, of course."

"Our first stop is a town North of here called Ivalice," Finnas said, pulling out a magic map which showed his exact location. "I need to pick up some supplies first before I can teach you how to use magic." He didn't pack any of his beginner's spell books because he didn't think he would find the right apprentice in a short amount of time. That is, if she was the right one.
