The Great Magi's Misadventures

"Huh, I guess you aren't one of those people who's constantly trying to get my autograph or demonstrate something for them," Finnas said, crossing his arms. He could see the clueless look in her face. "...You don't know who I am, do you?"

She looked at him. "No clue," she said. She shook her head. " Why would I want your autograph? That seems an odd thing to ask on a first meeting"

"Wow, you really are clueless," Finnas said, smirking and shaking his head. "I'm the Great Mage, Finnas Brightheart. I'm surprised you haven't heard of me even though your town has groupies dedicated to trying to get me to teach them magic."

She blinked in confusion. She shrugged and smirked slightly. " I'm not as good of a listener as I am a talker, the name is Tayleen" she said. She sat on the ground and crossed her legs, blocking any path out. She shrugged and her smirk grew. "And know that you've said your name, I know who you are"

"Good, good, now," Finnas said, his smile disappearing from his face as a serious look appeared, "how did you find this place? No ordinary human is able to sense the presence of my house due to the barrier I set up around it. Did your little friends at the town tell you to find me so you could reveal my location to them, allowing them to mob me with their wishes?" He prepared a memory erasure spell in his right hand, which gave off a unique magical essence only those with magical ability could see unless released.

She rolled her eyes. "No," she said simply. She picked at the grass beside her. She shrugged. She didn't know how she had found his house, but she had.

"You know," Finnas said, clicking his tounge, "I could erase your memory right now, yet you don't seem afraid. You look pretty carefree for a lost girl in the woods."

Tayleen looked at him. She scoffed. "It's not my first time being lost," she said. She looked at the ground. She shrugged nonchalantly. She stayed silent for a moment before speaking again. " And there are some things I wish I could forget"

"I see," Finnas replied, relaxing his hand and releasing the magical energy in it. "My question still stands, though: how did you find this place?"

"I don't know, I just felt something in this direction and followed my instincts," she said. She stood, she wasn't to fond of discussing the topic. She turned away and shrugged. " I've always been able to sense things that others can't."

"Interesting." Finnas took a thinking pose, leaning against the door frame of the entrance of his house. Does she have a Mage's Spirit? No one in that town has one. If she does have one, how have I not been able to sense it? Jamming crystal? Maybe. But where would she get one? Unless it was given to her by her parents when she was little... Finnas glanced at Tayleen for a moment. "Did your parents ever give you anything when you were little?"

Tayleen froze at the mention of her parents. She closed her eyes as she felt tears come to her eyes. "Th...they did.." she said, her voice gruff and cracking. She shook her head to clear the memories.

Finnas grew quiet when Tayleen began to cry. "May I have permission to see that object? There's something I want to confirm."

She took a necklace of her neck and tossed it to him. She stared at her hands. She didn't say anything. She couldn't think nor did she want to. She sighed as the tears that she had held back for the past ten years edged their way down her cheeks. She hated to cry.

Finnas caught the necklace out of the air and observed the gem on the end. There was no denying it. The moment Tayleen took off the necklace, Finnas could see a magical aura emanating off of her. He then walked toward her and put her hand on her shoulder, saying, "Come with me." He then left her, entering his house.

She stood and followed after Finnas. She raised her hands to her cheeks and wiped her tears away. She looked around the area. She wondered about everything that had happened and shook her head. She was still speechless and couldn't take in the events of what had just happened. Right then she made herself a promise to not cry again. There was too much at stake.

The inside of Finnas' house was very quaint. Next to the door as one entered, there was a coat rack, which had his staff leaning against it, along with his cloak and goggles hanging on one of the arms. To the left of the entrance was the living room, a couch and two cushioned chairs facing each other, with a small table in the middle of the three. There were various books and papers on top of the table. To the right was a counter, behind it being the kitchen. It was littered with a few cooking ingredients and plates. In between these two rooms was a hallway with several doors, two on the left, and two on the right. There was also an upstairs portion of the house, of which the two rooms could be seen from the entrance.

Finnas entered his house, walking up the stairs to the first door after, a library which held many books and various magical items. "In here," Finnas said, as he rummaged around the room, looking for something.

Her eyes widened. She walked into the library. "Wow...." was all she could say. She stood in the doorway, somewhat amazed.

"Ah, here it is," Finnas said, pulling a large crystal out of a drawer. He put his magical energy into the crystal, causing it to glow as he pulled it out, then gave it to Tayleen, making it lose its glow. "Concentrate on this crystal." It was a Magus Crystal, used to see if a person was capable of using magic. It was the only way for Finnas could see if anyone was worthy of teaching in the town. He didn't tell people what it was, of course.

Tayleen looked at the crystal, she tilted her head slightly. She turned the crystal over in her hand as she carefully examined it. All of her attention was on the crystal. She saw nothing but the crystal. To her the crystal was all that mattered. She looked for flaws and found none. She looked at the crystal in awe and reverence. She looked at Finnas. " Is this...?" she said, then trailed off as her gaze fell back onto the crystal. She rubbed her hand against it.

Finnas looked at Tayleen as she gazed at the crystal. If she really is a Magus, then the Crystal should have no problem reacting to her, Finnas thought to himself, smiling as the Crystal began to glow, but instead of it glowing a bright green for him, which was a sign of being a master of the magical arts, it glowed a fiery orange, a sign that the holder had much potential. "I knew it."

Tayleen looked at Finnas. She looked at the crystal again. She didn't know how it was glowing. Her eyes widened. " What does it mean?" she asked. She looked at Finnas again in amazement. She held the crystal up.

"Congratulations," Finnas said, slowly clapping for Tayleen as he took the crystal out of her hands, which made it lose its glow. "That's all the proof I need to teach you."

Tayleen looked at Finnas. She furrowed her brow. "Huh?" she asked, more to herself than to him.

"Your parents must have been very special if you were able to do that," Finnas said, giving Tayleen back her suppression crystal necklace. "And I thought no one in that town had a Mage's Spirit."
