The Great Magi's Misadventures

Tayleen blinked and looked down. She shook her head to clear her thoughts and then looked up again. She had been distracted, she couldn't figure out why though? Was it because of him or was it because she had been wondering when she would become more than what she was? She frowned as she thought, then shook her head again. She thought of the fact that she had used magic and smiled a little. "I feel..proud. Even though it wasn't much."

"Well, with a little practice, you'll get better. I'm surprised you were able to use magic that quickly," Finnas commented, patting Tayleen's head. "Anyway, onward we go."

Tayleen shrugged and watched him for a moment. She felt like a kid when he patted her head. She frowned. Was that all she was? Not just to him, but to everyone? She looked away and shook her head. For some reason, it hurt to think that he thought of her as a child. She sighed and then followed after him. Her eyes closed and she softly hummed.

"So, what can you tell me about your old town?" Finnas asked, slowing down his pace a little so Tayleen could keep up with him.

Tayleen opened her eyes and looked at him. She shrugged. "Not much. Depends on what you want to know. I only remember bits and pieces. I left when I was..." She looked down. Why couldn't she remember how old she had been when she had left? Was it nine? No. It was ten. "Ten.."

"What I do remember of them....I try not to remember. If you wish to know, though...I shall tell." Tayleen said. She kicked a rock out of the way and was silent for a moment. "I...I watched them die. In front of me. I blamed myself for their deaths and not being able to save them. In a way...it was the only reason I'm desperate to learn magic."

"Desperation will only lead to further sadness and regret," Finnas said, knowing that feeling as he killed his own parents on accident. "Any good moments?"

"A few, yes. Well..more like many." Tayleen smiled a little. "Singing with my father in the garden and dancing. Things that a little girl enjoys. What...most people want for their daughters. We weren't exactly poor." She shrugged and looked away.

Tayleen shook her head. "Technically it wasn't mine to take. It wouldn't have mattered anyways. The bandits took everything. And burned the house down." She clenched her fists and glared ahead. She gritted her teeth and growled under her breath. "The next time I see them though..."

Finnas grabbed Tayleen's hand in an attempt to calm her down. "You shouldn't use your magic for vengeance. Many magi have fallen into corruption by using their powers that way."

Tayleen looked at him with tears in her eyes. "I know...it just hurts so much" she looked away and was silent. "I don't want to feel like that. I don't know what I want, really. I want things that are impossible. And...I can see why using magic to gain vengeance would lead to corruption." She sighed and shuffled her feet. She shrugged and looked up. "When I was younger though and magic wasn't an option, I had decided to just....fight them. I didn't realize until they attacked the village that it wouldn't work."

Tayleen blinked and stared at him blankly for a moment. She sighed and wrapped her arms around him. She didn't know what to say at that moment. She closed her eyes and was silent for a moment. "My best? I didn't even get to try."

Tayleen shrugged and was silent. She looked away, thinking. She looked at him, her eyes searching for his. "I...I don't. I wouldn't change anything. The past has made me who I am."

Tayleen watched him in silence. She smiled only a little. She looked at the forest for a moment, then gasped. The town! Hadn't that been where were going?
