Joshua and Jacob Smith
FEDRA Officer, FEDRA Civilian | 24, 30 | Current location ;; Seattle Quarantine Zone

Josh rubbed his arm as he heard that and sighed. “It’s a long story, or I guess a complicated one. But I’ll tell you.” Josh said, though he paused for a moment when the approached the man. “Oh hello. Yes. I am Commander Frye. Are you two here to get a patrol route? We’re setting them up around the inside and outside of the zone perimeter.” He said, his voice rough but had a kind undertone. Josh looked at Soren and then to the Commander. “Uh yes sir. We were wondering if we could patrol near the far side, closer to the bay? My name is Officer Joshua Smith and this is Officer Soren Truelson.” Josh introduced them as the Commander stood there for a moment thinking the request through.

Kai looked at Hayden when he was released from the hug. His eyes followed the finger, pointing to the shark and then the bigger one. “Really?!” He asked, awe and wonder on his face. He giggled at the poke to his chest. “I’m like a shark?” He asked, turning to Hayden with a wide smile. His eyes were wide as he looked between the sharks on the page and then to Hayden.

Now Soren was more than curious, but they were kind of busy. He tucked away the thought and hoped that he would remember to remind Josh to tell him this story later. Perhaps when they found themselves on a patrol. “Though we are happy to patrol wherever you need us and do whatever it is that we can to help, to be frank, sir, we have people who are aching to know what the world they used to know is looking like, and we promised to go look if at all possible for them.” This was not exactly a lie though it was hardly the full truth. He was not sure that saying he wanted to search for personal items was something he could get away with yet, especially to a Commander that he did not know. “Besides, the further out, the more dangerous it gets. We are happy to take the risk for our people.”

Hayden giggled himself as he bent down with his hands clasped together and on his head. “We are just like sharks!” he exclaimed as he popped up, top half bent over, and he pretended to swim around in the universal way of doing so. “Come on, little man! Come be a shark with me. Remember, they may look scary, but they aren’t scary at all. They’re just creatures like all the rest.” He eyed Jacob and moved close to Kai. “Sharks do get hungry like every other animal. They like to eat schools of smaller fish and even some plankton. We saw those in the book.” He pointed to Jacob. “You know what Jay is?”

The Commander looked at the two for a moment. He mulled both of the comments over and nodded his head. “It is definitely a more dangerous part of the zone over there and if you’re volunteering then I see no problem with it.” He finally said as Joshua’s eyes widened a little and nodded. “Thank you sir.” He replied and the older man nodded. “Besides, you seem to have a mission and the General has mentioned both of you and how well you work together. Take a truck and head out.” He said. Josh nodded once more. “Yes sir. Thank you.”

Kai giggled as he watched Hayden pop up, and he tilted his head a little before he laughed and copied him. “I’m a shark!” He said, walking bent over like Hayden. His attention was drawn when he heard him then looked at Jacob. “Jay is a fish!” Kai said, turning towards him. Jacob shifted, hearing that and popped up, taking the stance of a fish. “Oh no! Two sharks coming to eat me!” He said, backing up as Kai advanced.

Soren was impressed with just how well they seemed to get away with what they wanted to do. As they got the go ahead, he nodded appreciatively and took a step back to dismiss himself. “Thank you kindly,” he answered as he moved away, grinning at Josh as they headed for the trucks. They could pick up supplies on the way. Thankfully, they seemed to have things all over the place. “I really should have had you this entire time. I get much more done that way.”

Hayden smiled at Kai and Jacob as they slowly stalked towards their prey. “Sure, it’s scary that sharks have to eat fish, but it’s no different than the people who have to hunt for our food. Everyone needs to eat something, and sharks are carnivores. They eat meat.” He bent down to Kai’s level and looked at Jacob. “And he’s delicious meat. We should go eat him. How should we capture our food, little shark?”

Josh looked at Soren as they moved away and he chuckled, hearing his words. "I.. I didn't do anything but ask." He said quietly as they headed to the trucks. They stopped and grabbed some guns, because it was unknown just what it was going to look like out there. "I can only imagine how happy Jacob will be if we can get some of his stuff, especially his pictures with mom." Josh said as they walked.

Kai looked up at Hayden and then at Jacob. Hmm. He thought about it for a moment. "Jump attack!" Kai suggested, as Jacob seemed to 'freeze' in place, watching the two 'sharks' coming towards him. He shook his head as Kai swam towards him. "Jay! Food! Fish!" He giggled as he looked at him.

“You say that,” Soren began as he grabbed his weaponry and ammo, “but there’s something about you. You’ve got this magnetic personality. And we have this reputation for being this fabulous duo, which is way more appealing than being a fabulous uno.” When he finished he walked along Josh, heading towards the trucks once more. “I think you are right. I think he is going to feel way more at home if we can get him some of his things.” He tossed the keys in his hands.

Hayden was a slower shark so that Kai could get to Jacob without impediments. He swam wide in the room to give everyone more space. As they got closer to Jacob, he yelled, “Jump attack!” and leapt to Jacob’s side, grabbing towards him with hands that looked like claws even though that didn’t make a whole lot of sense when being a shark. He gnashed his teeth dramatically, which was admittedly more sharklike. He did not grab Jacob so that Kai could do that. He would play it by ear with the little one.

Josh looked at Soren as he grabbed his weapon and tilted his head slightly. "Magnetic personality?" He asked, confused as they started walking again. "And I guess so, I've never thought of it before." He added as they headed towards the trucks before he heard him. "Most likely he will, though having you seems to help him a lot as well." Josh said as they got to the trucks and Josh climbed in the passenger's seat.

Kai let small grumbles that were supposed to be growls. He got closer to Jacob and heard Hayden's yell. Jacob leaned away from Hayden's grab but looked at Kai who was headed right for him. The little one raced forward and leapt onto him, his hands or 'teeth' grabbed Jacob's shirt as he rolled to the ground. "Ah!" Jacob said playfully as Kai made the grabbing motions with his hands.

Soren jumped into the driver’s seat and started up the truck. “Sure. I think it runs in the family. You and your bother are the same way. What little I saw of your dad and Logan were the same way too. You’re the kind of people that you want around.” He pulled them out and headed to their destination. “Of course, I could be biased with the whole being your neighbor and also being in love with your brother. I don’t think that is relevant though since I have now seen it work on just about everyone else and not just me.”

Hayden laughed as Kai sort of tackled Jacob and tried to eat him. “Save some for me!” Hayden called as he swam his way over and joined them on the ground. “Oh no!” he gasped. “You ate him all up! Now what will I eat?” Hayden furrowed his brows, placing a hand below his chin. “Ah ha! What if I eat you?” He turned quickly to Kai with a big grin and his hands out like he was going to grab the little one.

Josh had never thought about his personality before. He just.. was who he was. Though he wasn't surprised that his family had it too. "I never thought of it that way." Josh admitted as the truck moved. "Meh, I don't think you're being biased honestly." He said as he looked out the window and at the zone. People were patrolling around and he realized this was their new world. This was how things were going to be from now on.

Kai giggled as he heard Hayden and Jacob laughed as Hayden joined them on the ground. Kai heard the 'oh no' and looked over to hear him and then giggled at the words and tried to scramble off Jacob who grabbed him. "The fish has the shark by the fins!" Jacob said, holding Kai for Hayden to 'eat' as he laughed and Kai shrieked in laugher and giggles as he squirmed.

“Bonus points for saying ‘meh.’ If that is not the definition of charming, I don’t know what is.” Soren laughed as he drove them through the zone, hoping that he could figure out how to maneuver in this new way of living. He could not see how this was sustainable. There was no way that this was lasting. It had to be temporary. There was bound to be another solution, especially with all the civilians that they were having to deal with now. Eventually, they made it to approximately where they needed to be.

Hayden laughed as Jacob grabbed Kai. “Never trust a fish!” He walked very slowly towards them as he voiced his own version of the Jaw’s theme music. This movie may not have been terribly accurate or kind to the perception of sharks, but it was fun and the theme was good. He finally reached for Kai and started to tickle him. “I’m gonna eat you!” Tickling was definitely how sharks ate other sharks. They were throwing out accuracy and were for sure going with whatever made the two year old giggle the most.

Josh looked at Soren as he heard him laugh and he shook his head. "Okay, good to know." He said with a laugh. He looked out through the zone, and he didn't know how this was going to be the solution. Though, what else did they have to do? Once they made it to approximately the right area, Josh slipped out of the truck and looked around. "His apartment is in that big building just down the way from the wall here. Ready?" He asked, looking at Soren.

Jacob held onto Kai as the two year old looked at Hayden. He squirmed and wriggled, trying to get free. The words, combined with the tickling fingers made Kai giggle and laugh, squirming in place as he laughed. There were no words he could say as he giggled hard at the tickling.

Soren joined him out of the truck, grabbing his rifle. “I am ready. How bad do you think this is going to look?” Having seen how it looked outside the Zone before it was created, he could only assume that it was bad. “Also, how much do you think we would get in trouble if we took a detour after this and got your brother? I hate knowing that he is out there somewhere without anyone else.”

Hayden never knew that something like this could be so fun. He loved playing with Kai. He loved playing with Jacob too. Jacob was a great sport. Not anyone can just be a fish and get eaten by a tiny shark like that. As he laughed so hard the tickling ceased, Hayden fell back onto his bottom as he gently held onto Kai. “What are you going to do now, little shark? How are you going to save yourself?”

Josh looked at Soren as they got out of the truck, his rifle held against his chest as he looked around. "I hope it won't be bad, but I'm not sure." Josh admitted as they started walking. He paused a step at the question and thought for a moment. "We might get in a little trouble but I agree, I don't want him out on his own. He's probably terrified." Josh admitted, "But we'll have to put him in the cell though." He said, knowing that even his brother couldn't get special treatment.

Kai giggled and laughed as he felt the tickling stop and then he was in Hayden's hands, tilting his head. "I'm going eat you!" He said with a laugh and his fingers started making those tickling grabbing motions to Hayden's stomach, squirming at the same time as he did.

Soren moved through the world that looked like it had just been abandoned and left to raiders. That was the scariest part of going to the places like this. They did not look like people were there a couple of days ago. They looked like these people went through something really bad. “Of course,” he agreed. “Same with if we find anyone else. But we can explain to them what it’s for. That it’s the best way to keep them and everyone else safe until they can find a new way to figure out who is and is not infected. I know someone was saying that they were working on something. It’s still so soon out, though.”

He should have been expecting this, but he wasn’t. “Not my own shark offspring! I have been betrayed!” Kai was not as good at tickling quite yet, but that did not mean that he was not successful. Hayden laughed just as much as he tried to squirm away.

Josh kept up with Soren as they walked, his eyes taking in the destroyed world. Shops were broken into, windows smashed and doors busted. It was like the world changed and everyone was fighting to survive. "Exactly. I know Logan would understand, and I hope that anyone we come across would also understand." Josh replied as they walked up to the apartment building. "Ready? He's on the second floor, last door down the hall." Josh said as he pushed open the door and looked around, it was clear so far.

Kaiden giggled and laughed as he heard Hayden's laugh and watched him squirm. He was having so much fun with this man, and it was way better than sitting in the apartment. Jacob had sat up and he grinned, getting to his feet and walked around Hayden. "The little fish wants to help the little shark." He said with a grin, dropping to his knees behind Hayden and wrapped his arms around him, 'holding' him for Kai.

The world was devastating. Movies did not do apocalypse justice. There were so many movies and books and television shows that showed the world in a state after disaster. None of it could compare to the real thing. It made it hard for Soren to breathe as he took it all in. This was reality now. It was not something bad that happened that one time. This was life from then on. “Ready.” He moved in past Josh and searched the area. This apartment was much worse off than their old apartment complex. He was sure that meant that there would be more infected that they were going to run into. He was suddenly very glad that he did not bring Jacob back. As he moved forward, he saw a man on the ground. He looked dead. Blood was everywhere. Was that someone that Jacob used to know? As Soren moved by his head snapped to the side to see the man twitch. No, not dead. He was just very still for a while. Without a second thought, Soren slammed his foot down, crushing the head. He did not want to attract anything with bullets if he did not have to. He turned back to Josh. So sometimes they did this kind of thing too.

“Oh no!” Hayden cried with a laugh. Now with both of them around him, he was definitely trapped. “Betrayed by everyone! First my own little shark and then my fish accomplice! What a cruel world!” His cries were dramatic and loud, but they were absolutely screaming with the amount of fun and excitement that he had. In that moment, he knew that there were no other people who could ever keep him this happy.

Joshua looked around, his lip in between his teeth as he looked around at the disaster that was once a beautiful part of Seattle. His lips were in a firm line as he looked around. He caught the look Soren gave to the man laying on the ground. He would've walked past him too, before he saw him move. He watched as Soren took care of the man by crushing his head. As they moved to the stairs, he led the way up and pushed open the door to the second floor. Quiet, but not quite. Something was moving, he could hear the faint stumbling but he couldn't pinpoint. He looked back at Soren and placed a finger over his lips before entering the second floor.

Kai giggled as he heard Hayden's words and kept going, before he stopped for a moment. Jacob took that chance to slip away from Hayden to catch his own breath. Kai managed a few more ticking moments and then he squirmed in Hayden's hold, a yawn slipping out as he looked at Hayden with tired brown eyes.

Soren followed up the stairs, wary now of what they could find. There were no actual dead bodies. That was the part that was crazy. He saw these infected rip people apart, and yet, there were no casualties other than the world itself. This outbreak took all of the bodies. Or at least, it took most of them. He remembered the people they had to shoot just in case. He was certain that they were not sick. They took some of the lives. Soren would remember that for a long time. He nodded to Josh as they pushed through to the second floor. That stumbling was louder now but not immediately apparent. Further down the hall somewhere?

Hayden sucked in his breath when Jacob gave him his reprieve and eventually too slowed when Kai seemed to be tiring as well. “Well, little shark. I think we’ve done an awful lot today, haven’t we? We read a whole book. Learn a lot about sharks. Got to eat Jay.” He grinned wide and poked his nose. “And you. And me.” He gently coaxed Kai into sitting on his leg. “Is it naptime? That was a whole lot of stuff we just did.”

Josh stepped onto the second floor, scanning the area. He heard the stumbling get louder as he headed down the hallway. A door was busted off its hinges a foot away, and Josh made his way that way. He looked around and then back at Soren, dipping his head towards it. ‘In there’ was his intended message. He didn’t have a melee weapon, just his rifle. He peeked around the door frame and saw the runner stumbling around inside, facing away from them. Good. He carefully ducked inside, then grabbed the runner by the neck and squeezed with his arm until a soft pop sound. Then he lowered the body down. He turned to leave when a hand grabbed his ankle, sending him to the floor and an old woman was grabbing at him, her face all contorted with black veins.

Jacob sat back and watched the two as he finally caught his breath. Kai giggled as his nose was poked and he nodded. Kai moved with Hayden and sat on his leg. “Nap time.. tired..” Kai said softly, yawning again.

Ah, yes, through to this apartment. So many of the apartments ended up like this one with a busted door and so many broken things. Soren wished that he understood what happened when someone became infected. Everyone got so violent. It really messed with their heads. He followed inside, silently watching as Josh took down the runner. He checked to one side, sweeping through to make sure that it was clear. The thud of Josh crashing to the floor made Soren swiftly spin around. His eyes widened at the woman who held onto him. He could shoot, but there were bound to be more. He needed to save that for when he absolutely could not do anything else. He rushed over, trying to think of how he could do this quickly, and decided the butt of his rifle was going to be a lot more like a melee weapon than his own body. He slammed it into her head which at least moved her away from Josh. She wasn’t quite dead yet though. He crouched down, knee on her to keep her down and slammed the rifle into her face again. It was a horrible sight. He hated that he had to be so aggressive with them. Once she stopped moving, he was back up and more vigilantly looking to make sure that they were not about to attacked again.

“Come here, little shark.” He opened his arms as an offering and then slowly circled them around Kai. “Everyone gets tired.” He ran a hand through Kai’s hair and slowly lifted them both up so that Hayden was standing with Kai in his arms. “Let’s go back to that nice big, comfy bed, huh?” He started walking that way. “With all those blankets. Cozy naptime.”

Josh was kicking his leg, trying to free himself of her grasp. Her nails were sharp and she left marks in his leg that he noticed when Soren managed to get her off him. He watched as Soren managed to kill her and he got to his feet. Blood trickled down his ankle and he winced a little when he put weight on it but he was fine. He could walk. “Let’s get moving before more show up.” He whispered to Soren, heading slowly towards the door.

Kai looked at the offered arms and shifted, feeling them wrap around him. A tired sigh slipped free as he felt the hand in his hair. “Bed. Nap.” Kai agreed softly, as he yawned again. He looked back at Jacob who’d gotten up and followed. He could use a nap too, especially after this morning.

Soren could not tell how bad the leg was, but he was pretty sure that had to hurt. He whispered, “we can take a look at your leg and patch up anything when we get to Jacob’s apartment and secure it.” He peeked around the door and checked. No visual signs of anyone else. “Clear.” He moved forward, heading slowly towards the end.

Hayden carried Kai to the bed and gently set him down. He moved himself so that he was sitting up against the headboard. He patted the spots beside him for both Kai and Jacob. He was bad at being alone, so he would be with both of them. His favorite people. He was just missing one. Maybe two. Or three. Or five. Or eight. He sucked in a breath and spun the ring as he stared out at the room. “I think it’s naptime, and then… and then they said they found more stuff, right?” he looked at Jacob. “Maybe we can help them bring things here? I am sure that’s a lot to move. And they’re so busy.” Anything to make this life better.

Josh head the whisper and nodded, he knew that Jacob had a few medical kits in his apartment. He cast one last glance at the old woman. Ms Hollis. He’d med her a handful of times when he’d come to see his brother. He made his way down to the end of the apartment. Jacob’s door was locked and seemed intact. He used the butt of his rifle to hit the knob and the door swung open. He looked inside and it was quiet. “Clear.” Josh whispered as he stepped inside, grabbing a chair to prop against the door after Soren was inside. Jacob’s apartment was small, similar to their own. But this one had pictures on the wall, some with Jacob and the rest of the family, some with just Jacob and his mom or dad, and one of him, baby faced and a high school graduation robe and a sign reading headed to College in his hand. Josh headed for the bathroom and to get the first aid kit.

Kai felt the bed as he was laid down and closed his eyes, but he shifted so he could touch Hayden. Jacob sat on the other side of Kai, up against the headboard as well. “Maybe. If they’ll let us. I’m not sure how much we can actually do.” Jacob admitted, he had no idea if they could even leave this apartment. This was all new to him.

As he waited for Josh to open Jacob’s door, Soren could have sworn he heard something. It was faint, which meant that whatever it was, and he was sure it was something, was not close. Not yet anyway. He slipped inside and let out a gentle breath of relief as Josh barricaded the door. He looked around and couldn’t help but smile at how nicely preserved it was. There were a couple of other doors they passed that were closed like this too, and he could only hope that meant that they were nice like these. Not that those people were coming back to these places right now. Maybe they could later. He paused at the pictures on the walls. It was like seeing into the past. He smiled at every one of them no matter who was in them. “You guys are the cutest family I have ever seen.” He gently touched the graduation photo. “And college did you good.” He grabbed as many photographs as he could, especially the ones with the family members he knew were no longer there. “Josh, how does it look?” he called as he pulled away from his distraction.

Hayden did not even think about it, but he held Kai close like they were meant to be like that. He was not sure what it was, but this little boy felt like his family. He rubbed his back, drawing slow circles like his parents used to do to him when he was little. He smiled softly as he thought about them. He wished he could see them again. “I don’t know why not. We are capable people who need something to do. If Josh can just go in and say he’s one of them now, I don’t see why we can’t tell them that we are here to help. They can focus on other things… like…” bombs.

Josh grabbed the first aid kit, not paying much attention to Soren as he sat on the toilet and placed his foot on the tub. He slipped his pant leg up and grabbed the alcohol wipes. As he was wiping his ankle and revealing the short not deep cuts, he heard him. "It's fine. Not as bad as it looked." Josh called back. He did wrap his ankle up because he wanted to protect it while they were out. He came out of the bathroom and looked at Soren. "His suitcases should be in the bedroom closet." Josh said, turning to lead the way into the bedroom. He grabbed two suitcases from the closet and started filling it with his clothes. "If you wanna grab all the pictures and trinkets, they can go in the second suitcase."

Kai cuddled close as his eyes closed, feeling the slow circles rubbed into his back. Jacob looked at Hayden and shrugged. "I think it's a military thing? I'm not sure. We can ask them but I don't know if it'll do any good." Jacob admitted as he looked at Hayden with a heavy sigh. He was at a loss because he didn't understand how this worked, but he would be asking Soren tonight.
