Once Grace nodded, Cameron helped her down. Allison walked over to her sister and took her hand. Kaiden slipped off Diva and Cameron took both horses. “Well, see you two soon. And it was nice to meet you Grace and Allison!” Cameron said, smiling at the two girls and he headed to the stables with the horses. Kaiden knelt down in front of Grace and smiled. “Such a brave princess. You did so good riding the horses and letting Cameron help.” He said, smiling at her and ruffling her hair. Kaiden stood up and took Grace’s hand. “Let’s go meet some great people.” Kai said, as Allison reached for Theo’s hand so they could all walk together to Josh and Hayden’s house.​

Grace held Allison’s hand and squeezed it as she tried not to cry. So many things were happening, and it was so much. Ally being there made it better like always. She loved her sister more than anyone else. She smiled at Kaiden. She liked the praise. Everyone was so nice here. Everyone. Could that really be true? Theo waved to Cam, calling out , “Thank you so much!” and grabbed Allison’s hand. “Alright alright alright! Let’s go for a walk.” He moved forward with Kai which urged Grace to walk as well. “Are Mom and Dad here too?” Theo’s face paled at the question. He looked at Kai unsure what to do.​

Kai walked with Theo, and so did Allison. The young girl was in awe at all the people. Taking in the town as they walked. Kai heard Grace’s question and bit his lip. “Grace, sweetheart, your Mom and Dad are.. angels and they aren’t here where you can see them. But yes, they’re here above you. Watching out for you.” Kaiden said as they passed the center of town and headed towards the house. It wasn’t much further. “Angels? Above?” Ally asked as she looked at Kaiden. “Yep. They’re guardian angels. They helped us find you so we could save you and bring you here.”​

Guardian angels above that helped guide Kaiden and Theo to them. Protect them from there. This only cemented the idea that Kai was an angel on the ground to protect them. She was sad though. Grace wanted to see her parents so badly. She didn’t want them to be angels if she couldn’t see them. She sniffled as they walked, trying not to cry. “We can’t see them again?” She didn’t quite understand what this meant, but she thought she was understanding that. Theo sighed. This was such a hard thing to do, and he didn’t know how to handle that. He was hoping that either Kai had some inkling of what to do or they could hold off until they got to Hayden. He clearly knew something about working with kids.​

Kaiden bit his lip as he heard the sniffling. Oh boy. Okay. “Grace. You might not be able to see them but they’re always in your heart.” He said, as Ally sniffled herself, realizing that she’d never get rides on her dad’s shoulders again. They’d never hear their mom singing at night when they had a rough day of travel. Kaiden wasn’t sure what else to do but fortunately there was his dads’ house. “Oh here we are. Come on you, time to meet someone really great.” Kaiden said. He led them up the stairs, and opened the door. It was unlocked so someone was home. “Dad? Papa?” Kai called out, looking around the house.​

They did not get to see their parents anymore. Grace scrunched up her face as tears welled in her eyes remembering her dad’s face as he told them to hide. The last time she saw her mom was when she was running out that door to see what was out there. Theo let go of Allison’s hand so that he could move behind the two girls as they moved up the stairs. He placed a hand on each of their shoulders like shields. “I know how that feels. I can’t ever see my parents again either.” He let himself look a little sad, because he was. He was very sad that there was a part of his family that he could never have again. “But you know what makes it better?” He pointed to Kaiden as he walked inside the house. “Him. And also…” He guided their eyes inside to the man who came walking around a corner, face full of that light that he carried now. “Him.” Hayden smiled warmly seeing Kai. “What a pleasant surprise. Aren’t you supposed to be…” His voice trailed away as he saw the two little girls that Theo ushered in. “Oh, hello.” He immediately bent down to their level even with that bad leg. No leg ever stopped him from being with Kai. “Who are these beautiful young ladies?” His smile was warm and inviting. Like Kaiden’s. Then she saw his eye, and her own eyes went wide. Instead of turning away, he turned his head so they could see it more. “Weird, huh? Kinda scary? But also, it is a little cool.”​

Allison felt Theo let go of her hand and felt the hand on her shoulder. She could feel tears brimming her eyes as she thought about the fact that they’d never see their parents again. Then she heard Theo. He couldn’t either? But before she could ask, she looked at Kai. She trusted him, and then she saw a man coming around a corner and her eyes widened like her sister’s had. His eye. She tilted her head, almost trying to analyze it, her eyes going from wide to curious. “Hey Dad. This is Allison and Grace. We found them while patrolling.” Kaiden said, walking towards him, and gestured for the two to come over. “Come say hello girls.” Allison wasn’t sure though. She shuffled in place, squeezed her sister’s hand and then smiled a little. “H- Hello.”​

Hayden never liked his blind eye. They could have done a lot of things to it to make it better. They could have taken it out completely and sewn the eyelids shut. They could have tried to replace it with something else that looked a lot less freaky. They honestly could have found him a good eyepatch and called it good. However, none of it felt right. He needed to know that it was there. It needed to be a reminder of not only the fight that wracked them but the consequences of it. He never did think it was very cool, though children were often fascinated with it. When they were part of the WLF, plenty of soldiers thought he looked tough. He never wanted that. He saw the curious and alarmed expressions on these two little girls, and it did not bother him. He was an enigma for many. Hayden lowered himself to the ground and sat, the hurt leg straight out and do the side and the other leg bent towards the middle. He put both of his hands out to them. He made sure he was facing them directly. He opened himself to them as he had to Kai all those years ago. “Good morning, Allison and Grace. My name is Hayden, though this one just calls me dad.” He gestured playfully to Kai. He pointed behind them. “Theo sometimes also calls me dad too.” Theo followed as Grace also slowly shuffled forward with her sister. He moved to the side so that he was there in their vision. He eyed Kaiden for a moment, asking a silent question before turning his full attention to the girls again. “When Kaiden was little, you know what he used to call me?” Grace thought this was a strange question, and it made her think about that instead of the things that scared her. She shook her head. “He used to call me Ayden, because he couldn’t say the whole thing. Isn’t that silly?” Grace held up a hand to her mouth and laughed. She nodded. He smiled.​

Allison was still unsure but she didn’t see a reason to distrust this man. He was interesting and she was curious. Her eyes followed as he sat down and held his hands out for them. She giggled at the gesture to Kaiden and Theo, before she heard his question. What. Her mind went to focus on that and distracted her from her thoughts. Allison laughed as well, a small smile on her face. Kai sighed and shook his head. “Dad..” He said softly, embarrassed a little bit. But it did its job. Allison walked closer, and her little hand went to touch Hayden’s larger one. “Hayden..” Ally said softly, watching him. Kai could see the years melting from his dad, and he knew that he was enjoying this moment with the girls.​

Hayden gently wrapped his fingers around her hand. In a voice like a whisper, he spoke, “They tell me I have little hands. Do you think I have little hands?” He held out the other one so that it might draw Grace’s attention, and it did. She stepped forward too, in a better mood and therefore more willing to listen. More willing to try something new. Grace looked at Kaiden with a questioning glance. This was his dad? She trusted her own dad, so his dad would be okay too. Then she took his other hand. She thought they were big not little, but she was too shy to say anything. Theo smiled from where he was and shook his head. “Man, you and your dad got some sort of magic in there.”​

Allison looked at Hayden, hearing his question and looked at Grace who had come up beside her. “You don’t have little hands! You have big hands!” Ally giggled as she looked at him. She was growing more and more comfortable with them. Kai saw Grace look at him and he smiled encouragingly. Kaiden was watching this like a hawk, a warm smile on his face. That was when he heard Theo. “We do? I don’t know about that.” Kaiden said with a shrug as the door opened once more and shut, Josh freezing in place. He hadn’t been assigned a route but he did go take care of his horse. It was something that he did in the mornings to help out Cameron and James when he didn’t have a patrol. “Hello everyone. What a surprise. And who are these lovely young ladies?” Josh asked curiously looking at them.​

Hayden grinned. “They really aren’t that small, are they?” Grace was shaking her head, little giggles coming out. He kept going. “I think those people were very silly!” Grace nodded enthusiastically now. She gripped Hayden’s hand tightly and shook it. She was almost ready to say something when she heard someone from behind. She whipped around, eyes wide at yet another new person. She reached for Ally’s hand and backed away towards Kaiden. Hayden looked up and smiled. “Girls, meet Josh. Joshua, meet Allison and Grace. Our son brought them home from patrol.” He smiled at Josh knowingly. They were just having this conversation earlier this morning. Well, at least, that was what he could see coming. He did raise Kai after all. “Dear, can you do me a favor? There’s a box upstairs that is full of things I think may finally get to be used today.” Hayden did not get to keep all of Kai’s things when they moved numerous times, but he did collect more for when he inevitably had children around who might be needing something to do.​

Ally giggled looking at Hayden and shook her head too. “They were silly!” Allison agreed as she looked at Grace. When Josh appeared, Allison didn’t move but she did look at him, curiously. He was rather stern in appearance until he smiled wide. “Hello girls. It’s very nice to meet you.” Josh said as Kaiden saw Grace move towards him. He placed a hand on her shoulder and smiled. “It’s okay Grace, that is my papa, or my other dad. He’s really nice.” Kai said as Josh chuckled. “Of course dear. I’ll be right down.” Josh replied, walking past Hayden, ducked down to kiss his cheek then straightened and kept going. He walked upstairs and a few moments later came down with the box of Kaiden’s old things. He set it down beside Hayden and sat down to, legs crossed over one another. Kai watched the sight as did Ally, curiosity in her eyes. Kai knew they had to go finish their route soon, but he wanted to make sure they were all set.​

Josh was the sternest looking person aside from Maria that they had seen so far.. Grace thought that Josh was even meaner looking until he smiled. He had this strong brow line, but that was like her dad’s when he was fighting the monsters. Did Josh fight monsters? Kaiden said that it was more than him and Theo. She waited against Kaiden until Josh came back down the stairs with a box and joined Hayden on the floor. Hayden smiled so wide that it was like he had not aged more than twenty years since he did this with Kai. “Okay, we talked about what everyone called me. Hayden. But what did we call him?” He pointed to Kai. “You know his name is Kaiden. We call him Kai a lot. But you know what else I call him?” He opened the box, put his hand in, and waited for the suspense of the moment. Grace watched, intrigued, wanting to go closer but still unsure. Hayden quickly pulled his hand out at the same time that he said, “Little shark!” Out he pulled a shark puppet that he already put on his hand. It was one of those finds from clearing out apartments and houses. Hayden swam the shark around in front of the girls, and since Allison was closer, he moved it up to her and then quickly made it kiss her cheek with the loudest, silliest sound he could make. Grace laughed from where she was. Theo, the very adult person that he was, also laughed. He nudged Kai in the shoulder. “You’re watching like you just brought your own kids to their grandparents for the first time.”​

Allison was so intrigued by the box, watching him with a sharp eyed gaze. Her head tilted to the side. Ally looked at Kai when she heard Hayden ask what they called him. She shrugged her small shoulders, jumped a little at the sudden creature in his hand, a shark? She giggled though when it swam towards her and kissed her cheek. “Shark!” She laughed as she heard her sister laugh and Kai smiled so wide it hurt. Yeah, it was quickly becoming clear that he didn’t want to leave this girls at all. He looked at Theo with wide eyes. “What?” He asked, confusion in his eyes as he thought about that. But it felt right to him, for some reason. And then he remembered his partner. He needed to meet the girls tonight because he wanted to keep them at their house. He didn’t know why or how but something inside him was quickly becoming all encompassed by these girls. Like he wanted to be their dad, which was a weird but not unwelcome thought.​

After many years of playing with this particular puppet, Hayden thought that he was pretty good at pretending that his arm was a shark. He whipped it around in a comical but mostly accurate way since he was that kind of nerd and had always been. He swam the creature around until it found its way to Grace and kissed her cheek too. She squealed in delight as she took a step forward. She put her hand out tentatively to touch the puppet. Hayden swam it closer and pretended to eat her fingers. She squealed another time, giggling at the little puppet. “Again!” Theo watched as his words which were meant as a joke sunk in with Kai. “Oh man. You really do feel that way, don’t you?”​

Allison watched the creature puppet shark with fascination, her eyes wide as she did. She reached a hand out to touch it herself. “Hayden? What is a shark?” Ally asked, looking at him, her curiosity and fascination too much to ignore. Kai watched his dad play with the puppet that Hayden used with him often as he grew up. His gaze turned to Theo for a moment. “Is that bad?” He asked, his voice soft. “I don’t even know if Ezekiel would want to consider kids. But I.. I feel like they’re already my kids. Is that.. a bad thing too?” Kai asked, watching the girls and his parents. The gaze of an adoring father on his face without realizing it.​

Hayden took off the shark puppet and handed it to Allison. Grace moved to her side to touch it. He reached into the box where he kept not the first children’s book about sharks that they read all those years ago but a different one. This one was a special find. He pulled it out and opened it up to reveal a huge pop up of a shark. Well, huge for little girls. “Sharks are the most beautiful aquatic creatures in the world. Aquatic means they live in the water.” He held the book in front of him so that they could see it. Grace stared at it in amazement. Theo watched his best friend’s face, analyzed his expression, and smiled. “No, that’s not a bad thing. I think… I think that is exactly what you need.” He thought about Ezekiel. “I know we need to finish the route. What if you don’t go with me? I can grab someone else to go. You can go talk to him?” He looked at the two little girls, and Grace was looking back at Kai with this big smile on her face before she turned to the sharks again. “Or you can stay here?”​

Allison held the puppet in her hands, it was bigger than her little hands but she turned it around and looked at it. Ally held it out for Grace too, letting her sister see it. Then her gaze drew to the pop up and she blinked, amazement in her eyes. “Wow.. so pretty.” Ally said, looking at the shark. Josh smiled, watching the girls and Hayden. “Sharks are certainly majestic creatures.” Josh said, remembering all the sharks they used to see at the aquarium all those years ago. Kai looked at Theo and then at the two girls. He saw that big smile on Grace’s face and his heart was so full. He couldn’t leave them. But he needed to talk to Ezekiel. “I wish I could bring him here. But I know he’s busy at the shop. So I’ll stay here until I know he’s probably free and then talk to him.” He said, watching his parents with the two girls.​

Theo patted Kai’s shoulder. “What about you stay here with your cute little ones, and I see what I can do?” He looked back at the girls in a whole new light. Maybe they weren’t just some kids they picked up on patrol. Maybe they were his nieces now. As Hayden was explaining sharks in better detail, Grace took the puppet, and it was like it took up her whole arm. She was not sure how to move it, but her arm slinked through the air until her shark accidentally smacked into Ally. She gasped and then giggled. “Sorry!” She plopped down on the ground, sitting in front of the book. She let the puppet fall into her lap and then slowly poked at the pop up. She giggled at the feeling of the pointy paper. Theo stood up and walked out of the house. He now had several missions he needed to find a way to complete. Hayden gestured for Kai to come join them. He patted the ground as he started pulling out other toys and things from his son’s childhood. Not all of them were shark related.​

Kaiden felt the pat to his shoulder and looked at Theo. “Thank you brother.” Kai said, smiling as he looked at Theo. Then his attention turned as he saw Grace try on the shark puppet. Ally felt the puppet smack into her and she looked, giggled and smiled at her sister. “It’s okay!” Ally said as she sat beside Grace, looking at the book herself. Kai watched Theo leave before he moved over and sat where Hayden had patted the ground. “What do you think about this girls? Aren’t sharks fascinating?” Kaiden asked as Ally looked up at him. She smiled and nodded. The smile on Kai’s own face was warm, and happy and probably a little bit of love there too. So soon. But sometimes that was just what happened.​

Grace picked up the puppet again to put on her arm and rammed it straight into Kaiden’s face when he sat down. She made a ridiculous sound that was most certainly an imitation of the dramatic kiss sound that Hayden made. She giggled and did the same thing to Ally. “Shark!” Hayden put a hand on Josh’s leg and exchanged a glance that spoke all of his knowing thoughts. With Kaiden sitting on the floor looking at them like that. Bringing them to Hayden and Josh first instead of working with others? Yeah, he knew where this was going. Grace turned to Kaiden again, all smiles without that fear clouding her eyes. This was just her for the first time since their parents went away. Angels protecting them from above. “You’re a shark?” She remembered what Hayden called him. “You’re a little shark?” She raised the puppet.​

Kaiden felt the shark hit his face and he chuckled, hearing that sound. “Careful, sharks don’t kiss quite that hard.” He said but his warning came too late. Ally got a shark puppet to the face as well. She was okay with the smack but that was a little too much for the little girl. She felt tears brimming in her eyes as she sniffled. That had hurt a little more than the arm smack had. Though it was also a surprise than real hurt as well. “Allison, it’s okay. It was an accident.” Kai said as he heard Grace talking to him. The smile on her face was beautiful but the frown on Ally’s made him sigh. “Grace, sweetheart. Yes, that’s what they called me. But I need you to be careful with that shark. You hurt your sister.” Kaiden said as Ally stood up and threw herself into Kai’s lap. He wrapped his arms around her and patted her back. A sniffle sounded before she shifted so she was sitting in Kai’s lap, back to his chest. “Allison. You’re okay. Grace, what do you say?” Kai asked, his voice was not stern, but kind yet firm. Josh washed the moment before him, wrapping an arm around Hayden’s shoulders.​

Grace was so distracted by the shark and the play that she hadn’t noticed that Ally was hurt. Having never had a toy like this and being so young, she had yet to figure out the appropriate way to move her body and what amount of force to use. She immediately felt her stomach drop as Ally sniffled and Kai told her she did wrong. Tears of her own welled as she looked at Ally. She didn’t mean to hurt her. She stared at Ally as she flung herself on Kaiden and then stared at him. “I’m sorry…” she croaked through her broken voice now that she was close to crying. Be careful. She could be careful. That meant she was too rough. She grabbed Ally’s hand and then put out her other arm to ask for a hug. “I didn’t mean to…” Hayden leaned into Josh’s touch, watching proudly as his son became a father right before their eyes. He would sit there on the floor introducing random toys all day if he could watch the three of them be a family.​

Ally looked at Grace, sniffing a little bit before she smiled a little. She squeezed her sisters hand and stood up. Allison stepped into her sister’s arms and hugged her back. “I know. It’s okay Gracie.” Ally said, hugging her sister as Kai sat there watching the two hug. “Good job sweetheart.” Kaiden said, a little bit of that to both girls. Ally pulled from the hug to whisper in her sister’s ear. “Wanna dog pile Kai like we used to do Dad?” She whispered to her sister, the hurt and sadness flowing away. She knew that Grace didn’t mean it. And she also knew that they both loved dog piling their Dad so what better way to cheer her sister up and let her know that Ally wasn’t upset anymore? Josh felt Hayden lean into his touch and he smiled proudly. Their son was grown up and had two little girls that were becoming family right in front of them.​
