When Kaiden told them not to look, Grace shut her eyes as tight as she could and clung to his side. She reached her head across his chest and grabbed her sister’s hand. She wanted to make sure she still had Ally. Theo didn’t know how to answer that. “Um, I don’t know. Are there more people out here? Because if there’s more…” It was a dangerous bet to take these little ones if there were a lot more infected. “But I don’t know if we should? Also… can you ride with both of them?” ​

Ally took her sister's hand when she saw it come across Kaiden's chest and squeezed it gently. Kai looked at Theo and sighed, looking through the area. "I can put them on Diva and walk beside them if we wanted to keep going. But these trails haven't been done in so long that I don't know how many more infected are around. I'm worried there is more." Kaiden admitted, holding the two girls close. "As for riding with both of them, I don't know. I don't think I can." Kai admitted, sighing roughly.​

Theo bit his cheek as he looked at the rest of the route. They hadn’t gotten that far. It seemed too risky. Far too risky to keep them as they traveled through this circle, even if it was shorter. “Okay, what if we go back early. Maria isn’t going to kill us if we tell her what happened. I’m just not sure… I’m not sure what to do with them.” He looked at these little girls, and he wanted to help, but he didn’t have the same paternal instincts as Kai. “And then maybe we can come back out here when we get them somewhere safe? Finish the route?” He was thinking of a thousand different things. “One of them can ride with me?” He looked back at the little girls. “Though they seem attached to you.” Grace finally opened her eyes and was staring at Centaur like it was the most bizarre thing she had ever seen. It probably was.​

Kaiden hummed for a moment, thinking as he stood there. "Okay, so here is what we're going to do. We'll go back to Jackson, we'll talk to Maria and then we will see my dads. I'm sure dad would be happy to watch them while we finish the route quickly." Kaiden said, before he looked at the two of them. He saw Grace looking at Centaur and chuckled softly. "Okay, girls? I'm going to set you down, and I'm going to set one of you with Theo. We cannot ride back with three on one horse." Kaiden said, as he looked at the two. Allison looked at Theo, then at Kaiden. She didn't know either of them, but she trusted Kaiden. "I- I can go with him." Ally offered, knowing how her sister was. She wasn't as.. overwhelmed at the moment.​

Grace didn’t want to be put down, and she certainly didn’t want to go with someone else. She immediately latched onto Kaiden’s leg, having now decided that she trusted him to save them from the monsters. “No!” She grabbed at her sister and tried to pull her close. She hated the idea of being away from her. Grace didn’t want to be alone. She was so scared of being alone. Theo tried not to sigh or groan or something. “It’s okay. I promise I’m not that scary. I took out all the bad guys for us so we don’t get attacked.” He shook his head. “Plus, whoever rides with me gets to be the tallest person in the world. Look how big Centaur is. He’s huge!” Grace still didn’t like the idea of being split.​

Kaiden had set the two down when he heard Grace's words, and felt her latch onto his leg. Ally felt Grace grab her arm and she was pulled close. Kaiden gently pulled her little arms off his leg so he could kneel down and look at them. He heard Theo's words and Ally looked at him too. "Grace, sweetheart, we need to do this. It's for our safety and I promise the moment we get to town, you two won't be away from each other. Can you be a brave princess for me so we can get to town?" Kai asked, his hands on her shoulders. "Ally will be right beside us the whole time as well and Theo will keep her safe."​

This was so much. Monsters, new people, giant beasts, being apart from her sister. Where were their parents? Tears fell down Grace’s cheeks as he spoke. His voice was soothing. It was strong and sure but gentle. It reminded her of her father. She wanted her father. She looked at Ally, and her sister was brave. She didn’t feel like the brave princess. Her little hands fell to her side and she nodded. “Okay,” she said quietly. Theo grinned at Allison. “You ready to ride a horse? It’s so fun. You ever done that before?” He walked over to Centaur and stroked his neck. “Buddy, we have a little one. So I need you not to be so tall.” He laughed a little. “You want me to lift you up or do you want him to?” He could tell that they already liked Kai. Well who wouldn’t? ​

Kai didn’t like seeing those tears down her cheeks. He brought his hands up and wiped the tears away. “That’s my girl. My brave girl.” Kaiden said, looking at her. “Okay. I’m going to pick you up and come over here.” He said, picking Grace up as he stood. Kaiden walked over to Diva who sniffed at the little girl. “This is Diva, she’s going to take us to safety. Are you okay if I set you on her? I’ll be right up behind you in a moment.” Kai said. Allison looked at Theo, watching Kaiden take her sister. She nodded to him. “Yes. You can pick me up.” Ally said, raising her arms up. She didn’t mind him picking her up. Ally could sense that Theo was just as kind as Kaiden.​

My girl. Grace felt something swell inside her that her young mind could not understand. She liked that. It was like her father, and she liked that even more. She held her breath when he picked her up and moved her close to Diva. At first, she was afraid and cowered back into Kai as the horse sniffed her. Brave girl. She could be brave. She stared at the big nostrils and slowly touched Diva’s nose before immediately drawing her hand back. She nodded again. Up on the horse. Theo swooped in with a smile and hefted her to his hip first. “Okay, this is going to be weird. See this?” He patted the saddle. “That’s where we sit. So I need you to hold on right here as I get you up, okay? Because then I have to get up too and you have to hold on. But you’re super strong right?” ​

Kaiden noticed that Grace had cowered back into him when Diva sniffed at her. “It’s okay.” Kai said softly as he saw her slowly touch Diva’s nose before pulling her hand away. “Okay brave girl, I’m going to sit you up in the saddle, can you hold that little horn for me?” Kaiden asked as he hefted Grace up and into the saddle, leaving enough room for him. Once she was settled, he climbed up and wrapped an arm around her chest, holding her securely and the other had took up the reins. He looked over at Theo and waited. Allison looked at the saddle and nodded. “I’m strong.” She said with a determined gaze. When he set her in the saddle, Ally would hold on.​

Grace put both of her little hands on that little horn and held it like the world might end if she didn’t. She felt a little unstable, and that was scary, but then all of that went away as soon as she had Kaiden’s arms around her. She looked up at him from behind, and he was so big and tall. He was like this wall behind her, and she knew that she was safe. No monsters could hurt her. He told her that their parents were angels now, protecting them from above. He was an angel here, protecting them where they were. Theo set Allison up on the saddle, commending her with, “You look like you were born to ride!” Then he climbed up behind her, putting both arms firmly to her sides as he grabbed the reins. “Are you ready for the ride of a lifetime?” He patted Centaur’s neck. “Centaur here is the strongest horse in the whole world, so that means you must be pretty strong.” He pointed to the others. “And look at your sister. You two are amazing.” Feeling secure now, Theo called over to Kai. “Alright, back to Jackson.”​

Kaiden smiled at Grace and looked over at Theo. Then his attention tuned back to Grace. “You are such a brave girl. You ready?” He said, before he heard Theo call to him. “Let’s get moving.” Kaiden said, turning Diva towards the start of the patrol route and headed back to Jackson. Allison felt strong arms on either side of her and she giggled at the words. “Strong?” She asked, feeling Centaur move underneath her. It was actually really cool to the young girl, her eyes wide as she sat there. Her little hands were on the horn as she watched the scenery. As they walked, Kai looked down at Grace. “How are you doing princess?” Kai asked as he looked over at Allison. The little one was in awe, looking down at the horse, and she even moved one hand off the horn and reached down to touch the knot closest to her.​

At first, the movement was scary. She jumped as Diva started walking and clung to Kai’s arm. Then slowly she released and moved her hands back to the horn, especially as she looked over at her sister who was doing that. She felt so high up. Her eyes were wide with wonder as she watched everything move by. She looked up when Kai spoke to her, and she almost smiled. “So big,” she said as she looked back at the world from this new perspective. She didn’t dare move her hands again. Not yet. Theo laughed as they rode along. “Ah, you see his little top knots? Aren’t they the cutest?” Centaur whinnied, moving his head around me. “Alright, you’re right. Aren’t they dignified and not at all cute, because he’s a strong horse and not at all cute?” He leaned in and stage whispered, “he’s totally cute though.” He lowered one hand to pat Centaur and rub his neck before securing them again.​

Kaiden’s world was slowly changing as he felt Grace cling to his arm. At first his world was his dad, then as he grew it became his fathers, then he met Ezekiel and after a little while, he was his world. Now his world expanded again, slowly capturing these two little girls in it. He saw those eyes look at him, wide with wonder as he smiled. “Isn’t it so big?” He asked as they came to the top of the hill where they could see Jackson spread out below them. “Look at that Grace. Isn’t it pretty?” Kai asked. Allison giggled as she nodded to Theo. “So cool.” She whispered. “And cute.” Allison agreed with a smile on her face.​

Theo slowed Centaur for a moment at the top of that hill so that they could look at the sprawling town of Jackson. He grinned as he heard the gasp from the other horse where Grace was staring out at the lights. She had never seen something like that. She looked at Kai first and then over at her sister. “Ally!” She couldn’t say anything else, because she was so awestruck. She pawed at Kai’s arm with one of her tiny hands. “Are we going there?” Since they weren’t moving, Theo dropped his grip on the little one so that he could point out at the city. “That right there is the best place I have ever been. Best place for brave and strong little girls.”​

Allison had been in big cities a couple of times. But their parents tried to stick to small towns and forests. They’d left Hartford when Ally and Grace were a year old. And they’d been traveling since then. “Gracie! Look!” Ally cried out, her face lighting up as she looked at the town. Kai felt the pawing on his arm and chuckled softly. “Yes we are. That’s your new home. It’s the best place in the world.” Kaiden said, as he urged Diva forward after a few moments. He needed to talk to his partner soon. There was no way he wanted to leave these little girls, or find them somewhere else to live in town. Allison looked up at Theo, eyes wide and then at the town. “Wow! Is that where we’re going?”​

Theo nodded. “For sure that’s where we are going. You’re gonna love it. I promise.” He readjusted so that he could hold Allison up and start moving Centaur down the hill and towards Jackson. Grace was amazed. It looked so cool with all the lights that shone so bright. Had she ever seen lights? She couldn’t remember. It was hard to remember that. “Are there monsters?” she asked a little wary. There were always monsters everywhere that their parents took them. They tried to get away from the monsters, and they usually did. But not this time. There were so many of them this time. She did not want to go to another place with monsters. Would her parents be there? ​

Allison was nervous, she didn’t know this place. “We won’t see any monsters there right?” Ally asked as she felt Centaur moving again. Her eyes were wide with wonder as she watched the town getting bigger and bigger. Every other place they went had monsters there. Kaiden looked at the town then flicked his gaze to Grace when she asked. “No. There are no monsters there.” Kaiden said. “There will never be monsters because Theo and I along with others make sure of it.” Kaiden added as they came to the bottom of the hill and headed towards the gate.​

“No monsters?” Grace wanted to believe that. She didn’t want any more of them. They were big and scary. They were loud. And then wanted to eat her! She knew it. They looked like people, and that was even scarier. Sometimes, she had nightmares about them, and she woke up screaming and crying, and her mom had to rock her back to sleep. Where was her mom? At least she had Kaiden who was like an angel. Maybe he was an angel. Angels didn’t like monsters. “Nope!” Theo happily exclaimed as they made their way closer to the gate. “You hear that? Kai and I are like protectors. And it’s a whole bunch of us. We make sure everyone inside that big town is safe from all dangers. Nothing can get you when you’re in there.” Grace thought about the words of both Kai and Theo, and she believed them. All those monsters that attacked them went away when the two men came. Maybe they were safe.​

Kaiden nodded his head as they got closer. “Like Theo said, we’ll keep you and your sister safe like we keep everyone else.” He said with a smile on his face. Allison looked at the two men, and she remembered how they’d gotten rid of the monsters there. Her eyes turned to look at Kai like he was a hero. Him and Theo. They were both heroes that saved them. The huge gate swung open as the four entered the town. Maria was there, having been checking on something, and looked up confused. More new people? Oh two little ones. “Kaiden? Theo? What’s going on? Who are they?” She asked as Kaiden stopped Diva just inside. “This is Allison and Grace. We saved them from a small horde. Their parents..” Kaiden stopped talking and sighed. “We did not finish our route. We were going to drop these two girls with dad and papa, so we could finish it.”​

When the gate swung open, Grace gasped again. That was the most amazing thing she had ever seen. Scary and amazing. Maria was also scary. Not scary like the monsters. She was a different kind of scary. She was a new person, and her voice sounded commanding. Grace tried to melt as far back into Kaiden as possible when they were closer to her. “Hey, Allison. That is Maria. She’s totally in charge of the town. She’s our leader. Don’t let her tell you she isn’t, because she definitely is. We’re gonna go meet some other people who you’re gonna love.” He nodded to Maria and sent her a large sign language thank you as they rode passed. “We promise promise promise to finish it! We just have to save some cuties first!” He laughed and gently squeezed Allison’s sides. “That’s you. Now we have to go find Kai’s dads. You think they’re still at home, Kai?” He rode to the stables where they probably didn’t need to do the full unload, but they didn’t need to be walking around on a horse the whole time. “CAMERON!” Theo called. “I require your assistance as best horse wrangler!”​

Maria rolled her eyes at Theo but a smile was on her face. She had gotten used to him and she waved at the two girls. Allison looked at her and waved back shyly. She heard Theo and giggled at the squeeze to her sides. Kai moved on, having heard Grace’s gasp. “Welcome to Jackson princess. And you’re going to see the two best men here. They’re pretty awesome.” Kaiden said as he heard Theo. “I think Dad is home but I can’t remember if Papa had a patrol too. So I’m not sure.” Kaiden said as they stopped outside the stables. Cameron heard Theo and ducked outside. “What do you need help with now Theo?” Cameron asked before he saw the two girls. “Can you help us get them down?” Kai asked as Cam nodded and walked over to Theo and Allison first. He opened his arms and took Allison down. She stood there beside Centaur as Cam went to Kai and Grace. “You can go with him so I can get down too. It’ll be okay.” Kaiden said softly.​

As long as Hayden was home, they could continue on with the plan. It was still a short route, so as long as they didn’t take too long getting the girls situated with him, they could do the rest before dark. “And this is Cameron. Cam is the only person in the world who can do horse magic. And look, he can do little girl magic too!” As soon as Allison was down, Theo hopped down too. “We aren’t going to be here long. We need to finish the route as soon as we can get the girls somewhere safe and comfortable.” Grace held onto Kai’s arms, shaking her head fervently. This new person, in being new, was also scary. She didn’t want to go with anyone else. She didn’t know if it would be okay at all. She was on the verge of tears again. What if she lost her angel too?​

Allison looked up at Cameron and smiled. She had always been.. more extroverted and liked people than her sister. Kaiden saw Grace shake her head and felt her hold onto his arms. He shifted in the saddle so he could really look at her. “Grace. Princess. It’s okay. Really. I wouldn’t lie to you. Cameron here is just like Theo but instead he cares for Diva and others like her. He’s really sweet.” Kaiden said softly. “Hello there. It’s nice to meet you. Grace was it? I promise I’m not as scary as I look.” Cameron said, giving her a goofy grin and held his hands out. “Kaiden will be right behind you in getting down too.”​

Cameron didn’t sound that scary. He had a nice voice. He had a soft face too, kind of like how Kaiden looked when he smiled. Grace looked at her hero and then back at Cameron. If Kaiden trusted him, then he was okay. So finally she nodded and allowed him to reach for her and bring her down to the ground. She immediately turned to watch and make sure that Kaiden came down too. She didn’t like being away from him. He felt safe. She wanted to be safe. Theo joined Allison and Grace as well now that he was down from his giant horse. It did always take a little longer than he wanted it to. “You two are so good at this. Are you saying you’ve never ridden horses before? Because you’re both naturals!”​
