Kai always felt so small on his horse versus the giant one his partner stole away when they’d left Seattle. He looked at Theo and nodded as he mounted his own shorter horse. “Sounds good. Haven’t checked that neighborhood in a while.” Kaiden said, waiting for Theo to get in before they could head to the gate.

Alex chuckled as they walked. “Hey, naps are important.” Alex said with a smile as they got into their room. He hugged Nate back, hearing his words. “Anything for you my love.” Alex said as Nate pulled away. He followed Nate and climbed onto the bed, arms going to pull Nate to him with a tired smile. He wasn’t going to stay awake long.​

Theo mounted the horse, which had taken a while for him to perfect with Centaur being so big, and pointed to Cam. “You’re fabulous. Name your price for being so fabulous. Not right now though.” He nodded to Kaiden. “I’ll forget. Think about it while we’re out.” He gripped the reins and started moving out to the gate. “I think it’s been a while since anyone really checked that neighborhood. When that stomach virus was floating around, I think it kept getting people, and we prioritized some of the other areas instead.”

Nate did not resist the pull. In fact, he assisted by joining in the cuddle immediately. His arm slung over Alex as he nestled close. He yawned loudly, and even though he probably could have said more, he didn’t. Instead, he closed his eyes and let his mind drift to all the kind people in this town who already wanted to keep them. Keep them as family. Eventually, he fell asleep.​

Cameron shook his head as he watched them head out. As they got to the gate, Kai nodded. “That must be why Maria put us on it. Really should’ve been checked a while ago. I can only imagine how many infected will be there.” He said as the gate opened and let them out after handing them both rifles. He sighed softly, slinging his gun on his back. “Race ya to the route start?” Kai asked, looking at Theo with a grin.​

That was such a good point. So many infected. He grabbed the rifle and the extra clips of ammo and shook his head. This was going to be some day. “I think we may be breaking that ‘no injuries’ promise you made.” He too slung his rifle over his back and smiled wide. Centaur was not necessarily the fastest horse, but he was powerful and he loved to prove his worth. He didn’t always win when they raced. In fact, he usually didn’t. He did, however, hold his own whenever they came across situations that weren’t so pleasant. “You’re on!” He dug his heels into Centaur’s side, and they were off.​

Kaiden shrugged, knowing that Theo was probably right. This would be some patrol. He felt the grin grow on his face as he looked at Theo, hearing him. “Yes!” He said, pressing his heels into Diva’s side. The young mare was eager to run and she was part thoroughbred which helped her speed. He liked her for her personality, spitfire and stubborn. The route they were doing as the old suburban neighborhood of Jackson, away from the city and just close enough to the commune to keep an eye on it. It started at the bottom of the hill near another route, too. He could see the start as he urged Diva on. “I’m going to win brother!”​

“Not if we can help it!” Theo gripped the reins so tight that his fingers hurt. This was the fun part of patrolling. They had the freedom to do things like race to the start. As much as Theo loved to play, and as much as Centaur wanted to run and work, they both knew that Diva was the faster horse. They both knew that she and Kai were going to win, because already Centaur’s bulky body was losing the speed that he could push out in bursts. “Come on, buddy. Use those muscles!” They were so close to the start, and honestly, he was shocked to see how close he was to Kai, who was still ahead though..​

Kai heard Theo and he could see the start up ahead. But Diva was slowing down a little. He urged her on as he saw Theo creeping up behind them. “Come on girl. You can do it!” He said, patting her neck as she ran. Then Diva spooked to the right, slowing their run and it took all Kai had to stay on. It also meant that Theo would win their race as Diva came to a stop, the patrol route a few yards away. Kaiden slipped off as Diva pawed the ground. “You’re okay girl. Nothings there.”​

Shockingly, they were not only keeping up but slowly gaining on them. Theo had no idea how this was happening, but he took the opportunity. “Come on, man, we are so close.” He urged Centaur a little more, eyes going wide as Diva suddenly stopped. Theo was not about to be able to stop Centaur when his stubborn self was on a mission, so he kept going, winning the race as he slowed past the start of the route, and managed to eventually turn around. “What happened?” he called back to Kai.​

Kaiden had just gotten Diva settled down when he heard Theo’s words. “She spooked to the side. We’re good now.” Kaiden said, mounting her once more. He urged her forward, patting her neck. “Alright. Ready to get this patrol started?” Kai asked as he looked at Theo, walking up beside him. “And I want you to know, you only won because she spooked, we totally would’ve beat you.” Kai said with a chuckle as he looked at Theo.​

Now knowing that everything was okay, Theo could laugh again. “Sure, you keep telling yourself that.” He knew it was true, but he could play anyway. “Alright, lets do this.” He settled Centaur to a nice leisurely walk, which the horse was not in favor of, and started paying more attention to the patrol than to the game. It was one of the neighborhoods around Jackson like any of the rest, though this one was luckily not as broken down as some others. It did, however, sit in such a place that infected seemed to either be drawn to or got lost in, because every time they came through, there was more.​

Kai chuckled as he nodded. “I will.” He said with a grin on his face. Diva was happy to walk leisurely, she enjoyed that same as she enjoyed a nice run. He looked around as they entered the neighborhood. This was a short route, a big circle neighborhood. He looked up ahead to see a runner stumbling into a house. “Theo.” He whispered, stopping them and pointing. He dismounted and tied Diva up, pulling his rifle off his back. He had a suppressor on it as always just in case they needed silent shots.​

Theo watched as the runner disappeared into the building and he sighed. So soon. He slipped off the horse and tied him up with a, “You be a good boy and stomp all the bad guys who come close, okay?” He rubbed Centaur’s face and made his way to the house, pulling down his rifle. He too had a suppressor. He moved to the front door which was wide open. So many of these places were. He first checked around the front yard to see if there were any others around. None that he could see, though eh could hear at least two inside. He lifted his fingers to say as much to Kai silently as he slipped inside the building.​

Kai patted Diva’s neck gently before he moved away from her and followed Theo. He saw the lifted fingers and nodded. As he entered the building himself, he covered his nose. Something had been killed recently, and he feared it was what had drawn in the runner. He tapped Theo’s shoulder and showed the trail of blood leading to a pair of bodies. And both runners were on it. He could hear more coming. And was that.. crying? His heart lurched as he aimed his rifle, firing at one runner and then he heard a screech behind him and he turned and fired at one that had been heading for him.​

It smelled absolutely horrendous in the house when they entered. Theo knew that smell all too well. His hand covered his mouth as his eyes followed the trail, and he saw the bodies with the runners over them. He could only hope that they were dead and not agonizingly turning into these things. He shot the second runner, head whipping behind them to see the one that Kai shot. He stepped quickly towards the bodies and nodded solemnly. Dead. They were not pleasant deaths. His ears pricked at the sound of something else. Maybe crying. More people? It had been a while since they found people. First Alex and Nate yesterday on Cam and Em’s route and now more? That was surprisingly a lot of people. He moved back to the front door to see what was on its way. The answer was at least two more runners and possibly a clicker. Great. Thankfully the smell of the house overwhelmed the smell of the horses. Granted, Centaur looked like he was about ready to murder if needed to. He turned back and pointed towards the sound of the crying. And possibly.. footsteps? Someone was moving, but it sounded so faint.​

Spoiler: Allison & Grace

Kaiden looked at Theo, seeing him shoot the other runner then head towards the front of the house. He saw the point and Kai nodded, heading towards the door. A quiet voice echoed inside. “Shh. Grace!” He managed to hear. And he moved the bodies aside carefully and opened the door. What he saw inside was heartbreaking, two young twin girls sat near the foot of the bed, one holding the other. Kai stepped inside as Allison, the one holding the other, looked up at him in fear. “L- Leave us alone!” She managed to get out. Kaiden was not about to do that. He could surmise that their parents were the bodies in front of the door. “It’s okay. I’m not going to hurt you. My names Kaiden. I’m going to help you.” He said, extending his hand out. Kai felt something protective towards these girls and he absolutely wasn’t going to leave them here. Not when their parents were, gone.​

The little girl being held started crying even harder as soon as Kaiden opened the door. She held onto her sister as tight as she could manage while shaking so intensely. She hid her face in her sister’s side and tried not to see the things that were attacking them. Theo stepped over to Kai, hearing that harder cry, and his eyes grew wide. These two were not old. They were little. So little. He turned around as he heard more infected approaching. “I’ve got it.” He moved back determined to keep the infected from getting in. He ran to the door and shot down the two infected that were close. The clicker however was more erratic. No worries, he could take care of it.​

Kaiden’s heart broke hearing that harder cry and he looked back at Theo. He was certain his eyes were distressed and wide. Kaiden breathed in and out, and then crouched down to one knee. He slipped his rifle on his back and looked at them. “Hey, shh. It’s okay. I won’t hurt you. Come here. I won’t let them hurt you either. Okay?” Kai said, looking between them. They were so little, so young. And it was like a light switched on in his mind. He understood his father’s so much better now. Kai held his arms out, and Allison looked at him, distrust and confusion in her eyes. But there was something about this man that seemed calming. “My name is Allison. And this is my sister Grace. Do.. do you know where our parents are?” She asked softly, and Kaiden looked behind him. “They are.. angels now. Protecting you from above. If you come with me, we can go somewhere safe. Like they’d want you to be. How’s that sound?”​

Grace was the younger of the twins. She was only younger by about a minute, but she still felt like she was the younger one. She was not necessarily less trusting but she was easily overwhelmed. The monsters that swarmed them overwhelmed her so fast. This man who bent down in front of them was scary, because he was new. She didn’t know him, and that was terrifying. But he didn’t look like the monsters. He didn’t try to run after them like the other monsters. When her sister spoke, she cried a little less. If Ally trusted him, could she? “A-angels?” she asked, still clinging to her sister. A loud screech came from somewhere beyond the walls of the room, and she jumped, running back into a corner of the room. She crouched down and pulled her knees to her face and her hands over her ears. Theo had just gotten rid of the clicker on the other side.​

He looked between the two of them, his eyes soft. Kai heard Grace speak and he nodded before the screech of a dying clicker echoed around them. Ally jumped and her sister was gone from her arms. Kai moved slowly, walking with his hands out towards the young one all tucked into a corner. He knelt in front of her and placed a comforting hand on her knee. “Hey little princess. You’re being so brave. If you come with me, we can get you away from these monsters. Both of you. Two very brave princesses.” Kaiden said as Ally looked at him then at Grace. “Gracie?” She asked her sister, walking over and kneeling beside her. “What do you wanna do?” Allison would never leave her sister but.. something about this man and his caring nature was calming. Almost like their dad.​

Everything was so loud, and she didn’t know what it meant that Mom and Dad were angels now. She knew about the angels. Their mom talked about them sometimes. But she didn’t know how they became angels. She peeked through her fingers at the man who was kneeling in front of her. He wasn’t as scary she didn’t think. His face was soft. She looked at Ally, confused and scared. Then she looked back at the man who reminded her of some of the nice people that they met and never saw again. She wanted to be away from the monsters. She slowly lowered her hands. Considering. Then her little hands grabbed at his big hand and held on tight. “You can make the monsters go away?”​

Kaiden saw her peek through her fingers, and he heard Allison talking to her. Ally was a little confused too, all she remembered was her Mom and Dad telling them to stay in the room and they’d be back. They never came back. Kai felt her little hands grab onto his hand. “Yes I can.” He said, moving his other hand and placed it on her other knee. “Can I pick you up princess?” Kaiden asked Grace as he looked at them. Allison looked at them as she looked at the door. She didn’t know if there were any monsters but she trusted him.​

He could make the monsters go away, and that was all that Grace wanted right now. She also wanted her parents, yes, but not as much as she wanted to be away from the monsters. It was too much for her little mind. She stared at this man who offered her rescue, and in that moment, she thought that he might be a hero like the stories their parents would tell them. She nodded, sniffling from the tears that fell down her cheeks. “Ally too?” She didn’t want her to have to be with the monsters. Theo popped his head in, and Grace shoved herself against Kaiden to hide. Theo frowned. “Sorry. Just coming to say we’re clear out here. They’re all gone.”​

Kaiden smiled, seeing her nod and caught the sniffle. “Ally too.” He promised and he leaned his hand in to wipe away her tears when he felt her shove herself into his side. He looked back behind him seeing Theo. “Okay. Thank you.” He said before he looked at Grace. “It’s okay princess. That’s Theo. He’s my brother. Now I’m going to pick you both up.” Kaiden said, he shifted them so he could wrap an arm around them and stood up, his aim to have one girl on each hip. “Theo. Can you watch us so we can make it to the horses?” Kai asked, his arm shifted down to hold the two girls. Allison’s arm wrapped around his back and chest, holding onto him.​

Grace clung to Kai, so much more afraid of everything else than him. She looked at her sister and felt a little better since she seemed to also be okay with Kaiden. As held onto the layers of clothing as he lifted them into the air, sitting on his hip. She pressed her face into his side, burying one eye. Theo nodded and moved out of the room. It probably looked scary in there with all the dead infected. Inside were quite a few and outside were even more. Thankfully, the corpses of who he could only assume were their parents were not easily seen or recognizable especially when they were over here. He paused and looked at Kai with the two girls on his hips. “It’s bad out here man. But I don’t see anymore. Outside is rough too. Still don’t see any more. A couple from adjacent houses came by, so I know those houses are probably clear now.” He walked forward, making sure he was right. He untied Kai’s horse first and then his own. ​

Kaiden felt Grace clinging to him, and even Allison ducked her head into his side too, she didn't want to see the monsters. He looked at Theo, nodding and followed him outside. "Don't look girls." Kai whispered, walking over to the horses. He was thankful that Theo untied his own horse first. "Theo, should we continue on with them or should we head back to Jackson?" Kai asked, he wasn't sure but he knew that he'd protect these two with his life. He was very quickly growing attached to the two little ones.​
