Alex frowned when he heard Nate’s response. He squeezed his hands, leaned forward and placed forehead to forehead. “You deserve all of my love. And I will remind you of that time and time again.” Alex told him, kissing him gently. He pulled away but their foreheads were still touching. “We’re going to our farmhouse, having our dream and retiring from the saving the world.” Alex said firmly, a warm smile on his face. Alex would be there for Nate, always.

“I know.” Nate knew. “I know.” Or at least he tried to know this. He tried to remember what Alex told him. He tried to remember who he was. And it was getting easier for now. Maybe. When he didn’t think about it too much. “You really think this Jackson place is the one to go to? What do we even know about it?” Nothing really. They knew nothing. How did they knew that this would not happen all over again to them?

Alex heard Nate, listened to him and sighed softly. "I think so. A small community? I know we don't know much about it, perhaps on our travels we can learn more? Who knows what we'll find." Alex said, though he knew that they didn't know much about it. "And if Jackson doesn't work out, we can find somewhere else until we find a place suitable for our farmhouse dream."

Small community meant not a large city, and they were both done with those. Nate remembered when the cities were nothing for them. They were just another place. But now he didn’t want to ever go by them again. He nodded, agreeing. Finally taking it all in. “Then tomorrow we find Jackson. I’m ready for this part of our lives to be done with.”

Alex nodded, hearing Nate and chuckled softly. "Tomorrow we head for Jackson. Today we relax and rest. I'm more than ready to put this entire month to rest and make new memories." Alex agreed, as he looked at Nate, kissing his forehead. "So. What else would you like to do before we turn in for the night?" Alex asked, smiling at Nate softly.

Nate didn’t know how to answer that. He didn’t know what else to do. His mind felt like it was being blocked by something, and that was probably him. He knew it was him. He knew that right now he was his own worst enemy. That didn’t make it easier to deal with. “Just hold me?” He didn’t want to sound and be so pitiful, but he was. He couldn’t keep it away. He wanted to be strong, but being strong hurt. When he was strong, he remembered everything else, and then he was back to being little and weak again.

Alex looked at Nate as he waited patiently for an answer. He heard his words, his heart hurting a little at the pitiful part of his voice. He wrapped his arms around Nate and picked him up in his arms. "I've got you." Alex whispered as he walked them to the bed, set Nate down and then crawled onto the bed and wrapped him up in his arms. "I'll hold you forever. I love you." Alex whispered, holding him close.

Nate held his breath as Alex moved him out of fear that he would start crying again. He took in one, huge gulp of air and did the same as Alex let him go while he got himself situated as well. As soon as he felt those protective arms again, he let it out. They were going to be okay. Everything could be okay when he had Alex. He curled into him like he couldn’t straighten. Maybe he couldn’t. At least not now. “I love you too,” he whispered from where he buried his head in Alex’s chest. More than anything in the world.

Alex heard the breath leave Nate when he wrapped him up in his arms. He felt Nate curl into him and he just held him close. He heard the whisper and smiled softly. Alex kissed the top of Nate's head and then curled around him. A protective shield against the scary world they lived in. A moment of peace and relaxing calm that they needed after what they'd endured.

Turns out that Nate was turning in for the night now and not doing something else. All of this made him so exhausted, and as much as he loved the idea of taking the time to rest and play games and be the two of them again, he couldn’t keep it up. He was too exhausted for it. As he curled into Alex, his breathing slowed, and his body shut down. He fell asleep almost immediately after. If he could have chosen, that was not what he would have done, but sometimes that was not how the world worked. He slept, and he hoped he did not dream this time.

As Alex held onto Nate, hearing his breathing slow and felt the other curl into him. Alex rubbed his back as he too felt his own body shut down. It had been a very emotional day, past few days, week. At this point time meant nothing to him. Alex kissed the top of Nate’s head and his own eyes closed as he fell asleep as well. Was it too early to turn in? Maybe. But it didn’t matter to him.

Nate slept for a long time. He dreamed as he always dreamed, but he didn’t remember the dreams. He didn’t even move really. He was still as he slept. He did not wake up. He did not toss. He just slept. He slept against Alex the best he had in a while. Maybe the best he would in a while. He didn’t know. He let it all turn off and go away. When he woke, it was the next day. He could see the light coming in through the window. He didn’t know how far into the day or if Alex was awake. He wasn’t even sure he knew who he was. It was that kind of morning.

Alex slept well, not moving in his sleep. No nightmares or dreams haunted him for the first time in a few days. He just held onto Nate and slept. The next morning he woke up to notice that Nate was awake as well. "Mmm. Good morning baby." Alex's voice was soft and thick with sleep but his eyes were awake as he looked at his partner. "How uh.. how did you sleep?"

Nate slowly processed the day as Alex spoke. He turned his attention to his partner and soaked him in. “Fine,” he answered, because that was true. “Better than other nights. I don’t remember waking up, so that’s a good sign right?” He stayed still against Alex for a little while longer before saying, “We should go.” He had not been awake long, had only just remembered who he was, and he was already trying to move.

Alex listened to Nate and nodded, that was better than nothing. "That's definitely a good sign." Alex agreed as he laid there, letting himself wake up. "We can go, once we wake up a little more and have some food. We aren't in a hurry remember?" Alex told him, shifting in bed and stretching a little as he looked at Nate with a soft smile.

At some point, Alex took over the role of making sure they were going to stay alive, and Nate didn’t know how he felt about that. That was supposed to be his job. He was supposed to tell Alex to slow down and not put so much pressure on his tweaked back. He was supposed to tell him that he needed to rest or he would run out of gas. Now the roles were flopped. Nate stopped moving and sat back down. “Oh, you don’t want to starve today. Yeah, okay, I guess I can get behind that.” He smiled a little. “Shall we have breakfast in bed?”

Alex didn't know when he'd become the person keeping them alive, but he just fell into it. "I really don't wanna starve today no. So let me grab our breakfast and I'll be right back." Alex said, kissing the top of Nate's head. He shifted off the bed, grabbed the can of green beans and spoons before joining him back on the bed. He held the can out with a smile and handed him a spoon. "Breakfast in bed my love."

Nate watched him go like he was watching a miracle, and he was. Alex was his miracle. His guide. His light. His Monkey Man. When he returned, Nate had to pry his eyes away before he looked like a creep for staring like that. He took the spoon with a, “Why thank you kind sir,” and raised it as though it were a toast. “To breakfast in bed and not starving today.”

Alex smiled as he looked at Nate, and heard the thank you. "You're welcome my love." Alex said as he noticed Nate raise the spoon and chuckled softly. "To not starving and enjoying breakfast in bed." He agreed as he took a bite of the green beans. Yesterday had been nice, a chance to just relax and enjoy each other's company. "You wanna know something kind of silly and weird? I was actually friends with a couple wolves." Alex admitted as he ate another bite.

As Nate ate he narrowed his eyes at this new revelation. “What?” Those people who just stole him away and cut into him because of who he was and treated him like he was the lowest of the low even though he did nothing to them at all? “How exactly were you friends with a couple of them? That’s seems like not silly and weird but impossible?” Because it was impossible. He could never be friends with people who did that to other people.

Alex saw the narrowed eyes and blushed a little as he took another bite before he cleaned his spoon and tucked it away. "Yeah. It certainly sounds impossible. But.. they were different than the other wolves. We met when I was sixteen on my first patrol. These two didn't fight us like normal wolves would've." Alex explained as he rubbed the back of his neck. "In fact, they were one of the reasons I left my people in the end."

Nate ate as he watched Alex try to explain something that was clearly a bit strange for them both given the circumstances of what they had just gone through. Wolves that did not attack even though it seemed like all of them did. When Nate was in their midst, even for just those few moments, none of those people were so kind. They all blindly followed beliefs. He shouldn’t be so judgmental as he too was like that. He was going to try not to be so bad. Starting now. He reached a hand out to touch Alex’s cheek. Cup it. “They taught you not to blindly follow.” It was not a question. Nate understood. In a world of darkness, there was a light. He knew about that. “Still sounds a bit crazy, but one of my favorite people was a FEDRA officer once in his life, so maybe crazy is okay.”

Alex looked at Nate as he swallowed a little. He felt the hand touch his cheek, cup it and nodded. "That's exactly what they did." He replied as he smiled at Nate. "See. Sometimes the people we least expect are the ones we need in our life." Alex said as he tucked away the food. "We were meant to meet Kaleb and Carlos, as I was meant to meet Kai and Theo. Those were the wolves' names." Alex explained as he shifted to the edge of the bed. "I think it's time to get moving, what do you think?"

Kai and Theo. Part of Nate wished he had met these wolves that would not have hurt them like the rest did. As much as he wanted to believe in people like he used to, they did not save Alex from what he had to go through. They did not stop the rest from doing what they did to all of those prisoners. Nate knew that it was unfair to assume that these people had the power to stop such atrocities. Maybe they were trying to do that somehow. Maybe they didn’t know. Maybe. Nate wished that he knew. “I think that I am ready to find the next part of our life.” He packed up anything that needed it and placed his bag on his back. The determination would not last, but for now, he was ready.

Alex did miss his friends, they were probably the only things he missed about Seattle honestly. He always wondered what had happened to them when he'd left. As Alex stood up from the bed, he grabbed his pack and slipped it on his back. He nodded, hearing Nate's words and smiled. "Me too." He said, holding out a hand for Nate. "Let's go find our farmhouse."
