Nathaniel Matthews
Former Firefly| 21 | Current location ;; Oregon

Nate stared at this offering of a hand and wondered if he deserved that. It was just a fraction of a second. He remembered every person that he killed trying to save Alex from what he did to him. He remembered the people he couldn’t save. His brothers who died. Nate took the hand and willed away the thoughts and memories. They weren’t allowed anymore, or at least right now. “Okay. Let’s find our farmhouse.” He moved to the door, opening it up and stepping back out into the world.

Alex waited and smiled when Nate took his hand. He squeezed it gently as he followed Nate out of the room and into the hall. "I think.. we should just keep moving. If we go straight and avoid towns, we can make it through to Wyoming in a day or so." Alex said as he moved back towards the street, looking at Nate every so often as he walked.

He thought about that. Not having to go through any more of these towns was an interesting thought. That was less times they could almost die. Less times they could get lost in the cruel world. He didn’t even really understand where they were heading. He just had to trust in Alex. He had to trust that Alex was his guide. And he did. He trusted him. Nate nodded. “Okay. We keep walking. Make it to Wyoming and then wherever Jackson is in that big state.”

Alex looked at Nate as he waited for his partner's input and he smiled at that. He was thankful that Nate trusted him, and hoped that Jackson would be the new start they wanted it to be. "Sounds good to me. I'm ready to find somewhere safe." Alex said as he led them towards the forest. "I think I'm done with traveling for a while." Alex added as the entered the forest.

“Me too,” Nate nearly whispered as they made it to the forest. Back to the trees. The trees felt like it was where they began this journey even if it was technically in the middle of a town that he was horribly lost in. “Alex? Do you think they’re together? Everyone who died.” It was not something he thought about a lot. “Kaleb and Carlos. My mama and my brothers. Maybe even my mama and my daddy. Do you think they get to be together?”

As they walked through the forest, he felt like they were back to how they were not that long ago when they first started the journey. Alex looked at Nate when he started talking and thought for a moment. "I think so. I like to think that they are, and that perhaps Kaleb and Carlos have found their lost loves as well. They're all looking over us together I'm sure." Alex said as they moved.

That made him feel a little bit better. He didn’t want everything to just be awful. Just be ruined. He hoped that somehow, wherever you go when you die, they could all be together. Then at least you aren’t alone. Nate looked at Alex, and for a moment he thought about saying that. Then he looked ahead and let it go. For a while they were quiet. “Okay, distract me while we’re moving. Tell me something amazing.”

Alex looked around the forest as he thought for a moment just what happens when you do die. He hoped that what he said was true, because he missed his brothers a lot. He missed Carlos' boisterous energy and Kaleb's laidback confidence. What he wouldn't do to see them again, and he wished they had cameras that worked, so he'd have a picture of them all together. But Alex had their faces in his memory and he was going to draw them altogether and hang it in their farmhouse. He was pulled from his thoughts as he looked at Nate. "Um. Okay. You know those wolves I mentioned? Well, both of them fell for one of my own people."

With the kind of mood he was afraid of falling into, he needed anything else to keep him from going there. Anything else. Absolutely anything. He thrust all of his attention on Alex and hoped that he could give him that. Well he certainly did do something that was jarring enough to distract him. That was what he asked for. “What? That’s crazy!” He could maybe see some wolves who did not agree with the horrible way of treating Alex and his people. He could understand looking at their war and thinking maybe that this was not something that mattered as much. But when he thought about it, he thought about himself and Kaleb. He thought about how much he could look past for Kaleb. But he was not in love with Kaleb. Kaleb was his big brother that he would miss so much. “What are you? Some kind of star crossed lover matchmaker? And if they’re all sitting around falling in love with people, how come no one fell in love with you?” He smiled, because he was happy to keep Alex to himself.

Alex chuckled as he heard Nate’s words and shook his head a little. “No I’m not a star crossed lovers match maker. And as for me? I wasn’t looking for anyone. Though I’m sure there were a few that had a crush on me, but I was waiting for you without realizing it.” Alex admitted as he smiled over at Nate. “Trust me, the first time Kai and Ezekiel met was uh interesting to say the least. I wasn’t there but I heard about it after.” Alex said as they walked, he was determined to make it to Idaho before they rested for the night.

Nate shook his head but was thoroughly amused by the way this story changed. “Okay. So you meet up with two wolves who don’t instantly try to kill you. I thank the world for them. Then they fall in love with two of your people. Naturally. If any of them are like you, I guess I can see how that might convert someone from being a horrible murderer into maybe not being so bad.” He smiled at Alex like he used to a long time ago. Almost. It wasn’t quite like he was. Maybe one day he could do that again. “It’s a good thing you didn’t meet any other ones since you were all pairing off. I would be very upset if I didn’t get to have you.”

Alex looked at Nate and nodded as he laughed. "Yes. That sounds about right. Though it took almost three years for Kai and Ezekiel to get together, where Theo didn't take as long." Alex said as he smiled, hearing Nate. "What can I say? Some of us are pretty irresistible." Alex said with a chuckled, then he heard his last words and blushed a little. "I'm glad too, because I really don't want to be anyone else's." He said as the trees started to lessen. "If I remember the map right, we should be crossing into Idaho soon." Alex commented as they walked.

Nate shrugged at the mention of the map. He would have no idea where they were even if the map had a nice circle, an arrow, and the words ‘You are here!’ on them. The directions never seemed to translate in his brain. He had no internal compass. That was what his mama used to tell him. “Well, obviously. Everyone we’ve met has absolutely adored you. Understandably.” He was sure that meant that the moment they met more people, he was going to have to share again. Nate was okay with this, because he understood that in the end, Alex was still his. “Idaho. Now, I don’t have good direction sense, but I do know that’s closer to our destination.”

Alex looked at Nate as he heard him and chuckled softly. "I never noticed that. Clearly I'm oblivious to how adorable I am. Because having Carlos all over me and you in love me with, and I'm sure Kaleb liked me a little too was never a hint." He said with a grin on his face. He looked out over the field and nodded. "We should make it to Jackson tomorrow. This field is where Idaho starts." Alex said as he looked through the field, it was empty and the grass came up to his knees. On the other side of the field the forest continued.

This conversation was becoming sillier by the moment, and Nate was living for it. He needed to. “Now hold your horses right there, mister. Who said that I was in love with you?” He cocked his head in a similar fashion to how Carlos might have. “Just because you know that now we’re in Idaho like some master of the lands does not mean that I’m in love with you. I mean, aside from the part where I may or may not fancy you and then tell you as much.” He slid his hand to his side to touch the tall grass. “Idaho. Well, alright then. We are just chugging along to some unknown place we heard about in passing with the hopes that it’s not full of people who want us dead.”

Alex chuckled softly as he listened to Nate. “I said you were in love with me. But if not, I guess I’ll let you carry on to Jackson and I’ll go somewhere with someone who’ll fall for my charm.” Alex said, trying to keep the smile off his face. To prove his rather silly point, he dropped Nate’s hand and turned to walk away, taking a few steps before looking back at him. “Have fun in Wyoming. Just keep going straight and you’ll get there eventually.”

Nate did not giggle. In fact, he very much specifically and decidedly was not giggling at all. Nope. This was him. Not giggling. “You mean walk straight like this?” He shifted so that he was walking at a slight angle to the right. “I am sure I won’t get lost like this at all!” He swung his arms, and as he did so, he let the momentum, that he over exaggerated a lot, change his course some more. “Hello, Wyoming, I am coming to find you."

Alex looked at Nate for a moment, watched him shift himself so he was angled to the right a little then he changed course more with his overly swinging arms. “Yeah.. straight like that. Just watch out for the hidden cliff that way.” Alex said as he took a few steps further away, flicking his gaze back behind him to look at Nate with a smirk as he held back the laughter that bubbled inside him.

Nate decidedly did not react to that either. He just kept walking in whatever random direction his body turned next. “Great, I love hidden cliffs as it happens. They are my favorites. Can’t stand for those apparent and obvious cliffs.” He began to march purely for entertainment purposes. He wanted to look back at Alex, but that would be giving in so he did not.

“Oh good. Because hidden cliffs are everywhere that way.” Alex said as he watched Nate walk in the wrong direction. He noticed that the other wasn’t looking at him and he smirked. Alex turned around and slowly, quietly snuck up behind Nate. A grin on his face as he leapt, aiming to tackle Nate to the ground with a laugh. He missed this playfulness, this joking banter and teasing grins. “I’m not letting you up until you admit you love me.” Alex said playfully.

“Everywhere! Great, I will never be bored again as I continuously fall.” He could only imagine falling off one cliff to walk some more and fall off another. And since they were hidden, his fake self never saw them coming. He was marching along when suddenly, something was on him and pushing him down. He squealed as he was tackled to the ground. He wriggled underneath Alex and groaned. “I never said that I didn’t,” he grinned.

Alex had shaken his head hearing that but he was grinning. When he tackled Nate to the ground, he heard him and snorted a laugh. “But you didn’t say you did either.” He retorted, shifting so all his weight wasn’t on Nate. He rolled his body just right so he could try and flip Nate onto his back but then he’d move his body over him again so he’d remained pinned down. “So do you love me or not?” He asked with a teasing smile.

“Well no, I-“ Then he squealed again as Alex flipped him over. There was no time to react to what was happening, because Alex was on top of him again, pinning him to the ground. They were surrounded by tall grass, and it was tickling his arms. “If you recall, you said that I was in love with you not that I love you, so your question, though a point of intrigue, does not necessarily pertain to the original question that I posed which was questioning who said that I was in love with you.” Because if he couldn’t science babble a little, was there any fun to be had?

Alex was not a brainiac by any means but he was smart enough to try and understand where Nate was going with his words. Well. Kind of. Maybe. He was getting confused a little. “Okay.. so my original question may have been a little off.. so okay. Then I uh retract my question and let me answer yours. I said I was in love with you, but are you in love with me? That’s the real question.” Alex said, looking down at Nate with a grin.

His mama learned very quickly to use her words to her advantage. She also learned to use others’ too. How else were they going to get away with sneaking into places like they did? So when Alex got a little flustered, that was exactly what Nate wanted to happen. The intent was to attempt to regain control of this unwinnable situation. It was a nice bonus that Alex was absolutely adorable when he had to find a new way around the conversation. After all of that, he decided to simply say, “Maybe.” He very poorly concealed a laugh.
