"oh believe me... She's only pissed off with me. It'll go eventually but I don't blame you for staying out of it." she replied to John. She understood why he wanted to stay out of it and she didn't blame him. If roles were reversed she'd be acting the same way as he was. She also felt like it wouldn't be fair to drag him into this situation. Kay knew Fee was only looking out for her deep down and yeah, she probably shouldn't have told Fee to fuck off, so it was her own fault really.

With a sigh, she put her hand down by her side. "Just need a distraction for a while" she told him, "So...let's talk about anything but her for a while." She put emphasis on the word her to imply Fee. She walked back to the table and chairs and sat on the table next to him. She too had been wondering about them both. She had been ever since Chas gave her that look when she said that stupid saying to John. "I know it's hardly the time...but there's the whole 'us' thing to talk about" she continued.

John's first reaction to her words was naturally "somebody please smite me into another dimension, I really don't want to have to do this right now...or anytime really." It was just his default thought, but the logical part of him said that it would have to be done at some point or another, he might as well suck it up, get it over with, and stop procrastinating. That didn't reassure him in any way.

"I don't think any time is ever a good time.....but it needs to be done." He chose his words, treading carefully. This was going to be awkward, and not just for him. But maybe it was a good idea to figure out exactly what it was they had, to clear up what seemed to be a massive, all consuming grey area.

She nodded, he was right. There wouldn't ever be a good time but it did need to be openly spoken about. "You're right.. there won't ever be a good time...but we gotta talk about it John. It's like, I know where I stand but I don't at the same time. And no doubt you're in a similar thought process." She began talking, a sigh leaving her lips after as she thought about her next words.

"Bond aside? I feel what we have is real...but of course, I don't fully know if you think the same thing. But here's blatantly something between us that must be real? I mean..going by...well.. you know" she smirked slightly.

Kay's thoughts were indeed echoing his own. Which was a good thing he hoped, it meant they were roughly in the same boat. Like him, Kay was choosing her words carefully, that much was obvious to him. Her words made sense too.

He gathered his thoughts before speaking. "Yeah....sometimes I think I have it figured out, but most times, I have no fucking clue. But it feels more real than anything I've had before"

Kay nodded, she understood where he was coming from. She wasn't exactly an expert at this kind of thing herself. Hearing him say it feels real to him aswell though, did reassure her mind a lot. "You're not the only one John...I don't know a lot of things that tie up to us, but I know we're legit...I just know it. I want us to be something John. To be official and not just skirting round outside wondering...so we both know where we stand with each other." She explained as best she could.

She then sighed a small exhale. She didn't want to freak him out or make him feel like doing a runner to another part of the ship but she had to get it off her chest. She stared at her hands that had interlocked together between her knees, from sitting with her legs shoulder width apart. "I try and not think about what we've discovered so far...with the whole..letters from mom etc. I want us to decide on us first...I want to be stuck with you, no matter whether it's forced upon us or not..." She added. She was still picking her words as carefully as she could whilst trying to get her point across.

"I fucking love you you asshole" she thought to herself before she could stop her mind from thinking it.

Thankfully John was not telepathic, and so didn't hear the last part. If he was, he would have pretended not to be. It was beyond strange for him to hear that somebody who wasn't family or friend for most of his life wanted to be stuck with him. He had honestly no idea what she saw in him. Sure the broody arsehole shebang was appealing to both genders, but they left quickly once they realised just how deep it went. But Kay had seen glimpses of just how fucked up his life was, how deep and numerous the scars were, yet she stayed. It was a mystery to him.

"I'd forgotten about the whole letters thing, guess that shows how much I've been trying to not think about it. But some kind of decision.... label...whatever you want to call it, needs to be reached."

Hearing John say he had forgotten about the letters had surprised Kay. Yet when she thought about it, it was no wonder really. He had to think about Elliott, so of course the letters and what was inside of them had slipped his mind.

"It shows you've had other things on your mind as well..I'm not gonna take that personally or anything, I would have forgotten as well. I get it needs to be reached...and we can work on it...I want you to be okay with being stuck with me too though..I don't want this to be one sided ya know? I know you feel something for me, I just..." She started saying sighing, "I don't know really...I need you in my life John" she admitted, putting her head in her hands.

"I can't explain it...I just know you're meant to be in my life"

Of course he sounded like a right arsehole for saying he had forgotten about the letters. It probably hurt to hear him say that, but he was glad Kay seemed to understand. And need for confirmation? Confirmation to prove that yes, whatever this was, was indeed happening? John understood that. He tended not to show his full emotional spectrum at any given moment. A self preservation method. Or a coping mechanism of some sort. But he was going to try.

"I don't mind, being stuck with you, I really don't. You're one of the best people in my life at the moment, and I have a feeling that you'rerant to be in it that you should always have been in it. But I'm shit at showing it"

She really hoped she wasn't scaring the crap out of him with everything she was saying and when he replied, it made her lift her head from her hands, running them to the back of her head. She was glad to hear what he was saying, she just never truly realised that's exactly how he felt about her.

As he finished, it brought a small smile to her face. "If you were so good at showing how you feel, there wouldn't be such an appeal John... Call me crazy coz damn, I feel like I am half the time... But that's why I'm drawn to you in some ways. You're this fricking mystery that has layers and I love learning more as each layer peels back. Keeps me on my toes so to speak." She replied to him. She looked at him and smiled, "I'm glad we're on the same page on this. I truly am... Because I want to be your girl, even if we don't show it all the time to the others..." She said.

"The others have already made their decision on what we are, even we are unable to." But he wasn't expecting Kay to give a reason (beside the bond) for why she felt drawn to him. He was appealing because he was like an onion? A bloody onion?! Of all the possible reasons to like him he wasn't expecting that. Well....maybe he was. But it brought a smile to his face, reminding him of something. "that reminds me of something, I might have it on me"

He searched through the various pockets in the inside of his coat, before locating the right one and pulling out a folded piece of paper. It was folded into an origami shape. He unfolded it and passed it over. It contained a caricature drawing of an onion in trenchcoat, shirt and tie flapping in the wind. It had an expression that somehow perfectly captured John's expression. Written underneath in slightly wobbly, uncertain handwriting was 'John Constantine, human onion." The skill in the drawing was in direct contrast with the uncertain handwriting.

"I kinda picked up on that vibe, what with Jay implying we're always at it like rabbits and the look Chas gave me earlier at the mall." She smirked. She was curious at what she said could have reminded him of something, so she watched as he rummaged and handed her the piece of paper that he unfolded. She took it and looked at it, laughing instantly. Now she understood completely why he would have been reminded of this from what she said. "Hey.. if you're an onion then so am I. You've managed to peel back several of my layers of self protection lately." She told him, handing the paper back to him.

"So...yeah, I guess I can't say much more than I have, but if you're willing to have me as yours, then I'm happy with that too. I've been drawn to you way before our bond and such. And you said it yourself...we were always meant to be in each others' lives." She told him fondly.

John smiled at Kay's reaction to the drawing. It was one of the most accurate depictions of him ever created, if Chas was to be believed. Which he usually was when it came to basically anything that John asked him about. His smile continued when Kay compared herself to an onion. Bond or no bond, they both seemed extremly good at dragging out each others thoughts and forcing them to talk about things they'd usually have kept to themselves. "Looks like we're both in agreement then"

John took back the page, and looked at it again, smiling fondly at the memories associated with it. He didn't fold it back just yet, partially because he wasn't exactly sure if he remembered the right sequence of folds. "In case you were wondering, Elliott drew this back when he was all but non-verbal."

"looks like we are" she replied to him smiling. They really were so alike, that sometimes it probably would have been seen as weird or uncanny. Yet it was neither to her, it was perfectly normal. She belonged to John and that made her content, she finally found where she was meant to be and didn't have to run anymore and she was thankful John all but gave her that confirmation in those simple words he spoke.

She watched him look back at the drawing, "I did wonder if it was Elliott's doing yeah." She said warmly. "It seemed like his doing and sense of humour" she added.

"It's classic Elliott. The drawing and the handwriting and the everything else in general has come on dramatically since then." He really did care about the guy, even if he often called him some variation of idiot. But Elliott knew it was meant in a loving way. John found him really missing him at that moment, as he carefully refolded the drawing. It took a few attempts to get it right.

"I never did explain how I ended up adopting him, did I?" he questioned, the realisation only hitting him right that instant. Sure Kay knew parts of the story, but considering they were flying across the universe to rescue him, she deserved to know the full story, if she wanted to.

Kay listened to him. She could tell how much he cared for Elliott. Though, she didn't need this piece of paper and moment to tell her that. She knew from all these months she had spent with him and Elliott. It was obvious in the little things he did or said, aside from the various takes of 'idiot' he'd call Ell. She watched as he refolded the paper after a few attempts to get it correct.

"Not the full story no. I figured you'd tell me when you were ready to which is why I never pressed for it." She replied, "but I'm willing to hear it now if you want to tell me?" She told him. She had always been curious as to the full story, but as she said, she never pressed him for it knowing it wasn't the way to go with him. She knew he'd open up to her in his own time about the things on his mind. Just like he never pressed her if she wasn't ready to talk about her thoughts. It's how they worked.

"You figured right, and it's not entirely my story to tell either, so I had to respect that." Elliott had given his permission for John to tell Kay in the USB message. John briefly touched the USB key as he placed the drawing back into the safety of the inside pocket. " But he's okay with it, and I'm okay with it, so sit back, it's kind of a long story." He swing his legs off the table and leaned forwards in the chair as he began to speak, wrapping his hands around one knee before starting to tell the story.

"I guess the best way to explain it is to go right back to Elliott's childhood. His birth planet was a place called Attil, his race a people called the Devra. It just so happened that his race evolved along similar lines to humans in terms of physical appearance. The main difference physically is the golden eyes and the cheekbones, they all have those ridiculously high ones. But his race have one crucial difference to humans. They get abilities...powers...whatever you want to call them. Most have two abilities, a primary and a secondary. Some are hereditary, some are luck of the draw."

"Elliott was the second born child, his sister, Cal being the first born. She's a pyrokinetic as her primary ability, but beyond that, Elliott doesn't know. She's four years older than him. His mother worked as a research scientist, his father is one of the high up leader people. The abilities manifest at various speeds depending on the person. Both Elliott and Cal were early bloomers. As a civilaistaion the Devra are technologically superior and superior in terms of space travel to humans. But the one thing they cannot tolerate is magic. They are incredibly magic racist. They can't control it or understand it through science so they fear it. At around seven Elliott started to show the first signs of being a mage"
John took a deep breath in anticipation of what he was going to say next.

Kay pulled her legs up and crossed them as she sat on the table in front of him. She didn't interrupt him.once, just listened but she was happy Elliott was happy for her to know the full story. It felt like Elliott trusted her enough to know and that was a big deal to her. They truly had come so far.

Some of this she remembered him telling her earlier, mostly so she knew where they were heading and she certainly remembered the magic racist bit. It made her keep a mental note to keep her guard up because she just was pure magic in so many ways. It made her wonder at the time if they'd sense it in her like Elliott did way back when.

She kept listening to John, and she noted the deep breath he took for the next part he was about to say. "Take your time..it's okay" she reassured him.

He nodded slowly, then continued to speak. "Naturally this was a massive problem. His father was climbing higher and higher in the government. His policies were based on mostly anti-magic sentiments. So to have his son exposed as a mage would be a scandal. So Cal kept it secret, teaching him how to conceal his magic, through trial, error and hard graft. She had no magic herself, so how she figured it out is unknown. But of course they were found out, and his father did what any parent in that situation should never do.......he made it worse."

"He, with government backing tried to first suppress his abilities and then, when that failed, to eradicate them completly. But it didn't work either. Elliott nearly died in the process, but became stronger than ever before. The bigwigs began to fear the abilities of Elliott, who was still only a child at the time. So they made a plan."

"They publically exposed him as a mage, in such a way that he was forced to use his magic skills in full public view. Then came the fear mongering and the rumours, all of it absaloute crap. And when it reached fever pitch, they bloody exiled him. The made a fucking show out of it too. He was told that if he came back he would be killed on sight. He was just over twelve years old" His voice broke slightly saying that last part.

Kay let him talk at the pace he wanted, listening to every single word intently so it'd all sink in. Hearing how his kind were, she could completely sympathise with why John hated them so much. His sister sounded like an amazing girl from what was known about her. She wondered if Sam would have been that kind of sister if she knew about Kay's abilities and truth.

Hearing how they treated Elliott at such a young age made her sick to her stomach. He was just a kid, an innocent kid still learning about himself, just like any other kid of any race would have been doing at that age. Her empathy and sympathy showed in her eyes, she was sure of it. She instantly felt more protective of Elliott and felt the need to save him even more. "Bloody Hell...." She whispered, her tone breathy.

John just nodded sadly in agreement before continuing. "His sister, now sixteen and fairly proficient with her own skills, tried to stop it, she failed. She was the only one to have the balls to do so. Elliott tried to fight back, and in the process a sword blade caught him across the face" He traced the line of Elliott's scar across his own face, an unnecessary gesture, yet somehow vital to the telling of the story. "So he's placed in a ship with some basic supplies and shoved out into the depths of space."

"Fast forwards nine(ish) months. I'm in a shithole London warehouse, it's a regular Friday evening, beating the living shit out of some demons, Chas by my side, as always. The roof suddenly collapses inwards and when the dust and stuff clears, it's some kind of capsule. Naturally we go investigate, and get blasted off our feet by this surge of magical energy. The source? A terrified boy, with a scarred face, hair half burnt off, clothes smoking and tattered from the crash and an absaloute mess of tangled hair, who is yelling at us in a language neither of us recognise, a shield manifested between his hands."

Kay kept listening. Her heart just broke for Elliott the more the story unfolded. She couldn't imagine what it just have been like for him to go through all that. She thought back to the visions she shared with him when she helped them both through Elliott's nightmare. Elliott's scar now made even more sense to her.

She could also tell it was hard for John to tell the story, she could hear how his voice cracked in places. How he still felt so sad for Elliott. Hearing the time skipped bit didn't seem any less sad to her. "The poor kid...." She just simply quietly replied. "I'm guessing you managed to calm him down enough to take him in?" She asked.

"Yes and no" was John's response. He paused before elaborating. "We tried to calm him down, but the language barrier was a hindrance, for all he knew, we could have been trying to kill him. In an effort to get away, he completely burnt out and collapsed. We took him back to mine, and patched him up as best we could, still having no idea who or what he was. Then I found a universal translator spell thingy and cast that as he slept, hoping it would work."

"He woke up, screaming, terrified out of his mind from the nightmares. But the translation thing worked, so I managed to calm him down. It took two weeks before he actually stabilised and shortly after that started to talk to us. From there, we taught him English, how to properly control his magic, the main things you need to know about Earth. Somewhere along the way he grew on me, so I adopted him. We phased out the translator spell, at first he was non-verbal, only communicated through drawing and sign, but he got the hang of it. Elliott was fifteen when he started to tell his story. The rest is history."

Kay gave a single nod when he said yes and no. She let him elaborate and she kept listening. It wasn't a surprise that Elliott was terrified to the point he'd burnt himself out. She could only imagine that any kid would be like that. Hell, she knew if she found out about Fee at a much younger age, she would have reacted to it in a very different matter... Not to say that she wasn't terrified when she first saw her wings appear or when she woke up in a different location to where she last remembered for the first time. It was nowhere near what Elliott went through but what she did experience, helped her understand what she was told a lot easier.

When he finished, she sighed as she took it all in, and it was A LOT to take in. "You did good by him John. You know that right? You brought up an amazing kid" she told him truthfully.

Her words came as a serious relief to John. He was always finding himself constantly having to remind himself that he had raised Elliott right and to be a better person than he was. It was one of the few things in life he needed reassurance on. Being a parent in general was tough. But being a parent to a traumatised alien kid who lost basically everything, while at the same time you yourself are just barely a fully functioning human was a million times harder.

"Yeah... I know, but I have to keep reminding myself of that. But he is pretty damn awesome by any standards. Parenting is bloody hard, and I probably shouldn't have let him get a tattoo at sixteen or ride a motorbike underage, but luckily it didn't backfire on me" He was remembering those times fondly.

She smiled warmly, of course he needed reassurance on that, and she knew she'd give that to him whenever he needed to hear it. "I'll always gladly help in reminding you of it" she replied to him. She could tell he was remembering those little things fondly, and she knew those were the things he had to keep remembering.

"Okay, so those little things aren't ideal but hey- no one's perfect. He still became a great kid and that's credit to you. You're a great dad" she told him. She truly meant those words with all her heart. She'd spent so much time watching the two of them interact with each other to know what she said was truth. It was at that moment that the tune she had been humming earlier came back to her mind, but she didn't hum it out loud.

"Mum! Dad!" next came an echo in her mind. It was faint, and clearly fighting to get passed the tune in her mind, but it was definitely there, loud enough to hear the words said and wondering what it meant. Without realising she found herself pulling out her necklace from under her top to skip the pendant between her fingers.
