Theo plopped himself down by Josh. “I don’t know what you mean. We have never been late and shan’t ever start, because that would be silly and we are always very serious.” Hayden laughed and smiled at his son. “Hey Kai. Thanks for bringing us food.” He leaned just a little so that their shoulders nudged one another. It was likely to be one of those meals where he forgot to pay attention to anyone else around.

Josh shook his head and chuckled at Theo. “Uh-huh. Yes of course. Very serious and grown up you are. Always on time and never causing any trouble. We’ll see how that goes when we’re patrolling together soon.” Josh said with a grin on his face. He was actually a very strict patrol leader, and that came from years of being in charge of a group of officers. Kaiden felt their shoulders nudge one another and he smiled at his dad. “You’re welcome. I see you two came alone. Did you try to get uncle Soren and uncle Jay to join us?” Kai asked curiously.​

Well that wasn’t intimidating at all. Theo did what he was told for the most part. He tried to be a good soldier boy. A good listener. If he was ever late or wasn’t following the rules, it was not usually because he was blatantly disregarding them. It was mostly him being bad at being still. Though Kai was a different kind of person altogether, he had a similar struggle. They tended to get in trouble when they were together for this reason. “May I just say that I appreciate that we are not being punished as severely as one may have thought?” Hayden grinned at Theo and nodded. “You may. Though do not feel as though you are being rewarded for your behavior. We are simply acknowledging that you require a different kind of attention.” He turned to Kai. “Your papa convinced me that there wasn’t a point in even trying with them today. He is probably right.” He leaned over and stage whispered, “don’t tell him I said that.” Then he pointed to Theo. “Don’t just keep staring at me. Eat your dinner. I know what you’re waiting to hear. It will come. After food. Besides, I have a feeling your partner in crime may have already told you.”

Josh looked at Theo, hearing him and he chuckled, shaking his head a little bit. He glanced at Hayden when he heard that stage whisper, it wasn’t very quiet. But, Josh let his husband have that, without saying a word. He simply snorted a laugh and started eating. Kaiden nodded, laughing. “Yeah, it probably wouldn’t go well.” He said with a smile as he started eating, looking at Theo as well. He had told Theo what their punishment was but he didn’t tell all of it, so he’d let his dad really tell him. The idea of patrolling with Theo sounded wonderful and even though it was to keep an eye on them both easier, it would also make leaving notes easier for their friends. Er acquaintances? Kai was still unsure of what they really were.​

Hayden and Theo began to eat their food. After a while, Hayden chose to be the one to speak again. “Alright, so what did you do while you were out there?” He always did want to hear about everything Kai did. Other than the part where he worried too much, he was also Kai’s biggest fan and supporter, so he also was the first to want to know every amazing thing that he did. “Other than slipping on some rocks and hurting yourself.” Theo was briefly confused by this and then remembered that this was how Kai explained away the injury.

Kaiden looked up at his dad when he heard him asking what they did. Oh. Well. Here is where he needed to omit some.. truths and insert some harmless white lies. “Well, we checked out the flooded part of the city, and no we didn’t see any scars.” Liar. Kaiden shook himself from that thought and carried on. “Then the next day we went to check out the ocean and the cruise ship. And that night was when I slipped and fell on rocks.” Kai explained as he ate, looking at Hayden as he ate. Josh simply ate quietly, listening curiously.​

Theo made a mental note to swap the days in the timeline for when he inevitably was talking to people. This was going to be fine. Hayden ate and nodded. “You are lucky, you know that?” These were dangerous places, and he was not going to start on how dangerous it was. He was going to focus on the positive parts. “Cruise ship. Find anything fun out there?” Theo groaned. “Just about a thousand infected.” Wait, that was a bad thing to say. That look Kai’s dad was giving him was less than ideal. “We didn’t stay there! We explored very carefully and scouted the area, and when we saw there were a bunch, we responsibly left.” That look was not going away. “I swear. Right Kai? We didn’t want to die or anything.”

Kai looked at Hayden and nodded. “Papa taught us well.” He said, trying to reassure his dad that they knew it was dangerous. He was about to say they didn't find much, when Theo mentioned all the infected that were on the ship. He whipped his head to his brother and sighed heavily. Did he really want to get them stuck in the stadium for longer? He saw the look on Hayden's face and sighed again. "Dad. We saw how many there were and left the moment we did. We decided not to fight because it was one we wouldn't win. We know how to survive and take care of ourselves and we work well together." Kai said as Josh placed a hand on Hayden's shoulder. "Hey, remember what we talked about. They're grown up and they were trained very well."​

Hayden breathed. They were highly capable adults who could look at a cruise ship full of infected and make the choice to leave. He gently smiled at them. “So you abandoned your quest to search the cruise ship. Good.” It really was impressive that they went so many places and came back with only one injury. It could have been a worse one as well. “No daring adventures there. You went to the flooded parts of the city before that? What about there? Have any exciting things happen?” He hoped that did not include infected.

Josh heard him breathe and sighed softly, looking from Hayden to the other two. Kai thought for a moment, trying to think about the flooded part of the city. "We searched a couple buildings and jumped the floating pieces of road. That's about it." Kai said, not wanting to mention the stalkers and runners they took out. If Hayden had given the look when they'd mentioned the infected on the cruise ship. Josh narrowed his eyes though, he sensed that Kai wasn't telling the truth that there weren't any infected. Jacob used to live where the flooded part of the city was now, and it had been full of infected back then, and once it flooded, they didn't patrol there.​

Hayden was not certain that he believed that. He felt that if they were out trying to find themselves for two days, they should have had more things happen. Hopping some road and searching some buildings did not sound like enough. But, Hayden had not been out there in a long, long time. “Nothing else at all?” Theo shook his head. “Nope. We are not trouble magnets like you seem to think that we are.” He smiled at the word. They weren’t, because obviously Kai was. Not that he was going to tell them that. Hayden definitely did not believe that smile. “That sounds like it was not even worth all that effort then.” Theo laughed and shook his head. “It definitely was. It’s not about the adventure. It’s about… the like… I dunno, the uh… principle?” Hayden cocked his head. “Uh huh. Josh, I think I was wrong, and we are officially old."

Kai looked between his dad and Theo, and while his dad was right, more did happen. He was not about to tell him that really they'd run into two scars.. again. They saved one and Kai got into a fight, twice verbally and once physically, with the older one. Nope. He heard that comment about not being trouble and had to force himself not to laugh. He totally was a trouble magnet apparently. "It was all about the point of why we left." Kai agreed with a nod. Josh looked at Hayden and chuckled, shaking his head. "No, we aren't old. We didn't do super exciting things when we were their age either."​

Theo looked at Kai hoping that this was going to work. He didn’t want to lie to them, but he knew why they had to lie. Besides, it wasn’t really lying. The point was to prove that they were adults and could be responsible enough to take care of themselves. The point wasn’t to find trouble in the form of the enemy. The enemy who were definitely less enemy like now. Sort of. Sometimes? Hayden conceded to that. “We most certainly did not. The most exciting thing I ever did was swim with the sharks. The ones that were trained for that. It was probably one of the best experiences, but it wasn’t as exciting as it could have been with the wild ones.”

Kaiden looked at Theo and then over at Hayden, hearing him. "Wait.. Dad.. you went swimming with sharks?" Kai asked, he didn't remember his dad ever telling him that before. And that was so cool. Josh chuckled, looking at his husband then to his son. "The most exciting thing I ever did back then was ride the Ferris wheel." Josh admitted. "And it was also the scariest thing I'd ever done." Josh added as Kai looked at them both, curiosity and wonder on his face.​

Hayden looked at Kai and smiled. Had he not ever told him about that before? He put a hand on Josh’s arm and grinned. “And you did wonderfully, honey. I will always be proud of you for that.” Then he nodded to answer Kaiden’s question. “I did. When I was much younger, my parents took me to swim with sharks. It was at a facility that had specially trained animals who were okay with humans, so there was no danger. It was magical. Them being all around you like that.” He could still see them as they circled. “I wish I could have done that when I was older though. And I wish that I could have done this with the wild sharks. They have such different swimming patterns.”

Kaiden was honestly a little surprised because it wasn't something he'd thought that his dad had done. Josh merely smiled at Hayden when he heard that, before listening to the two of them. He remembered hearing about that from Hayden and knowing how happy he'd been that he'd done it. It was about that time when he realized how much his best friend at the time and partner now had loved sharks. Kaiden listened, and he could only imagine what that would've been like to do and he had to admit it was something he would've loved to do. "That sounds so cool." Kai said as he finished his food. "I wish I could've done something like that."​

Hayden ate his last bite and nodded. “I’ve also swum with dolphins and sea lions. I believe we did one with a beluga whale once. And I have come right up close and personal with a fair share of stingrays.” Now he was showing off for his son. It was true. He loved to sound like he was the cool dad. He spent so much of his life trying to be what Kaiden would want him to be, so when he got to sound like he had done something amazing, he stayed on it for a while. “I think that you would have absolutely loved doing that. If only those kinds of places still existed.” Theo was too busy being shocked to say anything other than, “Wow.”

Kaiden's eyes widened as he heard that, surprise on his face as he heard that. "Wow." He said, wishing life was that exciting for them now. That they could do something like that. "That's so cool." Kaiden added as he listened to his dad, and nodded. "I wish we could do that now." Kai agreed as he thought about how cool it would be to swim with whales, and dolphins, and sharks. It was a dream that he knew he'd never get to experience but he could hear all about it from Hayden. "What was it like to swim with dolphins?" He asked, intrigued. Josh merely saw the excitement on his son's face and it made him smile.​

Hayden smiled like it was nothing despite knowing that he was definitely cool for having done something like that. It was a relatively common thing. As long as people had the money and ability to get places, they could do all sorts of things like that. The experiences were not even that much in the grand scheme of things. They did seem impossible now, though. “Swimming with dolphins is like being in the water with the most energetic people you have ever known. They love to talk. They love to show off. They come right up to you and rub their snout on your cheek to show their affection. I wish that we could have done things like that with you.” He smiled at Theo as well. “You would have gotten along with them so well.”​

Kaiden listened to his dad, his eyes still wide as he listened to him. His head tipped to one side as he heard about what it was like swimming with dolphins. Kaiden did laugh when he thought about swimming with dolphins, they seemed like energetic kids almost to him. "I wish that we could still do that." Kaiden agreed, looking at his dad and smiled. Josh wished they could too, but he was going to take his family to the aquarium once Kaiden's grounding was over, he was determined to convince Hayden that it was a good idea.​

Hayden could remember the days when he was able to move how it was necessary for all of this activity. He remembered when he could run after Josh, even if he never could be as fast. He longed for those days more than any other days. They were the best of his days. He never thought it would be his leg that he took for granted. “Perhaps, after you have sufficiently learned not to cause so much trouble, you can do something like that. You and Theo can find your own not so dangerous adventures?” He could not help but hope for it. He loved his son, and he did not want to lose him to something so reckless.​

Kaiden listened to his dad, his eyes still wide as he did. Then he blushed at the words from his dad and chuckled. "Perhaps we could, but I doubt it. The ocean seems very... turbulent so often. And there are no places cool enough that aren't dangerous." Kaiden said with a small chuckle, and that made Josh laugh softly. "Who knows what the future holds." Josh said as he looked at his husband. "But for the next month you're grounded anyway so you'll have plenty of time to think about things to do that aren't dangerous." Josh said with a small grin on his face.​

In another life, Hayden would have suggested that they travel to somewhere a lot less rocky than the Seattle area. There were plenty of places that they could go. He had not gotten to travel too much before the world changed. He did get to go some places. Those were a faraway dream now. Theo sighed at the reminder. “So… um, how grounded are we?” He knew what Kai had told him, and he also knew that there was no way he was getting out of this without his own lecture. Hayden turned his attention back to them. “Extremely. When you decide to endanger not only yourselves but also others who risk their lives to find you and then you continue to make choices that you know will negatively impact others, then you get to be grounded.” He paused to let that sink in. “You are lucky that it is only a month. To be honest, you may think that my punishment would be harsh, but think about if your commanding officers were not your own family. Think about if you were a mere grunt in the cog of an army far larger than this.” He leaned in closer to both of them. “Perhaps in your time away from duties, you can do some research. See what they used to do to people who were absent without leave.” He moved back and patted the table to show that he was done. If they got him started, he would probably fall pretty deep in. Was it meant to scare them? Possibly. There was nothing wrong with a little healthy fear on top of the rest.​

Kaiden listened to Theo ask about their grounding and he lowered his gaze to the table as he listened to his dad. They did that, all of it. And on purpose. It seemed like a good idea at the time, and maybe it was, but he still knew it was wrong. Kai was thankful that Josh had been able to talk to Hayden and not make their punishment worse. "What did they used to do?" Kai's voice was quiet, hearing that pat to the table. He couldn't help himself, the question poured out of him without him even thinking about it. Josh looked at Hayden then at the two young men. "Why don't you research that. In the library." Josh suggested, looking at him with a level gaze.​

Hayden only smiled instead of answering. Theo thought that between him and Josh, they were far too cryptic, and now he was afraid to know the answer. Was it bad? Was it really bad? Were they lucky that this was not the old world? Seemed like it really. A lot of people thought it was better in the old world, but the more Theo learned about it, he more he wasn’t sure. “Um… is that what we need to do now? Because I’m gonna be real with all of you. I’m not sure I am ready to know.” He looked at Hayden in the hopes that he would slip up. He just smiled. That was creepy. So instead he looked at Kai and breathed out so deeply that he felt like he didn’t have any air left. “So, um, I’m gonna go? Kai? Can we go?”​
