Kaiden looked at Josh for a long moment, and then at Hayden. He didn’t know that. Josh of course, had a blush on his face, listening to his husband talk about the old days. He’d considered being a track star at one time. But he decided against it. “Once Jacob gives the all clear, that sounds good to me.” Josh said, smiling at both of them. Kai was trying to picture still the crowds of people who came just to see people run against each other. It was a strange and interesting thought.​

Hayden nodded, remembering the injury to Kai’s back. Slipped, right? Poor baby. Anyone could slip but for him to aggravate his back again was horrible. “Maybe that will help you when you get antsy too. Races always helped your papa. You know, when he was young, he used to run outside to blow off steam and work through whatever was going on inside that noggin of his?” Hayden didn’t see a whole lot of this, but he’d heard the stories. “Sounds familiar, right?” They were so similar. No wonder they were his favorite people.

Kaiden tilted his head a little bit, hearing that and thought for a moment. He looked at Josh and then back at Hayden again, maybe that was what he needed to do. "I didn't know that. Maybe.. maybe that's what I should do instead of running away." Kai said while Josh nodded. "Any time you want to run kiddo, I'll run with you if you want. It'll be a good way to spend time and stretch these old muscles of mine." Josh offered as Kaiden smiled. "It does sound familiar.. it's kind of crazy how similar we are even though we don't share true genetics." Kaiden added.​

Hayden shook his head at Josh. “No, sir. If those muscles are old on you, then I’m old and I refuse to believe that.” He grinned as he turned back to Kaiden. “It was unfair of me to judge so harshly when I should have understood what you were going through. Feeling trapped. Wanting to move and go. These are not foreign concepts that I have had to deal with. So, you may have some similarities to your birth father, because everyone does, but you have far more in common with your papa than him. Genetics are only part of who you are. It’s everything else too.” He smiled as he leaned against Josh. “I think we should also mention that while you were away, your papa and I had a very long and hard conversation mostly about me and how… difficult I have been. So, starting now, I am going to try my very hardest not to be so anal about literally everything. You are a beautiful young man. Not a boy anymore. And I… am not an old man but I can be stubborn. We’re going to work on that.”

Josh chuckled, looking at Hayden. "Right, of course. I'm not old and neither are you." He said with a grin as he looked over at Hayden. Kai's attention turned to Hayden when he spoke and he listened. He listened and he nodded, and he smiled. Kaiden's eyes widened a little at the next piece of information, it seemed like by his leaving, they worked through a lot of things. "You weren't difficult, and I.. understand why you did what you did. But I appreciate that you're going to try and treat me like a man instead of a boy." Kai said, a warm smile on his face. He knew a fair amount of why his dad was how he was and did what he did because he was there for so much of it. He didn't know at first what his dad went through, but he learned over the years and he was there for him every step.​

This was going so well. It was going better than Hayden expected honestly. He knew that Kai would never admit that Hayden was insufferable, except for when he did in his outrage, but Hayden knew that this was true. Which was why this was necessary. “You are very kind to be so thoughtful of me. I am not sure I deserve that. But…” There was one last thing to catch him up on. “We also talked about us.” He took Josh’s hand and squeezed it. “And how you probably haven’t ever seen us the way we used to be. I think it’s about time we repair everything, right? Also from now on, your papa gets to really be your papa, and if I forget to let him, you boys have to remind me that things are changing for the better now.” He could feel that they were. “It’s important that you have as many positive influences in your life as possible. That means both of your parents.”

Kaiden listened to him and shook his head a little bit. "You do deserve it." He said quietly, and then he tilted his head. Them? They talked about them? Josh smiled at the squeeze to his hand and he looked at Kai as well. Kaiden shook his head, hearing that. "I heard stories from Jacob, but that's it." He replied, having asked his uncle more than once about his parents before the outbreak. Before FEDRA and the WLF. "Of course Dad. We'll both make sure you get reminded." Kaiden said as Josh chuckled, leaning over and kissing Hayden's cheek gently. "I won't let you forget beautiful." He said as Kaiden smiled at them both. They were both positive influences to him.​

Hayden melted into the kiss until he was most definitely using his husband as a support. A comfortable support. “Alright, I think we’ve said enough for now. Maybe too much all at once.” He smiled so truly that he was not even sure what to do with himself. There was no pretending or ignoring everything else that was going on. There was just the three of them, and they were the best family that there ever was. “Okay, little shark. What do you say with go get some dinner? Maybe you can go get Theo and meet us there?” Dinner was one of the most important times of the day. “We’ll see if we can convince Soren and Jacob to join us.” He grinned.

Kaiden looked away at the kiss, making a rather dramatic grossed out face. He even added a little gag for effect because he could. Once they were done, he turned back and smiled, nodding. He heard his nickname and he smiled wider. "Okay!" He said, nodding as he got up from the chair. He hugged his papa first, who hugged him back and then hugged his dad. After a moment he pulled away. "I'll see you soon." He said with a huge smile on his face. Josh had seen his son's dramatics and merely chuckled, before he heard Hayden. "I doubt we'll get them out of their room until at least tomorrow." Josh said.​

Hayden laughed at their son and reciprocated the hug with as much love as he could, which was much. He waved and sighed as they were left alone once more. “I have no doubt.” He shook his head and rested it on Josh’s chest for a moment. “That went so much better than I thought that it would.” He smiled and ran his hand in circles. “You were right, my love. Let’s get ready for dinner?”

Kai smiled as he left, moving down the hall and towards Theo's room. He hoped that his brother was awake and that his roommate was not there. He didn't want to deal with Brian today. Kaiden knocked on Theo's door loudly, which may have been slightly on purpose.

Josh chuckled, feeling the head rest on his chest. "It definitely went very well." He agreed as he kissed the top of Hayden's head and then he smirked when he heard him. "Can I get that in writing? That I was right?" He joked, laughing as he looked at Hayden as he nodded in agreement about getting ready for dinner. ​

The door opened a couple of moments later. Theo yawned as he smiled at him. “Hey, are you breaking some sort of rule? ‘Cause my mom told me that if I don’t stay in this room, then she’s giving full custody to your parents, and that’s a little scary.”

“You certainly cannot,” Hayden grinned as he slowly got up to get ready for their dinner. “I will not have you holding that against me at any point to include when I need it.” He paused and reached up to kiss Josh. It wasn’t a very exciting kiss. He pressed their noses gently together. “But if it makes you feel better, I might think about saying it every so often.”

Kaiden saw the door open and he saw Theo, hearing him yawn. "No I'm not breaking a rule. Dad told me to come get you for dinner." He replied, a small smile on his face. "So don't worry about your mom, she can talk to Dad if she needs to." He added.

Josh sighed dramatically as he heard that, though he saw the grin. "Can't blame a guy for trying huh?" He asked with a smile, standing up and kissing him back when Hayden kissed him. He felt their noses press gently together. "I guess I could settle with hearing that every so often." Josh conceded as he looked at Hayden. "Why don't we just head to dinner? You can try to get Jacob and Soren but I doubt it will work."​

Theo grinned and nodded. “Mm dinner, yeah that is a good reason to leave, isn’t it?” He stretched and then moved out of the room, closing and locking it behind him. He never changed or anything, because he was exhausted. “So, dinner with the family then? All went well?”

Hayden considered this and then conceded. “You aren’t wrong. We probably should just go to dinner. I will tell them that they have to be part of the family another day.” He laughed. “I mostly care about having Kai back. Is that bad of me?” He took Josh’s hand and walked to the door.

Kaiden chuckled, smiling back at Theo and nodded himself. "Yeah, I'd agree that dinner is a good reason to leave." He said, smiling at his brother. "All went.. better than I thought. Though we are both grounded." He said as they headed towards the cafeteria. "And just be prepared to get the whole 'AWOL and left our territory speech' too by the way."

Josh chuckled, hearing that, nodding and knew he probably wouldn't see his brother or best friend for a few. Though if they had it their way, they'd find a way to get food brought to their room so they didn't have to leave to eat. He turned and looked at Hayden as he felt his husband take his hand. "No that's not bad of you. Because he's your little boy and I'm just as thankful he's back too." Josh admitted as he opened the door for Hayden and walked them through it, shutting and locking it behind them so they could head to the cafeteria.​

Theo groaned. “Figured we’d be grounded. Never too old with your dad. We’re going to be like fifty and he’s still going to ground us, I swear.” He bounced down the hall with Kai towards the cafeteria. He was hungry, and hopefully food would mean a better conversation. “I mean… we kinda did do both of those things… You ever question your own great ideas because everyone else makes them feel like they were stupid? Because that’s me right now.”

Hayden walked slower than he would have liked both to give some relief to his leg and also some relief to Kai. Kaiden needed his space too, so this was Hayden trying to give that to him. They would see how long this space would last. “See, even you say he’s a little boy. Is it necessary for him to grow up? Why can’t he stay little forever? I miss when he wanted to be with me all the time.” Hayden laughed. “Those were the days.”

Kaiden shrugged as he looked at Theo. "But he's letting us at least leave the stadium walls. We can walk the fence." Kai said as he sighed, walking beside the bouncing Theo. "And after we're ungrounded, we'll be on the same patrol." Kai said before he focused on what Theo said, nodding. "Yeah. I do question some of my great ideas. Like running away or making the trip to Martyr's Gate." Kaiden said as they got close to the cafeteria.

Josh moved at Hayden's pace, he was fine with going slower. He looked at Hayden and chuckled, shaking his head a little bit. "Because in the end, he is but he's also a grown man. We know better than anyone that we cannot stop father time from moving forward. And I'm sure you do, I still remember the first day you took him for the day. Coming home to find you all on the bed curled up? That was adorable."​

Theo opened the door to the cafeteria for them and held it open as Kai walked through. “So there is kindness in the world. That must be your papa. But hey! Same patrol! That doesn’t even sound like a punishment! Maybe we can stick with Uncle Soren?” That would be the best case scenario. They could get away with more with him. He wasn’t about to run back to Hayden and tell on them. Probably. “And I don’t think it was a bad idea. Though.. I’m sorry about your back.” He headed to the line for food.

Hayden sighed. “You know what I remember about that day? I remember waking up sandwiched between my two very favorite people, and they already met and seemed to get along.” He could not think of anything better than having the two of them close. “I could see this beautiful future where it was the three of us. Even though he wasn’t ours. Not yet. I would imagine running away, just the three of us, back to the old world. It was how I made it through many days.”
