Kaiden heard Jacob and he was glad to hear he could still run, and patrol and do everything he loved. He felt the readjustment and felt his dad’s forehead against his own. “Yeah, it is.” He said with a smile and a nod. Josh pulled away about the same time as Hayden, and he picked up Kai’s pack. Kaiden smiled at the touch to his nose with the finger and the nickname. Josh looked at Hayden as he took his hand and nodded. Kai nodded too. “I agree.” He said, moving off the table. Josh held out an arm for support which Kai took and holding Hayden’s hand with the other smiled. “Well my beautiful family, why don’t we get moving? Jacob, Soren? Take some time to relax.” Josh said as Jacob grinned and walked over to Soren with a smile and a soft sigh. He was ready to relax.​

Soren grinned as he waved at the family that was walking away. A whole beautiful family. “Oh, I’m sure we will.” He wrapped his arms around Jacob’s waist from behind him. “Come on my beautiful hero. That’s enough for today.” Theo moved over to the three. “I just wanna say that I’m glad you’re not hurt too bad. And that everything is good.” He smiled at Hayden and Josh. “And that we aren’t in trouble.” Hayden smiled and raised both brows. “Don’t think that. You are both in trouble still. But you can thank Josh for it not being as bad.” He placed a hand on Theo’s arm. “Go rest. I’m sure we’ll find you later.”

Jacob felt Soren’s arms wrap around his waist from behind him. He hummed softly in agreement. “Yes. Let’s head back to bed.” Jacob said, happy that the two boys were back. Kaiden flicked his gaze over Theo and smiled. “I’m glad it’s not as bad as I thought.” He agreed as Josh shook his head and looked at Theo. “I did my best but you are absolutely still getting some kind of punishment.” He said before he turned back. “Bye Theo.” Kaiden said, as he headed with his parents into the stadium.​

Theo waved as he moved away, ready to face his own parents now that Kai was okay. Soren kissed Jacob’s neck and then pulled him and back towards their room. Hayden laughed as he heard that. “Your papa convinced me to maybe find a… a compromise.” He leaned in like he was telling Kai a secret. “He really can be very persuasive if I were to ever actually listen to him.”

Kaiden listened to his dad and laughed, hearing the snort of amusement from Josh. “Oh is that so? So when did you actually start listening to him? Did my leaving make you have to listen to Papa?” Kaiden said with a chuckle as Josh let out a soft huff. “I’ll have you know I’m very persuasive. And sometimes, I know what I’m talking about.” He added with a wink towards Hayden. Kai shook his head as he listened to them. ​

A light chuckle escaped Hayden’s lips as they walked through the stadium. “No, your leaving caused me to stop listening. You know what very little I did listen? Gone.” It was an interesting thing to think about now that he was away from it. Given more time, he might even be able to think about it more analytically and not be so horrendously upset by it. Until then, though, he could say things like that with a little smile and hope that the smile was enough to keep all of them going. “And I… made some mistakes. Ones that meant I had to start listening.” He squeezed Josh’s hand. “But we can talk about that later. Or not. I’m sure you had an adventure yourself out there.”

Kaiden was both concerned and curious. He knew how his dad was, he grew up with him. And his leaving caused this not listening? It was definitely intriguing. And he wondered what kind of mistakes his dad made. Then he flushed and looked away as the next comment. “We had some kind of adventure alright.” He admitted, thinking about the flooded part of the city. Thinking of Alex and Ezekiel, hoping that Alex made it back okay. Josh noticed Kai went quiet and frowned, tilting his head a little. He heard Hayden and squeezed his hand back. Kai sighed, as they drew closer to his room. He was ready to lay down on his bed.​

They made their way to Kai’s room where Hayden stopped at the door, trying not to be too pushy and too much. He didn’t even want Kai to be in there, so far away from him. He wanted to be close. Keep them all together. That was a good thing in FEDRA. Having a general for a husband meant that he got more things. Things like a second bed for when Kai was theirs because he was running from his arguing parents. He wished they had that again. But that time was past, and Hayden had to accept that things were different. The world changed around him. “Sleep well, okay? Whenever you’re ready, you know where to find us.” He wrapped his arms around Kai in a hug that spoke to how much he absolutely missed his son while he was gone.

Kaiden saw his door up ahead and for the first time since they made it to the stadium, Kai didn’t want to be away from his dad. But he couldn’t say that. Couldn’t ask more of him than he had. So like the grown up he was, he hugged his father back, feeling the emotions in it. “Of course dad.” He said, his voice shaking slightly. Kaiden pulled away, hugged his papa just as tight and turned towards his door, pack in hand. “I love you guys. So much.” Kai said softly, head held high as he turned into the room.​

“Kai!” Hayden was having such a hard time with the idea of walking away from him. What if he lost him again? Hayden couldn’t do that. He couldn’t lose his son. He reached for his hand and squeezed it. “I am ready to listen. To anything.” He really hoped that Kai understood that he wanted to be a good dad. He wanted to be the father that his birth father could never be. He wanted to be able to listen. He wanted to be better. He was so afraid that with realizing how things had been, he had not been a good father.

Kaiden felt a tear slip down his cheek at the idea of being alone. He didn’t understand it either. He paused his motions, wiped at his face and turned back to face his fathers. Listen to anything? There is so much that Kai wanted to talk about, but the biggest thing he wanted to talk about, he couldn’t. “Thank you. That means a lot to me Dad.” Kai said, his gaze flicking to his empty room and then to Hayden. “I… should probably go rest..” His voice was soft, and faltered a little bit too. Stop that Kaiden. You are a grown man, act like it. He chastised himself as he turned once more to head into his room.​

A young man. A capable soldier. An adventurer and an explorer. That was who Kaiden had grown up to be, and Hayden loved that about him. He was just so proud. So unbelievably proud. But at the same time, he could see that little boy. He could see the baby who needed a hug to chase away the hard times. The child who wanted someone with him during his nap. It was so hard for him to turn away from that. He looked at Josh, and he was reminded that he promised to do better. To compromise. So he smiled as Kai turned away, and he waited for the door to close, and then his body melted, hand over his mouth as he tried not to cry. He turned away and headed towards their room.

Kaiden smiled, turned and headed inside, the door clicking shut behind him. He leaned back against the door for a moment, breathed and then moved to his bed. Laying on the soft mattress and pulling his blanket over him. The relaxer was doing its job and soon Kaiden was asleep. Josh watched quietly and once the door shut, he watched Hayden put his hand over his mouth. Josh turned and walked with him, heading towards their room. “Good job love.” He said softly, sincerely and knowing how hard it was for Hayden to turn away from Kai, especially after the last few days.​

Hayden held onto Josh’s hand as tight as he could, maybe too tight, as they walked. Was that a good job? He didn’t feel like it was. He felt like in turning away, he was doing exactly what was the worst for them all. Wasn’t the whole point that they were trying to be a family again? Weren’t they trying to be better? How was abandoning him all alone when he was clearly in need the best thing to do? It was so hard for Hayden to turn away from how he had thought for years. As they made it to their room, he was shaking his head. “Every fiber of my being makes me want to turn around, but I know I shouldn’t. I know that’s just me. I know…” he caught his breath. “I don’t know how to do this, Josh.”

Josh felt the too tight grip on his hand. And as they made it to their room, he saw Hayden shaking his head. “I know it’s hard. But he needs to sleep right now. He will come see us when he’s ready. I.. did not see him growing up like you did and I will regret that for life. But what you’re doing now, is exactly what he needs.” Josh said, kissing the top of his head as they walked into their room. “You are a wonderful dad. Kaiden admires and adores you. And I know that he’ll see you once he gets sleep.”​

Needs to sleep. Come when he’s ready. Regret. Hayden looked into Josh’s eyes, searching desperately for something that he could not name. Exactly. Wonderful. Adore. Hayden couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t breathe. He had to breathe. He threw his arms around Josh, and he tried to remember what it was like to be a good dad. But that was before he knew that everything he was doing was smothering Kaiden. His heard pounded as his nerves and everything else ceased to work correctly. Suddenly the pain in his legs, both aching with everything that had happened the last few days, was practically unbearable. “I need… I need you to do this with me.” Now that there was hope that they were going to do this together, really do it unlike before when he never accepted that, he didn’t want to go back to doing it alone.

Josh watched Hayden for a moment, paid close enough attention. And felt the arms thrown around him. He wrapped his arms around his love and pressed his face to the top of his head. He kissed it, hearing his words. "Of course beautiful. I'm here for you, I'm here for him. I want to do this with you." Josh replied, hope filling his body that perhaps he can finally, truly be a parent, truly be a father to Kaiden like he'd wanted to be for so long. "I'll be right here beside you, the whole time."​

Hayden believed him. He believed Josh meant every one of those words. He meant them before. Hayden felt that too. Before when things were rough, Hayden knew that Josh meant every one of those promises. He knew that Josh wanted to be married even when things kept happening and it was pushed back. He knew that Josh wanted to be around more often even when he seemed to find reasons not to be there. He meant them in the moment. But these words were different. These were not just promises. These were facts. “I don’t know how I did this without you. That is my biggest regret.”

Josh would live with his regrets for the rest of his life. He regretted putting his job in FEDRA first. He regretted postponing their wedding several times. And he regretted not helping with Kaiden through the years. “I wish you hadn’t had to do this without me. I have a lot of things in life I wish I could take back. My years of being in FEDRA and not being here for you are my two biggest regrets.” Josh admitted as he allowed himself to speak of his past and regrets. “But beautiful I can promise you this. I will be here from here on out. You will never have to do anything on your own again.”​

His hero. After everything. After creating a demon that haunted his mind based solely on Josh, somehow, he was still his hero. Forever. Forever his hero. Hayden tilted his head up and kissed Josh’s cheek. “Good. Because I think I would like to keep you around. Keep you close.” He sighed. “Better than I have. And I know you get restless. I get restless too, but not like you do. So when I forget, I need you to remind me. Okay?”

Josh smiled at the kiss to his cheek. “I’m glad to hear that baby. Because there is no place I’d rather be than here beside you.” Josh admitted as he looked at Hayden. “And of course I’ll remind you. Just like if I ever go quiet, I’ll need you to remind me to talk about my problems and feelings, instead of running away again. I think that’s a pretty great compromise.” Josh said softly, kissing Hayden gently. “Now, I think our son has the right idea. How does a little cuddle and nap sound to you?”​

Hayden nodded and slowly made his way to their bed. “I think he does have it right. Though, he has the help of relaxers. And no, I refuse to take them. Let me suffer. It won’t be quiet suffering, but I need… I need to feel it a little longer. It helps me remember that not all of my pain is someone else’s fault.” Sometimes – all the time – it was his fault too. Shared fault. It could have been sweet if he weren’t so emotionally exhausted. He lowered himself onto the bed and curled into the middle, hand outstretched to find Josh.

Josh followed behind Hayden with a small sigh, agreeing completely. A good nap never hurt anyone honestly. "You know, I understand why you need it, but it doesn't make it any easier to hear or see." Josh said as he moved onto the bed beside Hayden, taking his hand and pulling the rest of him just as close. "Because I've always hated to see you suffering and that has never changed. Even if the source of your suffering had." He added, resting with Hayden in his arms.​

Hayden snuggled close, curled into his husband like he had since they talked. He did this before too, but there were times when it didn’t feel right. Like there was something between them. He was learning that it was him. He was the barrier. Maybe now they could finally break that down. Maybe it did the moment he thought he lost it all. “I promise that if it doesn’t get better in the next day or so, we can try medicine that Jacob prescribes. Three days. You need three days to start a habit. I need three days first.” Maybe. He yawned, eyes heavy as he laid against him.

Josh held Hayden as close as he could and heard him. He kissed the top of his head and sighed softly. "Okay. Three days. But after three days we're revisiting this discussion." Josh said as he rubbed Hayden's back. His eyes were closing slowly and he yawned slightly. "Now, close those beautiful eyes of yours and sleep." Josh said softly as he closed his eyes as well, resting his head on the pillow and in a few moments, he found himself falling asleep, with the most content sigh slipping out as he did.​
