Fantasy Department of Defense Against the Supernatural

"You're face is so cute when you're confused," He teased, "But that's why they called us in." Then he had a thought, then, and said, "Lets's have it dusted for prints, maybe someone cleaned the place up afterwards, bet they were real nice, huh?"

She gave him a look, somewhat amused. "Maybe." She nodded toward one of the nearby people to imply that the order should be carried out. "If she had apartments this nice there must be video feeds. We ought to get ahold of the security footage and see if there's anything at all there."

She rolled her eyes with a smile. "I don't blame him," she said, heading back toward the department offices.

Luke reluctantly walked into the DDAMPSEA building. He was in the Intelligence department

He walked to the reception desk and paused his music, which was blasting "Umm...uh my-my name is Luke Cross, and I'm supposed to start here today, in the Intelligence Department."

The receptionist gave him a hard look, clearly doubting the truthfulness of his words. It wasn't hard to see why. He had bags under his eyes due to the lack of sleep, and clearly wasn't dressed for the job. Plus, he wasn't even an adult yet! What would a kid like him bring to the table? She asked for ID, security questions, and SSN. She kept it in paperwork, because for some reason, his information always disappeared from the computer files. When it all checked out, she lead him to the back. "The investigators are out on a case right now, but they'll be back soon."

Luke sat down in one of the chairs near the head detective's office, and played the waiting game.

Right about then, the pair walked in. Piper headed for her desk, not even sitting down to write notes. She knew Criss had started and intended to bring him some things immediately.

She went straight to his office. "Agent Cross?" She asked, looking in. "I have some things I want you to look into."

Corin and Piper walked in the room. When Piper inquired about research, Luke looked to her and nodded. "Hello Ms. Piper. Research, I can do." Luke was glad she didn't start the pleasantries. He kept from making eye contact as he spoke. "Wh-What is there to look into?"

He got all fidgety and felt her eyes on him as he nervously messed with his phone. He didn't get any sleep that night, but only then did fatigue hit him. He was ready to get to work immediately, as he could stop being so nervous once he locked himself in his work room

"Hey, you forgot the welcome spheal I told you." Corin told his partner, "Ah well, she has some fairy tail for you to look into, meanwhile, I was wondering if you could find any videos around this apartment to show the comings and goings of anyone." He handed Cross a piece of paper with an adress and information on the building on it.

Pier stuck a sticky note to the edge of the computer:

Ghost

Shapeshifter

Witches/Curse

Banshee

Black Dogs

Luke went into his workroom with the sticky note and the paper . It was a small room, and perfect for him. Booting all the electronics on at the same time, he closed his door and got to work.

Looking at the list of creatures, he made his report on the creatures rather easily. Black Dogs were a little tricky though. After cross-referencing 10 websites, and 7 reference books online, he made his report:

Black Dog Report

Black Dogs were apparently a relative of the deadly Hell Hound, and is said to be a hell spawn like Hell Hounds. They hail from English, Latin, Scottish, Irish and general European folklore. They're known to be mostly malevolent, but some are known to be benevolent and some are known to be docile unless provoked. They're associated with death and a few are guardians of the underworld. The most famous one is Cerberus.

Sightings are international but relatively scarce throughout history. In all of them, they're seen as black dogs with big glowing eyes of either red or white. Some of them are seen as headless. Their presence is usually marked by thunderstorms, executions, and ancient magic. They tend to haunt the places they go, not just running around aimlessly, or haunt people who do horrendous deeds like cannibalism

The benevolent black dogs have been known to be protectors to those around them, especially of children. They're in good eyes with the people who they protect. These dogs never attack innocents. They've also been seen as harbingers of good luck.

The docile ones are known to be harbingers of death, and their bark or sightings are heavily linked with death, 100% of which happen within a year.

Like all hell spawn, it's impossible to summon Hell Hounds and Black Dogs, and attempting to do so will attract both Hell Hounds and enraged Black Dogs.

-Luke Cross

Luke turned to the video tape. People just walked in and out like normal. Nothing suspicious happened during the tapes. Whatever he was supposed to be looking for didn't show up. He took the reports back to Piper and Corin. "The tapes showed nothing. Black Dogs yielded something especially interesting though. The other creatures were lame, but I got them too."

Piper looked at him and nodded. "Thank you. I was most interested in that part anyway. Granted, 'Interesting' doesn't always amount to 'closed case.' Sometimes it really is that boring."

"You've got to be kidding me, her lead came up with more potential hits than a real one? Huh, guess you do still have more than a pretty face, Pip. Thanks... Uh, what was your name again? It was, Hmm, Alex Cross? No, he's in some kind book, sorry, too many names in my head." Corin said, Waving his hand dismissively.

Piper threw him a smile. "Thanks again, Luke," she said before turning toward Greyston. "At least it means I'm still the more useful half of the team."

"Luke! That was it, one of my favourite names." He says, "Luke, Luke, Luke." He noded, "Right, got it. Anyway, Piper, we'll see whose more useful in the feild when someone tries to run, the vampire with super speed or the human girl in heels and a pant suit."

"I took a look at the reports on the body. You should look at the body again. It has no physical injuries on it. Since the soul is located in the heart, the attacks are commonly mistaken for heart attacks or natural causes. The victim was the only one going in and out of the house all week. She could've been a recluse. The most suspicious thing is that nothing was out of place, which suggests that, if she were poisoned, she'd have done it herself. If someone gets poisoned by an assassin, at least something would've been out of place as they struggle for air or something, regardless of if they see the assassin. Toxins tend to show up in blood reports."

"With that in mind, all signs point to docile Black Dogs, who take souls to the underworld. They're hell spawn, who don't show up on man-made optic devices, aka cameras, mirrors, binoculars, etc. like vampires to mirrors. If you need to look for something, it's best to look for Magic Residue. It takes magic for Black Dogs to extract souls. Identify the victim and see if she has an affinity for magic, then look for magic residue contrary to hers. Think of it as fingerprinting for magic, but you know all this right? Black Dogs leave a black residue with a reddish hue. If anything else is needed, just call"

Luke went back to his workroom. Waving as he left

"Thanks!" Corin called after Luke, "He's good, I like him" he said to his partner after Luke left. "And right, that is a good spot to start, however, I'm a step ahead this time! Look:" He handed his partner a printed page with the name 'Arianna Heights' at the top, below was a picture of the girl at the scene:<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_04/image.jpg.1846aab5d58b8ecbeb9846f97906b2fc.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="48529" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_04/image.jpg.1846aab5d58b8ecbeb9846f97906b2fc.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

"She's a softball player, a 25 year old human, didn't seem like much of a recluse. EXCEPT during her last few weeks, when she moved into that new apartment after inheriting it from her late grandfather-heart attack."

"I see." Piper frowned. "But she didn't have a heart attack herself. Do we try and follow that lead on the Dogs or do we try and find something else?"

"You follow the dogs, I'll check into cursed objects." He said, nodding and realizing his partners brilliance.

Luke sat in his workroom and checked in on more possible leads. He decided to check into if she had an affinity for magic.

He went onto her Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and found a compelling amount of pictures in each. Typical of females, but a lot of them got him thinking. These weren't the typical selfie. He summoned an RC Battle Coptor and sent it to Piper and Corin's office. It was built in with a mic and cameras for optics.

When it got into the office, Luke spoke through the mic. "This Arianna Heights. Does she have any pets that you know of........ or a history with dogs?"

Corin looked a touch surprised to see the RC Copter instead of an actual person, "Hey there, you're looking good- though your body seems to have gone missing there!" he joked, then he waved the comment away, "Anyway, she had a cat, but got rid of it before she moved into the new place." He flipped open the file he and Piper had been compiling, "But she had dogs when she was little, so I guess she liked them, we haven't finished going through her things, there was a hang up with the local police? I guess, we'll know more about her as a person once the psycho people go over her writing stuff, and we get a chance to see what she felt was important. Gotta love a pretty girl with a diary."

Piper turned to look at the copter. "Why? Anything unusual with dogs?" She asked, glancing at the computer.

"You should look to interview her family. Animal lovers tend to use magic that governs syncing with and even turning into animals. That'll help to search for Magic Residue."

Luke continued. "Also, looking back on what I researched, black dogs don't always come from dogs. There are reports that they sometimes come from the spirits of children, who form into protective Black Dogs, and malicious people, who turn into hostile Black Dogs and Hell Hounds. In other words, not all black dogs come from dogs. If she has maybe abandoned an animal in the past, and the animal died, it may have come back on some Chuckie type revenge as a hostile Black Dog."

"Another interesting thing is that not all black dogs are black. There have been reports in history of them looking no different than normal dogs, except for their large size. It seems to me that while Black Dogs have the best lead, it's the hardest to follow. She said she saw a Large Black Dog, but was it a Black Black Dog? This thing is yielding a lot of questions. Take a look in the diary. It's possible that the words 'Black Dog' is capitalized, since it's a supernatural being. If so, then it was just a black dog with no color. If not, then it's a black black dog. A simple detail like that would throw a monkey wrench in everything"

(by the way, this is all genuinely what I found)

"See Piper, the dog haunting story isn't far-fetched, Luke suggested it too." Corin said, turning to Piper triumphantly, as though that was the only part of Luke's information he actually absorbed. "But right, we'll check out the family and the diary and get back with you, in case you see any links that we miss."

(You have no idea how happy it makes me that you actually looked them up, too! :)

Alex's long fingers waved at the customer as they left, a slightly cheery goodbye included. After the door shut, she found her way back to the book she had originally been reading. Her rather vibrant purple hair fell in front of her glasses, so she pushed it back and sighed.

Piper gracefully ignored her partner, working through all she'd just heard. "But these Black Dogs — that's a lot of info for something that hasn't really been proven. How did you find all this?" She looked at the screen, frowning. She had always been less skeptical of Black Dogs than many, but it wasn't as if people infrequently used them to attract attention. There were some reports, though, that she just couldn't ignore.
