As Ned Stark once said, "The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword. If you would take a man's life, you owe it to him to look into his eyes and hear his final words. And if you cannot bear to do that, then perhaps the man does not deserve to die."

If Roland thinks someone ought to die, I think he'd be more inclined to do it himself for this reason, though I suppose I can imagine situations where he might hire somebody sneaky like Ana or Sebastian or Tannur to perform a quiet assassination that couldn't be traced back to him should the need arise. That definitely wouldn't be his first instinct, though, I don't think.

I'd like to think I was a few years ago; I remember doing a political compass test that everybody in the lecture had to do and the lecturer put all the results on the screen. I was the fella furthest to the right diagonally in terms of economic and authoritarian parameters. I remember hearing a companion saying, "I wonder who that far-right twat is?" and then I told her and she said, "That can't be you Larry, you're too nice!"
