james sat at the table near Trace, seeing the homunculus devouring his food with such haste.

"hey Trace! easy on the food or it'll go down the wrong hole and you'll spend the rest of lunch coughing it up"

James took a forkful of his rice dish with the chicken, ham and mushroom soup, it tasted absolutely delicious, followed soon b a gulp from his glass of cola, which seemed to refill itself the second he put it down.

he looked at the Ordinators, they sure looked scary with those big black masks on with the glowing eyes, but with their faces visible, they were smiling, talking to each-other and some of the other new students, not intimidating at all.

at the staff table, Meranda Kathra looked over "where's Val? she should be here by now..." the giant replied "i dunno, probaby buried in her books again"

The woman left the room, and Minka was forced to follow the rest of the crowd as they piled into their seats and she was lucky enough to end up next to James. Taking a risky glance at the people that took up the rest of the seats around them, she shook slightly as she folded her hands on the lip of the table. Other than the amount of strangers near her, the fact that the floor looked to be missing also made her nervous. When she had first noticed it, her wings beat automatically and even now they twitched every so often.

The teachers sat at the table in the front, while what looked to be the administrative staff (with a few odd exceptions) sat behind them. Minka listened closely as the headmaster began to speak, trying to decipher some human language on the way. As it came to the end of the speech though, she was still glad to be at the school and even happier to be eating. A rather small meal appeared in front of Minka, consisting of a roll, some noodles and a very small portion of a veal cutlet. Water also sat in a tall glass near her and she glanced idly to her left to see what James was eating. It looked odd to her, and that put her off on his meal entirely, settling to start drinking the water first.

Valentina Becke entered the orientation hall leisurely, taking another glance at the kinds as she ascended the steps and took the last seat at the table. The room was now completely full and she noticed that the kids were also well into their meals already. Glancing at her fellow tablemates, she smiled apologetically; having forgotten something in her office, she had rushed out without a second thought. Now her necklace draped around her in its proper place and she could feel the cold metal warm up.

The necklace wasn’t anything ordinary, still carrying the core part of the staff that broke many years ago on the end of it. It seemed to resonate with her well enough, and even had some magical inclination built in it, being able to discern a threat.

Shooting a glance at the teachers next to her, she brought up the un-avoidable,

“Sorry I’m late” she noted.

The headmaster first spoke to Val

"oh its alright, you missed the speech but it was the usual stuff "welcomg, this is a good place to help the world" like last year, come, take your seat, the meal is ust beginning"

--

James looked over to MInke

"Hey miss Angel! waddya think? this place is great, innit?"

as she responded he shoveled some more of his meal into his mouth, but keeping his eyes on her.

“Yeah” Minka noted, not having much to add

Although James alleviated some of the tension she had thought existed by shovelling more food and she ended up laughing. Setting her empty water down, she watched as the cup refilled and blinked, looking down at her plate with a frown. She sure hoped that the plates didn’t do that too…she certainly wasn’t that hungry…

--

The woman nodded at the headmaster, starting into her meal as she had already found her way to her seat. The kids that filled the auditorium were interesting to say the least, and she had some regret that she wouldn’t meet all of them. Her presence wasn’t even that significant in the school, considering she only relayed orders from someone else.

Although, her offensive magic skills were among the best in the school and she considered herself a battle mage.

James smiled as she laughed, looking kinda silly with a grain of rice on his face, not noticing it.

James kept talking "so what class do you think we'll have first? do you think we'll get to choose our classes? i hope we get to do everything first then get to choose later, oh! i wonder what the hours will be, i dont wanna wake up every day at 6 o'clock..." he just kept going, well what do you expect? hes an excited 12 year-old boy after all.

--

after Val took her seat and her food came up from the table, the headmaster spoke

"so Valentina... any word from the REAL headmaster?"

As she had been pulled into the room, a chattering elder student had apparently taken a liking to her and plopped her down in a seat next to her. The shell in the girl's hair told her she was a cousin of sorts. As the headmaster finished speaking, food appeared all across the tables and looking down in front of her, she tilted her head.

A side portion of a seaweed ocean berry salad, a decent sized unknown kind of meat cut, well, unknown to the other students, to Nellie it was perfectly normal, and a weird bright purple vegetable that was round with spikes sticking out of it. On her left hand side, a glass of Italian soda appeared.

The elder student looked at her and winked, clearly, she knew and taking a glance at the other's plate, the meals looked vaguely similar, minus the vegetable and drink choice. "I know, I was surprised they gave it when I first came here, so, what ocean are you from?" The girl giggled.

Nellie blinked a few times, "I live in a great lake, towards the Canadian side." The girl nodded her head understandingly. "Didn't know we had family in lakes."Nellie laughed lightly, before both her and the girl in unison pulled out a piece of seaweed, ripped off a piece of meat, and wrapped it in it. "Everyone does it like that?" Nellie blinked, looking at the girl "Yeah...it's just...a tacit habit I guess." Giggling again, the two continued chatting, the couple across the table clearly a bit surprised by their mannerisms.

"Well, you know how it is, just lookin' to be a butterfly," he replied, laughing again.

"Well hi there little Bast," he went on, reaching out to pat the cat on the head.

Cam laughed, then as food rose from the table she saw that she had the regular school meal as proposed over the announcements, and looking around there were different species all eating different things. She took a bite from her plate, it was simply delishious, even though she never really liked mushrooms in the past. Cam giggled and said, "So what is it that 'catapillers' eat?" Of course she meant him as a slime. Bast mewed complacently as Ili petted her.

"A little of this, a little of that," Ili replied, motioning to the food still digesting inside him.

"What about you?" he asked jokingly, shifting to a festive purple colour.

"Oh, you know, a little of this, a little of that," she laughed, repeating his choice of words, "But I like to make sure my food is isn't moving, though. It would be terribly awkward if they noticed you were trying to eat them," Cam grinned, she gave Bast a portion of the meat on her plate. She took a drink from her goblet and realized it was smooth and creamy chocolate milk, like the kind her mother would make for her. Cam took another long drink with a smug smile on her face then set it down, for it to fill back up, to her surprise. She grinned and mumbled, "Woah, this place is so cool,"

as the meal went on, the children talked to each-other, but eventualy it had to come to a close

the headmaster spoke again

"Alright students, it is truly great to see you've all gotten aquainted, however being an institute of learning, the classes must commence... please open your diaries and proceed to your first classes"

james picked up his diary, like the other juniors, his fits class was BOTANY

As James kept babbling on and on, Minka’s focus was on the grain of rice that had attached itself to his face.** Instead of mentioning to him, she rubbed at her own face in response, answering his questions after some moments of thought.

“Uhm, I think we’re all going to end up in different classes…I don’t think we’ll get to choose, but I’m excited for anything….I’ve only heard of magic and English before” she noted.

Then with his complaint about hoping he did not have to wake up at 6, she simply nodded, still trying to get used to clocks and the timeline. As she dug into the noodles on her plate, she realized that they were indeed plain, her favourite kind. The small amount of food was consumed quickly, but neatly as both her face and plate were clean after she was done.

The headmaster spoke as she was taking anther lengthy drink of water, telling them that classes would indeed be starting today. All the students had to do was open their diaries and proceed to that class; following James’ example, she opened up the book and wasn’t surprised when she found a word she didn’t recognize there.

It was something called Potions…

~~

A rather mandatory meal had appeared in front of Valentina, and she ate rather slowly, glancing up as the headmaster spoke. The group always had a fascination with the person she talked with; it wasn’t always just, did you hear from him? After that someone would ask what he said, and how he said it and if his facial expressions were as they were. She had grown accustomed to the growing curiosity of the man in the shadows of the administration.

It wasn’t like they all hadn’t met him before; he just chose to relay his information through an old friend…

“He hasn’t contacted me yet” She noted, just before the headmaster gave the final speech about classes commencing.

"Diary?" Ili said aloud, opening it up to read 'Defense'

"Defense? Like the sports' position?" he asked, putting it down to look and see if anyone else had gotten the same result.

James left the hallway, quite excited, he kept glancing at his enchanted diary, it was filling itself up with his official schedule, classes mainly.

soon though he realized... he had no idea where the Botany class was to be held!

he spotted an Ordinator about to have a smoke, this one was a female Ogre.

"umm.. excuse me?" he began, the Ogre Ordinator just glanced down at him, letting out a curious "hmm?"

"umm... c-could you please tell me where the botany class is... please?" even thought he ordinators seemed so friendly earlier, he was still intimidated when facing one.

the Ogre spoke, her voice was oddly soft for an Ogre's "sure kid" she leant down to his eye level then she pointed to a large gate, she placed a hand on his hsoulder as she did so.

"okay you see that gate? go through there then take a right, follow the hallway all the way down, dont worry the hallway ends with the greenhouse, and thats where you're class will be, and if you have theory, then there is another classroom through the last door on the right of the hallway just before the greenhouse"

James was suprised at how helpful this Ordinator was.

"t-thank you very much, do you know if i'll need any books?"

"all books are supplied buddy, you're teacher will give you a study book and a book to write in"

"thank you" this time james had more confidence.

he ran off, going through the archway then to the right, going down the halway to the greenhouse.

Following what the other students had done, Nellie had opened her journal. Inside, a course had been filling itself out, and what was listed first was English. She chuckled softly, it had always seemed so weird to her, that humans had to teach a language they were born speaking. Looking at it as more information filled it, she shrugged, tucked it under one arm, and and started to go hunt down the room.

~

From the shadows of the hallway, a pair of green eyes followed James as he ran towards his class, an eerie look in them as they pulled a Cheshire and disappeared completely without a trace or hint of their being a person there.

Minka entered the hallways still staring at the book in her hand, as ink seemed to spill from nowhere onto the page. It created words, and a nice chart that told her where she was off to for the rest of the day. The 013 next to Potions was what confused her most, not seeing a number above the door she had just come out of or the others. Her feet carried her down the hall though, as she kept looking for any sort of number as a tell-tale sign.

She found one at the end of a hallway, and it directed her down it as she noted the arrow read from 010-020. Soon enough the fallen angel had found her class and sat down in the second row by the window, spinning on the higher seat with no back. The tables also seemed a lot larger and sturdier and what looked to be measuring cups…or small glasses lined each of their desks.

Cam picked up her book and opened it to the first page, mostly information about herself stating the book was in fact now hers. She flipped a few pages and a chart appeared on the page, telling her her scheduale. Cam got up from her table, "Come on, Bast," she smiled, "Looks like we have Mechanics class first!" She waved to the slime, "Bye, Ili, it was nice meeting you! Hopefully we'll have a class together sometime!" She grinned then disappeared in the mass of the student populace all heading for their new classes.

She pursed her lips while walking, she was scanning her scheduale. Cam realized she had no idea where she was going, she stopped several times to ask for directions before finally making it to her class. Her eyes lit up in wonder, there were mechanisms all over the room, projects, tools, blueprints, all the contraptions she could think of stuck in book shelves or hanging from the ceiling. She couldn't wait to start. Cam sat down at a work bench and Bast jumped up on the table in front of her. There were several other students in the room already, they all waited for the teacher.

James got to the classroom, he looked back down the hallway... maybe running to class wasn't the best idea...

inside the glass house, there was the teacher, he recognized the teacher, it was the elvish woman from earlier in the orientation, she had clearly taken a shortcut... or she had tunneled there, she had enough dirt on her to suport that theory and the hole in the corner of the classroom suported the theory.

she woman looked around, seeing the young human boy in the doorway

"ah, a native lad... truly remarkable, what you humans have done to your planet... stripped it bare, heated it, poisoned it, burned it all in the process of either gaining luxury or killing each-other... or both"

James looked ashamed of himself, the elf woman put a dirty hand on his now previously clean shoulder

"oh deary... its understandable, you humans found materials that give off such energy, it made you excited, like a poor man finding a mountain of gold, these materials combined with the success of your machines made you consume more and more untill finally... you're planet is poorer for it... many of the elven hate humans for this, but i understand, please, take a seat"

James did so, not looking into his teacher's eyes, he took a seat near the front of the greenhouse, the teacher gave him some tea just as the other students began to arrive.

Eventually finding the room her class was meant to be in, Nellie slipped inside. The teacher was...drastically out there to say the least. As blue hair that had a streak of a bubble gum pink stood out like lightning bolts, and the strange swirling newspaper looking dress swirled about, Nellie blinked a few times.

en-route to her class, Val would soon find her path blocked by a masked man in a hooded robe

"Val... how are the students fitting in?"

the man was a friend, there were acquainted for most of their lives, but recently they had become great friends

"Val, when you next meet the "headmaster" tell him to have the Core Key transferred to the cage beneath "charlie" i'm getting concerned about the recent rise in activity from the Orc clans north of here, i dont think they would dare invade, but there is a chance they will send an agent to steal the key"

having relayed his orders, he looked around

"i see not only do we have my son in this school's walls, but a fallen angel as well... barely a dozen of them in the world and yet,,, one is here... Val, i want you to keep an eye on our angelic friend, the wings of an angel are some of the most valuable and powerful alchemical ingredients in existence... she must be kept under observation, but don't cage her in...?"

after her response he sighed

"i'm sorry Val, all i've been doing is giving orders... how have you been?"

After finding a a seat, she sighed softly, watching other kids filter in. The teacher smiled broadly, showing several missing teeth. "Today, children, we'll be looking over an old piece of work from Ogre Folk Lore." A small pixie girl raised her hand from a front desk right in front of her. "Yes, Miss Nordstien."

"I thought this was meant to be English, what normal creatures speak. Last I heard, Ogre Folk Lore wasn't English." Her chirpy little voice peirced Nellie's ears, causing the nymph to dig her hands into the edge of the desk a little.ir

The Teacher cocked an eyebrow, "Miss Nordstien, I expect more from my students than biased examples like that, I'll have you know your species didn't speak English until the turn of the century, and even one of your most well regarded stories isn't in English but even mundane english classes cover it, so I suggest you don't speak falsly again, or I shall have you write a ten page essay in Slanderdash."

"Slanderdash?" The girl asked.

"Thank you, Miss Nordstien, I expect that essay by Wednesday. Anyone else care to question my methods and to join our lovely over achiever? I thought not, Now, I was saying, we'll be reading a favorite lore of mine on the aspect of howling mountain winds, a very creative piece coming from Ogres if I do say so myself."

After the orientation, Valentina was taking a tour around the school, checking on the classes and directing those that were lost. Although her rather distant look made it so most first years didn’t ask where she was going. Company came though, in the form of a masked figure that appeared beside her and she slightly tightened up before she realized who it was. Always had a habit of sneaking up on her…

“It’s the first day…no complaints yet” she half-smiled, shrugging

And that was all it took for the conversation to change to a somewhat serious demeanor. At his instruction, she nodded and paused at the implications of a spy

“…You don’t think it’s one of the students, do you?” she asked, rather unsure.

At the mention of an angel, Valentina thought back to the orientation and couldn’t seem to remember any, although she hadn’t spotted the man’s son either. She understood that she would have to watch over the girl and would have to find the angel later;

“Should I make her teacher’s aware…or keep this to myself?” she asked, quirking a brow.

He heaved a sigh, like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders and she smiled at his next question,

“I can’t complain…I mean… there’s not a war on my doorstep anymore” she replied,

“…and you, Marco?” she noted.

~~

It turned out the teacher for the weird class was a man, who was…. Minka couldn’t quite identify what kind of creature he was.

“Hello class, my name is Mr. Movila… ” he announced, a distinct accent in his voice.

Black kept hair hung from his head in rather long, dry looking tendrils and his face looked a deathly white in comparison. His incisors poked out of the rest of teeth, and his lips were also a very dark color, although barely noticeable in the dim room. There were no windows in the class for some reason, so the florescent lightly was all they had to go by as he started in on the explanation of the class structure and textbooks.

“It’s the first day…no complaints yet”
He couldnt help but chuckle a bit "yet... being the operative word there"

“…You don’t think it’s one of the students, do you?”
"a student?... no, but whoever it is, they may be posing as a student... be wary of both students who excell above the others and those who don't even seem to try, i've got my people looking elsewhere, but many high profile thefts have happened lately, and the key would be most dangerous in the wrong hands"

“Should I make her teacher’s aware…or keep this to myself?”
he frowned a bit "i wish you could, but some of the staff are under investigation, only you, miss Kathra, her fiance and the groundskeeper are being told, only those i know i can trust"

“I can’t complain…I mean… there’s not a war on my doorstep anymore”
he couldnt help but smile under his mask "for you... even after everything that has happened, the violence still hasen't left me, at least its now reduced to operatives, spies and assassins, not artillery shells like in my youth"

“…and you, Marco?”
he continued to smile and he took off his mask, revealing the old, scarred yet handsome man underneath, and held the mask in his right hand, he was obviously barely a shaddow of what he once was, yet he was happier than before.

"Better than usual, you know its strange, i thought losing my imortality 13 years ago would make my life empty, yet just knowing i could die at any second... i see the whole world differently, i've even found myself just watching a praying mantis like it were the most interesting thing in the world, i guess i've got a lot of catching up to do"

soon they heard footsteps coming, coming fast, clearly a student late for class.

"i had best make my getaway then, take care of yourself Val... and for crying out loud it wouldnt kill you to stop by for some tea or coffee some time!"

he walked into the shaddow in the corner of the room, and in an instant, he was gone.

----------

in the herbology class, the teacher cleared her throat

"welcome class, for your first day we will be doing something rather exciting...."

soon, great vines grew onto the desks and they all grew and bloomed flowers before them

"now these students are "joy vines and they have green petals..... but these ones have purple pet- HIT THE DECK!"

some students got down, but the rest got a faceful of toxins spay forth by the flowers, not killing them, but making them stop moving

steadily, the teacher got back up "its okay everyone, these ones just spit a paralysis poison, i'll fetch the antidote"

the tteacher began rummaging through her cupboard, james lifted his head, seeing the flower following him.

slowly, carefully, he pulled uot his want

"incinerato" he whispered as he pointed the wand at the plant, soon the vine caught fire, and the flower died, luckily like everything else the tables were enchanted to not catch fire or let fire spread off them.

After hearing the teacher go on and on about a tale that was nothing more than saying don't eat the blue people in several different phrasings, Nellie was just about done. Flipping open the journal, she stared at that data that had filled itself out. Her next class was physical education. What is that...?

Almost letting out a startled yell, Nellie shot straight up in her chair as a book dropped down from nowhere directly in front of her. "I suggest you pay attention, Ma'am."

TIMESKIP - 1HOUR

the bell rang, the sweet sound of class ending, in James's class the students had finally recovered from the paralysis poison being shot into their faces. James packed up his stuff as the teacher said apologies to the students as they left the classroom.

out in the hallway he consulted his new diary, it flipped itself to today's date and the words "Phys-ed" began to shine on the paper "alright P.E!"

he began running to the stadium, following the signs to where it was.

the stadium was clearly bigger than a normal school's stadium, at least double the normal size, at the entrance he saw the students of his Phys-ed class gathering, the teacher was recognizable as the man miss Kathra was fussing over earlier, he was wearing a white cotton T-shirt with the school emblem on the right of his chest, blue sports shorts, white socks and sneakers, he had a whistle around his neck and a blue cap on, this image really didn't fit with the cool look he had going at the lunch orientation, he really looked like a normal school P.E instructor.
