The Great Magi's Misadventures

Tayleen looked at Cassandra. "You don't mean....?" She asked. Her eyes widened a little and she looked down.

"Don't tell him I told you, but...," Cassandra leaned into a whispering position, "Finnas was the one who killed his parents."

"Don't get me wrong, he had no intention of killing them. It was all an accident. It happened a couple years ago. Finnas was helping his parents with some errands when a humongous Darkling attacked the city," Cassandra explained, still whispering. "You see, Finnas has access to an extremely powerful spell, a spell known as Magus Forme, where the caster transforms into a being of pure magic. He used it to fight the Darkling, but at a cost. During the fight, some magical energy shot out and struck down his parents. After the fight, Finnas found his parents on the street, dead. Everyone thought it was the Darkling, but Finnas knew otherwise. Still, everyone praised Finnas as a hero. That's how he became famous. Ever since that day, he's refused to train anyone because he didn't want that person to end up like him. He shut himself out a lot, living in a cabin somewhere in a forest."

Tayleen stared at the ground. She sighed and hugged her knees. "As in...an orphan? As in someone who watched her parents die in front of her eyes and couldn't stop the people who took their lifes? Someone who lost all faith in ever feeling love again? I mean, sure, friends can love you. Don't get me wrong, but...it's not the same type of love, " she mumbled. "I blamed myself for the deathes of my parents, when there was nothing I could do about it. I swore to myself that I would never have anything to do with magic, but then I was reminded of what my father made me promise. I don't want anyone else to be hurt by bandits"

"So, you're just the same, huh?" Cassandra smiled, putting her hand on Tayleen's shoulder. "That's why I try to cheer him up, even though he doesn't see me as his fiance anymore. I doubt I am his fiance by now, but at least I'm trying to give him some happiness and love."

Tayleen sighed and set her chin on her knees. "I don't know how you are supposed to really be happy after something like that. I mean, yeah...you can distract yourself, but...I still miss them. I've cried myself to sleep a few times. I have to learn this. No one should have to feel that pain." she said. She looked at her. "Sometimes though, it takes a certain person to cheer up someone else. I guess, just being around them makes you feel a little better? I don't know, when they're away, you miss them and for some reason...you would give up your own life for them. You would do anything just so that you didn't have to leave them. "

"You think you can be that certain person for Finnas for me?" Cassandra asked, putting her hand on Tayleen's in comfort. "Because I think my charm for him is wearing off already."

"It's not something someone really chooses, Cassandra. Sometimes it just happens and you have no clue how to handle it. I can try, but I make no promises." Tayleen replied. She sighed and looked at the ground. "It's not easy and..."

Cassandra patted Tayleen's back. "You'll be fine." She then took an emerald-like stone out of her pocket and gave it to Tayleen. "Here, take this. It's a whisper stone. It allows the holder to communicate with the person that has the twin crystal on the other end. Use it just in case you need to know something about Finnas."

Tayleen looked at her, confused. "Why though? I mean, I can understand. But, why? What do you think I can do for him?"

"Help him show that anyone can be his family, I don't know, you figure it out." Cassandra shrugged her shoulders. "Anyway, I bet you're also wondering about what happened to that cat you saw earlier."

Tayleen looked at her skeptically, still confused. "I don't follow." She sighed and turned to the fountain. She stuck her hand in the water and swirled it. She shrugged and thought to herself for a moment before speaking. "I'm going to guess that was you? I say this because you know about it and he did say your name." She looked to the edge of the square. "Where?"

"Catch on quick, don't ya?" Cassandra said, patting Tayleen on the back.

Finnas entered the square, his hood up with his bag and staff strapped to his back,

"
Well, look who decided to finally show up!"

Tayleen shrugged and pulled her hand out of the fountain. " It's one of the only things I'm good at." She shrugged and looked up.

Finnas looked at the sky, which was already getting pretty dark. Street lights were being lit all around the square. "I guess we're gonna have to stay the night here," Finnas said, looking around, putting his hands in his pockets.

Tayleen looked at him and nodded. " I suppose so." she said. She sighed and stood. She looked around and then at the ground for a moment. She looked at him thoughtfully and tilted her head, curious. "So, where to?"

"You two can stay at my place if you want," Cassandra suggested.

"Don't think we have any other choice," Finnas said, sighing and shrugging his shoulders.

"No problem. It should be okay with my folks. We have a lot of guest space." Cassandra said, walking towards her home. Finnas followed her, hands in his pockets as he walked.

~The Next Day~

Finnas stretched as he awoke from the bed in one of the guest rooms in Cassandra's house, right next door to Tayleen's room. Finnas looked to the chair next to the bed, seeing that Cassandra was sleeping in it. Finnas got up from the bed and placed the blanket on her, who mumbled in her sleep, "Please don't leave me...".

Finnas grasped Cassandra's hand a little before whispering, "Things aren't what they were back then." He then exited the room, grabbing his things as he did so. Cassandra's parents were out on a trip, so she had to hold down the fort that was her home. It was a bigger than Finnas' little house in the forest, but not exactly as tidy. Books and such littered the edges of the floor since her family did own the shop and all.
