“I don’t believe that at all. I am certain I told you yesterday.” Hayden laughed as he moved into the living room and sat on the couch, immediately falling into Josh’s side. “And the day before that.” He rested his head on Josh’s chest. He held one of Josh’s hands, pulling it to his chin and tucking it under. “Unless of course what I actually said was that you are awfully sweet for being so good to me.”

“Toppled fire escape stairs?” Wait, did he know this story? “Why are we toppling fire escapes?” Theo could answer that. “Hm? Oh, ‘cause we thought running down the old stairs to make it to the floor before they fell was a good idea.” Nate just blinked at him. “It was a terrible idea. Exhilarating and exciting but a genuinely terrible idea.” He shrugged. “Actually, it was a great idea. That was how we met this cutie and his big brother. Or I guess how we met them? Since they already met? Eh, that’s not the point.” So Nate did know this story. He didn’t know the stairs detail. Okay, he was following. “Wait, okay, last week? With Hayden?” Because he really wanted to know. Theo smiled and looked off in the direction that Hayden and Josh had been. They were surely gone, but he just wanted to make sure. “It really wasn’t that bad. He just got a little upset when Kai and Ezekiel were late to dinner.”

Josh chuckled as he heard Hayden laugh and shook his head. "See, wording matters beautiful." Josh said, feeling Hayden fall into his side, and the head on his chest. He wrapped one arm around his shoulders and smiled as he felt Hayden hold one his hands, pulling it to his chin and tucking it under. He let out a soft sigh, missing this kind of connection with his husband. "This is nice." Josh whispered, kissing the top of Hayden's head gently.

Alex listened to Theo, Elijah listening too. He'd heard the story and Alex was there to witness it. Alex shook his head as he laughed, hearing Theo. "Yeah. I have to agree it was a good idea, I don't know if we'd ever met if you hadn't." Alex admitted and then he watched as Theo looked off and then back at them. "Upset? The last time I heard of Hayden getting upset, he either sent the entire base after you or tried to keep you from ever leaving.. So how was this better?" Alex asked cautiously.​

“Mmhmm.” It was more than nice. It was everything that Hayden loved most about their relationship. It was not exactly everything that he missed from before. That was hard with how little he could do. No. No, it was something different. It was sitting on the couch, cuddled after a long day of both of them working and studying for the upcoming college courses. It was watching a movie and falling asleep in each other’s arms. Ordering pizza because they didn’t have time to make dinner. He missed that so often. Here, in Jackson, they almost had that. Maybe not the movie night in their home and the pizza delivery. It was close enough. Almost perfect. “This was a good idea. Coming here. I’m so glad everyone convinced me.”

Theo smiled nervously, pushing a hand behind his neck as he looked at Elijah. “Well, he doesn’t have the entire WLF at his beck and call anymore, so that’s a plus for us, right?” This was not answering the question and only made Nate more curious. Theo sighed. “Okay, so it was a relapse. That’s what we’re calling it so that it doesn’t sound like this is him always. I think that’s for his benefit. Anyway, so he was already in pain from pushing himself before that, and I’m pretty sure he wasn’t taking the pain medicine, because he was super stressed about something, I don’t know what you’d have to ask him, and then when Kai and Ezekiel were late to dinner, he may or may not have blown up. Right there. In the middle of everyone. Talking about how they couldn’t do that to him and everyone else because they would all worry and everyone needed to know everything all the time. And then he got in Ezekiel’s face and was talking about him being a bad influence and not taking care of his little boy.” Theo cringed as he spoke. “It was a mess, but he apologized later that night, and I know he feels really bad about it. That was the first time he’s done that in a while. So yeah, that was him being good about his helicopter parenting of his 26 year old son.”

Josh heard Hayden and smiled softly, thinking about how long it had taken to convince him, but now that they were here, it was so much better. "I agree, this was a very good idea. It's much less stressful than Seattle." Josh admitted as he looked at Hayden with a warm smile. "And I'm glad you did come along, I would've been very upset to be here without you." He said with a soft laugh.

Eli looked at Theo and nodded, before he listened to him explain the story. He remembered Ezekiel's face when Hayden had gotten in his face. It had been a very.. tense moment over the entire table honestly. "Yes, not having the entire WLF is a blessing." Eli admitted as Alex's eyes widened, hearing the story about Hayden's relapse. He hadn't met Hayden until now, since he did not go with Kaiden and Ezekiel when they did leave, he'd stayed behind. It wasn't until the next year that he had left himself.​

Stressful was an understatement. Seattle was their home until it became a chore. More than that. It was such a hard place to be. When they left, he thought that any place they went would be the same. He was wrong. Hayden turned his attention up to Josh and raised one eyebrow. “Oh? Is that so? Would you have left me, Joshua?” There were no right answers to that question, and if he had asked years ago, it would have been a trap. Not now though. He was very much aware of the lack of good answers.

Theo was shaking his head at the memory. “And you guys have met Ezekiel. Well, you haven’t really met him, sorry, Nate. Anyway, he handled it very well for someone who had been dealing with Kai always in his face. To be honest, he’s not even the big scary scar that we thought he was when he would look at Kai with those angry eyes and serious eyebrows and those big muscles and that big hammer meant for bashing heads in.” He was getting off topic. Pull it back in, Theo. “This was gentle and worried Ezekiel who stood there biting his lip and trying not to say anything. Until he snapped, and boy does he snap when he snaps. Then we’ve got Hayden snapped and Ezekiel snapped and it’s all over poor Kai who does not deserve that.” He threw up his hands. “Isn’t love beautiful?”

Josh had been considering leaving Seattle a few months before they did, when Kai was still in his depressive state. The supposed loss of Theo had taken a toll on his son and he had thought about leaving Seattle and all those memories behind. Then a few months later, Theo came back and they were all moving to Jackson. "Me? I thought about it.. once. When Kai ran away three years ago. Because in that moment, I was at my end. But now? No. I'd never leave you." Josh said honestly. He was never going to lie to Hayden, never going to say what he'd think his husband wanted to hear ever again.

Alex remembered Ezekiel back when they first met Kaiden, and he was shocked to hear that he had a gentle and worried side, though hearing that he snapped wasn't exactly surprising. Eli and Alex nodded. "Well that sounds like a wonderful display of love. Aggressive, beautiful, overprotective love." Alex said with a chuckle as he nodded his head. "So.. now that we know about the relapse, what else are you two up to?" Alex asked curiously.​

No matter the answer, Hayden had no room to judge. He already did leave Josh many years ago. They were unhappy. They were not healthy. They were not working. He could not do that anymore. He could not live the lie that was their life. Lives. They weren’t living one life anymore and hadn’t for years. He listened and already knew. “When you almost walked out that door? In that tiny little room where you and Jacob and Soren kept me locked away. I thought you might leave them when you were up and at the door. I thought I might lose you for the last time. I really did in that moment.” He held Josh’s hand like he still might go if he couldn’t keep him there. “I wouldn’t have blamed you. Well, I would have then. But really. I wouldn’t blame you now if you had run off with him then.”

Nate was also curious. He was intrigued by all these stories, but he could hear more later. Theo shrugged. “We’re on a walk. Our daily walk. It’s the best solution we’ve found for daily dealing with the excess energy. I’ve been told that in the old world, there was more you could do with this. Like medicines or whatever, but we don’t have those so walks are the answer.” He spun around like he was showing off the walk and then turned back to them. “What about you guys?”

Josh let out a sigh and nodded. “Yes. I was so close to leaving. But I’m glad I didn’t. I’m glad we talked through everything. It was hard, and it was terrifying but in the end, I’m glad. Because we’re so much stronger now.” He said, squeezing Hayden’s hand. “And I want you to know, speaking of blame, when you left the apartment all those years ago? I was upset, hurt and I.. I blamed you. But not anymore. I realized that we weren’t a pair anymore. We were.. separate. But I let go of that blame three years ago, when I learned about everything.”

Alex laughed, listening to Theo. “So you’ve never lost that energy. Good to know. As for us? We’re just walking too, around town. Taking time to learn it before dinner.” Alex said as he looked at Nate then to Eli and Theo. Elijah smiled warmly. “Perhaps you’d like to join us? If that’s okay with you love.” Eli asked, looking at Theo.​

There was enough blame to go around. That was what Hayden remembered most about all those times. “I know.” How could Josh not? Hayden was distant. Angry. More than a little high strung. And then he was gone. He left and took every bit of his family that he could. How could Josh not blame Hayden for ruining everything? “I wish I told you sooner.” Everything. Everything that hurt them both. If it hurt one of them, it hurt them both. “I wish I had tried harder. To understand you and everything you were going through too.”

Theo hooked his arms through Eli’s and Alex’s and leaned over to see Nate so that he knew he was included. “You know, Eli is the smartest of all of us. I think this is a splendid idea.” Nate nodded. “I’m down. I’m highly entertained. So, do you have a usual route or do you wander until you don’t anymore?”

Josh knew their life was hectic when the world changed, when things went so far down into a spiral. He had hidden his emotions, his thoughts and fears the moment he realized what it had done do his husband. "I should never have bottled things up either. I should've talked to you from the beginning but I was blinded. I was trying so hard to do the right thing for you, that I didn't realize how far apart we'd grown. But the past shaped us to who we are today, and I'm thankful for the second chance for us."

Alex smiled as he felt Theo hook his arm with his and he squeezed the hand that held Nate's. Eli blushed at the compliment and smiled at his partner. "Well, we usually just kind of wander until dinner. Sometimes we stop and talk to people, but usually we just walk. It's nice. Though sometimes we have company, with our large family it tends to vary from Kai to Cameron, and even Jordan joined us once, though he was quiet."​

Hayden waited until the end of Josh’s words, then he placed a finger on his lips. “We have blamed you too much. You don’t get to say anything against yourself anymore. I won’t have it.” He smiled, because that was one of those changes. There were so many changes. So many that Hayden used to worry that they would no longer work the way they used to. They were perfect for each other all those many years ago. They had the perfect life. The perfect relationship. The perfect family. But neither of them were those two in that perfect couple. Sweethearts. He was so afraid that even though they finally figured it all out, that they tried to make things better, that it wouldn’t work. He had never been so happy to be wrong.

Ah, that must have been when Jordan and Asher were struggling. “I don’t think you have to worry about quiet Jordan anymore,” Nate mentioned as they walked. He missed a lot of what went down, but he could figure out a bunch of it. “The solution was obviously to find their soulmates. I never knew that you could be a quartet of adorable. Turns out you can be.” Theo walked with a whole lot more pep than anyone else. “That is good to know. Who else has walked with us? I never could convince Asher. Emmett is always waiting for Cam when we bring him like the gentleman that he is.” He looked at Eli and smiled. “Yeah, it’s mostly us waking around. Trying not to be distracted. Even though I am. Always.”

He felt the finger placed on his lips and he looked at Hayden with a smile. "Okay. I won't say anything more against myself." He said, smiling as he looked at Hayden, before he shifted closer. "So beautiful, why don't you close those gorgeous eyes of yours and relax. I'll make sure we're awake for dinner. I can only imagine what Kai would do if you were late." Josh said with a soft snort of laughter. He knew their son would be concerned because Hayden was never late for meals.

As they walked, Alex and Elijah listened to Nate and Alex chuckled softly. "Those four are certainly a beautiful set of four." Elijah agreed, more than happy to see Jordan and Asher more like they were when they first came to Jackson. Eli looked at Theo and chuckled, hearing him. "Yeah, you get distracted so often, I stopped counting, but that's okay because I still love you and I'm here to keep you on track." Eli said, leaning over and kissing Theo's cheek. Alex smiled, he remembered when he thought that they'd lost Kaiden and Theo, and he was so glad that Theo had survived and even found Elijah, giving the teacher and mentor a chance at love.​

Hayden felt himself doing as he was told. Eyes closing, body resting as he fell back into place against Josh’s chest. “It would be a fun change of roles, wouldn’t it?” he asked as his breathing slowed. With the leg and the stress of being him, it took so much effort. He got so tired so fast. He used to hate that. Yet, here he was, starting to fall asleep again. “Promise you’ll be here when I wake up?”

Theo all but melted under the touch of Eli’s lips. “Aleeeexxx,” he groaned as they lazily moved through the town. “Please tell me that yours is just as sweet as this one. Always keeping me on track. Balances out the energy.” Nate peered around Alex and shrugged. “I dunno. I like to think that maybe it’s the other way around. He keeps me grounded. I’ve been told I’m an optimist, and that apparently is a bad thing.” He smiled at Alex.

Josh smiled as he held Hayden close to himself. “Yes my love. It certainly would be a fun change of roles.” He agreed, kissing the top of Hayden’s head. He heard Hayden’s question and hummed softly. “Yes baby. I’ll be here when you wake up. I promise.” Josh said as he laid his head back against the couch, his own eyes closing slowly.

Alex rolled his eyes as he heard Theo’s groan. “He’s sweet like yours but I wouldn’t say he grounds me. And being an optimist is only a bad thing in certain circumstances.” Alex said, looking at Nate and squeezing his hand. Elijah laughed softly and shook his head. “Someone has to keep up with him and it’s certainly not an easy task sometimes.” Eli said as he grinned over at Theo.​

The promise soothed his mind. No, Josh did. Josh had always been so good at that, even when things were hard between them. Hayden could still sometimes remember the days when everything was difficult and strained between them that there were still many days and nights that for a moment, when he was in Josh’s arms, it was okay again. He hummed contented before he fell asleep.

“I accept that,” Nate stated. It really did not bother him, because everyone had a different relationship. It was so fascinating to see everyone working in different ways. He wished that he could see more of them honestly. “You know what I think?” Theo asked. “I think Ezekiel could use a little grounding. Sure, he’s got Kai and they’re doing way better since they decided all that passion was love and not hate – we all are thankful for that realization. But he always needed you to remind who he was.” Theo shrugged. “Not that he’s doing bad. He just… could probably use that too.”

Alex chuckled softly, hearing Nate and then looked over at Theo, curiosity in his eyes. That sounded about right, he also wanted to spend some time with his brother, he hadn't seen him in months and he missed hanging out with him. "I'm going to make it a point to spend some time with him then. Where does he usually work or what does he usually do?" Alex asked Theo, while Elijah simply nodded. He'd seen their relationship as brothers grow over the last three years and there was simply the best thing he'd ever seen.​

This was the part that he was excited to announce. “That man with all that muscle and his giant hammer decided to go into woodworking and the occasional blacksmithing.” Theo threw up both hands. “When we left, he vowed never to be that warrior again. It never was for him. He questioned far too many things for that. But he was and will always be the warrior that he was taught to be for so many years. So now he uses those skill to make furniture.” He chuckled. “I’d say we should stop by and see him, but to be honest, I bet he’s with Kai. They’re kind of always together when we aren’t out on patrol.”

Alex's eyes widened, hearing that announcement and then he felt a smile grow on his face. "That suits him. And I'm not surprised he made that vow honestly, he had started questioning things and I was glad he left. Our group wasn't working for him." Alex admitted and then he laughed softly. "And I'm glad they finally decided that they did love each other instead, so perhaps I'll talk to him over dinner." Alex said as they walked, he was so glad his brother had found a place where he could be himself.​

Nate slid around so that he was standing next to Elijah as Alex and Theo reminisced over things he did not quite understand but was intrigued to hear. “I assume this is what I am in for now? Getting bits and pieces of their lives from before? Is it like that with you too? Or were you more present?” He was simply curious more than anything else. Theo nodded at Alex. “I bet he would love that. I know he didn’t say much at dinner yesterday, but he is so often overwhelmed with the large numbers of people. I bet that he would try to eat at a different time if Kai and Hayden weren’t so close.”

Alex looked at Theo, smiling as he heard that. He’d really wanted to spend more time with his brother yesterday but he was caught up in the excitement and wanting to see their farmhouse. He would see him tonight, and see about spending time catching up. It was probably the hardest thing that Alex had dealt with when they left Seattle before he had. But he couldn’t leave Lev and Yara, not when his friend needed him. “That sounds about right. We had similar meal time styles on the island I’m sure you remember, and he always chose the less crowded times with the rest of our group. He has never been one for large amounts of people.” Alex agreed as they walked. Elijah turned his attention to Nate and chuckled softly. “Bits and pieces are how I’ve learned the most yes. But I.. met Theo back in Seattle before they all left. I was more present in helping him heal but I knew Alex, I was in the same group as his actual brother, and I taught his younger brother for about two years before we lost him.” Eli explained as they walked. It was no secret about the loss of Alexander’s youngest brother between the five of them and the entire Seraphite group but that didn’t mean Alex talked about him.​

“He misses you,” Theo said as they walked. “He won’t say it, because you know he’s always been bad about talking about his feelings.” Ezekiel had never been one to be able to admit those more serious emotions. He had conversations about harder topics with Alex mostly. Things like not feeling comfortable with all of their rules and ways in the Seraphites. He talked about being paired with people and how he did not want their either. But when it came to genuine emotions, he always hard a hard time telling others. “But he misses you. We talked about you all the time on the travel here. I was lucky to have the few I did. My mama wasn’t for that. But Max and Ben would have loved it here.”

Alex looked at Theo with a melancholic smile and nodded. "I miss him too." Alex admitted, and he did. His brother was always on his mind, even in a small part. Sometimes, during his journey, he thought about what Ezekiel would've done. "Is that so? I'm glad I was a topic of conversation during your journey." He added as they walked. Elijah looked at Nate and smiled as they walked. "We've all met at some point, and guess what? You're part of this connection too now by the way. Welcome to this large.. slightly dysfunctional and wonderful family." Eli said, clapping a hand on Nate's shoulder and patted it for a moment before he dropped his hand back to his side.​

Theo whipped his head around to the others and gasped. “How dare you say that we’re slightly dysfunctional.” He bounced as they walked, clearly not fast enough for him. “We are horrendously dysfunctional the majority of the time. Kai’s dads are like the poster people for dysfunctional. And like Kai and Ezekiel? They used to scream at each other. Not everyone can be perfect like us.” He grinned and leaned into Eli. “Though, I guess you’re probably right.” Nate laughed. He was okay with dysfunctional. His family had been too. There was nothing wrong with a little dysfunction.

Alex and Elijah both looked at Theo as he gasped and laughed, and Eli noticed the bounce in his step. Clearly they were not going fast enough and Eli knew it. "Right, I'm sorry I underestimated our dysfunctionality status." He said as they walked. "Theo, love, do you need a lap around a building or two as we walk?" He asked, seeing how energetic Theo was. Alex chuckled, shaking his head as he walked with them. Theo hadn't changed in the last few months, he was just as hyper as ever. And Eli was just as patient and calm, the perfect pair to each other.​

Theo laughed and smiled and bounced something like five times per each of their steps. “I mean, it’s not… yeah, yeah I probably should.” He could feel the itch to move spreading throughout his body. It was like his whole body was terminally restless. He squeezed Elijah’s hand before taking off, pausing only to run backwards momentarily to wave at the rest and then turn right back around and zip behind a building. Nate blinked as he watched him disappear, waving hesitantly. “Is that… normal? Does he usually run off during companion walks?”
