Fantasy The Calm After War (Always Open and Accepting)

One Week Later
For the last week, the group has been kept mostly in the dark of the war's progression. The Queen was busy trying to keep civil with the public, painting a rose tinted picture about how it's going, and had only gotten around to giving everyone a royal pardon within the last day, leaving them just enough time otherwise on who's going and who's staying behind before they were allowed to go to Lathbora Viran, thanks to the mute councilmen, they group was able to use a portal straight to the border city. It took a while to even get any information out of anybody there, but apparently, things were not going well. There was no definite answer, but they were told to go to the forward camp where General Del'Lanis was overseeing the war effort. Luckily, a few soldiers who were recently stationed at the forward camp agreed to escort the group so they didn't get lost or attacked by Orcs. The Frozen Plains made the trip tough, but eventually, the camp came into view and they were given permission to do what they wish so long as they didn't interfere with important matters. Only a few minutes after, a messenger approached them, and gave them the General's location.

Bailey O'Connor

Sitting on a cot in the pretty shit medical tent, Bailey winced as a cold rag was pushed onto the wound covering a good portion of her lower back. She had been hit with, well, she didn't really know but whatever it was it hurt. But being wounded was the last of her worries right now. While being treated, she was looking through a list of their current supplies.

"This is....this isn't where we're supposed to be," Bailey said, looking up at Herah.

"Yes I'm aware of that; I think they're being stolen."

"Yeah, no shit. Have someone get a list of everyone in charge of guarding our supplies, we'll need to - ow - interrogate them, understood?"

"Yes ser," Herah replied, taking the list of supplies, and turning to leave the tent. Before she stopped, and glanced over her shoulder. "Should I tell them where you are? I bet that they'll want to see you."

"Send someone and do what I asked."

"Of course." Herah left, leaving Bailey alone with the doctor. Bailey was not in a good place right now. She didn't get to see her family before she left, she hadn't slept in three days, and everythin was really going to shit because of a number of other problems that she couldn't even begin to list. And to be honset, she wasn't looking forward to the fact that her family and friends were here because that would only add to it. She sighed, running a and through her hair. This was going to be an ordeal.

Ari had spent the past week teaching Selra some stuff. She had zero grasp on Dark magic, but she had a lot of it. That gave him plenty to work with. Could she get over her mental blocks in a week? No amount of striking targets and pushups could make her jump that hurdle. It took soul-searching and commitment
Ari walked about the camp, strapped up and ready to go. Some of the Elves looked at him weird for wearing Elven Female Leather Armor and even moreso for not bringing any winter gear, but it worked perfectly for him. The cold didn't bother him, probably because he was smart enough to draw Heat Runes in his clothes before coming. The whiteness of everything he had would do wonders for stealth in this snowy landscape. Crossbow, Sword, Shortbow, Armor. The only thing on him that wasn't white was his eyes and his hair, and he could change his hair color at will. If anyone were to see the color of his eyes, that meant they were in Ari's range 5 minutes ago and he's just toying with them

Anyways, he thought about the Orcs and everything that happened. He knew this was all politics, but the Queen painted the Orcs as reasonless savages, yet it was pretty much the elves who started the war. The elves being that idiot councilman who Ari was enraged that he couldn't kill for destroying the peace talks. He'd have to ask Bailey what in the blue fuck happened to him. If that councilman still had his career, Ari would say fuck it and go kill the man himself because obviously the elves were dumbasses. Anyways, he didn't know the fine details of the talks, but he could probably go talk to a few Orcs. He wasn't an elf which meant that they'd be more inclined to listen to him as long as no elves were with him. It was WAY too deep of water to prevent fights as they've already started, but at bare minimum, he could see where they were mentally. He knew a few orcs and they were good friends.

"Master?"
It was Chloe. She was wearing armor herself, enchanted with runes to make it featherweight. "Yes?"
"You seem a bit spaced out. Are you ok?"
"Aye. Just thinking about all this crap we're doing. I guess Tyr is gonna dig himself deeper into PTSD unless he doesn't view Orcs as worth living." It was, of course, a ludicrous thing to say. Tyr had some form of regard for general life, but every single one of the elves he's talked to the past week has just said the same thing. Basically along the lines of slaughter them all, innocents included. Even Ari, with no typical regard for life, didn't kill innocents and definitely not children. Everything just seemed...........weird to him. He normally wouldn't give a fuck about the affairs of Faylen, but his 2 half-elf children having to fight in the upcoming battles pretty much forced him to now.

Ozzy was over sitting over a fire, making come tea for the group. He had joined after Ari had invited him, and had tried to make friends with everyone as soon as possible. Seeing how Tyr was... struggling, he was on full on mom mode, making sure that the giant bard felt okay. After Tyr had his drink, Ozzy walked over to Ari, and offered him a tin mug of hot tea. "Are you hungry? Tyr said he was gonna be making food soon."

Selra had been doing some meditating. It was for the soul searching that Ari was trying to get her to do. But there was one problem "How in the hell can anyone sit still for this long? What good could some soul searching do? Why not ask or something more simple. Maybe figure out where I could get over this hurdle. Instead of sitting here doing nothing!?" Selra sighed as she tried to work on being calm. Which was not working for her. "Ugh this is infuriating."

Ari laughed fairly hard. Her just sitting there was deeply amusing. She took his words literally when he said do some soul searching. "I didn't tell you to just sit around and doing nothing. That was on you. I just told you to do some serious soul searching. That means think deeply about the magic you're using, where you want to be with it, how it's making you feel, and your goals with it all. Practice the magic and its use in battle. You'll get to soon enough, but you will never begin to use it on a higher level if you let it consume you. You'll just keep being an unstable berserker. Effective in battle, but unable to teach anyone anything. Do whatever you use to relieve stress and think about it."

"I'll make some food myself later on. I also have to make something for Noam and Elaina. Since they're out though and we're going out to scout for potential ambush points soon, I'll just eat later." The kids were with Bailey and Tyr's, as in protective custody. They weren't on the field at all, just Elaina and Noam. Elaina were with the Clerics and Noam was right behind the Vanguard with the Battle Mages. For the past week, Ari had been going out of his way to avoid Tyr. Preparing for battle, Ari was put on the Archer Brigade, so it was fairly easy to avoid him. Ari wasn't the commander of the archers, but he had proven himself to be SO good by beating out the commander of the Archer Brigade in a shootout, that Ari was given a small unit to command on the side. A unit of about 20. The Commander of the Brigade had fucked him over royally by giving him mostly Privates and those who haven't fought very much or the trouble makers, but Ari would make it work. The commander REALLY didn't take his loss in front of the entire Brigade well. He though he was gonna challenge Ari and put Ari in his place, but no dice there. When Ari beat him, it was thorough humiliation. Here you go, Mr. Waessssssssssmmmor. Unfortunately, by the order of the Queen as per our wager, here is your unit. Make of them as you will and try to survive, the commander had told him. Luckily though, he had a High Archer who was on his side, despite the fact that he was defying direct orders from the commander of the Brigade. Together, they put the unit through physical and mental hell for 3 days straight, running battle drills non-stop from dusk to dawn. Night Ops, Near Ambush, Trap Setting, Target shooting, Sparring Matches. After a week, they knew what the fuck was going on. They weren't the best, but damn would they be efficient with what they knew

As for the stuff with Tyr, after the events of last week, there was just no point. Ari had decided to leave them alone and let them go about their own business, not even bothering to talk to him Telepathically...........and talking to Bailey only in telepathy and never outside of General of War stuff that she initiated. Just like Selra, Ari had a lot of soul searching to do and he had done so in the past week, but not enough apparently. Ozzy though....... Ari liked Ozzy. Ozzy could stay. Avery never shut the fuck up about Tyr though, which made Ari want to rip his hair out. Avery's hair, not his own. Those shiny long luscious locks were there to stay. "Speaking of which, where is he in this battle?.....and you for that matter?"

Arabelle had decided to come with her husband and go to the battlefield, she didn’t want to stay with the kids, she wanted to help fight. She had been wandering around and exploring, but she saw Ari and walked over to him. She took his hands and kissed him gently. “Hey, love,” she said quietly, smiling up at him. She had grown to tolerate Avery a little more, but she definitely hated him. Ozzy was cute though, so she didn’t mind him. Arabelle hadn’t yet figured out where she was going to help, since she wasn’t super talented of a fighter at the moment, though Alison had been training her, and since she could barely sleep she spent nights training. Her nightmares never went away, they were only getting worse, and it showed. Her hands were always shaking and her hair was starting to fall out.

“You shouldn’t try to move much miss Bailey, it doesn’t look too serious but a wound can still get infected...” A look of worry on Luna’s face, she hated seeing anyone in pain. Holding onto her staff she gently placed a hand on bailey’s should to try and stop her from moving around so much. Looking at the wound she tilted her in curiosity “that’s and odd shape...I wonder what could have caused this?” Dipping her finger in some of the blood she sniffed it then tasted it “nothing truly out of the ordinary...”

Raven, still drunk from his excursion the night before, had managed to make his way over to Ari. “Hey....you! Ari!” Laughing as he watched Arabelle give him a kiss “such a lovely sight, young love!!” He exclaimed as he sat down tipping a bottle back and quickly drinking. “You have that look in your eye like you aren’t exactly sure about this....not to mention the pissants who they have you...” walking over to one of the privates he sniffed him and grinned “how are these ones really with a bow? Because even like this i could tear their heads off....” Raven being undead was neither bothered by the cold or affected. “So What is the plan my friend? We can’t possibly let anything bad happen to your lovely wife now can we?” Thinking about how willow would react have him chills, but the thought of all the blood he would soon consume made him chuckle.

"Well, apparently someone in my scouting party stepped on an underground explosion rune. That's what I was told," Bailey said, straightening up so the lower half of her torso could be wrapped. She then stood, moving out of the way as another soldier limped his way in. Bailey put her undershirt back on, motiining for Luna to follow her outside. The cold, despite not really wearing anything to keep her warm at the moment, wasn't bothering Bailey. Infact, it was actually keeping her alert.

Outside the medical tent, a woman was waiting with her armor. It only took a few moments to put what she needed back on, allowing her to turn to Luna. "So, where is everyone?" She asked. Scarlett-Wulf Scarlett-Wulf

“Currently my father, Arabelle, and Ari are on the front preparing their archers.....I haven’t heard back from any of the others as of late or any men that they were with” flipping through some poets she had to check. “But as far as my wards or barriers I have up none of them have been tampered with or....passed through, although the one around our supplies has been...in lamens terms there’s a slight change to it, if I hadn’t weaved it so thoroughly I wouldn’t have known but I can’t tell what had altered it”

Ari sighed when he saw Arabelle. Unlike him, she looked worse for wear due to her paltry sleep level. "Oi, why are you out here, Arabelle? You need to be back at the castle trying to overcome those nightmares using Faylen's best. You can't possibly fight effectively like you are." Ari had ordered Alison to stay with Arabelle. After 7 years of being blind and little sleep, she simply didn't have the skill to be fighting in a war. If Ari had a sleep potion on him, he'd use it on her. A worst nightmare in the future was a small price to pay to be at full capacity to fight in a war. He should put her in a fucking coma and have those memories altered........altering memories! Holy shit. Avery could do it if only temporary. It'll hopefully give her some peace at night. Plus, Avery was still on Arabelle's bad side since his desire for Ari's........ er....... love is greater than his desire for Arabelle's good regard. He made a mental note to remember to use it and see how it goes.

Raven came over and interjected how he could destroy all the Privates under his command. Ari laughed at the truthfulness of the statement. "While I don't doubt it, Rook, don't threaten my soldiers. I can't have them psyched out before we go and fight. My Privates aren't the best, but they have my mind and the mind of my Fantastic Right Hand man to plan all my attacks out so even the most scared of Privates can do the job well..........Where are you in this entire military action? I'm sniping and commanding the Guerrilla tactics." Ari believed that Rook would either be in reinforcements or in the Vanguard to augment the initial force.

"Huh. Okay then, I'll go see how they're settling in. Excuse me," She said, walking last Luna with a wince. Her back still, and the lack of proper medical supplies was evident. Herah had better hurry up with that list, this was starting to piss her off. And that cam across on her face. She didn't have that kind expression she had in the castle most of the time, the one she used with the nobles and everyone else up there. Her elegant High Prophet attitude was gone. And I mean, that's understandable. With everything thats happen over the past week, her being a little more than angry is hopefully, understood by the other. Her men sure did seem to get it. The only bad thing about this was her intense craving for the strongest booze some of her men smuggled in. This stress wasn't good for the progress she's made in recovering from a major problem in her life. Upon seeing her friends and family, you would also expect some of that stress to kinda fade, or that resting bitch face to go away. Yeah, no way.

"He'll go where he's needed, when he's needed, Ari. You're the only one I asked to be given command of some sort," Bailey said, coming up from behind. "Nothing against you Raven, but I don't really trust people I've only talked to for about ten minutes." Something was defiantly off about her. Normally, she'd be thrilled to see everyone but that excitement that they normally see even after a day or two wasn't there. She had dark circles under her eyes, her hair was pulling back into a ponytail, which she like, never does. And normally, she tends to be more polite. Looking around, she didn't seem to react really to almost everyone being there. "Hmmm, I thought you'd have Arabelle stay behind. Whatever, have you guys been given your tents?" She asked. Bailey was rather distant, a million other things were on her mind, a warm welcome was not one of them. “I-I wanted to help,” she told him, looking up at him. “I didn’t want to stay at the castle while you fought in a war,” she added, biting her lip. “I can be useful, I-I can still help,” she said, almost pleading. She didn’t want to be separated from him.

Ari cared far too much about Arabelle's well-being to let her into combat. He always let Arabelle do whatever the hell she wanted, as her freedom of choice was everything. He never even ironically thought about needing to tell her what to do with her life. However, this was one of those rare moments where he simply had to. "Medical, Base defense, something that's not the frontlines. You CAN'T go out on the field like you are. You absolutely have to sleep Arabelle or you're gonna die out here." In all honesty, Ari hadn't even thought about where Arabelle would be placed, thinking that it would be a given considering her present state, hence her in front of him now.

"Look, go see Avery. He can change a few memories in your head for better sleep, if only temporary. If you get some sleep, or otherwise find a non combat position to be placed in, I won't have you sent back to the castle. It's too dangerous otherwise." Arabelle could easily polish off 7 years of combat dormancy. She couldn't work around a lack of sleep though.

Then Bailey walked up. Same problem as Arabelle. An unholy mixture of war, stress, and lack of sleep. Ari, as always with Bailey, was blunt. No amount of High Prophet or General would change that, even though he, for the first and probably last time ever, was under her command. "Holy shit. Same fucking issue. You got bigger shit to worry about than my unit. Go the fuck to sleep."

Luna quickly followed behind Bailey to keep an eye on her. “Yes mam, if you don’t mind when you return to your tent and I could take a more detailed look at that, although my father may be better at medical issues....please ask him to examine it” going quiet when she had begun to speak to the others.

“No offense taken, I would completely understand that” giving Bailey a salute when she first approached them. Looking between the two he waited for them to halt their speaking. Feeling a bit of tension on the subject of Arabelle he cleared his throat. “If I could interrupt you all for a moment and offer a proposal to this issue” smiling as he stepped over to Arabelle, his smile fading. “I could watch her during the battle, acting as a shield....Ari more than the rest of you know that I am hard to kill and it wouldn’t affect any of the battle plans. It would also allow Ari to fight properly and keep his head clear” waiting patiently for a response from all parties involved.

He had taken a slight bit longer than he had planned to return from the scouting he assigned himself too. A growl sounding from him as he looks at the shaft of his spear quickly. Many fresh runes being in it that where words of both blessings and enchantments on his spear. The spearhead having the carving of a dragon sitting with it's wings touching together at the claws to form the spearhead. Something he had gotten into working at each day during the travels to both keep him sane and to prepare him for any fights that may grow and happen out of the blue. As he started to travel around the camp quickly. Still wearing his normal armor as he growls to himself. His draconic half helping to keep him warm, doing quite a decent job as he was almost like a walking furnace...Though to be honest he felt chilled to the bone due to his naturally high temperature. Eventually spotting Baily as he runs on over. Putting the spear away with care as he bows slightly.

"May I be of any assistance?" He asks. Slightly rigid as he was noticing the annoyance on her face when he approached. Looking at the posture she wore with a slight bit of concern before covering it up with a neutral look.

Giving a quick glance to the rest of the group as he took their presence into account...Though giving them nothing other than that. Seeing as he was more or less on duty as a true soldier of the force.

@all of you others...Not really gonna tag...Sorry.

She shook her head. “I’m fine,” she lied, looking up at him. “I’ve been training a lot, and I slept for a whole hour last night. Besides, I don’t trust Avery. Do you really think he won’t hurt me? He still hates me.”

"Yea, well you're missing 5 of the 6 you need, Arabelle. You're not going out to the field without some sleep. With your paltry sleep, you're sluggish. There is no work-around to a lack of sleep." Ari said. As much as Ari loved her determination, it would only end in her death if she didn't sleep. Avery won't hurt you unless he plans on me killing him. "Avery will do quite literally anything for me, Arabelle. It's your best bet right now for enough sleep before we either start these operation. He'll keep you safe and do his absolute best." Because he thought Ari was gonna kiss him if he did enough for him. Fat chance, but Ari had been getting along better with Avery lately.

Raven offered his own solution to the issue. With his Violin, it would be pretty hard to get to Arabelle unless the enemy is something of a berserker. It was a good plan, as expected of Raven, but at the end of the day, it wasn't really up to Ari. Ari had to fight with peace of mind. It wasn't just him lone-wolf sniping. He also had to command a unit as well. It was up to Bailey. "Go get to Avery, Arabelle. An hour a night for the past week is terrible."

Arabelle sighed softly. She felt useless, she didn’t want to drag the team down but she didn’t just want to be stuck at home doing nothing while her husband was out fighting in a war. “Fine,” she relented, looking down. She ran her hand through her hair and a small chunk of it came with her hand. She sighed and hugged Ari. “Be careful, please,” she told him, and went to find Avery. When she did she called out his name so he knew she was there.

In between two trees not that far from the forward camp, a man in wizard robes and a hood stood. On his shoulder was a black cat with glowing green eyes. The man's name was Darian Kingsley, and he was looking at the forward camp. 'Huh seems like a military camp. Wonder why they're here. Maybe there's a war near here. Well that's none of my business.'

"Well, if I can lure them all into the forest, then it'll pose no issues then. We blow them up.........."
Avery was put with the Mages, each magic type having their own operations tent. He was in the Psychic Tent going over his place in the fight. He, like a lot of the other Psions, was far too squeamish and physically weak to go in the actual fight, so he was a Guerrilla as well. His Illusion Magic would work wonders. He heard Arabelle call for him and got up. Luckily Avery was an ambiguous name, as not a single person here knew that he wasn't actually a woman. He changed his appearance drastically daily, but typically stayed a female

"Hey Arabelle........." he looked around for a bit for Ari, expecting him to be nearby. When he found nothing, he turned back to Arabelle, confused. "........did you need something?" It was highly unusual to Avery for Arabelle to even look at him without murderous intent, so the fact that she was right here NOT poisoning him with a look was......weird

Amongst Ari's unit was an Elven girl who was VERY close to getting discharged due to her ineptitude with a bow. She did, however, possess 2 abilities that Ari found incredibly useful: Sensory and Traps. She couldn't fight well, but she could see, hear, sense, and place traps. That alone made her useless as a Guerrilla since she couldn't follow up on a surprise attack. She was put through hell and was very self-conscious and shy, bullied often and when combatives came around, she was pretty much a punching bag, as the only thing she could use was traps. Even her dagger skills were terrible at minimum. She wouldn't be able to cut a dead deer. Needless to say, at the end of the week, she was convinced that all she'd do was place a few traps then wait while everyone else did the actual luring and winning. She was........upset about it and begged Ari to help her find something useful to do in the unit. Ari had to think long and hard, but he found something useful for her. Sniper teams were 2 minimum and Ari didn't have his second. Imagine her joy when Ari asked her to be his second. She'd point out targets of opportunity, set traps and alert Ari when someone was near or activated a trap. She was basically his nest egg upkeep and target designator. Ari didn't ACTUALLY need her, but it'd be less to worry about, so why the hell not? No soldier left behind.

She saw the guy looking over the camp, her extreme senses coming into play, and alerted Ari. "Sir, there's someone near here. Unauthorized. Will you confront him?"
Ari looked at her and thought for a moment. "Aye. Thank you Evelyn." Ari walked off towards the man. As he approached, he called out. "We're doing important stuff here. A battle will be taking place soon, so it's best for you to leave. The next people to see you will assume you're working with the orcs as a blade for hire."

As Darian was turning to leave, he was approached by someone. Upon being approached unexpected, Darian was flustered also due to the fact that the last time he had spoken to another person was about three months ago. "Th-the orcs? What reasons would the orcs need to hire people as blades for hire?"

“Yeah, I do,” she said softly. “Ari sent me. I haven’t slept for more than an hour every night for the past week, and I’m falling apart at the seams. He wants you to temporarily change my memories so I can sleep for a while,” she told him quietly. Her hands were trembling.

Ari shrugged. "Who knows? I guess the same reason why Elves would hire humans. Different tactics that are otherwise impossible or not as effective. I'm human working with elves." Ambushes? Assassins? Special Ops? Night Ops? Amphibious attacks? Naval attacks? Air Attacks? There was a host of things a force could take on a mercenary or mercenary group for.

Avery nodded. All the pieces connected now. She wanted to help Ari, but Ari said she's not doing a thing without sleep, especially not fighting. Avery could go along with that. "Alright then. Follow." Avery took Arabelle to his tent. It smelled luxurious, not like they were in a field, that's for sure. Teddy Bears, journals, perfume were all over in the tent. There was a single dagger in the tent floor, and that was his weapon. It was lying on a fluffy bed roll with a blanket that had a picture of Ari and Tyr kissing

"Go ahead and lie down. Since Ari wants me to do this for you, I'll put a lot more effort into it than I did the pirate crew I attacked you all with." Avery could do this in less than 5 seconds, but it would be flimsy.

Arabelle refrained from rolling her eyes when she saw his tent, and she obeyed him in silence. It was clear that she was still uncomfortable with him, but she was probably only a few days away from losing her mind so it wasn’t much of a priority. Not dying came first.

"The elves hiring humans? Is there some conflict going on?" Darian says, trying to think why multiple groups would be hiring blades for hire, and instantly went to a war.
