Tales of Ristafel

@Xenonia

(:'() Poor emerald.

I'd just like to point out that the whole unrequited love thing is my most hated story trope EVER and I feel really bad every time I unintentionally invoke said trope in an rp.

When you say hated you mean you hate when it's used or you hate it because of the FEELS it gives you

the latter moreso. But it does annoy me just how much it's used, for example in every anime ever that has any semblance of a romantic subplot.

no, I'm pretty sure out of character that she's made up her mind to stay, otherwise why did she just idly stand there that whole time instead of walking off again? In character though Vallen still thinks she has good reason to leave. besides, Even If Ayrenn does say no, even though he just said he'd go anywhere with her, he'd feel obliged to try and convince her of the opposite. Vallen doesn't really know what he wants until something happens that he doesn't want most of the time, he's that impulsive at the moment. I hope throughout this rp to gradually tone that aspect of him down, but it's literally been like half a day so far.

Im going to be gone for awhile after my next post, ill chime in and such, but again, as always, if i am MIA, just assume i am blindly following, lost in thought or so.

I apologize for somehow making arguably the most unlikeable character of the bunch, as more and more of your characters are starting to hate his guts. I have a feeling he'll get killed by the party before he can learn how to better conduct himself around them.

@DergTheDergon Don't worry, I find your character likeable. His first impression wasn't the best, but I'm sure everyone will warm up to him.

However, I must say that he went from attraction to "true love" really damn quick. Normally relationships go attraction -> dating/getting to know each other -> love, with that middle section taking a week to a month minimum. Vallen has only known Ayrenn for an hour or two.

Sometimes characters mesh with a party sometimes they don't. I once made a paladin for a party that ended up being a racial supremacist elf, a dick-ass thief and a plotting minotaur with delusions of world conquest. Fun game.

@CallSign I would have to agree with that second point in retrospect. I have noticed this is a common theme among many of my rp characters, for reasons I don't fully understand myself. I'm just a massive hopeless romantic I guess.

Allow me to take a stab at it for you. We've been playing this for about a week now, give or take, but the plot has only "progressed" an hour or two. It's hard to keep timescale in check when they're so far off one another, so the players begin to rush time consuming interactions. You're not the first and certainly not the last, so don't be hard on yourself.

@Darksoul180. Two things.

One: Technically "thee" is the correct word to use when referring to "you". "Thy" means "your". So the correct phrasing would be "I love thee" as opposed to "I love thy". I am just nitpicking, but it should be a handy thing to know for the future.

Two: Your post appears to have stopped half-way through something happening. Are you able to update this for us? Thanks.

Much appreciated friend. I fixed it, and thanks for the info on Thy and Thee, i am sure i knew that at some point, but was not thinking. Also, i refreshed to see the latest post, and that would be why my last few words got deleted before i posted. Will look out for that next time.

I'd like to come clean on something, @MechaGhoul . I may have slightly metagamed the lashes by abusing my knowledge of rope and whips.

Whips are tapered toward the business end to reduce air resistance on the faster-moving sections. The end normally has a small but hard weight on it that allows the force and momentum of the rest of the whip to be channeled into one piece of mass, producing the signature effects and power of the whip. From my experience, the weight makes it a bit easier to control as well. At their thickest point (just below the grip), whips tend to be around half an inch in diameter (see: Indiana Jones with his whip coiled; the whip is as thick as his pointer finger, which is about half an inch).

In this rope's case, you have a lot weighing you down, so to speak. The uniformly thicker diameter means you have more air resistance. The thicker diameter of the tip means the actual impact is spread out over more skin, dulling the damage. The more forgiving composition of the rope (it's a bunch of threads woven together, so there's space between them - hence the ability to bend rope) compared to the solid weight at the end of a whip means the blow won't make full use of the momentum.

Now, the belt option would've left a mark and been painful through Lily's leathered-up belly. You end up with less leverage due to length, but you have the buckle, which is a very hard weight with a large amount of mass. Think of it like a sword and a mace of equal length: which will put the biggest dent in armor (assuming the armor won't be pierced by the blade, that is)?

So yeah, saw it as a chance to have a badass moment, showing off Lily's enhanced durability by playing unfair, but felt bad for playing unfair, so here's this post apologizing for it. I feel bad for having deceived you, and am sorry. I'll try not to let it happen again.

@CallSign

Feh, really I ought to be blaming myself for not paying enough attention to it and the situation at hand. Which I'mma probably do.

Still gesture is appreciated for coming clean. I'll need to make sure to pay more attention than I did when initially postan and what not. Anyway on with the rambling/dialogue, whatever it may classify as...

Sure the rope had its downfalls. Hell one of the reasons I went for a rope, was in part of the structure, which makes it less painful than a proper flogging. And the code had not been fully explained. Nor is the party is aboard the ship proper where discipline matters far more. But still it was a situation where discipline needed to be inflicted.

More or less I used it, (or would've gone with rod, following the rule of thumb) because of its use in the corporal punishment Starting/Caning. A good lesser offensive/punishment dealio.

Which with a rope, it is essentially less of a flogging and something more along the lines of caning, due to the qualities you mentioned. Though granted, it uses a short piece of rope, instead of the full length I used.

Again I curse myself for not paying attention to that. Cutting it would've been better, Buuut uh rope of crew, respecting property.

I'm just gonna use that to vainly cover for my foolishness there.

As flagellation really does need a good tapered end, of a whip, to be more cutting/piercing into the flesh. Again due to the qualities you mentioned previously, of the diameter of a whip being small and the wind resistance/friction against the strike being reduced.

Sloppy mistake on my part for not caring or really taking into account the diameter of the rope, along with length. And those other factors. Dunno why, I didn't take them into account. Shoulda, but suppose I will make sure to for next time.

Still the starting/caning tends to be a fairly effective corporal punishment. Not as much as say, actual flogging, but it gets the job done. Without say giving more noticeable scarwounds that comes from the lacerations of a whip, and doing more damage to the body.

The divided ends of the nine tails is real fun for that as it will get into the gushy fleshy bits. But I digress.

Still, even with the factors, a good swing with a rope, is unpleasant. But so would a sword striking against armor. But that doesn't stop it from being inferior to the same length mace.

Though of course the striking with rope, especially one with a large diameter and good sized length against leathery skin people, isn't effective but mistakes are mistakes.

One I could safely chuck down as being, Pressmaster Crawley called for attention of sailors like three times and nothing, and annoyance his journey won't be done to port. And then the fact that he noticed one of the impressed sailors was eating, one that looked human enough. Sans like magic tat, but many normal sailors got tattoos. And quite possibly that he didn't want to scuffle Beltway's belt. Also leverage is nice, and by far he prefers having a decent length at foes, as he has a preferred and more well practiced tool.

Of course this situation came down to me screwing the pooch on that and not fully paying attention, on the factors that would be at play and recognizing the better options. IE. the belt. Proper switch woulda worked better as well, but no one had one.

But eh, what can ya do?

And besides Corporal Punishment, while yes, is about being physically nasty is just a means to the end. That being deterring unwanted behavior.

If Lily stops such things due to just the annoyance of having to get struck with caning or a proper flagellation. Then in a way, the punishment was effective. Maybe not as effective as preferred, but the true end game is deterance, not just corporal punishment for the sake of it.

However I'mma gonna guess, that ain't gonna be the case. And that Lily will think of Crawley more along the lines of oh, 'bitch ass punk.' And due to being a laughable bitch ass punk, not listening.

And as such, at least in his mind, he'd need to continue on with corporal punishment.

Probably with a different tool. Also taking into account exactly how thick those leathery spooky scales are.

But hey, I'm probably just rambling like a silly loon. Or a mad man. Or both.

@spandez

I don't mind you yelling thoughts at the priest, but your character should have more reason to be in the area, other than he was eating a salda outside, haha. if your character was passing by, i would understand, but if he was there the whole time, he should know how everyone was provoking the preist, and how he was simply calling out for everyone to get a move on. I am generally confused why everyone is taking him raising himself on a platform, to get attention and be more audible, to shout a gest of "Hey, lets get moving! We have a date with adventure". I can understand a few taking it as him showing off, but i think it is a bit rediclous that everyone just assumes the Priest means to put himself above others, when he has done nothing leading up to such, other than attempt to be a peace maker. Everyone is assuming he is a jackass, even though this is his first act of anger, and only after being provoked, poked at, and prodded from the moment he started associating with this group.

Maybe sounds a bit ranty, but, i understand Ajax, it fits him as a hateful person of any magic or holy user, but everyone? RP wise, it just seems like everyone is finding every reason to hate the priest, even though he has only acted in defense, and speaking kind words, baring a large smile. I don't see why everyone has the same assumption that he is such a bad person, when he has done nothing prior to being a bad person. And the "pedestal" situation seems a bit ridiculous, when he was murmuring the pray to himself, so only people paying attention to him would hear. Then simply raising himself, and calling out to everyone trying to get everyone moving. Why did this turn into everyone hating Gustav? I simply don't understand, except for Ajax, and I can sort of understand El Saldo.

To be honest, I'm a little confused right now. I was under the impression that he was meant to come off as a huge jerk, kind of like what Zerohex is doing with Ajax. I mean, if you want some examples of why people wouldn't like him IC:

  • Claiming he's a pacifist, then burning the shit out of a guy's hands, then smiling and giving a really smarmy, "I forgive you for making me burn you.", bit afterwards.
  • The fact that he keeps trying to just order random people around despite having basically no authority whatsoever.
  • The flagrant showing-off of his powers and general self-aggrandizing "I'm better than you" attitude his every line of dialogue and narration practically oozes.
  • The constant attempts to play all sides and inconsistent belief system.
  • The general smug and self-righteous attitude and talking down to everyone, sometimes literally.

Between those, the lack of any traditional priest powers, the talk of his adventuring days back in his 'youth' despite being like 30, and that he's a priest that pretty much abandoned his parish to go hang out with some jerks he doesn't really like and loot a grave/religious site I assumed that it was all foreshadowing for some kind of crazy twist and he was going to turn out to be, like, a wizard who was impersonating the real Gustav for some reason.
