Tales of Ristafel

I owe all of you an apology. I was very uncooperative, disrespectful, and a flat out bitch last night.

@Zerohex I'm sorry I wasn't listening to you. I've reread your posts and realized you were right this entire predicament. I never should have acted the way I did to you. Or anyone else. I hope you can forgive me for my immature behavior.

@CallSign I want to apologize to you as well. Please, for the love of god, point out to me when I'm controlling yours or someone else's character. Honestly, I'm completely oblivious to the fact that I do that. And once agin, I want to apologize. It's a habit I haven't been able to get rid of yet.

As for everyone else, I apologize once again. I can't say it enough. I never meant for all of us to not get along. And I especially regret I was the one who caused all of this. I hope you can all forgive me... If not, I understand.

I will be editing my post. Ayrenn will continue with the punch, but no blood will be spilled. I went too far with that, and it was completely out of character.

@The Velveteen Rabbit Hey, stop acting like this was all your fault. I did nothing but aggravate the sitatuion and was being much less respectful to Zerohex then you were. Anyway, let's forget about that. I will edit my own posts according to Velveteen's, and we should be able to carry on now. You guys are all cool peeps and I trust we'll be able to really take this rp somewhere awesome now! (> :D )

posted a long ass post. Yes you have to read it. Yes all of it.

No I don't apologize for it. Ajax had to pose.

@Zerohex if you feel it's unrealistic for Vallen to pull off what I describe for any reason, feel free to let me know and I'll fix it. I'm not knowledgeable about hand-to-hand combat.

okay, I'll try to elaborate. The way i imagine it, he leapt so that his fist was eye-level with ajax and threw a punch towards his face, which ajax sidestepped to the left. Vallen then shifted all his weight towards the right and upwards using his momentum, causing him to flip sideways as he fell back down. google full twist if you still can't picture it right, it's a gymnastics term.

That seems physically impossible. You can't just change momentum in midair. If you're doing a jump-punch towards Ajax, you're moving in an arc directly towards Ajax. You'd be stuck going at that direction and speed until you collided with something, and that something would be Ajax's fist.

no no no he didn't change momentum. the way i picure it he was moving from right to left that entire time, and ajax's fist came from the left, so he was just barely able to carry himself just past the trajectory of ajax's fist, as well as ajax enitrely because ajax was stepping towards the left. if Zerohex also thinks it's bullshit i'll change it. i've never been very good with describing combat scenes in writing (>:<)

edit: i think what vallen was doing was closer to a barrel roll than a full twist now that i think about it.

I get what you tried to do (I think I do anyway) but if you're doing a superman punch (yes that's what it's called, for real), where you leap off your feet into a punch like what Vallen did, you're basically a sitting duck. You can't really change your momentum like that mid-air, especially not upwards, and your current momentum is carrying you in the direction of your punch. It adds force but its big issue is that it leaves you vulnerable. Like, Vallen would have to be able to doublejump or have some kind of pseudo flight to be able to go upwards after leaping into his first attack like that.

As an aside, Ajax didn't sidestep, he did something called bobbing and weaving. As the punch comes in he slightly bends his knees, twists his waist to his left and bends it down, taking his head off the punch's trajectory, that's the bobbing. As he does this he moves into an attacking position, not away from Vallen but towards him, that's weaving. In this case it's easy because the bobbing motion lends itself to the type of punch he's throwing, an overhand right, a semi-circular, vertical punch as shown in the picture I linked in my post. So rather than straighten up to throw something, he throws a punch that goes right along with the motion he used to dodge.

Ooooooooh I see. Thanks, on the bright not this will probably help me visualize lots of these kind of situations in future. On the not-so-bright side, there seems to be no way Vallen's going to avoid that punch.

Just realized, both times he attacked someone so far he's failed miserably. Does that mean i'm so awful at trying to visualize how someone might react to most kinds of attacks that playing a hand-to-hand character was a dumb move?

Well, usually I find it's best to stay away from things you couldn't possibly actually write because you have no idea how they work. If you want to write about something you should probably take the time to research it up a bit, get a basic level of understanding which you can then spice up with fantastical stuff if necessary.

Makes sense, problem is i actually had no idea just how hard it is for me to write about this kind of thing until i tried in this rp.

Google has long been my best friend for writing and roleplaying. Don't let it get you down; learning is fun! On the plus side, learning this sort of thing also gives you base knowledge for real life (though it doesn't substitute for practice - gotta keep the muscles strong).

For what it's worth, you're doing decently all things considered.

@DergTheDergon

Sorry to get nitpicky but you might want Vallen to like, use his reflexes to raise his also yier-powered free hand to his face in an attempt to block and reduce the damage or maybe just go as limp as possible to try and go with the blow's momentum, which should send him rolling backwards down the street rather than smash him right into the floor.

I'm saying this 'cause if he just gets caught right on his face with a counter overhand right by Ajax and puts zero defensive measures in place he should probably get knocked out, you know? Considering he doesn't have enhanced durability or anything of the sort.

I have posted, but if you want to make this edit I am okay with it. It does not conflict with El Saldo's actions.

Er, since you say you don't know anything about fighting: getting counterpunched, that is, your own punch dodged, parried or blocked followed immediately by an opponent's punch while your guard is not yet up and your footing still off adds to the damage you take, because you just took a punch when you were very vulnerable, if not at your most vulnerable.

Hell, in this case, since Vallen went for a superman punch he was straight up jumping into Ajax's fist, and that adds to the damage even further. An overhand is a power punch, a very strong one and Ajax threw it with his dominant hand, which means the shot should be pretty damn strong. I'm not saying I want your character to get knocked out, just saying that he should probably put up some manner of defensive measure to justify why he hasn't completely lost consciousness.

think of it like this: you're learning stuff about hand to hand right here without having to google and sift through stuff or suffering through a McDojo. You can use this for this character and others that may come if you ever feel like playing an unarmed fighter again.

indeed, and I probably will play a few more, cuz martial arts in general is freaking cool. Btw googled mcdojo and as I understand it it's basically a term for an extremely commercialized martial arts school, correct?

Calling them "martial arts school" is a stretch because they don't teach you how to fight. They're there to take away as much money as you'll give them while giving you the illusion of knowing martial arts, at best you might learn some basics and some drills and that's it. It's a scam.
