the price we pay
So far, Qef had delivered five letters, three packages, and seven mouth-to-ear messages. And it was only eleven in the morning. That was pretty damn good, if she did say so herself. A prided smile lit her face as she walked into the post office and leaned over the desk in front. A tired-looking man glanced up for a moment, then looked back at his work.
"Size two letter, addressed to a Beish Pefina. Lives over by the blacksmith in a red brick house with dark blue roofing." The man stuck out his hand, which held an envelope.
Qef furrowed her brows. "There's a whole box back there filled with older letters. They go first." Her hands found their way to her hips, where they sat in defiance.
"Said it was important. The man paid double, so it goes first."
Qef grumbled under her breath and snatched the letter from her boss. She had thought he was over bribery, but apparently not.
"And no more of that backtalk, miss." The man peered over his glasses, a glowering look in his eyes. "You said you needed this job."
Qef was silent as she turned and stalked out of the office, her mind fuming. Sure, it was a small thing to most people, but this was her job. She wanted to do it the best she could. People like her boss drove her crazy, but there was no help for it.
The young woman closed the door roughly behind herself, then leaned down to set the letter on the cobblestone ground. As she stood back up, textured black suddenly began to tinge her face and hands, and her legs began to shorten and shift. Her inky hair became feathers of the same colour, and her arms were draped with larger feathers. Her dress seemed to melt into her body, which was now the size of a large bird, and her feet became scaly and ended in claws. Her face had taken on a dramatic change as well, for her mouth elongated and hardened into a beak, which let out a harsh caw as the transformation was complete.
Qef clutched the letter in her claws and took off, her wings beating furiously until she was high enough in the air. Once she rose above the rooftops, her wings opened into a glide, catching updrafts and sending her soaring high above the city. Her sharp eyes began to scan for the house she had been assigned to. It wasn't long before she found what she was looking for, and she folded her wings into a dive.
As she neared the ground, Qef spread open her wings, slowing her down quickly. As her clawed feet touched the ground, she began to shift once more, her transformation now taking place backwards as she morphed back into a human. It finished quickly, and she was left standing in front of the red brick house with a letter in her hand. She stepped up to the door and knocked, but no one answered.
Why have an urgent letter delivered if no one was home?
Qef tucked the letter under the door, which was what she did with every unanswered door. She turned and prepared to shift, but a sudden pain stabbed her side. She let out a gasp and sank to the ground, her head pounding fiercely and her vision blurry. She realized see that she had shifted one too many times, and that she would have to rest for several minutes.

Teftin wondered what Evasus had done to have such a punishment inflicted upon itself. From what she had seen, it didn't seem very deserving. The only crime she had seen it commit was secrecy, which was fine by her. Everyone had their secrets. Still, it would be interesting to know the truth.
The girl turned as a new voice came from the entrance of the shack, that being one of a female dragonkin. She stated that the elder would see them, and Teftin guessed Evasus knew who that was. "Tell me, Evasus: do you often go to cities and towns? What are they like?" She walked to the door, waiting for the being.
