Fantasy Tales of Arcadia

The lady smiled, "Well I guess I might be making some family of yours jealous." As she downed half of the new tankard a man sat beside her. "I assume you're Peter." She took a moment before continuing, "You'd be right saying I'm powerful and very much incredible, however I seek something that was stolen from me long ago." She took another swig of her alcohol, "It's actually quite ancient, but I heard from some reliable sources that your guild may possibly have it. If that's true I'd be willing to match whatever price you seek to have it back." She was not one to lie about much, and she would never jest about the aether catalyst. "However I'd rather discuss the matter in private. It's of utmost importance, and no offense but your family should have no business in the matter. I do hope you understand the seriousness of it." As she finished she finished off her second mug of alcohol and quickly pointed to the empty tankard, "You sure this is your strongest stuff? I'm not feeling much of a tingle." She gave a grin that said, 'I'm totally beating your drinking kings.'

@CNHart

Adelaide smiled, "I'm sure you'll choose the path that leads you to happiness." She then left the building and went to the tavern to rent a room.

Peter raises a brow as she spoke, "Well, that's a lot to swallow." He stands, jabbing a thumb towards the stairs, "To my office then, I'll tell you what I know and see if we have what you're looking for." He looks to Pork, "No one is to disturb us." The most stern he's been when he spoke this evening. Pork gave a nod of understanding. In a few moments, as he waits for the lady to finish he steps off towards the stairs leading up to a series of rooms, the last of which on the right happened to be his office. If she had followed him he would instantly close the door behind her and take a seat at his desk. He gestures towards a single chair that was opposite of him, "Please..." He breathes aloud, leaning back to get comfortable. "We have many historical weapons, and we donate to very few collectors for coin; however... You aren't after those. You aren't a collector. The Aether is your interest." His voice was neutral in tone, his gaze blank but held true towards her, "Your name before I discuss anything further."

@Cailfox

The woman had followed him silently and sat down. When he spoke she smiled when he mentioned the aether, "Well well, I guess you do have it don't you?" She giggled a little, "My name is Nia, and yes I am no meager collector." Seeing that he already knew what she was seeking she dispelled her half disguise, her glowing blue horns revealing themselves. "The aether itself is of little interest to me at this point, the artifact I seek on the otherhand... much different. You see, those who know of the aether don't ACTUALLY understand what it is or what it's capable of. My family does understand what it is, hence these gorgeous horns of ours, granted the rest of my family have different horns for different reasons." It was rare she talked to anyone who had even heard of the aether, and fewer who knew she was involved with it. Truly he was of interest.

@CNHart

Peter

"Nia. No one else will know it outside this room if you wish it." He nods his head, the horns drew his attention but aside from a long glance he didn't appear wholly perturbed. He intertwined his fingers, his elbows propped upon his desk, "I understand enough... Those horns are the aspect of your power, yes? Gorgeous indeed." He couldn't help the occasional compliment towards a beautiful woman, "I won't play coy with you, I'm not sold on the idea of giving it to you; nor anyone else in your family. The belly of our world growls, undeath is upon us, hell I feel; will no doubt endanger life as we know it again. An object like the Catalyst being sent off would only feed a fire I'd rather have stamped out than raging about thoughtlessly."

A smirk touched his lips for the time being, "I am not a man of the world, if it is meant to end through natural means; then I cannot help it. Although the catalyst is far from natural. The Aether is not natural. It would take a lot of... Convincing for me to just cough up something that could- especially in the right hands - spell catastrophe. Your power as it is would frighten armies, whole nations." Yet it didn't seem to frighten him for whatever reason, his eyes now held a warmer gaze. He appeared far from unwelcoming or abrasive as he spoke; he clearly didn't mind saying anything as well.

Nia smiled, "That they are, however the catalyst serves more purpose than simply multiplying my power beyond imagination, THAT is what people do not know." She swirled a hand in the air, a small portal-like orb appearing between the two. "The aether catalyst is a source of power yes, however it is also a key, and not just any key, no no no, a key to the realm of the aether's origin. It's much like the earth we walk upon or hell, but with it's own laws and it's own people. In fact one of my family is an aether being. Lovely being he is... not very talkative though." She then had an image appear in the orb of a ruins in some mountains, "However my interest in it is to revive the aether city I currently reside in. What I do from there is still hazy." She then dispersed the image and giggled, "Now... on the matter of equivalent exchange..."

@CNHart

Peter

He couldn't tell if she was lying, and that might have been the only thing to have upset him. Belief in her cause was an easy thing to supply, he drums his fingertips along the desk's surface, "This is a delicate subject. Equivalent exchange is a silly term; we do not need coin, that we earn through means of contract." His eyes glance from her to the orb, "If what you say is true, your ideals are pure to that point; your honesty is admirable." His gaze then shifts from the orb to a general direction, just over her shoulder; those icy blues lock onto something near the corner of the room. "One might call me a fool for keeping it so close, and in such an accessible location; Quite the contrary, if something were such a powerful object why would some damned idiot keep it in such an obvious place?" He grins, "I wonder if you could sense it, took quite a bit of gold to get the wizards to put all manner of enchantments around it; even that didn't quiet the blasted thing completely." He leans forward, his stare returning to her, "You make me an offer, I will think about it in the next few moments."

@Cailfox

Nia giggled, "Oh no, I can sense it, I could sense it the moment I entered the room. However I was not the one to sense it here. That was Xifossa, one of my family. His skills are impressive, being able to find it from our home so accurately..." She took a deep breath, "I offer very little because I rarely have need to trade... however..." No, there was no way she could do such things so casually. Thinking it over was the best course of action. "I do not know how to open the gate yet, that will require myself and Xifossa to properly analyze the catalyst... I will offer two things, one of your own choice, and the second..." She wasn't fond of what she was about to speak, her wish to remain hidden from him getting in the way, but she HAD to have the catalyst. "I will offer my family's service in whatever way suits you, whether it be these 'contracts' or simple work around this establishment of ours. Our service is yours until we decipher it." Although she felt as if she was betraying her own existence her expression was stone silent. "Care to add anything?"

@CNHart

Qef let out a sigh as she got back to her feet. She had sat on the street for several minutes, letting her body readjust, and now she felt well enough to head back. She wouldn't shift, goodness no, but it wasn't like she couldn't walk. Or run, for that matter. She could run, and fast, too. But she didn't feel like making her head pound again, so the young woman simply began her long walk back to the post office.

It took longer than Qef would have liked, but she finally came across the post office, where her boss remained seated in his original position.

"Took your time, I see?" muttered the man, scribbling furiously at something.

"I have to have a break. You know I can't keep shifting like this, " panted Qef as she sunk into a chair. Her side still ached, and she felt drained.

The man let out a grunt as he pushed out his chair, got to his feet, and walked to Qef. He dropped a small bag of coins in her hand, which was her week's pay. "Go on, then, take the day off. And tomorrow, too."

Qef stared up at her boss, who was known to have sudden mood changes. Was he going mad?

"Just don't say I never did anything for you," he added with a sly wink.

Qef nodded without saying a word, a joyous flare in her eyes as she left the office. Why the sudden kindness? Was it pity? Or simply the goodness of his heart? Whatever it was, it was best to take it now before he changed his mind. Qef tucked the pouch into a pocket and decided to shift one more time, if only to rest her feet. She did so, but slowly and somewhat painfully.

In just a moment, she was high above the city, simply floating around and feeling the wind in her feathers. It was absolutely glorious, and she knew that anyone who couldn't fly on such a day was truly missing out on life.

From her height, she could even see the forest that bordered the city, in which there was fast movement. As she dipped closer, but still remained high above, she could make out two shapes diving through the foliage, one simply running, and the other seeming to flash in and out of sight. They had to be some kind of beasts, but what? Qef had never been good at naming animals.

Teftin kicked at the small pebbles on the ground as she trailed behind Evasus. She couldn't seem to help herself as a tinge of distrust marred her relationship with it. What was it that it had done? And why have it been so bad? Was Evasus going to kill her in her sleep? Then again, it had had had the chance to do so last night, and she was still alive.

The tower neared, and the female dragonkin held open the door for Evasus and Teftin to enter. The girl hung behind, wanting the being to go first. Who knew what awaited them?

@Cailfox

Peter

He chuckles lightly, she was a delight to talk to but perhaps he was getting ahead of himself. It took a few moments before he could find an answer, "The last time someone offered me anything of astronomical value, cursed me." His left index finger traces a random pattern along his desk, "I don't like the second one, it is demeaning; like I have power over you. I don't have power over any of my family here, they chose to be here and take the mark. You would be here because you made this deal." He seemed to lighten up a fair bit, "Anything I choose..." He stands up, moving around the desk and to the spot where he had locked his eyes. He rummages under stacks of paper, a few books, and finally into a drawer. In a few moments he'd retrieve the object she was searching for. It was bundled up with carefully conjoined wyvern scales, tied around that was sturdy hemp string. He returned to the desk, standing beside her, "A promise. Swear to me that you will not use this to do vile things." His hand pushes it towards Nia, "That is what I ask in return. Your service is not needed unless you give it willingly, even then; no amount of power a person possesses allows them to supersede our laws. You'd be doing menial things, which are beneath you, I would never hold a beautiful woman in such a light. I doubt the wolf would suit you." He smiles at that, sitting back down and gazing at her still, "I do not believe in petty threats. So that will be all from me."

As they approached the tower the dragonkin held the door open for them. Evasus stepped in and began walking up the stairs to the room at the top. Once they were there they were met with a voice. "You have returned world traveler, and with an outsider." Evasus nodded, "I have, I brought her to show her your proud people, I also come to discuss other matters involving the recent changes in the world. Such as the seas becoming unsettled, the recent sandstorms increasing in their devastating power, and I believe the lords of hell are soon to return..." The elder looked to him with inquisitive eyes. "I see... I presume you've come with knowledge of the stones then?" Evasus shook his head, "No. I've told you my answer of the stones already, Nacrud must find them on his own. I believe he is the salvation of your people." The elder then turned to Teftin, "What of this girl, what part does she play in all of this?" Evasus stared at the elder, "I believe she has what it takes to become the next world traveler... I sense my existence is threatened as we speak."

@Handabooo

Nia smiled once more, "I see..." She took the wyvern wrapped catalyst and unwrapped it to look at the star-like structure in her hands. "You have my word that I will not use it for vile intentions." The poor man must not have heard of a wolf in sheep's clothing. "I do believe we will meet each other again, when I do not know, but I believe it will be fairly soon. My family have also been preparing for unsettling events to come, and I fear the catalyst will have to be used for a war it was not meant to deal with." She wrapped it back into the wyvern scales and stood, a small curtsy following suit. "Until next we meet dear Peter." She quickly waved her hand around her head, hiding her horns once more and returning her hair to silver. "I do hope we meet again under good terms such as these."

@CNHart

Peter

He gave a nod and a smirk, "We won't. Most likely." As if he was aware of everything he happened to be doing. He breathed refreshingly as he sat there, soon cylindrical indentations would begin to form under the cloth upon his left shoulder; they'd squirm and grow thicker. After a few seconds these strange objects would slip out from his short sleeve, revealing themselves to be opaque, black tendrils. Smooth, harmless to look at; a strange mist bled from the surface of the tendrils. They'd shoot out with a quickness, but even then their movement was quite lax. The strange appendages swiftly overtook her and would suddenly wrap around the handle of the door to his office. "Allow me..." They snaked around it and twisted at his command; they'd also pull it open. "Have a good day, my lady, Nia." The tendrils reeled back in with equal quickness, disappearing up into his sleeve and wherever the nightmarish additions escaped to when not in use. His eyes close and he finds himself captivated by his own thoughts.

Nia leaves the room and the guild completely, her steps confident and with purpose. She finally had it, she finally had the Aether catalyst. As she stepped outside she contacted the knight and Vathiera, "Meet me outside of Grandalia to the south now. Our job is done." As she walked through the streets she gave all who passed an innocent smile, her thoughts however were full of contempt and thoughts of revenge. "I hope you sense it my dear... I'm coming for you."

(And she's gone for a while)

Nacrud who had been in the library found something of interest. A text about a ruins to the north of Grandalia, a place called Dragonspire Ruins. Walking back into the main area he looked around for the dragonkin known as Gruk. When he found him Nacrud took no time in speaking. "Dragonspire Ruins, to the north, where is it exactly?"

@CNHart

Teftin had decided that she would leave Evasus and the elder to their own devices, as they seemed to know what they were talking about, but then four words caused her to pause.

...The next world traveler.

Teftin leaned against the wall, her head spinning in confusion. No, Evasus had to be talking of someone else. She was just a wanderer, with no purpose but to fill the longing for the nomadic lifestyle in her soul. But... Could this be what she was missing? The girl shook her head. She didn't even know what a world traveler was, but she suspected if she was to become one, Evasus would have to die first.

What was coming for it? What evil was rising over the horizon? And how had she gotten herself mixed up in this in the first place? Teftin wanted answers, and immediately. "Who... What... You existence is threatened? By whom?" Teftin managed to croak something out, but her confidence was drained.

@Cailfox

The elder looked to the girl and back to Evasus. "She is to be the world traveler? She can barely stand hearing it and you expect a human to take such responsibility? Have you gone mad?" Evasus chuckled, "Perhaps I have, but my judgement has only ever been wrong once. Surely you don't believe I jest of matters such as the keeper of knowledge." The elder glared at Evasus, "I suppose you wouldn't. Tell me then, what makes you think this human girl has what it takes to become the world traveler." Evasus held up a hand, "Let me answer her question." Turning to her, he spoke. "There are many things I have not told you, and many more things I'd rather not tell you. The one who threatens my life is strong, maybe even stronger than me now. However I cannot reveal who it is while we're here. The dragonkin will attempt to defend me to the point of their own extinction."

Turning back to the elder he continued. "Teftin is a nomad, her lifestyle is already attuned to travel across whatever lands she confronts. She also seeks something more, as I have. Her self control is also well kept, she wouldn't use the knowledge to her own advantage, especially once she knows it all." He glanced to Teftin, "Besides, I knew my death would eventually catch up with me... it is time I do my final task before I am ripped from this earth." The elder stood silently for several moments before speaking. "What does she think of all this?" He looked to Teftin and waited for an answer.

@Handabooo

What did she think? What was she supposed to think? Teftin would have remained staring at the two, her mouth hanging wide open, had her brain not started up once more. She fixed her stance, took a breath, and managed to only make a squeak as a reply. Oh, great first impression. Good job. Why was Evasus choosing her like this? She was an uncultured swine!

But, then again, only being wrong once in your life could mean something. Perhaps this being was correct, and she was destined for just a bit more than wandering without meaning. And if she wasn't... Then she would become Evasus's second mistake.

Teftin attempted to speak once more, this time actually getting her larynx to work. "I don't... I don't know what this all means. I'm a nobody, but I've always known there was more out there." The girl stared at the staff in her hand, the symbol of all she was. "I... I trust Evasus. I don't know why, but I guess it's a gut feeling. Like this wasn't a mistake."

Teftin just wanted to curl into a ball, for the elder was looking intently at her. He wanted a desicive answer, so she had to give one. "To give my life for the pursuit of knowledge is a noble purpose, and I feel as though it is what I was made for."

"I will accept the responsibilities of becoming the next world traveler."

@Cailfox

The elder and Evasus looked to Teftin for a few brief moments before the elder spoke. "Very well then... I give you permission to give her the knowledge of our people." Evasus bowed, "I'm glad you approve. Now if you'd excuse us I have an apprentice to mentor." Without waiting for an answer Evasus turned and walked down the stairs waiting for Teftin at the bottom. "We must go to the Dragonspire ruins... I must meet with a dragonkin named Nacrud who must be on his way there soon. I will give you knowledge as needed along the way, however it will be preformed as a ritual so that your mind doesn't explode from the strain it puts you through otherwise."

@Handabooo

    Alex searched his mind for other beasts he would like to meet. Thinking back to fierce creature he had heard of in his journeys. Looking down at the big cat he was riding on, it gave him an idea.

    "Are chimera's real creature? Do they really exist?" Alex said looking up to Kodai. Alex was excited for the first time in a while. This would be a cool trip if he got to see them, left alone befriend them.

@Cailfox

Teftin's eyes widened in alarm at the mention of her mind exploding. Could that actually happen? Or was Evasus just joking with her? Then again, Evasus didn't seem like the joking type. So, it was safer to assume that he was telling the truth.

The girl walked with Evasus as they made their way toward... Wherever these ruins were. "Is this Nacrud a traveler like you? Or or does he live here along with all the other dragonkin?"

@Cailfox

Kodai glanced over to him, "More than likely yes. I have not encountered one myself, but if leviathans are still around I'm sure there's a good chance that chimera's are still on the earth as well." They rode for a few more moments before approaching a beach in which the two beasts slowed down to a stop for Kodai and Alex to get off. "Here we are... it's time we summon him." Making a few barks, yips, hisses and meows to the two beasts they dashed off, "They'll return soon, I simply told them that they may go hunt for their food now." Wasting no time Kodai walked into the waters till the waves lapped at his waist and held one hand in the water, waiting.

After what seemed to be several minutes a large circle of bubbling water appeared several feet in front of him. The froth and bubbles became a violent torrent until suddenly a large snake-like creature burst from the water's surface, towering well above the tress in the forest and even the lighthouse half a mile down the shore. The serpent spoke to Kodai, but Alex could hear the mighty beast as well. "Greetings Kodai, what brings you back to the sea?" Kodai looked up to the beast and spoke, "A simple visit dear leviathan. I also came to show this boy, Alex, that magnificent creatures such as yourself still walk the earth. How have you been?" The leviathan looked down to the two, his words toward Kodai were as if they were old friends, "I thank you for the visit. I have been doing well, the other leviathans have been behaving accordingly." Turning to Alex it spoke once more, "Greetings young one. You need not fear me so long as Kodai trusts you. I am bound by my word that an acquaintance of his, is an acquaintance of mine."

@IMthatGUY

Evasus continued to walk in the direction out of the village. "He is both. He was once a monk of this village and one of their best, if not he was the best. One day however, him and six others were sent on a journey that they would be on to this day to find the primal stones. Ancient relics created by the dragon aspects of the past meant to be used as a weapon against further invasions of hell. However the first month they left, all but him were returned dead. He never told the village what had happened, but he said that one of his allies, his mate, said something before her death. In his anger and anguish for the lack of knowledge the other monks kept from him he swore an oath that he alone would find the primal stones. He took one scale from each of his fallen comrades and crafted them into the six earrings he now wears in memory of their short glory. That was almost twelve years ago and he has yet to find the first of the stones. I believe he is soon to find it however, and that is where we shall join his journey and continue our own." By the time he had said all this they were outside of the rocks signifying the village border.

"His mate told him 'Bakar tharna' before she died. In human words it would translate closely to murder and betrayal. She was not wrong, for the stone they attempted to retrieve is guarded by a hellish ward created by the corrupted dragon aspect Neltharion, the earth warder. His primal stone is protected by such volatile spells because the corrupted Neltharion does not wish the last bit of his purity to be in the hands of any hero. He is one of six lords of hell, and I believe he has gained enough strength to reopen the gates of hell soon." He stopped and turned to Teftin, "I know this is difficult to take in, so much knowledge in but a single day, but it will be necessary for the times ahead. Then there's the matter of my life on the line... the aether queen seeks my death, along with her family because I stopped her three thousand years ago from obtaining the aether catalyst, one of the most volatile relics I know of. If she has it she could very easily kill me... if she finds me." He then returned to walking. "That is why we're headed to the desert ruins where we first met, I am going to uncover them and activate the portal to the dragonspire ruins for us to travel quickly."

Gruck grunts, it wasn't often one of his own kind talked to him so freely; most he met during his contract assignments simply gave him a cold look. That was okay for him, he saw Peter and his brother as his only family, the tribe he was satisfied with. "North." He repeats, he had a bit of a tough time articulating, "Long ways." He informs him, "Peter knows." The dragonkin adds on. "Trust him. Not bad." One might consider him a barbaric brute, but in truth more was going through the head than some may first realize. A few moments after what Gruck considered a conversation transpired, a young lad with a buzzed head and thin goatee calls to Nacrud, "You there. Nacrud? Peter would like to speak to you, it's urgent. Orion, go find Kodai, probably visiting one of his friends." Orion grunts in understanding and annoyance, "When the majority is present he says he has... Very dire news." With that the young lad retreats back up the stairs from whence he came, most likely into Peter's office. Orion stands up, heading out the door with a mission to find his comrade. Peter sat their, a rather casual look after the ongoings of today. He needn't offer Armaund doubt of the task he gave him, he remained at his desk; a forward, unshakable stare. "They'll understand what I'm trying to do. I'm certain about that. When they happen to is their decision." His right hand clenches around his fist, "I've been after him for such a long time. Now I finally have the chance to rid this world of him and his blood."

@NViouz_DVationz

Nacrud nodded to Gruck only to be spoken to by another one of the Ebonwolf guild. Turning to Gruck he said his thanks before going upstairs and eventually finding the room where Peter was sitting. "You called for me Peter?" It wasn't often Nacrud had been called for, and he had more important business at hand. The location of one of the primal stones was in the text of that dragonkin shaman.

"Yes. Do you know of the World Traveler?" He slouches forward, his hands on one another while upon the desk, "Don't know how attuned you are with your surroundings, but if you have no look of surprise; you didn't notice the unmistakable presence that was here only minutes ago." His smile never waned as he spoke, even if he was about to share some urgent, possibly upsetting news. "I'm after someone who is after the World Traveler; he has escaped me once before, retreated behind his powerful family. Perhaps you know of the terrible being of which I speak... The Knight." He says the name with a bit of venom to his tone, likely a longstanding hatred. "His kin was just here to grab an object known as the aether catalyst. Naive one she was." He remembered what he told Armaund, but he figured this part was best served just for Nacrud, "Now, let me have what you would like to give; then we will wait for the others. Those I trust. Our meeting... The world changing as it is. Such is not a coincidence." Peter often wondered if he sounded wise, even when decisions he took seemed rather dangerous.

    As the animals ran out into the forest, Alex looked around the beach. He had made it in a quarter of the time by horse. It was amazing. The Beastmaster silently and swiftly stepped into the water. The boy wondered if he should join, but remained where he was in fear of what was coming. Fisherman spoke of their frightening encounters with these creature, and although Alex had seen the Beast master tame smaller animals, he was still skeptical.

     After a few minutes of hand raising and Alex still wondering if this guy was crazy or not, the water bubbled up. More and more came, followed by a huge serpent. It was huge, and how a simple human could befriend a monster like this. Once surfacing, it spoke and yet, Alex could understand as well. He looked up to the creature in shock.

    After introduction were given and such, the serpent explain that if Alex was with Kodai, they were together as well. 'How could I have not noticed these things any sooner?' Alex thought to himself. 'And they speak our language...' Alex was thankful to meet one now under the protection of the masked man than putnin the wild. The black haired boy put on the most respectful tone he could. "It is an honour to meet you, sir. Not many can say they came in contact with a Leviathan." Alex slowly bowed in front of the serpent. Alex wondered hoew these two came to be, he would ask later though. Looking back to the serpent, he waited on the Beastmaster to explain why they had come.

A startled caw emanated from Qef as a scene unfolded beneath her. She had followed the two fast shapes to the sea, where they had stopped by the shore. As she dipped even closer, two people climbs off the backs of the creatures, who then scuttled off. She considered following them, but her curiosity kept her watching the humans.

It was then that a huge beast burst from the sea foam and simply sat before the human that had seemingly called it forth. I must be more tired than I thought. Qef shook her head and looked again, but the beast was still there, only now it was conversing with the humans. The more the bird looked at it, the more she wanted to know about it. What the hell was going on?

Qef circled to the back of the beast, letting out the occasional squawk as she inspected it. She almost wondered what it would do if she pecked it, but she soon chased that idea out of her mind. There was already a present danger, and that was that the beast could be craving an afternoon snack. And that snack could be her. At that, she fluttered a bit higher, but kept her beady eyes on it, admiring its scales that shone in the sun. As a raven, she couldn't help but be attracted to shiny objects.

Evasus was right, for this was a lot of information. Teftin did her best to process it all, but that didn't go as well as she had hoped. The hot sun beating down on her didn't help, but that was something she had grown accustomed to. After all, she had never really left the desert before. When Evasus had talked of snowy mountains, she couldn't even picture snow
 which she had only ever heard rumors about.

Evasus and Teftin made their way back to where they had met, the ruins of some fallen city. She could see the tower she had climbed on top of, and in the distance was the small village they had taken refuge in. "Here we are," breathed Teftin, happy to be back in the uninhabited parts of the desert. "Where is this portal you spoke of?"
