Fantasy Tales of Arcadia

Warren turned around, scowling. The engineer was getting on her nerves, keeping her from leaving with her logic. Her eyes flicked to the anxious crowd, most watching their encounter through side-eyes. Thin vines crept down her shoulders, a sign of nervousness. She looked towards the barmaid, then to the engineer once more. Humans were such pesky things.

"And what makes you any different, miss?" Warren asked, eyeing the notebook half falling out of the woman's pocket.

Warren hadn't the slightest idea why everyone was so interested in her, mortals and other alike. The engineer, the men at the bar, the innkeeper. She knew that their eyes, minds or physical, were watching her every move. She had to be more careful than before if she wanted to live her life the way she wanted to, and not by some instruction of another. This conflict raged inside the plant girl, as she could not understand why mortals were so selfish. Wether it be for knowledge, power, or just plain enjoyment. They exploited things like Warren for their own benefit. And it pissed her off to no end.

@Latorrex @Kasuu

"Hmm..." Barretta smiled. She took out her decanter once more and spoke "Drizzle." refreshing the plant woman once more. "That's one reason.... Hehe" she then stowed her decanter away once more. "I'm offering you a deal where you can benefit." Barretta pointed outside, becoming more serious "Out there's a dessert and water is a rare commodity out there. I was out here on expedition to attend to my studies and just happened to find something of..." leaning in to whisper "Intrinsic scholastic value." She took out her journal and opened it to the section she had dedicated to the plant lady. "Here is what I've written about you, and only you; being careful to catalog the details I could observe." Barretta closed the book and attached it to her belt by the chain link on the binding. "I may be helping you out of my own benefit, but unlike everyone else here, I'm treating you so you can benefit as well. At least with me you won't end up in a cage." Eyeing the cage and the drunken man on the ground. "If you don't want to I understand. Good luck lasting out there in that dessert without any water." Getting her things together she eyed the Barmaid, giving a glimmer of hope and a smile of genuine glee. "My offer still stands, I have a room across the way at the Researcher's guild. Go down the way and turn right. Ask for a Ms. Handchamber from the cryer at the front. I'll be gone at sunrise." She eyed the two on her way out, pulling her hood over her head. "Good Day."

Emyr
Tavern

"Thank you, thank you!" laughed Emyr over the sound of applause and shrill whistles. A good many of the songs he'd played tonight were favorites back in Gaia last he checked, and in the Daelam Desert too, it seemed. Rolling his shoulders, Emyr took a moment to look around the room, having been so engrossed in playing that he hardly seemed to take notice of anything that took place outside of his little dais. He didn't even realize how hungry he'd become until he smelled dinner cooking in the far kitchen. He could use a bath too, but for now he'd worry about collecting his fee, paying his rent, and winding down for the evening.

After one last bow, Emyr sauntered over to the bar -- his fiddle's case in one hand and his jar of tips in the other -- only to find that the innkeeper was not behind it for once. Likely, he  was away helping the other workers in the kitchen. No matter, this elf had plenty of time to kick back and wait. And what better way to unwind after a rigorous show than by conversing with the staff? He was being paid to perform for the next week, after all,  so it was at least worth trying to get acquainted with the other employees. As luck would have it, one of the workers was loitering by the door, chit-chatting with the plant-girl from before, now un-caged, and another dark-skinned patron, a Shard mage by the look of her equipment. He could not quite remember her name -- Melanie or Malorie or something like that -- but the other girls spoke highly of her, and she did not look like the type to turn down a friendly conversation.

"If I may ask, darling, but is there any Grandalian Brandy left? I was hoping to have a glass before the night is over." Emyr asked airily. As he looked over to acknowledge the other ladies, however, he began to wonder if he had picked the right time to swoop in with his charm. The plant girl had a haughty glower plastered on her face, with emphasis on the "haughty". The Shard mage was looking rather confident,  however,  like a fisherman who'd just reeled in a big, fat one. The serving girl looked downright shell-shocked.

"I'm not interrupting something important, am I?"

Barretta took note of the patron: Elf, Young looking, gruff voice, the elf was working as a bard and was probably much older than her. Her rune charms on her necklace were resinating stronger than normal... He has to be a magical user; Probably figures I am as well. Within experience, he probably thinks me a common Shard Mage. She noted that. Wouldn't blame him, Shard Magic and Artificy are quite similar however majorly nuanced they be. Soon she started delving into the reason why he would try to talk with them, seeing her circumstance with the plant woman. Could he be a handler? A thug? Gods forbid... a gigolo? Barretta couldn't stand those guys... annoying.

@Lorkhan

    'And away goes the dragonkin.' Sebastian thinks. The tension in the tavern had subsided, though there was still one abnormal creature left. She was surrounded by multiple people, certainly the center of attention. Warren, if he had over heard correctly, didn't seem to be enjoying it. Sebastian studied the characters around her. 'A musician, a barmaid, and a scholar.'  He determined that none of them were hostile, so he went back to thinking of his job at hand.

    Sebastian felt it was probably not a good time to talk Warren about his job. Space was probably best for now, and space was Sebastian's speciality. He decided to stay hidden from the Warren until he was either caught or she needed protecting.

    With nothing to do until they left the tavern, Sebastian stood up and flipped another bit of coin onto the counter, nodding at the tavern owner. 'I need some sleep...' He thought as he walked towards the door.

    "Excuse me, my friends..."  Sebastian said in his low and rough voice as he passed through the group by the door. He stepped out into the desert heat, though it wouldn't be heat for long. Darkness was approaching quickly, and with darkness came the cold.

    Quickly, Sebastian scanned the area for a good vantage point, spotting a tree and climbing it with ease. Cloak on and mask covering his face, he layed out in the tree waiting for the plant girl to leave, most likely with a friend or two, and not by her choice. Until then, he simply squirmed in the tree a bit and closed his eyelids for a quick nap.

Melody seemed to sigh as the man's voice seemed to flutter over the crowd.

She soon began to bow to Baretta and then rose her hand to Warren- rushing

herself now as her job applied a bit of salt to her wound- the wound of her lack

of an education. She offered a sorry smile to her.

"A-Aye, I will keep it in mind, thank you."

Soon, she began to scamper off, her fingertips squeezing onto the basket she

held. A shiver trailed down her spine as she approached the bar, nodding to the

elf as she passed by, letting him know she would be right with him. She squeezed

by with little effort and made sure to keep herself small as possible to not cause

any conflict elsewhere. She stepped up as she took a deep breath once in the

safety of the bustling kitchen, several people wandering about to get the stews

ready. The rush of not having to be in this stuffy kitchen was appealing, nor in

the beds of the men who had paid for her to be there. She once again felt the

unease trickle down her frame, causing a faint blush to arise on her freckled

cheeks due to discomfort she felt. Soon she slapped her thighs to get hold of herself,

and the other two women in the kitchen simply rose their eyes at the young woman.

She gulped as she nodded to them politely and they offered her a smile in return.

Bracing herself for another long night, she stepped back out to the counters and to

the elf that had beckoned for one of the servers that evening.

"I apologize for the wait, sir!"

She chimed lightly, her voice being similar to her name- melodic and charming. She

spoke in a very quiet tone though she made it loud enough so the two of them could

speak without much interruption by others.

"What was it that you wanted this evening..?"

It was as though she was in a dream. As thr sand whirled about, Teftin closed her eyes, letting that feeling of magic soak in through her pores. It was rejuvenating and mysterious, and still she felt no fear. This Evasus was to be trusted, and this was only strengthened as it began to speak and tell her of itself. It was incredible, that a being could be this way, forever view history, and never age itself. What could it have gone through? What sorrows had Evasus seen?

"You are right. My people are suffocating in these sands, and yet refuse to admit it." Teftin looked down, almost ashamed, and crossed her legs as she sat on the floor opposite Evasus. "Perhaps that is why I run this far, to hide from that truth." The girl girl had never thought of that before, but deep down, she knew she was avoiding her own people's failure. "I love the sands, but my bones ache for more." Her coal eyes rose to meet the still mask of Evasus. "Have you ever felt that before? What does it mean?"

Warren, though still suspicious, seemed to be convinced by the shard-mage. She thought of either side of the equation for a minute, before remembering the delight of water in and on her body. She whirled around, shouting for the Baretta to stop.

"I'll stay with you. On one condition."

From the past, Warren knew that most humans could not refuse a deal. Their emotions were too much for them to contain.

There was another accompanying the woman, an elf by the looks of it. Elves were generally nice to Warren, seeing as they respected Gaia, but she wondered what one was doing all the way out here. Then again, Warren was wondering how she got all the way out here in this desert civilation, hardly big enough to call it a town. She could hardly remember what happened.

@Latorrex @Lorkhan @IMthatGUY

Evasus was silent. It knew what that felt like, or at least it once did. It was long ago before Evasus had a name, before Evasus had a physical form. "I have felt that lust for more... I still do." The being sent images into her mind, times of great influence to races long forgotten such as the dragons spoken of in legends. Mighty scaled beasts that ruled the skies, the laws of the world even. Images of ancient humans when they were still a largely nomadic race, interacting and trading with species they now see as threats. "Do not let a lust for knowledge and experience consume you though, for that is how one falls into despair." Brief images of a kitsune flashed into her mind, wandering the lands of Arcadia and meeting beings of all kinds. An image of the kittsune attempting to take a body and then being thrust out and changing. The image faded there however and Evasus spoke once more. "Perhaps there is a way for you to preserve and revive the nomadic ways without falling to the corruption of the lust of knowledge."

@Handabooo

Teftin's gaze fixed itself on Evasus as the cogs of her mind began to turn. The kitsune's wisdom was truly unrivaled, as were its abilities. As images of times long past began to fill her mind, Teftin reveled in the crispness of the memories, as well as the emotions that poured from them. Were they Evasus's own memories? Its own self? It was difficult to tell. But as the images faded, new ones that belonged to Teftin took their places, of her family and old tribe, and how dear they had been to her. And now, she was likely the only being that carried their memory. And when she passed on, everything about them would be forgotten.

As the wind howled outside, Teftin's eyes bored deep into those of Evasus. "You cannot expect me to resurface a time long gone. You hold many memories; can you not share them with the world? Show them what they have forgotten!" Teftin's speech became slurred and confused, as if she wasn't sure what she was saying. Her heart pounded as these thoughts filled her mind. "Too many things have been lost to the ages. I cannot restore them. I know nothing of the world."

@Cailfox

"Regrettably humans have grown blind to the old ways as they have evolved. Only another human can influence their hearts now." It then looked to the ceiling as the storm momentarily shook the building, "You may not know the world as I do, but you are a nomad, one who wanders the earth and thrives on what it has to offer. There are many beings like you, the last of their kin who believe in their ancestors and their ways. I can only watch however, and keep those away from the temptation of infinite knowledge. If you wish I will aid you in a quest to revive the nomadic ways, however it will be your duty to do so. I may only offer wisdom, and knowledge you are ready to receive." It drew a line between itself and Teftin, "If your life is in danger, I am forbidden to help, if you must solve a puzzle, I am forbidden to solve it for you, if you seek knowledge no human, or any being, should recover... I will stop you." Those last four words were said with poisonous intent. Evasus would not allow anyone to do what it had done. "That is my agreement." As he finished all was silent but the whistling of the storm outside.

 (I get of of work at 4 and have to ride my bike.)

"Well that's good to hear" Barretta notioned. "I'll heed your request." She eyed the elf that had just entered the conversation and touched his chest playfully with her index finger. "Please be a charmer and let that barmaid know that she'll be receiving a courier with a package and directions later this evening ." She gave them both a thumbs up and headed out the door, making a beeline for the Researcher's Guild. I have just the solution to her predicament, she thought feeling giddy. Through the town she, winded through the streets of the desert town as the sun started to set within the dusk and the stars to blanket the coming horizon. The student paced past the stalls and through the crowds bustling to shelter as she planned her next moves. Finally arriving to the Researcher's Guild, Barretta contacted the Clerk at the front with her credentials. "I shall be having some company for the evening, so I would like a meal prepared." She flipped some coin, 4 silvers. "Please something hot." Playing with the young lad. "Your patronage is gracious." He responded behind a face flushed red.

The Artificer ran up to her room and began to search the belongings that were packed within the Bureau that the guild provided to go through certain house requisition to find a sizeable package. There must be... "Ahah! gotchya ya blighter." She exclaimed as she found a crudely crafted box of a few inches in height and width. Now to make that writ stone. She scoured her room and belongings for suitable materials to create one of her master's curios that she herself had used among her first days as an apprentice. For the first stone, The artificer procured a small Shale rock, approximately the size of a copper coin, and laid it among the kit she used for her artifacies. Taking two enchanted carving tools: infused with fire and water primers in each hand, Barretta channeled her magic through each to carve out the shape of an eye with a five connecting runes: Sound, Mind, Body, Hand, Connect.

Within the carvings, Barretta looked to her notes so that she wouldn't have to start from scratch. Meticulously browsing her vials of primer reagents, She needed three with Primal properties of Lightning, Earth and Air, One with Ethereal property of light, and One with the Life property of Flesh. Taking dust of Cobalt, She inlaid the the runes of mind, hand, and connect with the Primal property of Lightning to create the neccesary impulse to make the connection to the person. Quarts dust was placed within the hand rune to ground the connection to the body, creating a stable link. In the place of the sound rune, Copper pearl was spread evenly amongst the carving. This would allow sounds to be able to be input within the stone. Crude lamp oil was boiled in a laquer mixture of the artificer's blood and lighning bug resin, Flesh and Light. The Stone was tempered in heat to allow the metals to setal within the inlays as the laquer boiled. After the tempering, the laquer had to be poured upon the face of the stone and evenly spread. Through a loop, a tread was spun through to be hung up. As the Stone hangs, allowing an even spread, The laquer must be baked with a constant flame. Barretta achieved it by using what potent magic that she had.

The Stone was then completed, Having put in a couple hours work to get the right conditions. All I need to do was charge the runes with magic and test it out. Barretta sat, Concentrating magical energies within the stone, The runes inlaid within the ochre glossed stone began to glow faintly as the appropriate magics were intermingling within the stone. Perfect... didn't crack. She brought the stone to her forehead and, grabbing an inkwell, quill, and paper, thought, This is a writing on paper. And with a somatic motion, her hand moved on it's own "This is a writing on paper." "Excellent. Now for the reading portion." looking to the paper she had just written, a voice in her head, mirroring hers, read "This is a writing on paper."

Once the tests were complete, Barretta carefully placed the stone within the box and called for a Guild courier. "Take this to a certain blonde headed barmaid at the Dragon's roost. Tell her that I want to discuss the contents of the package in person." Giving the lad a tip before sending him on his way.

    The loud creaking of the tavern door awoke Sebastian. Yawning and sitting up on the tree branch, he peered below him to see the scholar leave the bar, alone. 'Im sure she'll be back...' He thought to himself. They wanted the same thing, Warren. But for what reasons... Not seeing anyone else leaving the tavern, he closed his eyes and went back to sleep.

A surge of new strength filled the chest of Teftin as the words of the kitsune left its mouth. It was right; only a human, a nomad of her own race, would be able to turn the hearts of men. And if Evasus helped her... Anything could become possible. Teftin placed a hand over her heart, then pressed it onto the line Evasus had drawn. "A pledge, from nomad to nomad... I would be honored to travel in your presence."

Teftin unhooked the cloth that covered the lower portion of her face, a symbol of trust in the desert. "If such an accomplishment is to be achieved... I will need to restock. And where do we start? Where do we begin?" Excitement began to flow through Teftin's veins as ideals of adventure and honor began to form.

@Cailfox

Warren stepped outside for the first time in a week, the setting sun warming her cold exterior and making her feel better. Plants needed water and sunlight, and the little amount of light she got coupes up in the cage was barely enough to keep her functioning. But the sun delighted Warren, and she needed to find a place to sit and heal, so she walked over to a tree and plopped herself down. She decided that the researcher could wait, and with that, she closed her eyes. The plant seemed to be meditating, though she was anything but calm in her mind.

Her thoughts began with the warmth of the sun on her bare skin, the joy of escaping and being offered safety. Eventually, they wandered towards the plant life around her, the couple trees and cacti that were thriving in their environment. She felt their roots in the earth, their branches in the sky, and their flowers in the wind. The girl sighed in delight, before sensing a presence in the tree above her. A burden on the tree that was not apart of itself. Warren could not tell what it was. She opened her eyes and looked up st the tree, scanning the branches for a solid minute, before closing them and resting against the bark again.

@IMthatGUY @Latorrex

    Yet again, the taverns heavy door creaked open, waking the sleeping huntsmen. Yet this time he had a reason to wake. Warren stepped out of her prison and into the freedom. As soon as the sunlight hit her skin, her whole demeanor perked up. 'She must really be just like a plant.' He thought.

    After indulging in the sun for a minute, she started towards Sebastian's tree. Instinctively, Sebastian camouflaged himself, (one of his abilities) fearing he had been seen. But the plant girl simply sat down, at his tree out of all of them. The invisible man relaxed, realizing he hadn't been spotted.

    'That was close.' He thought as he let out a sigh, trying his best to stay still for his camouflage to last. Deciding he would probably be safe where he was, he looked down at Warren.

    Suddenly she looked around herself, and looked up, directly into his eyes. His heart skipped a beat, 'How can she sense me?!' He was invisible, and not many have been able to detect him in this state. But as soon as she looked up at him, she looked forward again, and went back to sunbathing.

    'This stealthy approach is going to be harder than he thought.' Standing up, his camouflage was erupted. As silently as possible, the masked man hopped to an adjacent tree, putting distance between them. Wanting to climb higher, he took out his dagger, digging it into the tree to help climb where the branches were sparse. Finding a strong enough branch, Sebastian sat beside the tree Warren was sitting at. Thinking to himself, he occupied his mind as to how he could get closer to Warren without her being suspicious.

@Galaxy's Silver Lining

Warren continued feeling the life around her, keeping the back of her mind on the object above her. When it moved to the next tree over, she whipped her head towards that direction, expecting to see something, anything, but was greeted with the silence of the setting sun. Frustrated, the plant girl stood up, thrusting out her hands towards the tree adjacent to the one she was under. She twirled her fingers and muttered something under her breath, attempting to trap the object with rapid-growing branches of the tree.

@IMthatGUY

    Preoccupied with his thoughts, Sebastian didn't see the incoming plant attack. A vine wrapped around his leg, pulling him down. Instinctively, he went for his dagger. Pulling it out, he realized the hostile was a plant.

    The sharp dagger cut through the vine with ease, but it had pulled to far, he began to fall from the tree, from rather high up. Managing to get close enough to the tree to stick his dagger into the bark, it stop his free-falling. Hanging on nothing but his knife, Sebastian kicked off the tree and landed on an another nearby tree.

    He looked down at Warren from atop his branch. They were probaly 20 feet from each other. She definetly saw him this time. She had her hand out, controlling the vines that had caused him to fall. "Interesting power you have there, my friend." Sebastian spoke in his normal low and rough voice, his tone neutral. Out the corner of his eye, the vines were still moving. Slowly the dagger went back in its sheathe, and Sebastian's hands raised in the air as a sign of friendliness. "I am not an enemy."

@Cailfox

Evasus nodded in acceptance of her pledge. "So be it. We shall revive nomadic ways. Let us rest while the storm passes. Then I shall lead us to a tribe of dragonkin I often talk to. You can start there."

Teftin nodded, her eyes suddenly beginning to feel drowsy. There was no reason why she couldn't sleep as the sandstorm shifted the sands outside. It seemed likely that Evasus wouldn't sleep, so the girl was silent as she began to gather her things once more, setting out a blanket and taking out her canteen. Standing up, she walked to the small pool of clear water that had had formed in the corner blank filled it up before taking a swig herself. It was sweet and much cleaner than any water she had had recently, and seemed to do wonders.

Teftin then rested on her blanket, sprawled out on the ground as her eyes began to close. She was suddenly aware of just how far she had traveled that day and so many days before, and that her legs were thanking her for such a rest. Her mind seemed to close for only a moment before her eyes opened once more and the howling had stopped. She sat up, rubbing her eyes, wondering how long it had been before beginning to put her things away.

@Cailfox

Warren scrunched her face, letting go of control on the tree. The vines instantly fell back to their original spaces, and the tree seemed unscathed. Other than the dagger marks that the man had left in the tree.

"Another mortal. What offers do you have for me? Why am I such an interest to you people?" She asked, evidently frustrated in this turn of events.

@IMthatGUY

    'Doesn't like being stalked, what a surprise...' He thought to himself. Sebastian was standing on a branch, he simply sat down and folded his arms. He needed to become her friend.

    "Well, to be honest miss. Technically you sat at my tree..." The masked man said in a humorous way. He dropped down to the ground, and slowly out stretched his hand.

    "Hello, my name is Sebastian. Nice to make your acquaintance."

"I see you have woken from your peaceful rest. The storm died down while you slept, so I took the time to provide us with a way out, and food for yourself." A bundle that smelled of herbs and cooked meat was sitting off to the side. The door, previously a stone slab, was open and a path was dug out from the piles of sand, a task that would have taken days for any other being. Evasus then walked toward the door, "I shall be outside when you are ready to depart for the dragonkin settlement."

Melody stood at the counter for a short while, her head running with the

various things that Ms. Handchamber might want and the reason she's

beckoning for her to enter the researches guild of all places. She went

about her way as the few hours went on before the man had come in

with the box in hand. She had looked up with the damp rag in hand,

wiping down the counters from the sand buildup as well as beer spills.

Her hands moved along the surface, diligently cleaning them as well as

serving the patrons though the the nights, though when the courier came

with the small parcel and Barretta's personal note regarding it, she did

feel slightly relieved at the woman's consistency. She had looked over

the surface of the simply looking box, not sure if she had wanted to open

it or simply wait for the appropriate time to do so. So she instead kept it

locked within her palms and had one of the other ladies watch after the

counter for the seemingly short amount of time she would be gone for

the evening.

With the box in hand, she let her fingertips move along the grains lightly,

keeping her touch light. It was a bit dark though luckily some of the city

workers had set the makeshift burners with the wood to sustain them for

the short amount of time, though just in case, Melody had grabbed one

of the tavern oil lanterns. She knew she would have to pay back for the

oil used, but she didn't frequently go out as much as some of the other

ladies, so she knew she wouldn't be barraged too harshly by the Innkeeper.

She would have walked past with the lantern illuminating her face vaguely

though she was about to see to about her feet. She moved along carefully,

keeping herself steady as she walked. As five minutes passed, she was

eventually in front of the guild house and looked up at the rather intimidating

building.

"I really don't belong here.."

She murmured to herself quietly, before eventually making her way into the

door, pushing it open with her taken palm, still slightly gripping onto the box

in her hand. Peering inside, she internally thought it looks different than she

would have expected it too.

"I-I am here to visit Ms. Handchamber, please?"

@Latorrex

"Meal you requested is ready miss, Chef's Special." The man bringing it in was a rotund fellow with a chef's apron. "Oooh..." She could smell the fusion of flavors twist within the air. "It Smells delicious." Tipping the service, the Rotund man responded. "Oh and by the way you have a visitor."

"Eep." she had not expected someone to come so soon yet, currently now in her evening clothes. "Well, I guess send her up, I have to get the place ready though." Nodding, the guild server closed the door behind him leaving the fresh meal and the guest to her business. Barretta looked around the room seeing that things needed to be cleaned up from the various utensils for artificy to a couple bottles on the floor. Maybe I should have cleaned instead of getting comfortable, letting out a small snicker. Focus. The bottles were the first ones that had to go, Being the main eyesores. Taking them one by one, she used a Vibro rune to  turn the bottles into dust and fill up another. At least it'll look like an ingredient.

The artificer then set up the food that she requested. It was a roast beast native to the desert, coated in spices and a syrup local to the area. "First impressions are fairly important... "but I have no time to change." Noticing that she was wearing little clothing to begin with, wearing a sort of short length baggy pants with a cut top.

"It'll have to do."
