A lot of things were confusing and different, but Ally never was. She would always be Grace’s constant. She knew that. She smiled at her sister’s whisper and nodded big. It was enough to make Hayden wonder what they were talking about. “Count to three,” she confirmed as quietly as possible. With was what they always did. “One.” They always pounced once they said three. “Two.” If Kaiden heard them, they wouldn’t know what was coming. Besides, she loved doing this to their dad. It sounded fun to do to him too. “Three!” She immediately barreled into Kai knowing that her sister was coming too. Hayden’s eyes widened, and his hand moved up to his mouth, but he was stifling a laugh instead of doing anything about it. ​

Allison heard her sister’s confirmation and tried to hold back the giggle of excitement. “Right. To three.” She said softly, counting down with her sister. Kaiden looked at the two, watching them and wondering just what was going on when the word ‘three’ rang in the air. Allison, in sync with her sister, barreled into Kaiden who fell backwards, laughing as the two little girls dog piled him. He wrapped his arms around them and grinned, both hands going to tickle their sides. “You toppled the little shark. Now he’s going to eat you up!” Kaiden said, both arms holding one of them and his fingers trying to tickle what he could. Allison immediately started giggling and laughing, while squirming at the fingers tickling her sides. Josh chuckled, seeing the sight before him. It was adorable and he loved this for his son.​

The giggles started immediately. Grace laughed so hard when Kai tickled her. She was so ticklish. Her dad knew all the right spots to hit, and without even knowing that, so did Kai. She assumed it must have just been a fatherly figure angel type thing. Her face started to hurt from laughing so much as she screeched and squealed where they were. The front door opened again, but she was having far too much fun to even look. She vaguely heard the sounds of someone walking closer. Hayden smiled at Ezekiel as he watched this display with both raised brows. He stood there for a moment and then decided that this was not something he wanted to interrupt, so instead he just watched. A little smile played at the edges of his lips as he observed his partner playing with these little girls. He had so many questions, but they could wait.​

The moment he heard Grace’s hard laughter and Allison was laughing just as hard, made Kai’s heart happy, and his smile was so big it hurt. Giggling and squealing as Kai managed to tickle the spots that really got her. Allison barely heard the door open and shut. Kai was too busy making ‘chomping’ noises as he continued to tickle the two girls. “Okay I think this shark is getting full.” Kaiden said, breathlessly as he laughed. His fingers stilled as he sat up, holding the girls in his arms. Kai looked up to see Ezekiel standing there and smiled. “Hello my love. Girls. I want you to meet a wonderful man. Allison, Grace. This is Ezekiel and love, this is Allison and Grace.” Kai said, holding the two with that same big smile on his face. Josh had seen Ezekiel come in and he was curious as to his reaction. Allison caught her breath and looked at him. “Hello.” Ally said with a small smile.​

Grace was still giggling as Kai stopped, wishing it would last longer while also needing to catch her breath. She fell back so that she was still standing but heavily leaning against Kai as she turned around to see who Kai was talking to. This new person felt so tall even though he wasn’t really any different than anyone else. She grabbed her sister’s hand and the sleeve of Kai’s shirt as she stared at this new man who smiled lightly at them. It didn’t seem to fit his face. His cheeks had these big scars that made him look harder. Ezekiel crouched down, intrigue written all over his face. “Hello.” His lips flicked up with a question he would ask later. Hayden, however, felt the need to answer some of it. “Kai and Theo found them out on patrol.” Ezekiel looked at him. “Alone.” Ezekiel nodded and looked back. Naturally they would bring them here to Hayden. People did that on the rare occasion that they found children or had children who lost their parents. Hayden was a good in between. Somehow he was both a scientist and a child whisperer. “So you are the reason Kaiden didn’t finish his patrol.”​

Kaiden felt Grace take his shirt sleeve in one hand and he used his hand to rub her side gently. Allison felt her sister take her hand and yet her eyes never left Ezekiel’s face. Those scars on his cheeks made him look hard and stern. Her eyes moved to Kaiden curiously and then to Ezekiel again. “He saved us. From the monsters. He and Theo.” Allison said, not knowing what the word patrol meant. She didn’t let go of her sister’s hand but she wanted to see this new man. He was at their level now after he’d crouched down. Allison moved from Kai’s side and looked at Grace. She was torn, because she didn’t want to leave her sister but her curiosity was growing. Kaiden looked at them and smiled warmly. “It’s okay girls. He doesn’t bite I promise.” He said softly, yet he knew he had to talk to Ezekiel about them. He didn’t want to leave them with Hayden even though he knew his dad was good with kids. He wanted to care for these two.​

Grace was too wary. When Ally moved forward, Grace did not. She was afraid of new, and though she was afraid for Ally too, she knew that Allison was interested. Kai trusted this new man, so maybe she should trust him too? She loosened her grip on her sister as a quiet permission for her to leave if she wanted. She would stay with her angel though. He was safe. Ezekiel was intrigued. “Those monsters are not fun. I call them demons. Demons or monsters. Both are true.” Ezekiel had not worked with children pretty much ever. His parents may have had many children, but he was not part of raising them. He did not play with them. He worked to keep them safe. He was not very good with them, though that was because he never tried. “Theo and Kaiden are very good at keeping us safe from them.”​

Allison tilted her head, listening to him. She felt Grace loosen her grip on her hand and Ally pulled her hand free. “Demons?” She asked softly, walking over towards Ezekiel. She was cautious but Kaiden trusted him so she thought she could too. Ally stopped in front of him. Her eyes looked at him. “Did.. the demons..?” Her words were soft as she reached up and touched one of his scars. Her little fingers brushing over the slight difference in skin texture as she did. Kaiden watched Allison venture forward but he noticed that Grace stayed with him. He watched Ally with that same warm smile.​

Ezekiel nodded. Demons. That was what he had always called them and would likely call them for the rest of time even if he did know more now than he did before. He was not expecting her fingers to move to his cheeks. It was… unexpected. A little strange. He didn’t know what to do about it. “No,” he answered. It wasn’t quite rough but it wasn’t quite gentle. “People did that.” He weighed the words in his mind as he debated on the best way to continue. “People who were very afraid.” Grace watched, still unsure about him. Unsure about the scars. Unsure about her sister being so close. Hayden watched as well. He was as curious as the rest. He was not sure he could read Ezekiel. ​

Allison looked at him, her other hand coming up to his other cheek, fingers brushing that scar too. "People?" She asked, confusion in her voice. But.. people weren't monsters or demons. They were like them. Afraid? Allison pulled her hands away, dropping them to her sides for a moment. She was so fascinated by this man, and she had to think that whatever people did this, it must've hurt. So, she wrapped her arms around him in a hug. Hugs always made her feel better and maybe a hug would help. Kaiden listened, curiously. He could see that Ezekiel seemed unsure but he trusted his partner. And Ally seemed to like him, or at the least, wasn't afraid or unsure of him.​

“People who were… confused.” Ezekiel did not want to speak poorly of every Seraphite. There were plenty who did not murder. There were plenty who did not treat others unfairly, and even if they did, there were many who only did because that was the way of their people. He did not want to disparage those who did not deserve it. People like Alex. There were others there too. So many of them simply did not know any better. He was not sure how to explain this to a little girl, and he was not sure he needed to if this was just a moment in the passing of their lives. She was a girl who would eventually find a home somewhere. He thought perhaps he should say something else or stand up to end that part of the conversation, maybe join Josh to ask him what the plan was for these unfortunate children who lost their family, when arms wrapped around him. His eyes widened just a little as his body tensed. His arms froze where they were, and for several seconds, he was nothing more than a statue. Slowly, his arms relaxed, his hands finding her back. That was very sweet and possibly very astute.​

Confused people. That was strange to Allison, and she might understand later on, but it was strange and odd to her at the moment. She felt the body she hugged tense, but then, slowly she felt arms wrap around her. She hugged him tightly and that brought a tear to Kaiden's face. It was so sweet. And he loved seeing that. So much. Kai rubbed Grace's back as Allison eventually broke the hug, looking at Ezekiel and smiled. She looked back at her sister and held a hand out for her to come over. Kaiden needed to talk to Ezekiel and he looked at his dad, tipping his head to his partner then to the girls. Josh caught the hint and chuckled softly. "Why don't we fix the girls something to eat love." Josh said, knowing that they kept food here in their house for days when it was easier than making the trip to the cafeteria. And they kept food for the children that ended up here as well like these two.​
