Starbucks and Sarcasm

"No, you're not." She kept walking and the park came into view. She headed to the first empty bench she saw. "Look, this one's in the shade- no skin damage," she winked at him and went to sit.

Dylan sighed as he sat down, he popped a fruit in his mouth. "So, do we just seat here? Or is there another step to this experiment?"

"No, this is eat. Sit, eat, relax. " She licked some yogurt off her spoon and surveyed their surroundings. "It's fun. For me at least," she frowned a bit when she glanced at Dylan. He did not seem to be enjoying himself at all.

Dylan popped another fruit in his mouth, as he leaned back and watched their surrounding. He turned to Melanie, "What? I figure you would smile, when you enjoyed yourself?"

"I do, yes. I was just wondering about you," she said as she continued to eat her yogurt, making sure to scoop the fruit into each bite.

Dylan sighed, "Sorry. I guess I'm being a pessimist. Maybe we should talk, you know, get to know each other. It's usually an interesting experiment."

Dylan thought for a moment, his lips tightened as they swayed to the side. Then sighed, "How about something easy? What's your major?"

"Double major with Literature and Fine Arts...what about you? Something medical, I'd guess?" she asked.

Dylan grinned, "Well, yeah. I'm getting my BSN in nursing with a minor in foreign languages. In fact, that is what I was in a rush for, when we meet."

"Are you going to join the Peace Corps? Or Doctors Without Borders?" she asked. A nursing degree with a minor in foreign language was unique.

Dylan raised an eyebrow in confusion, "No. What makes you think that? I'm not a soldier and I need more flexibility then a doctor."

"No, the Peace Corps...like charity work all round the world? I just wondered because of your minor, that's all." she shrugged and turned back to her frozen yogurt.

Dylan smiled, "We get patients from various backgrounds, I think having someone that can speak to them in their own language, would help. Plus, we get patients that can't speak or understand English at all. It would save time for me to know it, then waiting for a translator."

Dylan thought for a moment, before he answered, "I've already completed Spanish, Latin, German and Chinese. This semester I have Arabic and Japanese."

Dylan looked at her confused, "What is?" He asked, unsure what was so interesting about the list of his studies.

"All those languages. I mean, I love English and all it's nuances, but six more languages...wow,"she said. "I never was very good with learning a second one."

Dylan smiled, "Their accelerated classes, so I don't have time to be in aww of how many languages I learn. I still have French, Italian, and Indian. It would take to long to take the classes I need to fluently understand them."

"Oh, okay..." she said. "Well, still. I think it's cool. What's your next question?" She finished her yogurt and tossed the cup in the nearby trash can.

Dylan thought for a moment, his lips tightened again as the swayed, "What do you like eating?"

"Hmmm...breakfast food!" she said brightly. "Also Italian and Mexican...but I really love breakfast food at all times of the day." She turned towards him, pulling her feet up onto the bench and wrapping her arms around her knees. "And you?"

Dylan looked at her, "Ground beef." He simple said, as if it explain everything. With a sigh, Dylan looking back at their surroundings. He wasn't sure, but the way she looked at him was harder to watch.

"Just ground beef? Not like...in anything? A burger? Taco? Hamburger Helper?" she said puzzled again. Dylan's practicality was so different than anything she's ever encountered.
