Starbucks and Sarcasm

As he left, she shut the door and slumped down against her wall, holding her head in her hands. "Oh, this is so not good..." she said aloud to herself. She spent the evening in her room, trying and failing to think of anything else beside Dylan. "What was I thinking? Why did I take him to the park...he didn't want to go, and I pushed him...and now I'm in a mess. Again." She berated herself, grateful she didn't have a roommate to hear her be crazy out loud. She glared at her microwave as her noodles cooked, waiting for the beep to signal her dinner was ready.

"Dylan." snapped Amanda for the third time, Dylan took a deep breath looking up at her.

"Yeah?" Dylan said, as he looked at her.

"What is wrong with you tonight. You've been grinning and like in your own world?"

"Oh, nothing. Trying to figure out my assignment."

"You girl wasn't much help, huh? I can help you."

"No. She was helpful. Maybe a little too helpful." he told himself. Shaking it off, "What did you need?"

"I was going to remind you about your reports. You usually start them by now, but you have been looking at that chart for half an hour."

"Right, sorry, I actually finished them early."

"Work, work, work. That's the Dylan I know."

Dylan gave her a half smile and handed her the file, "Can you check on this patient for me, later. I'm going to check on my patients again, before I get ready to go."

"Yeah. See ya." she said, but her voice trailed off, as Dylan walked away heading for the last patient's door in teh hall. Amanda watched him closely, something was up and she was not happy about it.

It was well past midnight when Melanie gave up and tried to sleep. She tossed and turned for a while before drifting off.

Suddenly she was in the park again, with Dylan. He was kissing her again, like before and she felt her hands move up, grasping at his shoulders. He stepped closer and she stepped back, finding herself trapped between him and a tree at her back. "Mels" he whispered against her neck and she pushed him away...

"You don't call me that," Melanie said, but suddenly Dylan had transformed into Cory... and his hold on her turned painful. "Cory stop!" she yelled, but he ignored her and just whispered again "Mels..."

Melanie woke up sweating, and sat straight up in bed, throwing her covers off. She groaned and rubbed at her temple, trying to forget the dream. She glanced at the clock; it read 5:48 am.

She sighed, knowing she wouldn't be able to go back to sleep. She decided to go for a run instead- she changed quickly and headed out the door into the cool, early morning.

Dylan sighed, he slept a few hours, but it was not enough. He hadn't thought so much about one thing, for so long. He sighed again, as he headed into campus, looking at his phone. He woke up an hour too soon, and couldn't get back to sleep. He went through his contacts, stopping at Melanie. She had to be asleep, so he shouldn't call her now, but he could text her. After a few moments of hesitation, Dylan decided he would text her:

So, what is your scheduled like today?

Melanie felt her phone vibrate against her leg as she jogged down the road. SHe paused, breathing a bit heavily and fished it out of her pocket. An unknown number flashed across the screen. Must be Dylan she thought. She opened the text and read his message. She hesitated a moment before responding. [Pretty open. Just morning classes, finished at 11. ] she sent back.

Dylan was surprised she responded, he thought she'd be asleep. As he walked into the Starbucks for some water, he texted her back:

I'm free too. Want to meet somewhere?

Dylan smiled, as he left teh Starbucks, why was he smiling, he thought, looking at her message, he texted back:

Noon, again?

[sure. Where?]

Her heart speed up involuntarily at the idea of seeing him again. She stopped to remind herself that he would never feel anything for her. Could never feel anything. She was just helping, for school- that's it.

Dylan grinned, as he walked, looking at her message, he tried to think of where to meet. He's first thought was the library, like they had before. But the thought was quickly shot down, in the back of his mind, all he could think of was he wanted to see her, alone. He thought for a moment, his lips tightened and swayed, before he can to a decision as he got near the medical lab, he texted back:

Meet me at the campus entrance, we can go to my place, since we were at yours yesterday.

She paused for only a moment before texting back [see you there.]

She smiled as she finished her run and headed to shower before her classes.

Dylan had never felt so anxious, by the definition, he was showing signs at ADHD. But he was just anxious, he understood that. By the time his last class was done, he was out the door in less time then he usually would be.

At 11:20, Dylan was waiting by the entrance, waiting for Melanie, he had calmed himself. Snapping himself back to his logical state was a challenge, but he managed. So, he calmly waited for her to get to the entrance, so he could take her to his place.

She forced herself to walk slowly, when she wanted to practically run to meet Dylan. Controlling herself, she strolled to the entrance, arriving at 11:28. She saw Dylan and walked over.

"I'm early for being early," she teased him, showing him the time on her phone.

Dylan smiled, "My class is close by, I can't help but be early." he stated, "Come on, I don't stay to far off." He said, leading the way off campus to his apartment.

Dylan opened the apartment door, "Technically it's a studio, my aunt designed for me." Dylan stated, as he moved aside to let her in. "I just didn't see a point in changing it, so it might not seem like my style." he joked.

"It's so nice," she said, looking around as she entered. "And like five times bigger than my dorm," she laughed.

Dylan smiled, "Well, you can seat down wherever you want and we can start going through some ideas, or something." Dylan said, tossing his bag beside the door. He walked over to his bed, lifting the sheet that hung over it and taking out the box. "I went through a few of these some more and picked out some that looked interesting."

Dylan sat beside her, closer then he intended, but he didn't really want to move. Placing the box on teh glass table, he took out a picture, "This one. It looked random, so I was curious."

"Oh that..." she looked at the picture of herself smiling sleepily, laying on a couch with messy hair splayed out around her. "I had fallen asleep on his couch, Cory's couch. He woke me up and said 'smile' and snapped that." She held the picture and frowned sadly at it.

Dylan watched her for a moment before snatching the picture away. "That's it for today." he stated. "We were just going over one picture at a time." Dylan tossed the picture in the box and went to put it back under his bed. "Did you want something to drink or something?" he asked, heading for the kitchen.

Melanie stared at him, surprised. "Just one?" she asked confused. But then he asked her about a drink so she let it go. "Uh, just water is fine."

Dylan took two bottled waters from the fridge and walked back to the couch, handing one to Melanie. "We agreed one." he smiled, "And I'm still questioning it you are still okay with it at all."

"Yeah, I'm fine." she said, though she wasn't sure if she was trying to convince Dylan or herself. She sipped from her water bottle, watching Dylan. "Well, what now?"
