Music of the Knight

"Yeah," Haruna mumbled. The guardians were there for protection detail, not to have fun themselves. Haruna felt a little sorry for Yuki, knowing that she wouldn't be able to dance. Yuki seemed like the person who enjoyed the events such as St. Xocolatl's Day and the dance. Haruna didn't feel the same way about such things, but then again, she didn't really have a special someone like Yuki did.

Yuki smiled as she listened to the other girls talk about St. Xocolatl's day and the gifts they were handing the Night Class. "Come on. We have to hurry before the Disciplinary Committee catches us." The apparent leader fished her gift from her bag and crept out the door. "Oh, no, ya don't!" Yuki stood up. "Come back here or you'll get it!" She tried, and failed, to sound threatening. Still, the girls moved on. Yuki huffed. "Hey!" She left Haruna alone with Yori and Zero. "Hey, I said come here." Zero muttered. "Can't a guy apologize?"

Haruna zoned out for the rest of class, either thinking about other things or not thinking at all. She heard Yuki yelling at some Day Class members and smiled slightly. Yuki was pretty funny, she had to admit. But at least one of the guardians took the job seriously. The Day Class students could sure be a handful. There would be plenty of time for gift-giving later at the designated time, so why did they feel the need to avoid the Disciplinary Committee now to do so? Haruna sighed as Yuki rushed off. Her face fell flat again as she heard Zero. "Yeah, I uh...I don't know if this is really the best time," she said to him, her eyes moving to glance at Yori.

"Fine." Zero whispered in her ear. "I won't say anything that could jeopardize this." He wanted to puke. He hated his current situation. "I want to apologize for hurting you." Zero managed to get close enough to Haruna, close enough, in fact, that their lips were centimeters apart. "I'm sorry." He whispered. "I needed my 'medicine' and Yuki had it. She wasn't around, so I took some from you." He tried his best to speak in code.

"This is ridiculous!" Yuki groaned as she chased them. "They're taking advantage of me not working today, but I have to if I want to see Kaname." She fished in her own pocket for a tiny gift for her idol. "He never said I couldn't go to the exchange." Yuki pointed out, following the girls.

Haruna stiffened. He was awfully close, wasn't he? She wasn't afraid he would hurt her this time, but she still felt uncomfortable. Haruna found she had trouble looking him in the eye for so long. She looked to the side nervously, aware of his encroachment on her personal space. She sighed slightly. "You could've just asked..." she heard herself whisper. Her eyes widened. Why did she just say that?

Aido grinned as he threw an arm around Akatsuki's shoulder. "Don't be so stiff, Akatsuki! The girls won't give you presents if you're rude to them." He grinned happily. Hanabusa never minded the festivities, unlike most of the other vampires. He loved the attention- it felt nice to be appreciated. "Aido." Hanabusa froze and turned to see Kaname descending the staircase. "Y-Yes, Dorm President Kuran?" he asked nervously. "Behave yourself," Kaname reminded the enthusiastic male. "Y-Yes, of course, Lord Kaname!"

Zero moved away. "I'm sorry. I thought you wouldn't agree to it, I was desperate, so I took the 'drugs'." He moved his eyes toward Yori, reminding Haruna that they weren't alone. To talk about what happened, they had to use code. "Next time I need it, I'll ask." He assured her with a thin smile. "The exchange, remember?" He took her hand and pulled her from the desk and toward the door.

Yuki made it to the exchange, just in time. "Now, everyone line up. I want to do this as orderly as pos-." She remembered that she wasn't a Guardian as of today. "Oh, whatever." She sat on the grass, away from the other Day Class members. "I'm sorry, Lord Kaname." She held her gift in her left hand.

Kaname followed behind the other Night Class students at the end, as usual. They were supposed to stand by their designated lines in order to receive gifts. Aido quickly hopped over to his line, which was the longest. The others trudged to their positions. Kaname noticed Yuki sitting over on the grass. What was she doing?

"Don't tell us what to do! Just 'cause you're the Headmaster's daughter... You just want to keep the Night Class all to yourself!" a girl accused Yuki. "Hey!" Haruna barked as she glared at the girl. "Lay off, will ya? Just go fawn over your pretty boys while you have the chance, hm?" Haruna glared as the girl rushed off angrily. Haruna sighed and extended her hand to Yuki. "What are you doing over here all by yourself?" she asked. "You can't stay here forever, you know, or he might leave before you get the chance to see him."

Takuma did the same, taking his gifts as kindly as possible, but he just wanted to get a look at Haruna. "Thank you." He smiled at one girl after another, still thinking of and picturing each girl as Haruna. "I appreciate it very much." He felt the weight in his arms get heavier and heavier.

Yuki smiled at Haruna, extending her own hand. "That's not true!" She scowled at the girl behind her back. "I got the job I have because I-I..." she could say nothing more. "Never mind how I got the job." She mumbled as she shot up. The only down side was that she dropped her gift in the grass at her feet.

Kaname noticed Haruna making Yuki stand and join the festivities. He smiled. Maybe now, she would see him. He sort of hoped she would wait until this was mostly over so he could actually speak with her a little before going to class. The way things were set up, the girls basically had to give the Night Class students their gifts and then leave without having much time to talk.

Haruna smiled at Yuki, hoping she could lift the other girl's spirits a little. "You might wanna wait till the line dies down, though." She glanced over at Kaname's line, which was quite long. "Well, I guess I have to go make sure everything stays calm. Don't stress about duty, just remember to give him your present," she said with a wink, not knowing that Yuki had dropped the small package.

Yuki didn't notice either, she was barely listening to Haruna. She (Haruna) and Zero could handle duty by themselves, but Yuki couldn't just stand by and wait. Nothing would ever get done between she and Kaname. Is he thinking about that kiss? Yuki noticed that Kaname changed his coat. The old one was probably on his floor or something. Kaname, please stay back until I can talk to you. She counted the girls in his line. Looks like nine more to go. Yuki couldn't stand the wait.

Zero watched the exchange. "Can't this stupid thing move any faster? I already hate having to go to that stupid dance, but this is just as much torture." He slapped his hand over the mark on his neck. "Yuki.." he saw her, but wouldn't move to bite her.

"K-Kaname...? I...I made this for you," a girl said timidly as she bowed to the handsome vampire. He smiled graciously at the girl and thanked her for the gift before she fled from embarrassment and the next girl took her place. Kaname's eyes glanced over the girl's head, counting how many were left before he could leave. True, he was grateful for gifts- it proved to him that they were doing something right if the humans treated them with such high regard. Yet in reality, he didn't feel much attachment to small favors from admirers much at all. He knew they would never be able to understand him.

Haruna crossed her arms as she stood by Aido's line. "Come on, keep it moving!" she instructed to the line of girls. "They have classes too, you know." Aido turned his head to look at her and smiled innocently. "Oh, come on, Haruna-chan. Lighten up!" Haruna just turned and walked away, moving down the line to check on everyone.

Yuki couldn't take much more of this. Kaname's girls were intentionally trying to make her angry, she thought. "Whatever." She forgot her gift in the grass and shook her head. "No, he doesn't want it and I can't just hand it over." Yuki tried to walk off, but, she was a Guardian, even if she didn't have duty right now. "Come on, girls, move it!" She didn't care that Kaname had forbid her from her duties. It wasn't his job to boss her around! All she could think of was getting these girls moving, but Zero was in pain, being around all these humans was surely killing him. "Zero." She stood on his other side. "Zero, just wait, please. Two minutes. If they aren't gone by then, we'll just go." She promised, but Zero sank to his knees, still holding his neck as he let out a groan.

Kaname sighed in relief as his line disappeared. It was a little too much, to be honest. Then there was the dance in a few days. At least most girls didn't have the nerve to ask Kaname to dance, and normally the male did the asking. There was only one person Kaname wanted to dance with... and she hadn't come to see him today. He was a little disappointed, to be honest. Perhaps she was angry with him about yesterday. Kaname turned to leave, but not before noticing a small package on the ground where he noticed Yuki had been sitting. Curiously, he went over and picked it up.

Haruna was grateful when the crowd died down and some of the less social vampires had already turned to leave for class. She saw Ruka brushing off a Day Class boy's attempt to give her something until Kaname passed by her, probably telling her it was improper to do so, since she accepted the gift afterwards. Haruna noticed that Aido and Takuma were still there, but hopefully Kaname would tell them to wrap things up and go to class.

"Oh, no!" Yuki whispered as Kaname picked up her tiny parcel. "Lord Kaname." She spoke in a normal tone. "Wait a minute." She didn't want to make him late, but she had to at least stop him before he walked off with her gift. Idiot! Idiot! Idiot! You're just like his fans! Yuki heard the little voice in her head and groaned. She couldn't just leave Zero there, alone and in pain. But, Haruna was there. Surely she could keep him under wraps for a short time that she was talking to the Pureblood. "Um, well, thanks for helping keep your class in order." She couldn't bring herself to ask for the gift back. "It's great to know that we've got this under control." She felt absolutely stupid. Takuma was with Kaname. "I'll just be a minute, Lord Kaname." Takuma assured him as Ichijo rushed Aido along. He was watching Haruna. "Thank you for all your hard work, Haruna." He called to her.

Kaname smiled as he heard Yuki. She seemed embarrassed- it was rather cute. "Is this yours, Yuki?" he asked. He already knew the answer but smiled at the female. "Thank you," he said genuinely. This was the only gift he cared about- Aido or any of the other vampires could have all the rest. "Indeed," he replied. "I will do whatever I can to help you." Kaname leaned down and whispered in her ear. "But promise me you'll save me a dance this weekend." Kaname then began to walk away, wearing a satisfied expression.

Haruna heard someone call out to her and turned around to see Takuma. She bowed respectfully, not thinking any other response was necessary. She was only doing her job, anyways. Haruna noticed Zero off to the side, clearly struggling. "They're gone," she told him. "Come on, let's go inside."

Yuki stiffened for the short amount of time that the Pureblood's breath touched her neck. Knowing what a Pureblood's bite did to humans from Headmaster Cross's stories, Yuki knew that this was a precarious position. "Kaname, I will do what I can to make this weekend better for you." She promised, backing up now. "I-I see you've changed your jackets." Stupid stupid stupid! "I guess you should go back to class then." Yuki was so embarrassed now more than ever. "I don't know if I'm even going to be able to dance. I have Guardian duties."

Zero followed the human inside, coughing and spitting up on his clothes already. "Damn." Being one of these beasts was making him sick already. "Are you sure you want this? Yuki will be here soon, Haruna." He held onto the door, coughing still. "Never mind! Come here!" He couldn't take much more.

Kaname chuckled as Yuki talked about trivial things such as his jacket. She was always so worried about the little things she did. But, he figured that was part of her charm. Yes, he did have to go to class, but was disappointed when she mentioned she might not be able to dance. "Well then, you'll have to visit me another time," he said, his strong yet pleasant voice floating over his shoulder as he cast one last glance back at the brunette. "Good night, Yuki. And be careful."

Haruna's eyes widened. He needed blood? Again? Haruna didn't know of many other solutions. "Um...can you take blood tablets?" she suggested. She felt a little sad to see Zero like this, and knowing that Yuki had been offering her own blood to him. Haruna had no idea how long it had been going on. Then Zero said he couldn't wait. She hadn't expected him to bite her again so soon, but at least she didn't feel so afraid now.

Every bone in Yuki's body was screaming for her to call him back and accept his offer to the dance. "Hang on, Zero needs me. I'll tell Kaname later. He won't be happy if he's late for class." She mumbled to herself. "I'll go, if he doesn't ask anyone else first. That would hurt." She admitted, throwing the door open and seeing Zero about to take Haruna's blood. "Zero, wait!" She pleaded as she unintentionally pushed her friend away. I wouldn't even have a dress if I accepted the invitation. Yuki told herself as she towered Zero. "I can't t-ake bl-blood tablets." Zero's eyes were red now. "Th-They don't w-work!"

"Zero needs me." The words felt like a stake in Kaname's chest. 'But I need you more,' he felt like saying. Maybe he was selfish. No, he knew he was. Zero was nothing, nothing put a pawn that didn't deserve someone like Yuki. Yet, he was the one allowed to be with her so freely. Kaname hated having to live with that. Sometimes he was tempted to just turn Yuki into a vampire so she would never leave his side, but then, that would be so cruel. He would never wish that upon her, not if she didn't want it. Their parents had tried to so hard to protect Yuki from the life of a vampire, and Kaname had always done the same.

Haruna was confused. He can't take them...? Then, she felt Yuki push her back. "Yuki...?" Haruna felt guilty, knowing that Yuki was going to take her place and give her blood to Zero. She knew she was just looking out for her, but still. Haruna didn't want to watch- it would feel too weird.

Yuki planned on letting Zero have her blood, just to save Haruna from another painful experience. "Zero, please." She watched as the premature Level E writhed in pain. "Come on, you can do it." She tried to encourage the man. "Haruna, if you don't want to watch, if you don't want see me have another little passing out episode, then you can leave." The dance was all she could think about right now. Kaname, I will dance with you if I live through this. She smiled as Zero's fangs bit into her bare flesh. Yuki groaned in pain. "Z-Zero..." she turned to Haruna. "Kaname asked me to the dance." She smiled. "But, I don't have anything to wear."

Haruna looked away as Zero bit into Yuki. Well...I might not so great at stuff like this, but I'll go with you if you want to find a dress," Haruna offered. When she was sure Zero wasn't going to just drain Yuki, she started to walk away. Was this what it meant to be a friend? Did friends let other friends fall in love with dangerous vampires? Were friends supposed to let other friends drink their blood? Haruna sighed. Why had everything in her life become so complicated?

Zero let go after two minutes of peace. His thirst was quenched, for now, as he wiped his face on the back of his sleeve and his eyes were that lavender color again. "Thank you, Yuki." He took off for his room, at peace once more.

Yuki watched Zero go as she slapped a hand over the wound. Kaname, forgive me. I'm sorry. She smiled at Haruna. "I'd like that a lot, but I'll wait a few hours before we go." She walked to the ladies' room to bandage herself. "K-Kaname, forgive me." She spoke aloud.

Kaname clutched Yuki's gift tightly in his hand as Seiren came to help him with the rest of the gifts. "Do whatever you like with them," he told her. "This is the only one I want." Kaname finally entered the classroom where the other vampires sat with their piles- some sifting through the gifts, and others ignoring them. Kaname sat in a row by himself so he enjoy the moment without interference. He smiled, staring down at the opened package. Just knowing that Yuki took the time to think of him warmed his distant and lonely heart.

Haruna laughed a little awkwardly. "Well yeah, I didn't mean we had to go right now..." she said before Yuki walked off. Haruna sighed as she walked back to her own dorm. She had a lot on her mind these days and wouldn't mind the chance to rest.

Yuki, even after she was bandaged, still couldn't keep her mind off of giving Kaname a direct answer. She had to say something before she went to bed. "I'll just take like ten minutes. They won't miss me." Yuki convinced herself that she would go to this dance with Kaname whether she was able to dance or not. Coming out of the restroom, she walked quickly and quietly to the front door. "Wait." She told herself. "I'm a Guardian. Why am I sneaking around?" She laughed at her own stupidity and left the building for the chilly night. "Okay, here I go." She could see the classroom in the distance. She had to be quick if she wanted Kaname alone. She walked on.

Aido gloated about all of the presents he received while Akatsuki did his best to ignore the enthusiastic male. He tuned out and noticed Kaname in the back of the room, holding something small. He seemed pleased, Akatsuki noticed. It was a little rare to see the pureblood so...well, happy. Kaname was indeed happy, and he couldn't deny it. Now if there was only some way to make Yuki dance with him. He decided that he shouldn't push her to do so if she didn't want to, though Kaname wasn't sure why Yuki would not want to as he remembered her kissing him. Though, maybe it would be a problem for her with the other Day Class students if she was seen with me, Kaname reasoned. The last thing he wanted was to cause trouble for the girl. She already had it hard enough as is- dealing with the students as a guardian and running on little sleep, plus being a regular student with studies. Then there was the part about Zero being a vampire and drinking her blood. Of course, Kaname had noticed. It bothered him, most definitely. Maybe even made him jealous. But Kaname knew he would never do such a thing- his bite would cause her to change. Her whole life would be altered, and Kaname wasn't ready for that. He didn't think Yuki was ready yet either.
