"You don't have to do this," Stuart implored as Adam began to pace, his gun in hand. "You really don't. I know it feels like you should, because you've followed his orders your whole life but this... this is different, Adam. You could step away, you could--"
"Shut up," Adam growled, lifting his hands to hold his head. "You just don't ever stop fucking talking, do you?"
"It's been said before." Stuart's voice held a tremor now that hadn't been there previously, and his eyes widened when Adam paused and pointed the gun in his direction. He noticed that his hand was shaking, and as their eyes met, Stuart shook his head.
"Please, don't do this."
"I have to," Adam whispered, "I... I'm sorry."
Stuart braced himself. He was so sure that this was the end but the shot never came and slowly, he opened one eye, and then the other.

Alannah knew that sending her in without him would be difficult for Cian, hell it was difficult for her to go in the damn building without him, but she knew this was the only way and both their expressions said as such as they came to stand in front of one another. Her bodyguard was taller than she was, and the politician had to tilt her head back slightly to regard him properly, but when she did so she recognised the same look of determination in his eyes, as was reflected in her own. They had to do this, they didn't have any other choice. But at least they could do it together.
She smiled against him when the first kiss came, the second still just as experimental, but the third... the third nearly had her melting on the spot. Alannah wasn't ever sure that she would get used to kissing Cian and even when they broke apart again, her eyes were shining with the triumph that they were here and they got to do this. No matter what happened, nobody could ever take that away from them. "Good luck," she breathed in return, mirroring his grin as her hand travelled down his arm to take his hand, giving his fingers a confident squeeze until he departed. Alannah watched him go, right up until she couldn't see him anymore, then she took in a breath and started towards the front of her building.
The stairs seemed to take forever but Alannah knew she couldn't risk the elevator, and when she finally reached her floor, she slowed, trying to regain her breath. She pushed open the double doors, crept past reception, the place eerily quiet. It was familiar yet it wasn't - there were papers strewn all over the floor, furniture turned over - either there had been a struggle or Adam was looking for something. Nevertheless, she continued forwards until her office came into view. The blinds were closed, she couldn't see inside, which was perhaps both a blessing and a curse. What it did allow Alannah to do was creep past and towards the fire escape, down the corridor until she reached the grey door with a push bar across it, one that she initiated as soon as she reached it. The door swung open to reveal Cian on the other side, and Alannah breathed a small sigh of relief before she ushered him in, her voice barely a whisper.
"The blinds are closed. I can't see inside." Then she looked back towards the office longingly, her mind scrambling to come up with some kind of plan. When she came up blank though, she decided that they had to do something, even if it wasn't planned. The thought of Stuart... It was enough to kickstart her legs back into action, and she remained low as she headed back to her own office, eventually coming to a stop with her back against the wall beside the door, ears straining to hear. She could have collapsed with joy when she heard Stuart's voice for the first time.
"Cold feet?"
